COUNTY SIM PAIRS |
County SIM Pairs
Monday 25th March 6pm to 8pm start to suit participating Clubs.
Clubs will run their normal event on that day and should upload their local results to the EBU for NGS and UMS processes. The County will combine the results from the clubs and upload them to the EBU under code 2 with District level masterpoints. A deal file (.pbn or .lin) will be issued about a week before the event, and participating clubs then use this file for their normal Monday 25th March duplicate session. After they have completed their event, they send their results files (.csv or .xml) to the Vice-Chairman. The results will then be combined to give an overall winner.
The deal file will have 30 boards, which should be enough for all our clubs. Some clubs have dealer machines which can load the file and prepare the boards for them. Some clubs are running on-line, so they can just load the file for their event. Some clubs have neither of these advantages, and may decide not to participate. However, if any club producing their boards manually wishes to participate, then whoever is making up the boards can have the hand record. It is also possible that a Club with a dealer machine may be able to prepare boards for another Club.
Would the Clubs who wish to participate please let Roy know as soon as possible. vicechair@lincsbridge.org.uk

BRENDA GOODACRE |
It is with great sadness that we have to report that long time member Brenda Goodacre passed away on Sunday 14th January. Brenda, together with husband Ted, were very keen Bridge players and over the years travelled to tournaments all over the country. Both Brenda and Ted achieved the rank of Premier Life Master, placing them 1st and 2nd in the County Masterpoint Rankings. Closer to home they were members of Scunthorpe Bridge Club, where they spent many years teaching newcomers to our game. They supported many of the County’s events, winning no less than 15 trophies between 1985 and 2018. It was only in more recent years that age prevented their travel away from Scunthorpe. Brenda will be missed. The funeral service will be held at St Hughs Church, Old Brumby at 12 noon on Wednesday 21st February 2024. Graveside service and reception immediately following at Woodlands Crematorium, then on to the Wortley Hotel.

BAINTON TROPHY |
A decision has been made to amend the rules for this competition. With immediate effect there will be no requirement for players to qualify via a club heat. Players can simply enter the Bainton Semi - this will be open to all Lincolnshire players (as defined in the Competition Rules). As in previous years the top 10 or so (according to numbers) will qualify for the final. Both the Bainton Semi and Bainton Final will be played in early 2024. Mark Wardell.

Michael Grant |
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Michael Grant. Michael died unexpectedly at home on 13th November. He will be remembered as an extremely courteous and friendly man, and an exceptionally good bridge player. Michael was a very strong member of the Lincolnshire A team for inter-county events in the early 2000s. Around that time his team also enjoyed multiple successes in Lincolnshire, including winning the Lincolnshire League half a dozen times, the Lincoln Gold Bowl three times and the County Championship teams. He was Chair of the County Bridge Association between 2005 and 2008. In recent years he has focused more on club bridge, where again he has enjoyed much success. He will be greatly missed. Sunday, 29th October 2023, 12:00 noon
Table Money £5.00
This is actually a teams event. Half of the pairs entered will be seeded and the other half will draw a seeded pair to play as team partners in a multiple teams-of-four competition. Seeding will be done by NGS rankings. Where possible the seeded pairs will sit in the same direction. It would help the seeding process if pairs would try and partner a player of like ability. This is an ideal competition for some of our less experienced players to take part in a County event.
There will be a mid-session break for those who wish to bring a packed lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available FOC.
We shall need an even number of pairs. If you have registered but are unable to play, please tell Roy ASAP.

EBU NATIONAL HANDICAP PAIRS |
LINCOLNSHIRE CONTRACT BRIDGE ASSOCIATION
EBU NATIONAL HANDICAP PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
DUNHOLME VILLAGE HALL
26 Honeyholes Lane, Dunholme, Lincoln, LN2 3SH
Sunday, 10th September 2023, 12noon
Entry Fee £6 each player
(to be collected at the table)
Uniquely among national EBU events the results are based on scores handicapped by NGS grade, so anyone has the opportunity to do well on the day, regardless of their experience level. The competition will be played as a single extended session, about 30 boards, scored by match-points (the normal pairs scoring method) across all participating venues in the country. Handicaps will be based on the average NGS of the two players in each pair, so all players will need to have their NGS visible. To do well you simply have to play better than expected based on your NGS - anyone can win this event just by having a sufficiently good day! The results from the heats are combined and matchpointed across-the-field, as if it were a Simultaneous Pairs event – and the combined scores appear on the EBU Sims webpage. This is an open event for any EBU member with an NGS rating.
There will be a mid-session break for those who bring a packed lunch.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available free of charge.

Northern Bridge League |
The second of the 4 days of the Northern Bridge League took place on the 19th August. The “A” division is made up of the first teams from Yorkshire, Manchester, Lancashire, Scotland, Mersey and Cheshire, and Lincolnshire. Our team was:
Rodney Mitchell and Edward Harris
Brian Smith and Andy King
Kiat Huang and Aaron Hutton
Jackie Pfister and Mark Wardell
The “C” division has teams from Cumbria, Lancashire, Scotland, Yorkshire, Westmorland, Mersey and Cheshire, Manchester, and Lincolnshire. Our team was:
Roy Brixton and Jane Brown
Cos Corry and Chris Barnard
Lou Lewis and Patricia Donaldson
Rose Davey and Paul Yarwood
The fates produced one of the most challenging sets of boards I have ever faced. Out of the 40 boards there were 5 slam hands (including a grand), 7 hands that involved intense competitive bidding and contracts ending at the 5 level, and a seeming endless stream of difficult games and part score with bad breaks a common factor. It was a fascinating but very tiring day! In the “A” division, we won 2 of the matches by narrow margins but lost the other 3 by much larger margins. This placed us last in the day.

Northern Bridge League |
The first of the 4 days of the Northern Bridge League took place on the 8th July. There are 3 divisions and we have entered teams in the “A” and “C” divisions. The “A” division is made up of the first teams from Yorkshire, Manchester, Lancashire, Scotland, Mersey and Cheshire, and Lincolnshire. Our team was:
Rodney Mitchell and Edward Harris
Brian Smith and Andy King
Kiat Huang and Aaron Hutton
Jackie Pfister and Peter Coles
The “C” division has teams from Cumbria, Lancashire, Scotland, Yorkshire, Westmorland, Mersey and Cheshire, Manchester, and Lincolnshire. Our team was:
Roy Brixton and Jane Brown
Megan Williams and Nick Holmes
Lou Lewis and Patricia Donaldson
Rose Davey and Paul Yarwood
The relative standard of play in the leagues is well illustrated by a spectacular slam hand. In 7NT, declarer can claim at trick 1 (there are 14 top tricks!). In the “A” division, grand slams were bid by 67% of the pairs (it was a flat board in our match). In the “B” division only 39% of pairs got there, and in the “C” division just 6% - only 1 pair. It was a slow start for our teams. In the “A” division, we won 2 of the matches by very narrow margins but lost the other 3 by much larger margins. This places us in 5th position in the league table.
Full results and play are at https://www.bridgewebs.com/cgi-bin/bwoq/bw.cgi?pid=display_rank&event=20230708_1&club=adamwiseberg

Northern Bridge League |
The last Saturday of the Northern Bridge League took place on the 8th of October. The Lincolnshire team taking part were:
“A” team 1 Rodney Mitchell & Edward Harris, Ron Wall & Brian Smith
“A” team 2 Mark Wardell & Jackie Pfister, Kiat Huang & Aaron Hutton
“B” team 1 Roy Brixton & Megan Williams, Cos Corry & Chris Barnard
“B” team 2 Paul Yarwood & Rose Davey, Patricia Donaldson & Louise Lewis
The “A” team had a reasonable day with 2 wins and a draw, but 2 heavy losses. We were placed 4th out of the 6 teams on the day. The “B” team had a rough day and lost all their matches. The NBL finished with Manchester and Yorkshire in 1st and 2nd places in both the “A” and “B” divisions. Lincs were 4th equal with Mersey/Cheshire in the “A” division and at the bottom of the “B” division. Next year, our 2nd team will almost certainly be in the “C” division playing against less testing opposition. Thanks to all who took part. I hope you all enjoyed the experience and developed your bridge playing against some high-quality opponents.

