Chairman’s Christmas Message, 2022
Dear All,
We have now been able to enjoy a full year’s bridge without the threat of any lockdowns. It has been a real pleasure to continue to meet friends and experience the joys of face to face bridge. It has been reassuring that members have continued to support the club and ensure that we remain viable when other clubs have had to close due to lack of players. Our social events were able to go ahead and were very well attended and appreciated by everyone. This social interaction is so
very important after the trials and tribulations of the last three years.
Many thanks to the Club Secretary, Treasurer, Team Captain, Webmaster, Scorers, Committee Members and all those who have helped to ensure the smooth running of the club. We are so dependent on willing volunteers.
I wish all members and their families a very happy Christmas and a successful and healthy New Year. We’ll meet again on the 29 th December.

Leighton Buzzard Bridge Club
We are continuing to co-operate with MK, Cranfield and Regis clubs so that we can offer bridge on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings by sharing our resources and offering free access to each club's membership and guests. The essence of this is that the bridge will be friendly and inclusive of all levels of ability. An umbrella website has been developed - B O A (bridge online alliance) where all events can be seen but each club will retain it's own identity.
We have considered our options regarding a possible return to F2F bridge and given that our experiment with RealBridge has been very successful, have concluded that we will stay online on Monday evenings. We may explore the possibility of playing bridge F2F during daytime on another day.
East Cleveland Bridge Club
WINDING DOWN OF EAST CLEVELAND BRIDGE CLUB |
PROPOSAL FOR AMENDING EAST CLEVELAND BRIDGE CLUB
Further to surveys carried out to determine the level of support for 'real' bridge on Thursday evenings it has become clear that it is no longer viable. There are many reasons for this including advancing age, deteriorating health, moving out of the area and also a preference by some players for online bridge. There is also a view that bridge in the area is too fragmented with the resulting competition for players affecting the viability of the clubs. In this latter regard many have long felt that there is no justification for two separate clubs (Redcar and ECB) both operating from the same premises.
The Thursday night online bridge has sufficient players to continue, especially since our Blackburn guests are keen to carry on. It is therefore proposed that East Cleveland Bridge Club should continue to operate solely as an online club to meet the needs of those wishing to play online and further that organisation of 'real' bridge be left in the capable hands of Redcar Bridge Club.
This proposal effectively means the winding down of the original East Cleveland Bridge and the creation of a new online bridge club. To this end it is further proposed that:-
1. All ECB financial assets existing prior to closure due to the Covid pandemic should be distributed to the paid up members at the time and in accordance with each members wishes. Members will receive a full financial statement and may choose to:
1.
* Receive a cash pay-out (£13).
* Choose to donate their share to either Marske Hall or Air Ambulance.
2. All financial activity since the Covid pandemic has related entirely to the online bridge activities and any assets remaining would be retained by the online bridge club.
3. ECB online will be run informally by Geoff Taylor and Brian Williams who will operate a joint personal bank account. (Please notethat HSBC are now charging =£5/month for community accounts as well as charges for paying money in etc. Our HSBC account is therefore being closed.)
4. Bridge equipment is shared between 3 clubs. East Cleveland Bridge Club will retain their interest in the equipment but let it remain on semi-permanent loan to the other two bridge clubs.
5. ECB does not rule out 'real' bridge in the future and may therefore seek to recover its interests in the equipment.
Lesley Smith
There has been a unanimous response in favour of the proposals and no calls for further discussion or amendments. The proposals will therefore be carried out as now agreed.
The accounts details at the end of 'real' bridge period are presented on the Financial Details page.
In summary there is £462.84 to be distributed ampngst 34 members which works out at £13.61 each. In accordance with members wishes:
21 donations to the air ambulance = £285.87
11 donations to Marske Hall = £149.74
2 members asked for cash pay out = £27.23
Payments will be made once the bank account is closed.

This is to let you know that a committee meeting was held on 25th May 2022 to discuss the Club’s finances and Membership numbers.
At the moment, although the Club is up and running, the session usually consists of 7 or fewer tables. This means that the Club is paying for the weekly shortfall and whilst funds are still relatively healthy, this cannot be sustained indefinitely.
Therefore, it was decided at the meeting that the Club, regretfully, will have to raise the table money to £3 per session starting on 6th July 2022.
Thank you for your understanding.

We remain a small informal club and always welcome newplayers. Also visitors are very welcome to come along for a session of bridge for a modest table fee.

Liverpool Bridge Club
Message from the Chairman
Update on the sessions at the Club
There has been some interest from Members to start the Monday Evening sessions again. Therefore, commencing on the first Monday in September – 5th September – there will be duplicate sessions starting at 7-30 pm at the club. This will be for a trial period.
Also, starting on the same Monday, 5th September, the number of boards played in the afternoon sessions will be reduced down to 12 or 15 boards to take pressure off the players coming through from the classes and give them more time, help and encouragement. It is envisaged that this will only last a few weeks until they can speed up. Therefore, there will be no Monday Afternoon Cup in September.
Table Money
After much discussion the committee have decided to raise table money to £4 for members (and £5 to non-members). This will commence on 1st October 2022. This charge has not changed for over 10 years, but we now feel that this increase is required to keep the club solvent in the face of spiralling heating and other costs at the club.

1. Stratification
Members will be aware that, in recent weeks, results have been presented on two bases:
- as per normal (and duly reflected on our website and filed with the EBU) and
- on a stratified basis (for internal consumption within SHBC).
The objective was to demonstrate the differences between the two systems, specifically in the allocation of master points. Pending the resolution of scoring issues with the EBU and other inconsistencies, the committee has decided to suspend the trial scheme approved by the members in this respect at the AGM in June 2022. The committee will meet again on 4 October, but it is unlikely that the issues will be resolved by then. Thank you for your understanding.

SmartBridge Trial |
You should have all received a personal email this week from Norman Inniss, the Chairman of the Kent Contract Bridge Association (KCBA) regarding the future of Bridge.
KCBA have agreed to take part in a trial of SmartBridge for 12 weeks starting in mid September 2022.
SmartBridge is a fast track learning experience for Beginners to Bridge which is designed to get people playing in Clubs more quickly than the current Bridge for All syllabus (EBU Red Book).
KCBA needed four Clubs to take part in this trial and your Committee have agreed that our Club will be happy to assist.
Details
The SmartBridge Trial will be held over 12 weeks starting in mid September 2022. This will provide a brand new Beginners Bridge online course run by EBED in conjunction with four Clubs in Kent which will teach up to 15 participants to play bridge delivering a weekly lesson and then, later in the same week, the students will attend a Supervised Play session at Downs Sailing Club where they will play 8 practice boards to consolidate their learning in the lesson.

