Bridge Education in Oxford

Oxford Bridge Club runs a comprehensive bridge education programme under the banner of Oxford Bridge School. Courses are available at all levels, from beginners to more experienced players. Further details are on their website.

Bulletins 2020-2023
The background

When the country went into lockdown on 23rd March 2020, face-to-face bridge came to an abrupt halt. The Summertown BC committee resolved to keep in touch with the membership via weekly bulletins. Initially committee members wrote them and many were very general, ie not bridge-related. Gradually other members agreed to write bulletins and, as we started online bridge sessions, the bulletins evolved into a review of that week’s hands.  The last bulletin, on 27th March 2023, was three years after the first.

Hi all. 

When I offered to write something for you all to enjoy, I had no idea that I would be following such talent. I’m debating whether or not to telephone Bridget and have my hair cut, having an artist's lesson from Diane or indeed a poetry lesson.  Maybe I have learnt something from the bridge hand that Steven put out.  I don’t really like talking about myself but during this lockdown things have turned out rather strangely. So I’m going to give you a little video (see below) of some of the animals on our small farm that I’ve been feeding recently. I did try to do a voice-over but the file was too large to send so I will give a brief description here of what you are about to see if you can download the video. The first picture is of our stag turkeys. Then you will recognise some chicken and then also some wild turkeys and a few geese.  Then we come to a beautiful rare breed of sheep called Cameroon. It was quite amusing about four weeks ago because Neil and I have been playing on Wednesdays with Steph and Steven and we are finding it very difficult to beat them although it has happened twice! On this particular Wednesday there was a bit of a commotion my end (nothing new) when the sheep decided to multiply. I rushed out with iPad in hand trying to play the hand, only to discover that there were two little baby lambs in the paddock next to our house.  Needless to say, Neil and I lost that hand but I thought we might call the lambs Steph and Steven!  That didn’t go down well!  The breed is a hair breed, meaning they have no wool but thick tight hair, with an extra undercoat during the winter months. This winter coat is shed automatically once spring arrives. They are best known for their unique brown colour with a black head belly and legs. Females do not have horns, while Rams have spiral horns with a thick main and throat rough.   Going back to the video, there are pictures of our stags and our red deer. The large herd are our yearlings which were born this time last year. We have one tame deer who was deserted by his mother and that is why you can get very close to him.  We bottle fed him for his first four months. The final picture is our latest calf that was born about two weeks ago and the picture shows it at two days old.  They are born with little white spots which last for about two months.

Many a happy hour has been spent playing bridge base online with Betty. We play with a group of about 20 from the Frilford Bridge club and this is efficiently run by Mike who organises the rota.
