The 2023 Diamond State Sectional Tournmanent

September 8-10, 2023 at the Bridge Studio in Wilmington.
Line up your partner(s) and save the dates!

This will be a cashless tournament.  You can register and pay for events online in advance through the ACBL tournament website (for help, click here), or pay by card at the door. Pre-registration is not required.

There will be no vaccination requirements and masks will not be required unless requested by opponents at your table.

The DSBA is excited to announce the opening (reopening?) of the Shuffles club in Ocean View, Delaware! The new club, Shuffles 2, will be owned and managed by Donna Heckscher.

A Grand Opening game will be held Thursday, July 13, 2023 starting at 12:30 at the Ocean View Presbyterian Church. Everyone is welcome to the new club, but please text, call or email to reserve a place for the inaugural game, Space is limited.

• Mentor/Mentee pairs will play on six consecutive Tuesdays at the Bridge Studio with a break midway through each session for mentees and mentors to review play. First planned day of play: May 9, starting at 6:30 PM.
• Mentees should have 0-99 masterpoints, $12 per session
• Mentors must be Life Masters, free play

Please join us as either mentee to learn from experienced players or as mentor to share your knowledge and love of the game. This was a very popular event when last run and we hope to make it an annual event to benefit our I/N (Intermediate/Novice) Players.

Grand Life Master Rick Rowland passed the 20,000-masterpoint mark earlier this year, gaining the last several hundred while playing online.

He is pictured here with his grandchildren, who we assume are kibitzing his online play, or perhaps helping with his duties as Vice President for the DSBA Board. 

Congratulations to Rick on his accomplishments in the bridge world and a huge THANKS! from DSBA for all the work he has done to promote and support bridge.

Results for the State Online Championship Tournament are in! The tournament was held on BBO on six consecutive Saturdays starting January 8, 2022.  The results of all six sessions were combined to designate state champions in each of three flights: 0-500, 500-1500 and 1500+ masterpoints.

The winning players in the three flights are:

Flight A: Soley Kristjansdottir

Flight B: Kim Holm

Flight C: Kristin Haroldsdottir

The final standings for players in each flight can be viewed here.  Trophies will be awarded to the winners at the Blue Hen Sectional Tournament February 10-20.

The Southern Delaware Regional Tournament will take place May 2-6, 2022 in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Line up your partner(s) and save the dates!  Pre-register early by email to sectional@unit190.org telling us in what sessions you plan to play and with which partners and teammates. We don't want to have to combine some flights if there are insufficient entries in a particular event.

We will comply with all applicable restrictions on indoor events.  All participants will be required to wear masks while in the Bridge Studio.

The 2021 Dave Treadwell Sectional Tournament will be held at the Bridge Studio of Delaware, 1403 Foulkstone Plaza, Suite 203, Wilmington, Delaware 19803 on December 10-12, 2021.

All players must show proof of a CDC-approved course of vaccination against COVID-19, with the required 14 days having passed after the last required dose.

Players will be required to wear a mask if anyone sitting at their table requests it.  It is recommended that players wear masks while away from their tables, milling around the room before or after the session, etc.

Preregistration is strongly encouraged: please email sectional@unit190.org. We will not turn away vaccinated players who have not preregistered if we have space to accommodate them.  However, preregistration makes our planning much easier, and makes it much easier for us to check your vaccination status when we are working off a list of players who say they are coming.

Due to Covid-19 precautions we do not expect to be able to serve lunch.

On July 22, Unit 190's own David Venetianer won the North American Online Bridge Championships (NAOBC) 0–5000 Knockout Teams event as part of team "Mr. 1700 and Friends".  In addition to David the team included Eric Gentleman (Captain), Richard Franklin (David's longtime friend and partner), Paul Holmes, AJ Stephani and Isaac Stephani.   This was a four-day knock-out event with a single match each day.  In a remarkable performance, the Mr. 1700 and Friends team never trailed in any quarter of any of their matches throughout the event. They defeated the defending champions in the final round.  Please join us in congratulating David on his victory!

Come join us for the 2021 Southern Delaware Sectional Tournament, to be held at the Epworth United Methodist Church  in beautiful Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Oct. 21-23!

It will be an opportunity to play “face-mask-to-face-mask” bridge and enjoy the game live again.

Proof of vaccination is required and masks are required full time except when taking a drink.

No food or drinks will be provided but you can bring your own drinks into the playing area. There will be plenty of break time for lunch at a local restaurant or you can bring your own and eat outside or in the church lobby.

Please join us and continue the process of bringing “live” bridge back! Make sure and bring your wheelbarrow to bring home the silver!

The Delaware State Bridge Association will hold its ANNUAL MEETING virtually on September 14, 2021 at 7:15 PM.

ACBL members in Unit 190 are asked to attend and vote their approval or disapproval of the following slate of candidates: Kim Holm, Sally Humphrey, Mark Nehra, Trina Williams, Rick Rowland and Richard Popper. If the slate is approved, then additional nomination(s) will be taken from the floor to elect one more Board member.

The following members are returning to the Board to complete their two-year term (2020-2022): Harold Jordan, Soley Kristjansdottir, Mark Henderson, Ala Hamilton-Day, William Herdle and Tom Tully. The Board appointed Rohan Mandayam to complete Debbie Schenkel’s two-year term, which will end in 2022.  Caroline Hughes, Eli Solomon, Brenda Vogel, Judy Cronin and Scott Freber will be retiring from the board at the end of their term. Sincere thanks go to these Board members for their dedication and service to the members of Unit 190.

The Diamond State Sectional Tournament will be held September 10-12, 2001 at the newly renovated and relocated Bridge Studio of Delaware, 1403 Foulk Rd., Wilmington.

Silver master points will be awarded.

Pre-Registration is required no less than 48 hours before each event.
To pre-register, email Caroline Hughes, including name, email and approximate ACBL masterpoints for you and your partner(s) and listing the events for which you wish to pre-register.

At this time we expect that all participants must show proof of vaccination and must wear masks.  Requirements may change to comply with government and ACBL guidelines.

Flighted Pairs Games Continue at the DSBA Virtual Club

Flighted pairs games will continue each Saturday morning 10:00 EDT on BBO.

As before, the Delaware State Bridge Association will award DOOR PRIZES and make a donation for each participant to the Food Bank of Delaware.

On BBO, look for "DSBA Flight A/B/C Pairs" under Virtual Clubs.  You can choose Flight C if you and your partner each have less than 500 MP, Flight B if you each have less than 1500 MP, or Flight A otherwise.

Bridge Summer Camp for Young Players 

The Delaware State Bridge Association is sponsoring a FREE Virtual Bridge Summer Camp for players ages 10-19.

The camp will run for two weeks, July 6-9 and 12-16 from 9-11 AM each day held virtually by computer.

The 2020 Diamond State Regional has been canceled.  Consistent with ongoing efforts by state and local officials to stem the spread of COVID-19, the Board of District 4 has canceled the event. 

We are encouraged by your enthusiastic response to the Diamond State Regional, and will be exploring opportunities to reschedule.

Thank you all for your participation in and contribution to the National Tournament in Philadelphia. Unit 190 Success stories are too numerous to list , but  they are lead by Richard Popper advancing to the third day of the Platinum Pairs, and Rick Roland winning an daylite Swiss Team Event.

And there were a lot of players from around the world honoring Dave by facing the card that represented the contract first, as they put down dummy.