News from your committee |
Just a brief update to let you know that:
1. membership of SHBC has reached 83 with 10 new members in recent weeks 2. table numbers have been very good in the three months through 30 June with 7.7 tables per session (and 8.8 in June itself) and 3. congratulations are due to 5 members with EBU Masterpoint Promotions in May, including Kathleen Gaylor (now 11 Star Regional Master)- details on website.
Your new committee members are settling in to their respective roles and met last week when it was agreed that:
1. following a recommendation at last month’s AGM, it was decided to consult members as to their views on stratification (which is a way to spread Master Point awards so that players of all ranks have a greater opportunity to earn points on the basis of their rank in the NGS system); over the next few weeks, results will be filed as usual with the EBU, but internally we will publish a parallel run of stratification-based results in demonstration of the differences between the two systems; then, the committee will consult members as to the pros and cons of the two systems and proceed accordingly i.e. either to maintain the status quo or to adopt stratification.

Friday Social Bridge Evening
Thank you to everyone who attended the club on Friday 15th July for a sociable evening of bridge. The event started with a drink in the bar for those who wanted to ensure they were following all the advice to drink plenty of fluids in this current heat wave before we settled down to a game of bridge. We had 10.5 tables and stopped for a cake break after 6 rounds. The cake proved to be extremely popular and those who hesitated going downstairs missed out i.e. myself and David. Also thank you to Sue Measures who put all her years and years (and years) of experience in pubs to good use, in pouring perfect pints and glasses of wine, Katie for floating about putting kettles, water heater and the dishwasher on and generally tidying up and David for scoring though he seems to have got ours very wrong.
The best North South partnership were Sue Measures and Carrie Babington with the top East West partnership on the night being Diane Gatehouse and Christine Bennett.
All four ladies staggered off into the night with a bottle of wine each for the endeavours.
With lots of people enjoying the evening, we will run another one in the autumn.

CLUB PREMISES REVAMP |
The Maidstone Civil Service Club has seen some extensive works undertaken over the last few months. In addition to a complete refurbishment of the toilet facilities (Ladies Please Note!), including a new Disabled Toilet, decorations and lighting have been improved. The most obvious visible change is to the rear of the building where a new patio has been built with a new access ramp and a sheltered area over the rear entrance.
The general bridge playing conditions are now first class so why not come back and try Face To Face again on Wednesday nights. We start at 7pm and finish at 10pm. Coffee, Tea and biscuits and water are provided and alcoholic drinks can be purchased at the Bar. All are welcome. Please remember we now collect monies with contactless payments, not cash.

Apple Bridge Club
This is to let you know that a committee meeting was held on 25th May 2022 to discuss the Club’s finances and Membership numbers.
At the moment, although the Club is up and running, the session usually consists of 7 or fewer tables. This means that the Club is paying for the weekly shortfall and whilst funds are still relatively healthy, this cannot be sustained indefinitely.
Therefore, it was decided at the meeting that the Club, regretfully, will have to raise the table money to £3 per session starting on 6th July 2022.
Thank you for your understanding.

Thirdly, we have taken advantage of the offer by the EBU to affiliate for free on a trial basis from now until September 2022. We will review this decision at the AGM of the Club which will take place on 19th April 2022. Depending on the views expressed at that meeting, we reserve the right to call an extraordinary members meeting at the end of July 2022 at which time we will either vote to fully affiliate to the EBU or disaffilliate if that is the wish of the membership. We already have around half of our Club who are members of the EBU by virtue of attending other Clubs or directly affiliating as personal members, but this decision means that a number of members will receive a welcome pack from the EBU explaining the benefits that accrue to members. I will be passing appropriate contact details to the EBU as part of the trial.

CHICAGO SESSIONS MONDAY MORNINGS |
Due to the increase in numbers, it is now necessary for players to book to avoid disappointment and this can be either by e mail or telephone to Sue Clark 01892 667386, sueclark16@btinternet.com. Bridge players at all levels are enjoying these friendly sessions where there is no necessity to have a partner as scoring is on an individual basis. The emphasis is on playing the game whilst learning from others without pressure. Supported by Crowborough Bridge Club, this initiative is to not only benefit those wishing to practice and improve their game but also meet club members.

Yesterday was another enjoyable evening of face-to-face bridge. The only negative was that table numbers were the lowest since we restarted (three and a half tables). Apparently holidays in France, Spain and Switzerland are more attractive than an evening in Taverham!

We can take card payments again ! |
The company that provides the card payment readers had said that playing a card game was a form of "gambling", and they would not allow us to use their system to collect payments. They have now reversed that decision. Payments can now be made by card, preferably contactless, but a PIN can be entered if you prefer. It is so much easier to take card payments rather than collect and bank cash.
Thank you Neil for your perseverance in explaining our activities to the company.

Lutterworth Bridge Club
Dear Member we, the Committee, are very sorry to announce the permanent closure of Lutterworth Bridge Club with immediate effect. Covid has seen our membership drop by approximately 50% and since our reopening in March 2022, although initially the interest was encouraging, attendance gradually fell away and we have been struggling to get more than 3 tables per session, which means the club has been running at a loss. Nobody wanted this outcome but unfortunately it was inevitable.
When all outstanding bills have been settled and the equipment sold we will notify everyone of the remaining funds which will either be distributed between the membership or donated to charity, whichever the membership decides. We are really sorry that it has come to this.
Regards the LBC Committee
Huddersfield Bridge Club
The Platinum Jubilee Party on Monday June 6th was extremely well attended with 52 people progressing from mushy peas to some mushy card playing, especially those who had a large glass of wine.
Since then, there has been a few comments about how the committee could put on such an event for only £5 a head.
The answer to that question is quite simple…… we couldn’t and didn’t!The event was subsidised with the costs per head being more than half again on top of the price of the ticket.
We are happy to do this, to encourage members to attend the club and indeed numbers this week are up on average for this year, so it sounds like a “win-win” to me!
However, while we did not make any money on this event we will continue to put on other events and are willing to listen to suggestion from members and if you can suggest an event that makes money we will definitely listen.
Our next event is going to be slightly less ambitious, as we are inviting other local clubs to join us for a chat, a beverage and a game of bridge on Friday July 15th.
Poster and sign-up sheet for this evening will appear very shortly.

Future events |
The club committee met earlier this week (Monday May 9) and decided to suspend face-to-face sessions immediately. Following requests from several members, we will be starting online sessions using RealBridge in three weeks time.
After an encouraging re-entry to face to face at the Comrades Club in late March, numbers dwindled to a faithful disappointed few, and the committee has decided to suspend Thursday evening sessions until we start on Realbridge at the end of the month. Maybe members still feel threatened by Covid. Maybe home comforts during the pandemic have created inertia about going out. The price of fuel certainly doesn’t help.
In 2022, Realbridge has been gaining traction as allegations about BBO cheats spread. The time has come for WBC to switch to the nation’s favourite system: you’ll see your friends on screen and chat between boards.
For this to be successful, your club is asking for your support. Please sign up for the inaugural session on Thursday, May 26th. It starts at 7pm, but players need to register by 6.50.
On July 7th, WBC will host the first of its Realbridge teams competitions. Subsequently, these will take place on the first Thursday of each month. The teams system works very smoothly: it has been thoroughly tested by our players in the Wessex League matches during the 2021-2 winter campaign.