The opponents in the first round will be chosen at random, but after that the Swiss element comes in and for later rounds you are matched against opponents close to you in the ranking list. Now you play another match and carry on for as many matches as there are in the tournament, moving up or down the field at the end of each round. The better you do the tougher your opponents should be. Normally you can only play against another pair or team once so even if you are leading the field you cannot play against the pair lying second if you have played them before. You will be drawn against the closest contestant you haven't previously played. The result of each match is determined from the match points obtained on each board when your score is compared with all the other scores as in a normal pairs event. The final result is determined by points gained not matches won. An even number of pairs is highly desirable in order to avoid a potential 5-board sit-out. If any of the registered pairs is unable to attend, please let Roy know as soon as possible.
There will be a mid-session break for those who wish to bring a packed lunch.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available FOC.
Pre-entry is required as shown below.
The deadline for entries is 9:00am on Saturday 20th May

Chairman's Questionnaire |
A Message to all LCBA affiliated club Chairs
Hello, The lengthy lockdown caused by Covid 19 has caused a significant drop in numbers attending club bridge across the country, but I hope that bridge has been flourishing (or at least continuing) at your club. The County Association has run a variety of events this year, both face-to face and on-line, and attendance in general has been strong. Face-to-face events usually offer something different from a standard club pairs, and include variations on pairs events, as well as teams events, all played at Dunholme Village Hall. We have also run a Winter League, with two divisions: this is for teams of four, with all matches played on-line. The Knockout Cup(s) will also run on-line. County sim pairs events can be played through your local club, which may be on-line or face-to-face. All details are on the LCBA website at http://www.lincsbridge.org.uk/
The LCBA committee would welcome any suggestions with regard to what we offer to players across the county. With this in mind I have included below a short survey/questionnaire, and wonder if you might share this with your members? You can either forward this whole email, or just the survey. Replies to m.s.wardell@btinternet.com.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas, and a successful 2023!
Survey
1. What are your views on the bridge events that are currently offered?
2. Are there events that you would like to see introduced? These might include Charity events, or restricted events (9-high for example)
3. We currently play our face-to-face at Dunholme Village Hall. Is this a good choice, or should we aim to play at other venues, either instead of or as well as
4. Our face-to-face events are currently held on Sundays, from 1200 to about 1630. Would other days / times be better?
5. We currently have a short break for sandwiches about half way through. Would it be better if events were more sociable, with longer break and food provided?
6. Our players currently have the opportunity to represent Lincolnshire in the Northern Bridge League, and also national competitions such as the Corwen, the Pachabo and the Tollemache. Would you welcome more opportunities to represent your county?
7. Is the balance between face-to-face and on-line about right? Or should we implement some changes?
8. Anything else you think we should provide?
Thanks in advance for your replies, Mark Wardell (on behalf of the Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association)

COUNTY SIM PAIRS |
County SIM Pairs
Monday 12th December 6pm to 8pm start to suit participating Clubs.
Anyone wishing to play online with LDBC, who is not already a member of the club, must register their name, EBU number and email address by contacting Janice Troughton; (janicetroughton@sky.com) or Richard Coulbeck; (coulbeckr@gmail.com), by 10th December 2022.
Clubs will run their normal event on that day and should upload their local results for NGS and UMS processes. The County will combine the results from the clubs and upload them to the EBU under code 2 with County level masterpoints. I will issue a deal file (.pbn or .lin) about a week before the event, and participating clubs then use this file for their normal Monday 12th December duplicate session. After they have completed their event, they send me their results files (.csv or .xml). I will then be able to combine the results to give an overall winner.
The deal file that I create will have 30 boards, which I think should be enough for all our clubs. Some clubs have dealer machines which can load the file and prepare the boards for them. Some clubs are running on-line, so they can just load the file for their event. Some clubs have neither of these advantages, and may decide not to participate. However, if any club producing their boards manually wishes to participate I can let whoever is making up the boards have the hand record. It is also possible that a Club with a dealer machine may be able to prepare boards for another Club.
Would the Clubs who wish to participate please let me know as soon as possible. Roy Brixton. vicechair@lincsbridge.org.uk

LINCOLN GOLD BOWL |
LINCOLN GOLD BOWL
County Knockout Teams event
I'd like to invite you to enter a team for this event - Lincolnshire's only knockout teams event. You need a team of four players, though up to two substitutes are allowed. Players do not all need to be from the same club. Matches will be 24 boards, played as 2 x 12 on BBO - so it's quick, and easy to organise. The final needs to be played before the end of April 2023, so there is plenty of time to get matches in. The winning team (or possibly runners up) is invited to represent Lincolnshire if they wish in the national finals (the Pachabo). First round losers will qualify to play for the Barbara Maplethorpe Trophy (numbers permitting), which is also a knockout teams event. Please support this event, and consider entering a team. You can email me at m.s.wardell@btinternet.com, either to enter a team or to ask any questions. Cost to enter is £20 for the team. Entries ideally by Monday 14th November please. Mark Wardell

Charlie Bucknell Training Weekend |
A training weekend has been organised to assist current and potential Lincs team members to improve their bridge. It will happen at the venue used by Louth Bridge Club (the Indoor Bowls club in Louth, ample parking and a bar for drinks and food) on 1st/2nd October (10:00 to 15:30 on Saturday, 11:00 to 16:00 on Sunday). Charlie Bucknell (bridge professional and England under 26 international player) will be running the course. Charlie is a nice guy and a good teacher. The course will cost £40:00 for the weekend. If you have played in a Lincolnshire team or just feel you would like to know more about bridge beyond the basics, I’m sure you will find much in the course that is helpful. Numbers are limited to 20. If we get more than that, selection will be based mostly on a first come, first served basis. To book a place, contact me by email County Captain or any other method. Rodney Mitchell.

County League |
The Winter League September 2022 - January 2023
Following on from our very successful teams virtual league during the winter of 21/22, I have been asked to set up another virtual league to be played on BBO for the winter of 22/23. We are keen to encourage players of all abilities to become involved in teams bridge and firmly believe this is the best way for players to hone their skills in both bidding and play. This will probably commence around mid-September and run to the end of January, thus giving more time to get matches arranged. We are also hoping that the teams will enter a knock-out competition which will run from November 2022 to March 2023.
Once again, I hope that we can get 12 teams running in two divisions, although 15 teams running in three divisions would be even better.
I am now taking entries. The more teams who enter, the more divisions we can make and the greater the probability of playing against players of a similar standard. I would like to have received all entries by the 9th of September, so that I can put a programme together and perhaps get the first few matches under way by late September. To cover costs to the EBU etc, the fee for entering a team will be £20 per TEAM and this will cover the costs for about 4-5 matches and will work out at about £1 per player per match. Further details can be found under the "Competition" menu on the County web site. If you are interested but you and your partner don't have another pair, please send me your details and I'll try to find another pair of a similar standard to make up a team. If you have any other questions, please ask me and I shall do my best to help you. Guidelines for the league can be seen here: LCBA League Guidelines
Kind Regards, Roy - Vice-Chairman

