CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

On behalf of your committee, it is with regret because of the dangers of Covid-19, we have decided, along with Government guidelines, to suspend the playing of bridge at the Winscombe Community Centre until further notice.

We will monitor the situation continuously and be in touch to let you know when we expect to resume play.

For those clubs seeking advice please refer to that given by the EBU here.

Situated midway between Weston-super-Mare and Cheddar in North Somerset, we are always pleased to see bridge players, whether members or visitors, and try to ensure a varied programme to suit all standards. Winscombe Bridge Club is affiliated to Somerset Contract Bridge Association and hence to the English Bridge Union. Our premises are at the Winscombe Community Centre where there is ample free parking. Free refreshments are available at all our sessions.

Duplicate Bridge

  • Fridays at 6.50pm for a 7pm start.
  • Boards are computer dealt with print-outs available at end of session
  • Electronic table-top scoring with results shown on screen at end of session
  • Results emailed to participants on conclusion of the final board
  • The club has nine major championships each year with trophies presented at the Christmas party

Social Bridge

  • Thursdays at 1.30pm; just turn up and we’ll provide a partner if you don’t have one

My Learning to play

  • Three EBU associate teachers at the club
  • Each year we start a new two year EBU course

Club membership is inexpensive and you qualify to enter the club competitions and become eligible to represent the club at County events. Again, please come along to enjoy the bridge in a friendly atmosphere with players of all abilities and if you want to know more contact: rharper1568@gmail.com

BEST BEHAVIOUR AT BRIDGE

Asking for explanations and not bidding.

Do not ask what a bid means unless you are intending to bid. Asking for explanation without bidding could, in certain circumstances, be construed as passing unauthorised information to one‘s partner. If one doesn‘t intend to bid, questions of the opponents, should be made after the auction has concluded.

ONLINE BRIDGE GAMES

In the current circumstances with bridge clubs closed and events cancelled, many of our members will be thinking of playing online bridge. Some will already be familiar with the options below (there may be more providers, which could be added to this list if we are informed of them) but here is some information to help those who do not play online, to point them in the right direction to investigate the various options. We will be adding to this as things progress.

Bridge Club Live is a UK based bridge provider (so most of the bridge played is using Acol for bidding), which runs a variety of partnership games for those who subscribe. There is a free Guests room for players to try it out. Since it is British, Acol is the main bidding system in use.

Funbridge hosts our regular daily online robot games, which give EBU master points. Information about them is available on our webpage

Bridge Base Online (BBO) is the largest international online bridge provider. Signing up and playing in many of the games is free, though they do have some tournaments that are paid for. Since it is an American company payment is in dollars and the most common bidding systems are Standard American type (sayc or 2/1).

Update on EBU BBO games with master points.

These have now started and there will be a 12-board game at 2pm, 3.30pm, 7.30pm and another at 9pm.  Each game will cost $1 and you will need to buy some BBO$ in advance.