Our numbers have been extremely low since we returned after the lockdown. Unless we can get our numbers back to their former level it is possible we will have to close the club.
We are asking all our members to spread the word about our friendly club and encourage new and former members to return on a Thursday morning.
When we resume on Thursday 9th June, the table money will be increased to £4 to include refreshments. We hope that this may encourage numbers to increase
Please spread the word!!

Future Bridge Survey |
The survey is now closed. I received 90 entries plus a few duplicates. The numbers voting for each of the alternatives is given in front of the questions below. The totals do not add up to 90 because various people either gave no answer to the question or answered something completely different. The only clear conclusion is that members do not want us to become an on-line only club. The future of the club in the light of the survey will be discussed at the up-coming AGM.
Question 1. Assuming covid restrictions and worries are over would you prefer to play
30 a) on-line?
31 b) face-to-face?
28 c) either?
Question 2. Should we cater for both on-line and face-to-face sessions?
22 a) No, just face-to-face
2 b) No, just on-line
27 c) Yes, with hybrid sessions playing both on-line and face-to-face at the same time with the same boards
32 d) Yes with separate sessions for face-to-face and on-line
3 voted c) or d)
Question 3. If we were to run an extra session would you play in a revived Wednesday morning session?
21 a) Yes
49 b) No
17 c) No but maybe at some other time
Question 4. If we were to run a Tuesday evening and a Wednesday morning session would you prefer
17 a) Tuesday face-to-face and Wednesday on-line?
27 b) Tuesday on-line and Wednesday face-to-face?
26 c) Both face-to-face?
13 d) Both on-line?
Question 5. If you are playing on-line do you prefer to play on
34 a) Real Bridge?
20 b) BBO?
20 c) either?
13 d) I dont play on-line

Whitley Bay & Tynemouth
The Tuesday morning online session has dropped to consistently less than 3 tables and is not expected to increase. This is not enough for a meaningful duplicate competition, therefore Tuesday morning online will be discontinued. There will be no online bridge on/from Tuesday 24th May.

Table Money is Now Cash Only |
Sadly, our duplicate sessions have been deemed to be "Gambling" and in breach of our Contactless Payment Providers Terms and Conditions.
The EBU are aware of other Bridge Clubs this has been applied to and, despite the best efforts of Gordon Rainsford, the Compliance Team decision has not been changed.
Can you now please bring cash with you for Table Money. Payment may also be made using online banking.
We will continue to fight this decision and will also be looking at alternative providers.

Regis Bridge Club
Your committee met last week to review our current situation and how we should proceed for the coming months and came to some firm decisions about our direction of travel. There are a number of aspects upon which decisions have been made and this article will cover them all:
Firstly, we have now returned to face to face sessions at the Cricket Club over the last 11 weeks. Whilst we have so far only met our "break even" attendances sporadically, we are close enough to that point to continue to offer the opportunity for members to meet face to face. Therefore, until further notice, we intend to continue to meet on Tuesday evenings as we did pre-pandemic. We hope to see more of you joining us in the future.
Secondly, the Monday morning online relaxed sessions will also continue as before. Those members still understandably reluctant to venture back in person will maintain the opportunity to socialise online with other members. Additionally, a number of members have taken advantage of the opportunity to play online with our fellow BOA members at Leighton Buzzard amd Milton Keynes on a Monday and Wednesday evening and they will continue to be made welcome by both clubs.
Fourthly, one of the strengths of our Club has been our social aspects such as celebrating Xmas and our annual dinner. At this time, we are seeing a percentage of our membership face to face. As I write this, 42 members have returned on at least one occasion in the last 11 weeks so we have no plans to go overboard with those celebrations. However, if numbers continue to climb, we reserve the right to review the situation. We will have a Xmas celebration on 21st December but scaled back from previous years.
Finally, I can confirm we intend to hold our annual Regis in Bournemouth event starting Friday April 29th 2022 finishing Monday 2nd May 2022. Because prices for accommodation have changed, we will be asking for a supplement from those members who have already paid to attend the postponed 2020 event and who chose for us to hold their monies. We will be writing to them in due course nearer to the time.

Westcotes Bridge Club
Update on the Situation of Westcotes Bridge Club as at 8th May 2022 |
Although this website has not previously been updated to show this information, duplicate bridge in our Monday evening slot at St Oswald has been available for the last few months, and continues for the time being. These sessions are currently run by Steve Wright for Bradgate Bridge Club and are known as Bradgate and Friends. This is an arrangement with the County Bridge Club to provide combined sessions in circumstances when attendances at all clubs has been significantly reduced due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. In particular, these sessions are aimed at members of Bradgate, Westcotes and County bridge clubs, but are open to everyone. The arrangement was convenient for Bradgate while their usual venue was being refurbished and while Westcotes could not envisage sufficient attendance of our members to hold our own duplicate sessions in the usual (pre pandemic) way.
We are grateful to Bradgate (especially Steve Wright) and County for setting up this facility and making it available to Westcotes members.
However, we need to see MORE Westcotes members playing in these sessions as a prelude to Westcotes taking Monday evenings back and running as we did before the pandemic started. Bradgate are now expecting to return to their usual venue from 30th May onwards, and we are not yet seeing sufficient members attending to make up a viable session of just our own members. So, more of us need to start playing in the last few weeks of Bradgate and Friends, but it will need a significant come back if we are to have sufficient Westcotes members to make up a viable movement from 30th May onwards.
In this situation, the County club has agreed to temporarily run the Monday evening duplicates as County and Friends for a month after Bradgate leave us. The idea is to give us (Westcotes) time to build up our attendance, hopefully, to a level at which we can support a viable session on our own. This will take a considerable effort and goodwill from our members to get things going normally again.
So, how does the future look for Westcotes? At the moment we simply don't know; it requires enough members to want to come and play.
Hence, although it must be stressed that we need to see more members playing before then, there will be an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of Westcotes Bridge Club on Monday 6th June at 6pm at St Oswald. This will be, of course, open only to Westcotes members, and is nothing to do with Bradgate or County bridge clubs, except to say that County would very much like us to restart as an independent club. There will be a combined session of County and Friends at 7pm on that date, but please don't wait until then; please attend as soon as and as frequently as you can, or there is an obvious danger that we won't be able to restart.

Lytham Online Bridge Sessions on BBO
With immediate effect our online Tuesday evening sessions are coming to an end. These sessions have been running since July 2020 on the initiative of our late club secretary Jeremy Stanforth. During the lockdown periods these have proved a great success, enabling our club players to participate in a "Lytham Bridge" club event.
However, with the return of regular club sessions and other online bridge events being available, it seems that the demand for such a session is not as great as it once was. For that reason the session is discontinued. We thank all of our members who took part and made it into the success that it was.

Buckingham Bridge Club - Return to Face-to-Face |
The threat posed by Covid-19 has reduced significantly and we hope that the threat will further subside as summer approaches. We believe that it is sufficiently safe to play bridge face-to-face but we do still need to exercise some caution. Currently the symptons appear to be less severe but the infection rate remains high. We are continually monitoring the situation and if we should ever need to revert to playing online we will advise you on this website.