NORTHERN BRIDGE LEAGUE |
Lincolnshire has entered 2 teams of 8 in the Northern Bridge League for 2022. The opposition will likely be – Yorkshire, Manchester, Lancashire, and Mersey/Cheshire in the A division and these same counties plus Cumbria, Westmorland and North East BA in the B division. The event will be played on 4 Saturdays, each day being a multiple teams contest with about 40 boards being played. It will be played on the "Realbridge" platform. The dates are:
Saturday July 9th
Saturday August 20th
Saturday September 17th
Saturday October 8th
We are looking for pairs (or individuals) who would like to play in some or all of these events. The first team will be facing very strong opposition (some of international standard) but the second team will be in a competition similar in level to Lincolnshire events at Dunholme. If you are interested, please contact Rodney Mitchell either by email (rodney@bridgenotes.co.uk) or any other means. Selection of teams playing will made about 2 weeks before each event.
Rodney (County Captain)

For those who had not met Adrian, he was the Lincolnshire County Bridge Association Chairman for three years and I had the pleasure of working under him as the Secretary. As Chairman, he made it his duty to visit all the Lincolnshire Clubs and play on their club night. He was very much a ‘hands on’ person and had a very pleasant nature. Adrian was a keen Bridge player and played in all the County events.
By the time of the 2021 Annual General Meeting, Adrian was not well enough to attend, but his mind was still active and he sent his congratulations to me on becoming the new Chairman. Shortly after the AGM, I went round to see Adrian at his home near the Dunholme Village Hall. His son, who also plays Bridge, was there and I spent a very enjoyable time chatting about many topics.
I am sure all those who knew Adrian will miss him and on behalf of the Lincolnshire Bridge Association we pass on our condolences to all his family and wish them well in this difficult time.

UKRAINE HUMANITARIAN APPEAL - 2nd APRIL |
Two special Charity events will take place on Saturday April 2nd. Kent, Surrey and Sussex are combining to hold two events in aid of the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal :-
- a Green-Pointed Swiss Pairs on Realbridge (lasting from 11am to approximately 6pm and consisting of 7 7-board matches) with a minimum entry fee of £15 per player - click for the Registration Form,
- a 9(NGS)-High Pairs on BBO for less-experienced players (lasting from 2:30pm to approximately 4:45pm and consisting of 18 boards) with an entry fee of 6$ per player, payable on the day - click for the Registration Form

Surely, there could be no better cause at this time.
Those who are unable to play are most welcome to make a donation (click to see account details - accompanied by an email to the Sussex Treasurer, please) or to donate directly to the DEC appeal if they prefer.

Bainton Trophy Semi-Final |
The Bainton Trophy Semi-Final was held at Dunholme VH on Sunday 30th January. Twenty-two pairs had entered and twenty-one actually played a standard Mitchell movement with a last round arrow switch to give a single winner result. It was a great afternoon of bridge, but slightly marred by the failure of our computer to provide a result at the end of the session. I have entered the results manually from a recovered server file, so please check if you can and let me know if I have made any entry errors. Congratulations to the the overall winners, Michael Stafford & Cos Corry. The top 10 pairs can proceed to the Bainton Final in three weeks time. At least one of the top 10 and possibly another will be unable to attend, so their places will go the the following pairs. Roy Brixton

Random Seeded Teams |
The Random Seeded Teams was held at Dunholme VH on Sunday 7th November. Ten pairs had entered and so we were able to make up 5 teams by averaging the players' NGS rankings. Not strictly random, but it provided some very evenly balanced teams. All pairs played 28 of the 35 boards in play in an American Whist movement. Congratulations to the North/South seeded pair Mark Wardell & Jacqueline Pfister and the East/West unseeded pair Maurice Lynn & Jennifer Knowler who won convincingly. Our thanks to Glynn Elwick for directing. All had a very enjoyable afternoon of bridge, despite the low attendance. Roy Brixton

The East/West winners were Mike Llewellyn & Megan Williams. Our thanks to Glynn Elwick for directing and to Stuart Knox for setting up the scoring system for the event.

John Brocklehurst |
I am sad to report on the passing of John who who died peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday morning 6th November 2021.
I have known John for many years, firstly as my doctor at a local surgery in Boston, then as my Bridge Partner. He was an excellent, caring doctor and his prompt intervention saved my father’s life.
As a Bridge Partner, he was meticulous about learning any new system he was asked to play, and he was a very competent player. We both felt that playing for our county was an honour and, fortunately, John did not mind driving to far-away places like Manchester, Liverpool etcetera. We represented Lincolnshire in the Tollemache Competition on three occasions, and both enjoyed playing in the Northern Bridge League and County Competitions.
I will sorely miss John, as I am sure will all those who knew him. So, on behalf of the Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association, farewell John. Paul Wokes

Northern Counties Bridge League |
The Northern Counties Bridge League involves 6 teams: Yorkshire (1 and 2), Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire, and Lincolnshire. It takes place on 4 Saturdays about a month apart, on the RealBridge platform.
On the 9th October the Lincs team played in the fourth and final day of the Northern Bridge League. The team was:
Ron Wall and Brian Smith
Kiat Huang and Aaron Hutton
Rodney Mitchell and Edward Harris
Mark Wardell and Jackie Pfister
We played five 8 board matches on RealBridge against each of the other counties. This was one of our better days, we won 3 of our 5 matches. There were narrow wins against Manchester (again!) and Meryside/Cheshire, and a convincing win against Yorkshire B. This could not prevent us from finishing last in the league. The overall event was won by Lancashire, with Yorkshire A finishing second. Thanks to all who took part and helped to get the team together.
Full details of this event are at https://www.bridgewebs.com/cgi-bin/bwop/bw.cgi?pid=display_rank&event=20211009_3&club=adamwiseberg. The final league tables can be found at http://www.manchesterbridge.org.uk/NBL/r2021.html

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING |
Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association
At its Annual General Meeting of Members at
Dunholme Village Hall, 26 Honeyholes Lane, Dunholme, LN2 3SU on Sunday 1st August 2021
The new Chairman's address to the meeting
Ladies and Gentlemen – welcome to the Annual General Meeting. Without doubt, the last few years have been difficult for everyone. The Coronavirus has caused devastation throughout the world. This, in itself, has been difficult enough, but in addition, Lincolnshire has lost many players who have passed into the spirit world. So, in my view, this is a time for re-building. Most of you will know that I taught many people to play Bridge. As well as teaching in Lincolnshire, mostly at Louth and Boston, I also taught in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. Although the clubs who arranged for me to carry out the coaching had a vested interest in boosting their membership, I was always more interested in all forms of Bridge: yes, I totally support those players who play competitive Bridge at club, county or national level, but I also support those players who want to play friendly, or not so friendly bridge, in their own homes. And there are in Lincolnshire a lot of players who enjoy playing in Charity Bridge events. In my view, the County Association should support all Bridge players whatever format they choose to play. During the pandemic, Kiat, Roy and others have done a tremendous job in keeping Bridge alive by organising on-line competitions and I think we should applaud all their efforts. As your new elected Chairman, I want to embrace all forms of Bridge. I hope that everyone will put aside any differences they have and work to build a new, stronger County Association. Paul Wokes

DRENE BROWN |
It is with the greatest regret that we have to announce the death of Drene Brown. Drene passed away peacefully in the afternoon of Tuesday 20th July at Sycamore Lodge Nursing Home, Ashby, Scunthorpe. Her husband, Alan was with her. The funeral is on Monday 9th August 12 noon at Scunthorpe Crematorium.
A webcast is required for the service: https://www.wesleymedia.co.uk/webcast-view Login / Order ID: 104286 Password: ubmqfmpa If you experience issues with your login details please call 01536 314 890.
Drene Buck was a prominent member of the Lincolnshire bridge playing community for many years, and since her marriage to Alan in the early 1990s she has been a member of the Scunthorpe Bridge Club. She has won most of the Lincolnshire County trophies, and has represented the County many times in events such as the Tollemache. With Alan she has also won each of the Scunthorpe Club trophies. Drene was heavily involved in the administration of bridge too, at both county and club levels, and a few years ago she was made an Honorary Member of the County Association. It's fair to say that Drene had what is known as 'table presence'; she was often keen to harvest the opinions of fellow players and always ready to represent them at all levels.