ABC Anders
♥ Dear ABC Players ♦ ♣
It is with a heavy heart I have decided to not re-open the club again.
It was lovely meeting everyone who came in the autumn and I'm very grateful to all of you.
Unfortunately the interest in face-to-face bridge is still quite low at most of the clubs. Susan, who was running the supervised session, and I have spent a lot of time discussing the various options, but we feel it's too much of a risk for us to carry on as it is.
It's very emotional writing this message, but somehow I get comfort in thinking of how successful my beloved Anders was in running his club. We are very proud of him.

Afternoon Bridge Club
Are we nearly there yet? |
Every parent's unfavourite question from little voices on the back car seats now keeps cropping up in bridge clubs, schools, homes, hospitals and workplaces. Is Covid finally on the way out? Are we nearly there yet?
ABC Chairman Sarah Chamberlin said: “It’s such a joy to see people and catch up. I really hope that clubs like ours will take off again in 2022, especially as we play in the afternoons.”
With most restrictions now lifted – whether or not you agree with the timing - we thought it right to update you on what's happening at ABC and how the past nearly two years have affected the club.
Well, we are still here playing online via RealBridge on a Wednesday afternoon and Face-to-Face at the Costessey Centre on Thursday afternoons. Wednesday numbers are reasonable – averaging over nine tables during January. Face-to-Face is more disappointing and so far we are not covering costs, which is not a situation which can continue indefinitely.
The Stafford Hall is huge and airy and an ideal location for returning as safely as possible to Face-to-Face bridge. We play with windows open. Why not give it a try and see how you feel about it? Omicron appears to be peaking and we are optimistic that, week on week, more of us will feel confident enough to meet again.
Also most of us have taken to playing RealBridge during Covid and we have every intention of continuing to play online on Wednesday afternoons. The great advantage is that people can join us from anywhere in the country – or indeed the world. We can now claim to be ABC International with members in Sri Lanka and those who join us from their holiday homes in Portugal, France and the Canary Islands!
People have been playing and joining from Yorkshire, Kent, Essex, Warwickshire and Peterborough. Not only that, much-loved club members who have moved away like Paul and Sue Hutchings are able to join us regularly from Sussex.

Avonside Bridge Club
CLUB NOTICES |
The Committee held a meeting last Tuesday morning (February 22nd) and the current exceptional circumstances led them to making some important decisions. (1) Having tried to get Tuesday sessions off the ground twice without success, the Committee cannot see this changing at any point in the foreseeable future. So Avonside has now becomea once-a-week Club, playing only on Friday afternoons.

Regis Bridge Club
Chippenham Bridge Club
To update you on Chippenham Bridge Club activity; today, [February] 14th , is the last time we will be using hybrid.
With a growing number of members ready to return to F2F bridge, the current Monday online tournament, which has run in parallel with a F2F tournament in hybrid mode, is being moved to Tuesday evenings, leaving Mondays as a F2F only day. We will now run four separate tournaments: F2F on Mondays, RealBridge on Wednesdays and BBO on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Manchester Bridge Club
Tournament Director's Course |
We are setting up a Tournament Directors course to take place probably on the weekend of 26th and 27th March. The course will last will enable participants to direct our club duplicates and by attending one further day on an EBU assessment course also direct County events. We really need to make sure we have sufficient members who are properly trained to run our face to face duplicates. We already have 5 members who want to go on the course but if any-one else is interested please email Paul Murray asap (paul.murraysafc@gmail.com.) The Club will pay for the cost of the course.

COVID UPDATE FEB 2022 - PLEASE READ ♠ ♥ ♦ ♣
As from Weds 23rd February all Wednesday and Thursday sessions will move back to F2F at the clubhouse. All other sessions will continue to be online for the moment.
Please read the appropriate requirements for playing F2F (shown on the Home Page) and ensure that you register your intention to attend any F2F session by completing the online form attached to the appropriate calendar entry.
Garden Room Bridge Club
Continuation of Online Bridge |
To: All Garden Room Bridge Club Members and Players
Based on feedback obtained from members, the uncertainty over Covid 19, and other clubs experience in attempting to return to F2F bridge, it is clear that people are erring on the side of caution and not returning in sufficient numbers to make it viable.
With winter upon us, online Bridge is still the preferred option, and so we are continuing with our weekly online tournament on BBO each Friday at 2pm.
We will continue to review the situation based on how it is working out for other clubs and the latest information concerning the Corona virus.

TD's and Scorers Wanted |
As we move into F2F it is becoming obvious that we need more help than ever to run our club. There is a shortage of TDs, and we will soon be arranging an external course for any members who wish to become one.
We also have a great need for scorers to manage the computer system during a session. The necessary training will be done in the club and will only take an hour or so, after which you would be paired with an experienced TD/scorer to hone your skills. For either or both of these much-needed positions please contact in the first instance any trustee.

Face to Face Update |
Tuesday afternoon has been running for some months now and has become a well-attended session attracting several new members. Parking is not the problem that it once was as a lot of office workers seem to be working from home. This session has always tried to offer assistance to newcomers to bridge and welcomes visitors. Wednesday evening has been running for three weeks now and whilst those that have attended have thoroughly enjoyed playing and meeting friends it has not been too well attended. This session is run along the lines of Tuesday afternoon starting at 7:15pm, ending before 10pm. As with Tuesday afternoon a minimal amount of assistance can be offered to those new to F2F and it is hoped that it will develop into a pleasant, sociable session of bridge. All F2F sessions observe the current covid restrictions and there is a plentiful supply of masks, sprays etc although at the moment the use of masks is an individual option. Both these sessions are hosted by the director, run with a fairly light touch and so far have been very pleasant! Do come along, you will always have a partner!

COVID. EBU UPDATE |
The EBU have issued guidance to all clubs that all players need to wear facemasks when playing Face-to-Face.
Therefore, at BBC we will be following that policy from Tuesday until we get new information.
If everyone is double vaccinated and where possible has had the booster this will help to reduce the risk and keep everyone safe.

South Croydon Bridge Club
I agree with your hypothesis that things have marked improved over the last two weeks. Though the improvement is certainly not complete, or at least I hope it still has a way to go. I have been asking for prebooking so that I could cancel the session should it fall below two tables. I am now only requiring it for three of the four sessions.
We
- do not require face masks, though one or two do (but are not concerned if others at the table don’t)
- keep sufficient windows open, no purifiers or monitors
- bidding boxes have never moved though one or two decided to very early on
- double jabbed, this was last reviewed when some of our members were not eligible for a booster
- table money is being invoiced monthly, this started because we were on RealBridge; but went without a hitch and members found it easy so we have just continued. I have just about got the database working correctly now. There are a few who need a nudge but I haven’t resorted to requiring regular delinquents to pay in advance.
Now we just need to do 2.5 years recruiting in one hit! Whilst we have had the usual attrition, the numbers coming it have not kept up. I am considering some crash courses at weekends.
Wirral Duplicate Bridge Club
🤧 Please Note: Any viral, cough or cold symptoms/or you are on treatment for a respiratory infection either prescribed, or over the counter preparations, you should not attend out of consideration for the other players
NEW - Please take a Rapid Lateral Flow Test prior to attending all bridge sessions however wearing Facemasks is still optional when playing bridge. This change starts immediately and covers both Wednesday and Saturday sessions.
Loughton Bridge Club
Covid risk assessment - Please read before returning to the club |
The purpose of this risk assessment is to ensure that the Club:
-takes account of Government guidelines;
- takes account of Grange Farm Centre’s requirements and any appropriate EBU advice;
-cannot be seen as negligent, should anything go wrong, as far as its insurers or any other parties are concerned;
-does its best to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its players (members or guests) and that they are aware of what is expected of them.
Overall expectations
We are a long-established Club and know most of our members very well. Experience is that they are mature and responsible. Against that background we are confident that we can expect and trust players to comply with guidelines and requirements. That said:
- we will expect anyone who has Covid 19, displays signs of Covid 19 or has been in contact with Covid 19 not to attend the Club and to stay away for an appropriate period;
- we will expect anyone attending the Club to have been doubly vaccinated, unless medically exempt. Otherwise they should contact a committee member to explain. Such cases will be considered on their merits but playing at the Club would only be permitted in exceptional circumstances;
-we will ask for proof of vaccination on or before the first visit.
- we will expect anyone attending the Club to use the sanitiser provided by the Centre. Additionally, we will provide sanitiser on each table for the use of players;
-we encourage players to carry out a lateral flow test on the day of attendance at the club;
- Club Officers (and players too) will look out for any non-compliance, problems, etc, and raise them as appropriate;
- all members will be made aware of requirements and of this risk assessment. Potential visitors can find them on the Club website and can be told the situation if they enquire by some other route.
Entering, leaving, and moving around within Grange Farm Centre
The Centre encourages the wearing of masks and social distancing. The use of the NHS QR code to “check in” is also encouraged (failing that a register of details will be kept). We will comply with these requirements by:
- expecting players to wear masks/face coverings when arriving and leaving. Also by keeping apart during such times;
- limiting the number of tables to 10 so that we maintain some distance between tables while each round is played;
-masks will not be required once members have entered the bridge room, though players may wear masks if they wish.
Chairs, tables, other equipment, etc
The Centre ask that chairs, tables and other equipment are wiped down before and after use. The Centre will provide wipes. We will comply with these requirements by:
- wiping down chairs and tables at the start of a session. The first person to sit at a table to please wipe it down and each member to wipe down their own chair.
- ensuring each player has their own personal bidding box which they bring with them to play and take them home with them. If possible boxes should be marked with the owners name and only be touched by the owner;
-Some spare boxes will be kept at the Centre for visitors or in case anyone forgets to bring their own. These can be wiped when needed;
- using boards and cards that have not been played for some days so that, effectively, they have been quarantined;
- wiping electronic scoring equipment (laptop, scoring units, etc) prior to the start of the session. Each scoring unit will only be touched be one person wherever possible;
-This equipment will be collected up by one person and sanitized before being used again.
Catering (tea, coffee, biscuits, etc).
At present no refreshments will be provided. Polystyrene cups will be made available for members wishing to bring their own drink or to drink water.
Collection of table money.
Exact money only ie £1 or £2 coins, no small change.
A card reader will be introduced at a later date to enable payment via debit/credit card.
Ventilation
Doors and windows will be opened whenever possible. Alternatively air conditioning will be used.
Coats etc
Please hang up your coat giving a distance between the next coat wherever possible

Covid update - please read |
7 members have reported positive since 6th Feb. If you have played in any of the following sessions, you may have been exposed to someone carrying the virus: (a) Thurs 3rd gentle (b) Fri 4th aft. Brierfield Bridge Club
Director Training |
There will be a 3-day directing training course led by Nigel Hopwood enabling members to learn the basics of directing. This will enable more members to take on the crucial role of director and help spread the load of those currently performing this role.
The course will be informal and will not result in an official directing qualification. The course will cover the practicalities of managing the premises and players safety during the session, setting up the play, ending the play and covering the common reasons you would be required to make rulings.
The course will be held at the Club from 10.00am to 12.30pm on Thursday 3rd, Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th March.

We are pleased to announce that we will provide hot drinks from Tuesday 8th February onwards.
The Church have confirmed that we can use the kitchen but that we should ‘leave it as we find it’. We will accordingly run this as a trial to ensure that we can act within the Church’s wishes.
We therefore ask that you bring and take home your own cup. For those who choose not to do that we will provide disposable cups, as there will be no washing up facility.

Message from Bill Gardner
As a number of you will know, it was the intention of Jayne and myself to restart ABC after the COVID restrictions were lifted. However, we had the problem of falling attendances and several of the regulars had said that they were not willing to play through another winter in the Cricket Club. So Jayne and l were due to meet after Xmas to discuss a possible move to the Sailing Club, something that had been suggested after Tony died but Jayne was not over happy with the idea, because it was Tony's club and he liked the Cricket Club. However regrettably Jayne passed away at the end of December. Bridge had been Jayne's life for many years and she would want the club that she and Tony had put so much into over the years to continue, and in the manner that they had run it for nearly 30 years. Pat Welsh had already made some plans to open up her club at the Sailing Club on a Friday, so l have been in discussions with Pat about us trying to run a merged club at the Sailing Club on Fridays starting the beginning of March.
The Sailing Club have agreed we can try this on a trial basis for 4-6 weeks under the ACE banner to see if it will get the numbers and if it does we will then formulate it as a proper EBU members club with a Committee from the beginning of May.

Further delays to Face to Face play
A while ago we were informed that the hall was closing for a new floor which would take about 4-6 weeks to complete, starting at the end of November, hence we have gone back to playing online on Mondays. We have however, recently been advised that whilst the workforce were available, sadly the materials were not. This has now meant that the hall work has been rearranged for January, with an expected completion date of Sunday 13th February. With the present covid situation and as we have to give several weeks notice of cancelling the hall, it has been decided to defer going back to face to face until April. We now intend to return on Monday April 4th
All bridge will be online for the time being, so please register and login to play as usual

New Venue Trial Evening 1st February 2022 at 7.30pm. |
We have successfully found a potential replacement venue for St Peter's Church Hall.
We have therefore decided to hold a free trial event on the 1st February 2022 at 7.30pm
There will be a main section and a gentle section so do make sure you bring as many friends along to make sure the gentle section is viable.
Free Tea, Coffee and biscuits will be available on the day and we would hope to keep this a regular fixture now that the Covid rules are being relaxed on the 27th January.
The new venue is situated at Sacred Heart of Jesus and St John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, London Rd, Bushey WD23 1BA, United Kingdom. Google maps link here
There is a large free carpark situated at the side of the church accessed by Merry Hill Road.
We will be asking for feedback on the new venue on the evening by means of a short questionnaire.
I would like as many members to attend to make this evening successful and provide their honest opinion on the new venue.