As we continue along the government’s roadmap for easing out of lockdown, bridge players will be excited about when they can get back to bridge across the table, and clubs are asking when they can open and what they need to do to be compliant.
Following all the rules will not be an easy matter. Full details of the EBU discussion can be found by clicking on this news item.

ON-LINE BRIDGE |
Bridge activities for Lincolnshire players
There has been a small explosion of interest, which is growing, in all aspects of bridge, be it playing, learning, collaborating, beyond any previous boundaries of club county or country. New partnerships and new teams have sprung up. Players who have never been online before are discovering its pros and cons and making it work for them. Video calls, lessons, surgeries and videos have and are taking place. New relationships and new ways of doing things are being formed. Lotsof private games are also being played online. There are a lot of options to suit (nearly) everyone 👍
Bridge Learning opportunities
* Bridge Surgeries (live video Q&A chat with a "bridge doctor". Kiat has run 4 of these so far, with Rodney Mitchell helping out on a couple of them)
* Teaching Bridge Online. EBED ran a live video (recordings and details here and here) for teachers, with another next week (Tue)., more info here
* Bridge video series on YouTube : e.g. Peter Hollands : Bernard Magee : Andrew Robson : Over My Shoulder Bridge
* Howto use BBO : EBU helpful info to do so ; Creating a Team Match
EBU Matches online

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT |
Warmest greetings from the volunteer bridge players who run the Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association! We hope very much that you are well and also able to enjoy bridge, whether it is playing online, reading books and articles or discussions to improve partnership understandings. Very many bridge players all over Lincolnshire, indeed the country, miss the enjoyment of playing Bridge in person. Because of Coronavirus, a new term emerged for how we played our much-loved game, Face-to-Face bridge, often shortened to F2F bridge. Despite Lockdown and the immense restrictions on getting together in person with others, hundreds of bridge players in Lincolnshire have taken to their tablets, phones and computers to play bridge online, often playing more bridge than they did F2F. Whilst there are obvious disadvantages, players have valued and enjoyed.
- being able to play in the comfort of their own home
- save time and money by not having to travel
- more opportunities to play at various times in the day
- playing with people from all over Lincolnshire and other counties
- representing their county, town or club against others in friendlies
- Joining online bridge classes using video, often with the same software they use to keep in touch with their grown up children and grandchildren
- ability to play informal duplicate games (kitchen bridge!) with just one’s friends
- far fewer calls to the Director, as the pitfalls of bidding or playing out of turn and revoking are eliminated
But when will our bridge clubs reopen? Within the last month or so a handful of English clubs have carefully opened up with small numbers of tables - including Stamford who have introduced supervised play with 5-6 tables. Official government rules, guidelines and advice are constantly changing in a very fluid environment - it is a confusing, complex situation where it is up to clubs if they wish and can reopen safely and economically. The EBU and the LCBA are here to support our clubs when they each wish to do so. Until our bridge clubs reopen, despite a meeting hiatus of 5 months before late June, the LCBA committee (with some new blood on board) decided to meet regularly and have done so more than 8 times since then. Members of the committee, all volunteers, have put in the hours to plan, develop and provide support for playing bridge for players based in Lincolnshire. If you are interested in trying to play online then a natural first port of call is your club, who will be able to point to members who are keen to help their fellow members with advice and/or assistance. If you are already playing online and your club does not yet run online bridge events, then come play on the weekly games organised by the LCBA, called a Virtual Club, which are typically 5-8 tables and very friendly and gentle - all info on the LCBA website (http://www.lincsbridge.org.uk).
We shall be sending out a survey to you soon by email so we can hear the views of as many of our bridge players as possible.
Also do read more about the current state of Bridge in England in the EBU Magazine, September 2020 edition https://view.pagetiger.com/jfetuop/sojft
The LCBA Committee is readily contactable by email (lcba-committee@googlegroups.com) or by phone if you wish from the LCBA website contact list.
Hope to see you online or in person soon.

OFFICERS OF THE LCBA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE |
Nomination for Roles on the Executive Committee of the LCBA
Subject to Governmental legislation the LCBA AGM is scheduled for Sunday 1st August 2021 at Dunholme Village Hall. Members will also be able to participate via video link.
Part of the business at the AGM is to appoint the members of the Executive Committee. Nominations for these roles, supported by two full members of the Association, must be received by the County Secretary (personal email is sufficient for this purpose) not later than 23:59 on Sunday 11th July 2021. The positions requiring nomination are Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer & Competitions Secretary. The positions of Vice-Chairman & Competitions Secretary are currently vacant, and the current holders of the posts of Chairman and Secretary are not seeking re-election.
As the county, and country move out of the various lockdowns, and face to face bridge at all levels begins to re-commence, the role of the LCBA will be central in supporting clubs and promoting inclusive events for all members. Please give some consideration as to how you want your club and county to move forward at this critical time and, more importantly, who you would want to represent you in this.
In addition, if you have any motions that you want to be discussed at the AGM, please forward these to me before 12th July 2021, so that they can be included on the Agenda.
Adapt and survive is the message the LCBA is proud to report, along with this notice of the forthcoming long delayed AGM. Not only are a high proportion of players playing bridge on-line socially, but local league initiatives have proved successful and Lincolnshire’s team have competed in inter-county events. Your LCBA committee have remained active and as we prepare for F2F play to restart, we appeal to club members to step forward and become engaged in this important link between the EBU and your club. Decisions/suggestions on how the ‘new normal’ is delivered, sharing of good practice, ideas on how to encourage new members, as well as the range of competitions LCBA have offered, would increase in value with support on this Committee from YOU.
Andrew Howarth
(Interim Secretary to the LCBA Management Committee)

VIRTUAL TEAMS LEAGUE |
Season 2 of the Virtual League has now been completed and all those who participated enjoyed their matches. Congratulations to Rueful Rabbits and Three Plus One who won their respective divisions. Thank you to all those players who entered the event. I was delighted that all the eligible players who played in season 1 entered for season 2 and a new team also joined. So an especially warm thank you to Bill, Coz, Margaret and Mike, who became known to each other through their mutual love of the game to make a team. I hope you enjoyed the experience.
All 11 of the Season 2 Teams have now signed up for Season 3. It would be really nice if we could make it 12. If there is any pair who would like to take part, please let me know and I will try to match you up.
I am also hoping to field a Novice Division for very inexperienced players. If you would like to play but are concerned you may get a drubbing each match, please bear this in mind. If we can get about 5 or 6 such teams of, say about NGS level 2-4, we can field such a division. If there are players who would like to enter, but do not have a team, please let me know so that I can match you up with others. I am hoping to be able to set up the matches by mid March, so an early response would be much appreciated. It is expected that the league will run from Mid March until the end of May. Please contact me or Alison. Regards, Roy

MASTERS PAIRS |
The EBU Masters Pairs will take place on-line on Sunday 28th February this year. This is an event aimed at players with fewer Masterpoints, and is open to those with a rank below Regional Master. Several of our regular Sunday players will enter the heat being played at Stamford Bridge Club, and we shall not, therefore, run the All Comers Pairs on that Sunday. If anyone would like to play on BBO at Stamford, please either contact me or contact Marcus Witt direct. Full details are on the EBU web site at Masters Pairs | English Bridge Union (ebu.co.uk) This is a two session single day event starting at 1pm. I would encourage all who qualify, and particularly our regular Sunday players, to have a go at this.