Revised BBC Covid rules. |
It is critical that members adhere strictly to these RULES in order to reduce the chances of either getting or transmitting Covid. Clearly no one will become infected if no one at a session has Covid. A huge responsibility therefore falls on each and every member to minimise their chances of introducing Covid. If they should suspect after playing that they may been infectious then they MUST immediately inform all Clubs (Chair or Secretary) which they have attended recently.
Had either Taw Vale or Barnstaple been informed suitably of a members infection (apparent from Nov 9th), then Barnstaple would have cancelled its session of Nov 11th and the consequent risk to those who played on the 11th would have been avoided.
Members are reminded of BBC's RULES in this matter which are intended to be strictly observed and have now been revised to read:
-
All players are expected to have been double [Covid] vaccinated or failing that have had a negative lateral flow or PCR test shortly before attending a BBC session.
-
Members MUST NOT attend any session if they are displaying signs of illness which might be consistent with Covid infection. If a player has ANY symptom of illness, then they should not attend the club unless that symptom COULD NOT BE Covid related.
-
If following a session at which they have played a member realises that they may have introduced Covid then they MUST take a lateral and/or PCR test at the earliest opportunity and inform a club official IMMEDIATELY if the result is positive.
-
Members MUST sanitize their hands on each entry and re-entry to the bridge room.
-
a) Members should respect social distancing on entering & leaving the building, on moving between tables and particularly at the beginning and end of each session. Session results will be made available as soon as possible but it is particularly IMPORTANT that 5b) players DO NOT APPROACH the TD & computer at the end of the session.
-
Club officials or delegates will distribute ALL stationery and apparatus. Moving players should take their bidding box to the next table at each round. Only North should touch the Bridgemate. The movement will be a Mitchell if possible
-
a) The club will ensure the bridge room is well ventilated such that additional layers of clothing may be required. b) Members MUST not close or change the position of any open Window or close the inner doors.
-
The wearing of masks remains an individual's decision.
-
To restrict opportunities to ignore Social distancing, there will be no set refreshment break. Instead players may serve themselves at a suitable break in the play. Players should continue to observe 5) above. Wrapped biscuits only will be available from a table in the main hall.
NB: The above rules form the core of our 'modus operandi' but may change - members will be advised through email, by phone or through this website
Members who choose to attend a bridge session must do so at their own risk and neither the Club nor its Committee accept any responsibility for any consequences of catching the virus.
|
|
|
Wirral Bridge Club
Please Note: Any viral, cough or cold symptoms/or you are on treatment for a respiratory infection either prescribed, or over the counter preparations, you should not attend out of consideration for the other players
NEW - Please note we are now requiring all members to take a Rapid Lateral Flow Test prior to attending all bridge sessions and also that Facemasks are to be worn when entering venues and playing bridge. This change will start on Wednesday 12th January, 2022 and covers both Wednesday and Saturday sessions.
Many thanks and stay safe

ABCD Henworth Bridge Club
An End of Year Message |
An End of Year Message
I don’t think anyone will be sorry to see the end of 2021. After weeks of concern about restarting face-to-face bridge we managed to get going again in July and it was good to see faces we hadn’t seen for around eighteen months. Some of our members have, for one reason or another, decided not to return but that is understandable given the present circumstances. Nevertheless, we have managed to retain a healthy membership of around sixty and we regularly get six to eight tables at our Friday sessions.
It’s also good to see that our standard of play hasn’t suffered during lockdown with Liz and Jean-Pierre gaining the highest overall average percentage of 59.34 for the year. A commendable highest individual percentage of 69.96 was also achieved by Angela and Andrew - targets for the coming year perhaps.
Our Christmas party went well with the red/white wine lubricating the brain cells to the extent that perhaps the six hearts was a little too ambitious! My thanks to those of you who gave a helping hand, particularly Kyoko and Geoff for making sure we had sandwiches to soak up the wine.
I would like to say a special welcome and thanks to our new members who have joined the club. It’s always good to see new faces at the bridge table. We are always looking for new players at ABCD and if you would like to spend a pleasant afternoon in the comfort of the Henfield Hall Garden Room then you are more than welcome. A friendly, welcoming atmosphere is guaranteed. Contact details are given elsewhere on this website.
Finally, we plan to continue our sessions into the New Year and we hope to see as many of you as possible. We will, of course, keep a close eye on government guidelines and should these change we will let you know immediately. I would also like to offer an end of year Seasons Greetings to you all and hope that you keep as safe as you possibly can during these strange times.
Take care,
Your Chairman – Roger Brindley

If you wish to play and wear a mask thats fine and we will do our best to ensure social distancing and sanitiser bottles will continue to be available. Urgent - Please Read - Temporary Return to Online Bridge |
Following the move by the Government to "Plan B", the uncertainty about the impact of the new variant and the approach of Christmas the committee have decided to temporarily go back to online bridge for the next two weeks. With the wellbeing of our members in mind we are being cautious at this difficult point of the pandemic. It is hard to know what to do for the best.
The club sessions on December 14th and 21st will now take place on Realbridge and not at Buckingham Park. No session is planned for December 28th but, unless the situation changes, face to face bridge will restart at Buckingham Park on January 4th.
We understand that some of you do not want to play online and will be disappointed by this decision. Face to face attendance has been declining and this seems the best way to ensure that it is possible to run a session. Most local clubs have made a similar decision.
If you haven't played on Realbridge before we encourage you to give it a try - there is helpful information on the club and Realbridge websites.
The committee really hope that this is the last change we need to make and we can go back to normal early in 2022.
We would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you soon either online or at the bridge table.
Best wishes

I was a little dubious about returning to face-to-face bridge, not only because of covid issues, but also because I dislike playing in games with small fields where boards are only played four or five times. I was very pleasantly surprised therefore when I showed up at Richmond on a Friday afternoon, and found eleven tables in play, a very pleasant atmosphere, and excellent covid protocols in place. I congratulate Julia and the trustees on their efforts and hope that full confidence will soon return to those 'holding off' so that the club may return to full capacity.
I, for one, am looking for an excuse to make another trip to Richmond soon 😀.
All the best, Ed

Collier Row Bridge Club
COLLIER ROW BRIDGE CLUB – IMPORTANT NOTICE |
In recent months the Committee has worked very hard to try to restart Collier Row bridge club on a face to face basis. Unfortunately it has proved impossible to generate more than 2 tables, indeed sometimes fewer than 8 players are available meaning that the session has to be cancelled at short notice. Clearly it is not feasible to run a bridge club on this basis. However, rather than simply abandon all efforts, resulting in the permanent loss of one of the last bridge clubs in the Havering area, the Committee has decided instead to suspend activities with effect from 5th November 2021 until the end of February 2022. In the meantime we will circulate the secretaries of all local bridge clubs to let them know that our premises remain available. We are aware that certain bridge clubs have been unable to restart on a face to face basis as they no longer have available venues. Taking over as the NRCA bridge section could be an attractive option for a club in this position. Being a section of the NRCA rather than a completely standalone Bridge Club means that the venue is cost free. To become members of the club, individuals simply join the NRCA. The table money of £3.50 per session is turned over in its entirety to the NRCA and any expenses of the club are met by the NRCA. Members benefit from free onsite parking and a subsidised licensed bar.