NEXT EVENT |
LINCOLNSHIRE CONTRACT BRIDGE ASSOCIATION
All Comers PAIRS
Venue: Cyberspace
Sunday, 21st February, 2:30 pm
Table Money £2.00
The All Comers Pairs will be held on Realbridge every Sunday until further notice, except the Sunday of the month for which the Midland Counties League is scheduled. The table money will be £2.00, to be collected 2 or 3 months in arrears by email invoicing. Invitations to play will be sent out on the Sunday mornings. I will just need your email address. This is the closest we can get to Face-to-Face bridge at this time. The video lets you see your partner and opponents and the audio lets you speak to them. You simply enter a virtual room, similar to a real room, and sit at a table of your choice, where you can see and chat with your partner and your opponents.
Click HERE to be taken to the Realbridge web site, where you can learn all about the software, test your web camera and microphone and register for some 8 board taster sessions. Also, Scunthorpe BC is holding regular sessions on a Wednesday evening and welcomes visitors.
If you intend to play, please let me have your email address (if you have not already given it to me), so that I can add it to my list of prospective players. I will then send you a link on the Sunday morning of the event to enable you to enter the tournament.

These virtual duplicate bridge events are open to LCBA members and their guests.
The sessions will be 18 (or up to 24) boards played in a Mitchell or Howell movement, dependent on numbers. Robots will be available for any player who wants to play but has no human partner. ALL COMERS PAIRS |
The ALL COMERS PAIRS event scheduled for 13th December has been cancelled by order of the Management Committee.
New situations require inventive ways to provide BRIDGE for as many people as possible, at the level they require. To encourage more players to seek out Tournament experience on BBO on-line on Sundays and facilitate our county team to compete at inter-county level, thus stretching their expertise and increasing the profile of Lincolnshire, the Management Committee have taken the above action. The two path approach the committee have embarked upon results in a cancellation of the above date this year. This frees up the second Sunday of the month for the County Teams to compete in the virtual Midland County League without having a date clash or dilution of expertise.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING |
Notice to all Affiliated Clubs and Members of LCBA
Approximately three weeks ago, I sent an email, on behalf of the Committee of the LCBA, to affiliated club secretaries requesting that they canvass their members regarding the issue of our being unable to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) within the prescribed timeframe and format.
Thank you to all those members and the 7 clubs who have made known their opinions and preferences. Of the 7 clubs that responded, 4 were in favour of waiting until a ‘Face to Face’ AGM could be held rather than holding a virtual AGM by video link, with the remaining 3 expressing no strong preference. Consequently, the next AGM will be held on a ‘Face to Face’ basis as soon as practicably possible, in accordance with members’ wishes, taking into consideration any government restrictions and the requirements for the holding of such a meeting, as set out in the constitution and manual of the LCBA.
Currently it is known that at least two key positions, those of Secretary and Competitions Secretary, will fall vacant at the next AGM. All members are invited to consider applying for these, and any other roles on the LCBA Committee. Further details will be published as soon as a date for the next AGM can be confirmed.

CORONAVIRUS |
Dear Club/County Official
The government has just announced that starting on Monday 14th September, social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England. Although there will be some exceptions to this, none seem to cover the situation of any bridge clubs.
This removes any doubt there may have been in our earlier advice to clubs about whether clubs can run any face-to-face games, and makes clear that this will not be possible until such time as further changes or clarifications to the rules may be announced. If suitable changes do emerge in the future and a club wishes to consider re-opening, it will still be essential to follow our earlier advice about completing a thorough Risk Assessment Form (Word or PDF) and complying with all remaining social distancing rules. The age and health-vulnerability or risk-status of club members will also need to be taken into account when making any such future plans.
We have been making decisions for our own EBU congresses and competitions on a monthly basis, for the forthcoming three-month period. We have cancelled all such events until the end of November and will review December at the end of this month. If we feel able to hold a face-to-face Year End Congress in London, then we will also hold an online congress at the same time for all those who can’t or don’t want to come to the London congress. We will not hold a live Northern Year End Congress.
Kind Regards
Sam Kelly

MAURICE LADLOW |
Lincolnshire has lost yet another of its bridge players. Maurice passed away peacefully at home on the morning of 17th October. Maurice just loved bridge at Club, County and National level. He first learnt the game as a young soldier in Hong Kong. The highlights for him were when Lincolnshire qualified for the Tollemache Final and reaching the 5th round of the National Gold. The day before he died he was still dreaming and whispering bridge terms - 2NT, 3NT, Jack of Hearts, etc and when Mo asked him what the contract was, he said 6NT. He just adored the game. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
I read with great sadness of the death of Maurice. One of his two favourite bridge memories was when Lincolnshire qualified for the National Finals of the Tollemache. I share that memory in that I was Non Playing Captain of that Team. What a wonderful weekend we had. Our success was particularly noteworthy in that in those days only six finalists went forward from the qualifying round ; now it is eight. Throughout Maurice and Mo were a 'go to' pair for me, always steady and dependable. Commiserations to Mo. As always best wishes, Julian (Foster)

REALBRIDGE |
I have been in contact with the organisers of Realbridge and they have offered us the opportunity of holding our own (free) session. This will take place on Wednesday 28th October at 7:15pm, probably 18 boards. I will direct the session, closely observed by an expert. If anyone would like to attend, please let me have your email address so that I can add you to my list of attendees. Personally, I think it provides a much closer experience of face-to-face bridge than BBO. You arrive in a virtual room, where you select and sit at a table opposite your partner. You and the other pair can have your video and audio switched on so that you can see and speak to each other. Bidding and play follows normal face-to-face rules, so announcing and alerting is done by your partner as usual. I know that some have expressed concern that old tablets will not work. Possibly, but you can still use this software, like BBO, with no video and no audio. It would just not be so much fun. Full details are on their web site at Realbridge. Even the TD can play. Oh, and it is cheaper than BBO. Webmaster.

BRIAN KNOWLER |
It is with the greatest regret that we have to announce the death of Brian Knowler. Brian died peacefully on the morning of Monday 3rd August at Castle Hill. His wife, Jenny, and his son and daughter were with him. Brian played bridge in Scunthorpe and the County for many years in the sixties, seventies and eighties, during which time he was also President of the association. Brian was a regular winner of county events, and, playing with Mike Allen in particular, he was also successful nationally. His ill health meant that he has been unable to play for many years - though he still kept an interest in what was happening in both the club and county. The County would like to send its deepest condolences to Jenny, to Brian's son, to his daughter, to his four grandchildren, and to his great granddaughter. Brian's funeral will be at Woodlands Crematorium at 12:40 on Tuesday 18th August. The service will be available on webcast until 25th August. Anyone wishing to log on should use the following information:

Towards the end of his bridge career Julian Foster was his regular partner. Julian says "Intrinsically he was a Strong Club adherent but, playing with me, he lowered his sights and played Acol with four card majors and a weak No Trump.
At the table he was 'Old School'. Play the hand, put the cards away and say nowt."