TUESDAY EVENING BRIDGE |
The number of people coming to our Tuesday events is now improving steadily with 6 and half tables on Nov 16th. This is good news and we will be continuing to support these events and review the situation where necessary. The new windows at the institute installed during the last lockdown make providing ventillation to the room much easier and in addition the heating is working efficiently so the rooms are comfortably warm. We are still not providing half-time refreshments but will review this at our next committee meeting.
As always if you have any comments or suggestions we can be contacted at: ardenbc@gmail.com

Monday Afternoon Bridge |
Our trial of Monday afternoon bridge sessions has proven popular with seven and half tables on each of the two test days so we are to recommence these sessions formally from Nov 1st.

Cheltenham Bridge Club
Steady as She Goes..... |
Good news,
The café in the basement of the club is now available for players to take their breaks. As a result of extraction fans running full time in the basement, the air exchange is now easily within the acceptable range. Further tests are being run in the Derek Rue Training room and a separate extractor fan will be installed there around the 19th of November.
While Covid numbers in Cheltenham have decreased significantly over the past two weeks, the rates are still quite high. Please continue to take personal responsibility to keep yourself and others safe.
What you can do to help the club and its members? We encourage you to:
- Stay home if you are at all unwell. (colds, flu and Covid all threaten our members)
- Wash your hands often
- Wear a mask when you are not eating or drinking
- Get your booster jab as soon as you can

♠ ♥ ♦ ♣ CLUB QUESTIONNAIRE - Where do we run our Sessions - we need your views ♠ ♥ ♦ ♣
As we move into Winter it is important for the club to find the best balance of online and face to face sessions. It is the desire of the club to play as much face to face as possible but we understand that this is not the wish of everyone. One possibility is to play Face to Face bridge during the day and online during the evenings. We would therefore welcome your views on:
- Playing F2F during the day and online in the Evenings as a concept
- All day sessions to start at 1pm and evening sessions to start at 7pm (a change in current timings)
- Whether you might be interested in more sessions. We have the following slots free - Monday morning, Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon, Thursday morning, Thursday Afternoon and Friday afternoon.
- Would you be interested in a hybrid session - ie playing online or F2F at the same session. This would be subject to numbers.
We really welcome your input.

Coronavirus Update |
Wednesday evening face-to-face bridge will stop after November 10th.
For health reasons we do not have enough directors and scorers to run the Wednesday games so the committee has decided to suspend the evening face-to-face games until next year when we will reconsider.
We will restart playing online on Wednesday 10th November when the same boards will be played online and face-to-face and you will be able to see the scores of the separate sections and the scores combined which will be used to award the enhanced masterpoints.

Coronavirus - Face to Face Bridge - update |
In March 2020 the AGBC Committee suspended Thursday night Bridge at the Memorial Hall; that position was reviewed regularly in conjunction with Government guidance and Members' preferences to decide when it would be safe to re-commence AGBC’s Thursday Bridge face-to-face nights at the Memorial Hall. The AGBC Committee agreed that face-to-face Bridge resumed at the Memorial Hall on Thursday, 7 October. However, over the past three weeks attendances dropped from 9 to 6 to 4 tables, COVID cases are increasing once again, plus the Memorial Hall environment is not conducive to a pleasant relaxed evening (windows and doors need to be open); therefore the AGBC Committee has decided to suspend face-to-face Bridge for the winter period.
The Committee has agreed that the three current online Bridge games will continue, as long as there is sufficient demand to make them viable from a cost and numbers perspective.
We are investigating the possibility of facilitating other online Bridge events on the RealBridge platform.

Bridge Club Updates
Attendance
The committee at Huddersfield Bridge Club would like to thank all members who continue to support the club in a variety of different ways including attending the club and playing online. However, we would also like to make all members aware that attendance and therefore income in less than 50% of the level it was at in Aug/Sept 2019 before pandemics and lockdowns etc. We are keeping a tight control of costs and will continue to review our expenditure and financial situation which is relatively healthy at the moment. It is also worth pointing out this lower attendance is not just at Huddersfield but at bridge clubs throughout the area and the country. In fact, we are offering more sessions, with more attendees than most clubs.
That fantastic effort is due largely to our great TDs Ian, Linda, David, Robert, Carrie, Dallas and Pam stepping up and allowing us to put on these sessions.
We also wish to thank Denis and Pearl who are about to start lessons for both Beginners and Improvers -details below with the hope this will lead to more club members wanting to practice their new-found skills.

Good News - OUR CLUB HAS RE-OPENED |
It is with great pleasure that we are meeting again in the Fraiser Room. The format has changed - it's now a couple of hours relaxed afternoon bridge at 13:45 on Tuesdays in the warm and dry amongst friends. Our intention is to build up slowly and support new beginners and casual players back into the clubroom. So, we will run informal bridge, maximum 21 boards.

Exeter Bridge Club
Survey sent [in August, link in news item below] to all pre covid members who had an email address – and 84 responded. We are conducting a membership trawl to find out who wants to remain but on profitability grounds we have more virtual members and our games remain popular. Also an issue for us is that we are homeless so building up our financial position remains a key objective.

Wednesday bridge in Leiston |
Face-to-face bridge is gradually returning to normal after lockdown. Thank you to everyone who is playing bridge in Leiston on Wednesdays. Table numbers are between three and four, which is encouraging, but there are too few players for a host rota. Anyone that needs a partner should contact the secretary via email (secretary-hcbc@myphone.coop).
The club is now providing refreshments and players have access to the kitchen to make drinks (no more than two people at a time in the kitchen). The windows will remain open and players are recommended to dress for draughts. Contactless payments will continue.
On 15 December, there will be pre-Christmas wine and mince pies during the Wednesday afternoon session.

Update on the new ventilation system and F2F bridge in the club |
Good news! The ventilation system is now fully operational and was in use for the first time for the F2F bridge session on Wednesday afternoon in the club (20 October) . The new system means we can play bridge in an atmosphere adhering to the guidelines for ventilation (i.e. litres of fresh air per person per second and number of air changes per hour) and in a temperature controlled environment.
There were 8 full tables for the Wednesday afternoon session but, disappointingly, only 3 pairs turned up for the Monday evening session in the club. We hope there will be a session next Monday (25 October) in the club and we have set up an entry page on the website for anyone thinking they might like to play. That way we will be able to gauge if there is sufficient interest to hold a session, and we will be able to let people know if there isn't. See the yellow box on the LHS. Bridge sessions on BBO are continuing as they are and don't need booking in advance.

POSITIVE COVID CASE AT ACES |
Dear members
I am writing to inform you that, unfortunately, one of our members has today tested positive for COVID 19. They were at the Aces club evening on Tuesday 12th October this week and have only mild cold symptoms, but we wanted to alert you to this case.
If you attended on Tuesday and have been double vaccinated you do not need to isolate. However, if you have any new COVID related symptoms since Tuesday it is advisable to get tested. As the most recent COVID symptoms are those of a cold, please do not attend the club if you may have a cold or are feeling unwell.
many thanks

SUSPENSION OF LIVE BRIDGE:
From the committee:
Regretfully, after a trial re-start, we have had no option other than to suspend play at Caen Bridge Club. We anticipate being closed until the Spring or until the threat of COVID is no longer a deterrent.
We would encourage those of our members who wish to play face-to-face bridge to support Braunton, Taw Vale or Barnstaple Bridge Clubs, where they will be warmly welcomed.