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE |
Over the past two weeks there has been a number of significant changes in the composition of the LCBA committee.
The resulting Committee met on 23rd June and agreed that one of the first actions actions should be that I, as acting Chair, record on behalf of the LCBA , our sincere appreciation, on behalf of all the LCBA (Committee and Members) for the time and effort given - and the achievements made - by those departing committee members, Adrian Underwood (Chairman), Glynn Elwick (Competition Secretary) and Sue Barraclough (Secretary).
The volunteer roles that Adrian, Glynn and Sue fulfilled for the County are crucial in helping our much loved game of Bridge grow and thrive at a regional level and we are indebted to them and the other LCBA members who step up to help us all.
Whilst thanks are due to all, forgive me for highlighting Glynn Elwick, with whom it has been an absolute pleasure to have worked with over the past year on new Competitions. For years the main output of the Committee for the Association was Competitions and that was all down to Glynn. In case you missed the news, in 2019 Glynn was recognized at the national level by the EBU, a well-deserved recipient of the Dimmie Fleming Award, for his tireless efforts over the decades and considerable achievements for Lincolnshire.
A virtual Management Committee Meeting was held on 23rd June, and the following members were appointed to fill the existing vacancies on an interim basis, until such time as a general meeting can be held.
Chairman: Kiat Huang
Secretary: Andrew Howarth
Competitions Secretary: Alison Howarth

JOHN GAUNT 1952-2020 |
It has come as a great shock and sadness to report that John Gaunt died on Saturday, 13th June, after a short illness (not Covid). He will be very much missed in the bridge community as he was always a keen supporter of all County events when in this Country and also represented the County on several occasions. John was a past Chairman of Lincolnshire bridge. Together with his wife Wendy, John taught several players to begin playing bridge and helped others to improve. Sixteen years ago he started teaching and playing with Debbie Burton who had never played before and is now an established player. Debbie said that she owed such a lot to John for which she is extremely grateful and wanted others to know this. His death will be a great loss to Lincolnshire bridge. Our thoughts and condolences go to his wife Wendy, his 2 sons, his daughter, his grandchildren and his friends.

BAINTON TROPHY |
Bainton Trophy
The Bainton Trophy final was played at The City of Lincoln BC on Sunday 16th February. The winners were Mike Llewellyn & Megan Williams closely pressed by Mo Parsons & Maurice Ladlow. 39 boards were played in a 6½ table Full Howell movement carefully arranged over 9 tables so that 3 sitters could be accommodated. Our thanks go to Stuart Knox who ably directed the event and produced instant results.
We would also like to congratulate Mike Llewellyn who won enough green points in this event to enable him to qualify as a Life Master. Well Done!
Mike & Megan, Adrian & Andy and Simon & Joanne will represet the county at the Corwen Trophy in May.
The next LCBA open event is the Swiss Pairs, to be held at Dunholme Village Hall on Saturday 14th March.

Garden Cities Qualifier |
Garden Cities Qualifier
The County heat of the Garden Cities Qualifier event was held at Scunthorpe BC on Sunday December 8th. The event is a teams of Eight competition where the players represent their Clubs. Only three of the Affiliated Clubs in the County provided a team which is a truly disappointing response from our Clubs. Scunthorpe provided three teams and Louth Duplicate and Heighington provided a team each. None of the other Clubs raised a team. Each team played four matches of eight boards each match so that meant 32 boards in total. The event was well directed by Stuart Knox and was played in a very friendly atmosphere. After all the dust had settled and the results had been collected and checked it was confirmed that Scunthorpe (Llewellyn) had won the heat with a score of 60 VP's and runners-up Louth Duplicate scored 52 VP's. This means that Scunthorpe have won the County heat for the first time in several years. They now go forward to represent the County at the Regional Final at Bradford BC in April next year. The Scunthorpe team comprised Stuart Knox & Keith Stewart, Pete Stackhouse & Glynn Elwick, Mike Llewellyn & Megan Williams, Andy Lewis & Roy Brixton. Well done to all.
The next event will be the All Comers Pairs at 12:00 on 5th January at Dunholme.

ALL COMERS PAIRS |
November 2019 All Comers
Eleven pairs turned out for the All Comers Duplicate Pairs at Dunholme Village Hall yesterday ( November 24th ). Everybody had a very enjoyable time during the duplicate session directed by Stuart Knox. Not only did Stuart Direct the event but, partnered by Jeremy Wong, they won the event in considerable style scoring an impressive 67%. To make it a good session for Scunthorpe BC, runners-up were Andrew & Louise Lewis who scored 58.83%. Gloria Elwick provided an excellent selection of refreshments for the half-time interval. Many players look forward more to the interval than to the bridge! Thank you, Gloria.

Players must have been a member of their Club for at least three months. Players please note that refreshments will be limited to sausage rolls/mince pies/tea and coffee.

AGM & Herbert Trophy Pairs |
AGM & Herbert Pairs
The Association's AGM was held at Dunholme on Sunday 2nd June 2019. Turn out was good with more than 30 members attending. The Officers' reports were generally good, attendance at the County events was stable or improving and plans are afoot for the County to participate in Northern and Midland League events once more. We also look forward to our Vice-Chair's report following his visit to the EBU meeting at the Chelsea Bridge Club in May. Paul Wokes has stepped down as Secretary and we give him our thanks for all his years of service to the County. He will be replaced by Sue Barraclough. All other officers and committee members remain as last year. Following the AGM, 16 pairs fought for the Bill & Eileen Herbert Trophy. Congratulations to the winners, Maureen Parsons & Maurice Ladlow, closely pursued by Chris Phillips & Alan Millington.
Thanks to all those who supported this event, and to our Competitions Secretary Glynn Elwick for producing another very enjoyable afternoon of bridge.
The events for next year will be published as soon as the Committee has approved them.

Local Primary School wins at Stamford Inter-School Tournament |
Inter Schools Tournament
Cathy Platt reports a wonderful result at the Stamford Inter-School Bridge tournament run on Friday 21st June 2019, where Ellison-Boulters CofE Primary School , located 5 miles from Lincoln, won 1st Prize! (N/S Main Bridge Category)
Cathy was bouncing with delight and says: "There were 100 children taking part in this event from 12 different schools, mostly in the south of the county, plus Peterborough area. This school Ellison-Boulters is in a village called Scothern, 4 miles NE of Lincoln. They have 30 minute lunchtime sessions weekly. Just think what Lincolnshire kids could do with a structured programme of after school clubs?"
Lincolnshire county player and U26 England squad member, Aaron Hutton, assisted at the event with his team-mate Kripa Panchagnula recollecting: "It was a wonderful event, with 7 tables of bridge and many more tables of minibridge. It was great to help ensure the event ran smoothly and I enjoyed watching the children try to decide how to bid and how to play their contract. The children had a break half-way through, in which they were excitedly comparing their results trying to work out who had more plus scores. The event also allowed the helpers and Alan Shillitoe to spot potential talent which they can try to push forward, some of which I heard have been invited to U16 training sessions. My personal favourite moment was when I saw a young girl finesse the T with KJ96 opposite Q8, which worked out perfectly on the hand."

DAVID CALDOW |
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of David Caldow on 23rd April. David had suffered long and very debilitating illnesses for many years and sadly became a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic. He was a long time member of the LCBA and Scunthorpe BC, where his name appears on most of the honours boards and many times on some. He was an able and fierce opponent at Club and County level and also participated in many National events. Our thoughts and condolences go to his daughter, Catherine and his family and friends at this awful time. Because of the current Covid-19 regulations his funeral will only be able to be attended by his very close family, but I'm sure we will all be thinking of them at this sad time.

Inter County Bridge |
Northern Bridge League
* Northern Bridge League: 1 x Team of 8: 12th October 2019 at Bolton BC
The Lincolnshire team converged on Bolton from multiple directions and all arrived in good time. The Bolton club is in a quirky old building but the main room provided excellent playing conditions and the half time food provided was equally good. Our bridge was not so good, and the team finished in last place on the day, but we won against two teams and scored 52 VPs which was our second best result of the series and a big improvement over the 23 VPs of the previous event. In the cross IMPS pairs rankings, Aaron and Rodney were placed 3rd , and John and Paul 5th which was pleasing result in a very strong field. The overall result of the league was a win for Manchester, with Yorkshire second. Lincolnshire finished last, but not by a large margin. We had one fantastic performance on the second weekend, but this was not enough to counterbalance the other three results. (Thanks to Rodney Mitchell for this contribution). Full results, analysis and hands are on:
* Northern Bridge League: 1 x Team of 8: 17th August 2019 – at Brierfield (Burnley)
The four pairs who travelled more in hope than expectation to Brierfield near Burnley to represent Lincolnshire in the second round of the Northern Bridge League on Saturday 17th August found the lengthy journey to be more than worthwhile as we emerged triumphant at the end of the day! Lying third at half time, we kept up the good work and knew by the end we had done well, but even so to be declared the winners to the general amazement of all concerned (not least ourselves!) was a very pleasant surprise. Against strong teams from Yorkshire, Manchester and Lancashire we won four out of six matches, only losing the other two narrowly, for a VP total of 75 out of 120, a comfortable 8 VPs clear of second place. We were also way ahead on imps. There were solid performances all round, but especially from the scratch partnership of Kiat Huang and Andy Lewis who were top of the cross-imp ranking list out of all 28 pairs, a magnificent achievement, congratulations! Their highlight was being one of only three pairs out of twelve to bid and make the grand slam on board 5 of session 2. After two rounds Lincolnshire have now moved up to fifth in the cumulative table, let's aim for another strong performance in the next round at Bradford in September. (Thanks to Mike Llewellyn for this contribution)
* Northern Bridge League: 1 x Team of 8: 13th July 2019 – at Sheffield BC
Lincolnshire joined the 'big boys' after a few years absence- many familiar faces, a few years older! and nice to see Graham Jepson again, as match held at his bridge club in Sheffield. The general standard was higher than last week (John Holland and Brian Senior were there) but one noticeable feature is the pressure exerted by high risk, high pressure bids. On one hand a 2 Heart opening ("both majors, less than opening strength") was a 4-4 shape 6 count!! One of the main difficulties in our county is the relative inexperience against such tactics and in high pressure situations against strong opposition, which can only be rectified by playing and practicing. Obviously we made quite a few mistakes collectively, but as in tennis there are 'forced' and 'unforced' errors! Despite our drubbings by Yorkshire it was an enjoyable day, winning 2 and losing 2 of our other 4 matches but two 0-20 hammerings, and thanks to Kiat for his enthusiasm and organisation in setting things up for our participating in the event. (Thanks to Brian Smith for this contribution)
* Midland Counties Challenge Bowl: 2 x Teams of 4: 7th July 2019 - Spondon
With two teams (Brian Smith & Ron Wall, Maureen Parsons & Maurice Ladlow, Kiat Huang & Aaron Hutton, Nick Hunter & Ruby Schnalke) we represented Lincolnshire in the Midlands Counties Bowl in Spondon on Sunday the 7th July. After the first half we were hopeful for more having been situated at 2nd and 4th position. But in the second half we lost another position and ended up 3rd and 5th in the ranking. An acceptable result of 16 playing teams from 10 counties. (Thanks to Ruby for this contribution)
Follow this link for the full results
* President's Cup: 1 x Team of 10: 29th-30th June 2019 – at Bradford BC
A team from Lincolnshire accepted an invitation to represent the County, for the first time in many years, at the President' Cup weekend, held in Bradford at the end of June. The President's Cup is a teams of eight event played for by, mainly, Northern Counties. Competing in this event was the first step in a new County initiative, led by Glynn Elwick and Kiat Huang, to build a bigger Lincolnshire squad that can participate in more representative events and, ultimately, help us all play better bridge. It was a high standard event but the team fought hard coming 8th out of 9 Counties. Our team was welcomed warmly by the other Counties and it proved a very pleasant competition. We hope attendance at the President's Cup will become an annual fixture. Even more important was a spirit of togetherness amongst the six pairs who took part. Many thanks to Kiat especially for ensuring all the arrangements and helping to build a sociable environment in which to play. (Thanks to Chris Phillips for this contribution)
The following pairs represented the County in the 1st of the 4 fixtures in the Northern Bridge League A Division.
Brian Smith & Ron Wall, Kiat Huang & Aaron Hutton, Nick Hunter & Ruby Schnalke, Paul Wokes & John Brocklehurst
The followiing pairs represented the County in the 2nd of the 4 fixtures at Brierfield on 17th August.
Malcolm Hammond & Mike Waters, Keith Stewart & Andrew Green, Kiat Huang & Andrew Lewis, Mike Llewellyn & Glynn Elwick
The following pairs represented the County in the 3rd of the 4 fixtures in the Northern Bridge League A Division.
Kiat Huang & Andrew Lewis, Nick Hunter & Ruby Schnalke, Paul Wokes & John Brocklehurst, Rodney Mitchell & Aaron Hutton
The followiing pairs represented the County in the 4th of the 4 fixtures at Brierfield on 17th August.
Rodney Mitchell & Aaron Hutton, Nick Hunter & Ruby Schnalke, Paul Wokes & John Brocklehurst, Jeff Jeffery & David Pettengell
We would encourage all County players who are interested in these, or other, competitions to make themselves known to Glynn and Kiat. Through continued participation we can put our County on the bridge map and, hopefully, start to contend. Selection for the teams are open to all and already we have been in touch with more than 30 of the most experienced and in-form players in the county. Additionally, if you and your partner wish to be considered please contact either Glynn or Kiat who will add you both to our availability checker (so you can show for which events you are available). We are also interested in growing opportunities to represent the county at all levels of ability from improvers up to advanced players and this could take the form of inter- or intra-county events between clubs or representative teams.

Andrew Green & Roy Hughes |
I am devastated to hear the news of Andrew & Roy. Prior to moving to Devon in 2002 I partnered Andrew regularly. Playing with him was never without interest! He always insisted on playing "System" ( i.e. his system!) because it was "in the Acol Book.......". Although I never partnered Roy I saw him regularly at the bridge table. One of my best memories of bridge 'up north' was when I was NPC of a Lincolnshire Tollemache Team (containing Roy and Andrew) which qualified for the National Finals (and that was in the days when only six counties went forward). Very best wishes to all others in the Lincolnshire CBA who might remember me. Very best wishes, Julian Foster
It is with even greater sadness that I must report a second death within a week. Andrew Green died on Tuesday in Leicester Hospital after a short illness. He was well known in the County and had won many competitions, including the Corwen Trophy with partner Dennis Mellor. His death follows that of Roy Hughes, who died in the early hours of Tuesday after falling over in his drive last week and banging his head seriously. He has been a leading light in Lincolnshire bridge for many years, including (amongst other things) Chairman and Secretary of the County Association. He was the current Chairman of both Heighington BC and Bassingham BC, both of which are vibrant centres for bridge in the County. His enthusiasm, energy and organisation will be greatly missed. Members and Officials of the County organisation offer their condolences to all of the friends and family both of Andrew and Roy.
Funerals as follows:
Andrew Green is on Thursday December 5th at 1:00pm at Wakefield Crematorium.
Roy Hughes is on Monday December 9th at 3:10pm at Lincoln Crematorium.