Reopening of Wednesday Evening Sessions - 13th October
On Wednesday 13th October we will re-start the duplicate sessions at the Club, face to face. Please arrive not before 7:00pm for a 7:15pm start.
The new ventilation system (see below) and spacing of tables provides a comfortable and safe environment. We realise that some players feel dubious or rusty having not played for some time but don't worry we ask everyone to be patient and understanding.

New Ventilation System |
GOOD NEWS!! The ventilation system in the club room is now fully installed and operational. Fresher air is already being enjoyed and felt. We no longer need to keep windows open during face-to-face sessions in the evening, and we can face the coming winter months without fear of draughts or hypothermia! It would be good if this latest improvement encouraged a few more to return to playing at the club again.

Stamford Bridge Club
Our experience is similar to what I have seen in your webinar. We are reasonably well attended during the day say 60% of pre covid and gradually increasing ,but evenings are sketchy. We have cancelled 2 evenings face to face and the other 2 are well down on numbers. Its going to be a long haul. We are lucky that we received grants because we own the premises so are not going to be financially challenged.

It is expected that numbers will increase as players regain their confidence that it is safe to meet. Harrogate Bridge Club
Change of schedule to Wednesdays
Committee members have agreed to a temporary change in schedule to the Harrogate BC Wednesday session.
As the evening "face to face" session is unlikely to re-commence until mid-October it has been agreed to move the morning BBO session to a 7.15pm slot. This change will only be effective until the Wednesday evening f2f session restarts. It is hoped this change will encourage more members to participate in our bridge sessions particularly as the nights are "drawing in".
Chippenham Bridge Club
(21/9/21) We are now playing a weekly hybrid event which works well provided both formats play the same number of boards and use the same movement. Merging the xml files does the trick. Yesterday, for example, we had 8 tables playing F2F and five playing online. We also play online tournaments on Wednesdays and Fridays.
We don’t see this as a long-term method of playing and will eventually revert to a mix of separate F2F and online tournaments when covid is no longer seen as a threat.
Chichester Bridge Club
What's new?
13th September Temporary Clubhouse Closure: Unfortunately, one of the players who attended the club session on Thursday 9th September has reported that they tested positive for Covid. Following advice, the Committee has decided that the club will close for a period of 2 weeks as per government guidelines. All members who played on Thursday, Friday or Saturday are advised to take a lateral flow test daily for 14 days. These tests are available free of charge from any pharmacy or ordered on-line. There is no need to self-isolate for those who are doubly vaccinated unless you are contacted by the NHS Track and Trace.
We're very sorry for this development and hope that no others are affected. In the meantime, we have reinstated the online BBO sessions for Tuesdays (3.30 start) and Thursdays for the closure period. The Club will re-open the week commencing September 27th, which means that our first face-to-face session will be on Tuesday 28th. As a precaution, once we reopen can we please emphasise that you should not attend the club if you or member of your household feels unwell or is awaiting the result of a Covid test.
Classes, supervised play and gentle bridge have also been postponed/suspended.

Club Snippets June - December 2023 |
Whitenap
Whitenap Bridge Club was formed in 1994 by Mrs Sybil Dickinson, see advert above, a very keen and able bridge player, who had moved to the Romsey area. Mountbatten School was originally chosen as its venue, meeting from 7.00 to 10.00pm on Monday evenings for duplicate bridge. The club now meets at the Age Concern hall, Linden Road in Romsey but retains its original name.
Unfortunately, not long after the club’s formation, Mrs Dickinson’s health deteriorated and she died in 1995. It was her wish that the club continued and the solicitor, acting for her daughter, Mrs Jackie Brown, drew up a constitution changing the status of Whitenap Bridge Club from a Proprietor’s Club to a Members Club’. Mrs. Brown donated to the club all the bridge equipment purchased by her mother and a sum of money which had accrued since the club’s formation.
The first General Meeting was held on 23rd September 1996, at which it was agreed that the club should become affiliated to the English Bridge Union, however, after an EGM in August 2009 the club voted to disaffiliate from the English Bridge Union in 2010. It was also agreed that a trophy should be purchased in commemoration of Sybil Dickinson and this has been played for by club members every year.
Whitenap Bridge Club has been operating very successfully since its inauguration.
The Club reopened on Monday 13th September 2021 after closure due to lockdowns, running Face2Face bridge as before.

From October 2023 AGM: 3.The Chairperson’s report was read out. The death of Rod Bell earlier in the year had been a great loss as he was a staunch supporter of the club. Numbers are low for both face to face and online and the club had struggled to get the numbers up.
Bedford No Fear
Sunday Evening Bridge Sessions |
Hi Everybody,
It is with regret I have to advise you all that, due to a serious lack of numbers, we have decided to suspend the current Sunday Evening Bridge Meetings held at Biddenham Village Hall.
For most weeks since the pandemic our numbers have been between two and three tables and that does not even cover the base costs. We had hoped we would start to see some regular growth by now but sadly that has not happened. Most people do not enjoy playing with such low numbers as it lacks variety and restricts movement.
We plan to try to start it again in the new year when we hope to have in place a players booking in sytem whereby we will know in advance the numbers and we will be in a position to manage a people shortfall more effectivly. Ideally we would like to see a minimum of four tables on a regular basis. We cannot sustain a club meeting with less 16+ people as I am sure you all appreciate.
This email has been sent to all the players that have supported the Sunday club meetings over the last 5 months but if you know of someone who has not received it please pass it on or let me know and I will contact them directly.
We will try again in the new year and thank you for your support since the pandemic.
Regards
Peter Cullum

1989 Bridge Club (Reigate)
July 2023
IT WAS VERY PLEASING TO SEE 10 TABLES ON THURSDAY EVENING THE HIGHEST NUMBER SINCE BEFORE THE PANDEMIC. LET'S AIM TO KEEP THE NUMBERS UP TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF THE CLUB.
Blackheath Bridge Club
We are back..!
We held our AGM on Weds 25th January. Among other things, we voted to remain affiliated to the English Bridge Union. We have also had a changing of the guard, with Rosemary Lloyd taking over as Treasurer. We wish Ron Andrews all the best and many thanks for his 30 years in the role.
Onwards.. we are regularly getting 6 or 7 tables on Wednesday afternoons and we are hoping for more yet.. we've had to order some more handsets to cope with the increase in numbers and we're loving it..!
Our duplicate session is every Wednesday, starting at 1pm for 1.15 (approx. 3 and a quarter hours ).
We also meet every Thursday, starting at 6pm for 6.15.
On Thursday evenings unfortunately we've been unable to get sufficient numbers to play duplicate but there has been a recent surge of interest from new members. Until there are enough members to play duplicate, members have simply enjoyed playing bridge face to face again with other pleasant members. Please get in touch with Ivy Mcgeorge if you are interested in swelling the numbers. I.mcgeorge3@ntlworld.com