Great Northern Swiss Pairs |
Andy Lewis & Kiat Huang attended the great Northern Swiss Pairs over the weekend of 5/6th October. They started off slowly with two very heavy defeats, but after that they worked their way steadily up the table. Starting the last round they were in 4th position and playing at Table 1. They were playing the best pair in the competition. The leaders had already won the event because they were so far in front. They managed to win the last match 13-7 VP's. but that was not enough to put them above 4th place. However, a very strong showing by them. Well done

EBU Seniors Congress Swiss Pairs |
Lincolnshire's Graham Marshall from the Louth Duplicate/Central/Alford clubs recorded the very strong result of 4th in the annual EBU Seniors Congress Swiss Pairs in Eastbourne at the weekend, with his partner James Bond. This is a tremendous result, earning them 2.13 green points, but Graham also performed exceptionally well in the Swiss Teams on the Sunday coming 4th with James in the X-IMPs ranking of all pairs, in a very strong field, pulling their team of four up to mid-way in the field. A magnificent set of results!

Entries for Lincs Gold and Lincs League |
Lincs Gold
The Lincs Gold is the main County teams competition and is a knockout event and is played for Green Points. Each match in the Lincs League is played over 24 boards (12 boards against each pair) and each team plays each other team once. Matches have to be played by the end of the season. One player in each team has to be designated as Captain. This person organises the matches. At the last County Committee meeting the draw for the event was made by our Chairman. Since five teams have entered this year, we will have one preliminary match and then the semi-finals.
Teams
Mo Parsons (Capt)/M Ladlow/D Burton/J Gaunt/D Mellor
Glynn Elwick (Capt)/P Stackhouse/M Llewellyn/K Stewart
Paul Wokes (Capt)/John Brocklehurst/Dave Pettengell/Nick Hunter/Ruby Schnalke
Chris Phillips (Capt)/Alan Millington/John Hill/Maurice Lynn
Mark Wardell (Capt)/Kiat Huang/Sue York/Reg Loosley/Maria Nelson/Aaron Hutton.
The preliminary match is Wardell (home) v Wokes (away). This match is 24 boards (32 boards by agreement of Captains). Please try and get this played before Christmas. This match has been played. Wardell (Huang/Loosley/Hutton) beat Wokes (Brocklehurst/Hunter/Schnalke) by 37 IMPs. Wardell will now play Elwick in the semi-final.
The semi-finals are Parsons (home) v Phillips (away) and Wardell or Wokes (home) v Elwick (away). These matches should be 32 boards (40 by agreement of Captains). Please try and get these matches played so that we can get the competition completed so that an entry can be made for the Pachabo competition. We will sort out the home team for the Final at a later date. Good luck to all. Glynn.
The semi-final between Parsons and Phillips has been played. The match was won by Phillips by 66 IMPs and they now go forward to the Final. The second semi-final was won by Wardell (Huang/Hutton/Loosley) by 28 IMPs. The final will be between Phillips and Wardell. If there is a demand, a team can go forward and represent the County in the Pachabo Cup later in the season. Good luck to both teams.
Lincs League
We have four teams entering the competition. This makes it that each team plays three matches. I will try and make it as equal as possible because two matches will be at home and one away and vice-versa. There will be six matches in total.
Teams
Mo Parsons (Capt)/M Ladlow/D Burton/J Gaunt/D Mellor
Glynn Elwick (Capt)/P Stackhouse/M Llewellyn/K Stewart
Chris Phillips (Capt)/Alan Millington/John Hill/Maurice Lynn
Mark Wardell (Capt)/Kiat Huang/Sue York/Reg Loosley/Maria Nelson
The matches will be Parsons (home) v Elwick, Parsons (home) v Phillips, Wardell (home) v Parsons, Phillips (home) v Elwick, Elwick (home) v Wardell, Phillips (home) v Wardell. Usual rules apply. Results to me after each match. Please try to get matches played within a reasonable time. It seems very difficult to imagine that we will not be able to get six matches played before the end of the season but you never know. Good luck to all. Glynn.
Parsons beat Wardell by 22 IMPs which is 15-5 VPs and Parsons beat Phillips by 72 IMPs which is 20-0 VPs, Parsons beat Elwick by 14 IMPs which is 13-7 VPs. This means that Parsons has won the Lincs League for 2019. However, remaining fixtures should be played. Congratulations to Parsons on winning the League. Elwick beat Phillips by 14 IMPs which is 13-7 VPs. Wardell beat Elwick by 24 IMPs which is 15-5 VPs. Wardell beat Phillips by 53 IMPs which is 19-1 V.Ps.

County Swiss Pairs |
The Swiss Pairs was held at Dunholme Village Hall on 17th February 2019. 23 pairs had entered, resulting in a completely new movement experience for Helen. We played six 6 board rounds except that one round had a 3 board sit out. The computer seemed to know what was happening and produced results after each round telling the players where to go next. Congratulations to winners Ron Wall and Brian Smith, who seemed to spend all their time at the top table, closely followed by runners up Malcolm Hammond and Mike Waters. The results showed a tightly fought contest with only 10 VPs separating the first six placings.
Thanks to all those who supported this event, to our director Helen Barr and our Competitions Secretary Glynn Elwick for producing another very enjoyable afternoon of bridge, and to Gloria for producing a very appetising buffet lunch.

Veterans Cup |
The Veterans Cup was held at Dunholme Village Hall on 08/05/2016. 14 pairs took part in the event. This meant that a full Howell movement could be played over 26 boards. This meant that the Veterans were not taxed too much and could get home early. The whole afternoon went very well and the event was played in a very friendly spirit.
When everything had been scored up the result was very close. Third were Maurice Ladlow and Mo Parsons with 56.97%. In second place came Reg Loosley and Mary Jo Mangion scoring 62.18%. The winners, by two Match Points, were Pete Stackhouse and Glynn Elwick, they scored 62.82%.
Thank you to all of the members who supported this event. We only have a couple of fixtures to fulfill now. The All Comers pairs will be held at the City of Lincoln playing room on 15/05/2016 and the AGM will finish the season off and be held at Dunhome Village Hall on 26/06/2016. We need to make sure that enough members turn up to the AGM to make the meeting viable. At least 25 members are needed to do that.
Glynn.

Novice team from Lincolnshire wins Harrogate Congress Swiss Teams |
12 Feb 2019
The main teams event at the Harrogate Congress was won by a Lincolnshire team of relatively inexperienced players at this level, Kiat Huang, Mark Wardell, Nick Hunter & Ruby Schnalke. The team played remarkably well as they had not played as a team before and had not won any previous EBU event. The Congress was run by Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association on behalf of the EBU.

NEW - House of Lords visit |
The fantastic work being done within the County at three of our schools is being rewarded when, in early July, a group of @ 20 young bridge players from the county will visit Parliament for a game of bridge against a team from the House of Lords along with a visit to the Upper Chamber.
This is a brilliant opportunity to showcase junior bridge in the County and a massive well done to all involved in setting this up.
If anyone in the County wants to take the initiative and help develop schools bridge where they are, contact Deidre Fell or Reg Loosley, who have gained great experience in this over the years.

Best Behaviour at Bridge |
All members who play in our County, be that within our clubs, or in County events, are reminded that they are expected to behave in line with the EBU standard for Bridge and the Best Behaviour code.
In particular the following points are important:-
- Greet others in a friendly manner and be a good host at the table
- All members playing in County events should have completed convention cards and be expected to give proper explainations of their bids
- The TD decisions are to be respected
