Release 2.19p

It is with the greatest regret that we have to announce the death of Drene Brown. Drene passed away peacefully in the afternoon of Tuesday 20th July at Sycamore Lodge Nursing Home, Ashby, Scunthorpe. Her husband, Alan was with her. It is expected that the funeral, which will be an interment, will be in early August.

Drene Buck was a prominent member of the Lincolnshire bridge playing community for many years, and since her marriage to Alan in the early 1990s she has been a member of the Scunthorpe Bridge Club. She has won most of the Lincolnshire County trophies, and has represented the County many times in events such as the Tollemache. With Alan she has also won each of the Scunthorpe Club trophies. Drene was heavily involved in the administration of bridge too, at both county and club levels, and a few years ago she was made an Honorary Member of the County Association. It's fair to say that Drene had what is known as 'table presence'; she was often keen to harvest the opinions of fellow players and always ready to represent them at all levels.

Lincolnshire Green Point Pairs

Incorporating the annual Lincolnshire

Championship Pairs

Congratulations to Jack Terry and Ian Walsh on winning the Lincolnshire Green Point pairs event with an excellent score of 65.23%, just pipping Trevor Hails and Chris Ryall who finished with 64.55%.
The highest finishing Lincolnshire pair were Bill Crymble and Anthony (Cos) Corry who win the Arthur Wilson Trophy. Other trophy winners are Richard Tupper and Peter Sharman, for the Lucy Osbourne Trophy awarded to the highest placed Lincolnshire pair where both players have attained the age of 65+, and to Mark and Marion Brackley in winning the Margaret Briggs Trophy awarded to the highest placed Lincolnshire Pair under the EBU rank of Master. It is hoped to present these trophies at the next AGM.
The three highest ranking Lincolnshire Pairs will be invited, at the Association's expense, to represent the County in the forthcoming Corwen Trophy competition which will hosted by the EBU, on the RealBridge platform, over the weekend of 5th and 6th of June 2021.
The pairs qualifying to represent the county in this prestigious event are:

Bill Crymble and Anthony (Cos) Corry
Kiat Huang and Rodney Mitchell
Jacqueline Pfister and Mark Wardell

Congratulations to all our winners and qualifiers, and sincere thanks to all the participants for their support and in ensuring that the competition took place in such a friendly and sporting atmosphere.
Finally, the Committee wishes to express its thanks to the director on the day, Stuart Knox, and the county’s technical ‘guru’, Roy Brixton, for ensuring the smooth running of this event, and without whom the staging of such competitions would not be possible.
We look forward to welcoming you again to our next LCBA event, the Ladies and Men’s Pairs event, on Sunday 16th May 2021.

Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association

Annual General Meeting 2021

Following the announcement by H.M.Government, on Monday 12th July 2021, that the restrictions imposed as part of the actions designed to limit the spread of the Covid-19  virus are to be lifted with effect from Monday 19th July 2021, the Management Committee of the LCBA are pleased to confirm that the Annual General Meeting of members will take place as previously announced. The details are as follows:

Annual General Meeting of Members
Dunholme Village Hall
26 Honeyholes Lane

The meeting will commence at 13:30.

Although the restrictions will have been lifted, the safety and wellbeing of our members remain of paramount concern. Consequently, we will be asking those attending the meeting to wear masks, unless you would have normally been exempt, and to avail themselves of the hand sanitisers that will be provided. Seating will be placed the recommended distance of at least 1 metre apart. There will also be a separate entrance and exit, both of which will be clearly marked. A ‘Welcome’ desk will be situated close to the entrance. It would greatly assist the organisers of the AGM if those members intending to attend in person would inform the Chairman or Secretary by email as soon as possible. Addresses are available on the LCBA website. This is to facilitate forward planning. The possibility of providing a video link to the AGM, for those unable, or who feel uncomfortable, to attend in person is currently being investigated and details will be provided as soon as possible.

However, in view of the continuing rise in the reported number of Covid-19 Delta Variant infections, the Management Committee has decided not to hold the pairs event for the Herbert Trophy immediately after the AGM. The proximity of players to each other during ‘face to face’ bridge raises some health and safety concerns at the present time, and therefore the Management Committee reluctantly took the decision not to hold the competition, at least for the time being. Similarly, the usual presentation of trophies will not take place during the AGM. Contact will be made with the current holders of trophies to arrange for their return. Arrangements will then be made to have the trophies suitably inscribed prior to their presentation later in the year. If you require any further information regarding the AGM, please do not hesitate to contact either the Chairman or the Secretary via the addresses on the LCBA website.

Warmest greetings from the volunteer bridge players who run the Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association! We hope very much that you are well and also able to enjoy bridge, whether it is playing online, reading books and articles or discussions to improve partnership understandings. Very many bridge players all over Lincolnshire, indeed the country, miss the enjoyment of playing Bridge in person.  Because of Coronavirus,  a new term emerged for how we played our much-loved game, Face-to-Face bridge, often shortened to F2F bridge. ..........

The Northern Counties Bridge League involves 6 teams: Yorkshire (1 and 2), Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire, and Lincolnshire. It takes place on 4 Saturdays about a month apart, on the RealBridge platform. The 10th July was the first round. Each team plays all the others in 8 board matches.
The Lincs first round team was:
Ron Wall and Brian Smith
Wain and Peter Coles
Andy Lewis and Roy Brixton
Kiat Huang and Aaron Hutton
Thanks to all who took part, in particular the last-minute substitutes. It is a tough league and attracts a number of the best players in the North of England. Ron and Brian, and Kiat and Aaron managed positive cross IMPs scores, which is a good result, but did not prevent Lincs being placed at the bottom of the league table. Full results are at:

Thanks to all involved in this match and throughout the whole MCOL season. Due to a stomach bug I was feeling very fragile yesterday, so special thanks to Chris for playing as super-sub at very short notice with a partner he has never met and only 5 minutes system discussion on the phone before the game. Also thanks need to go to the Staffs and Shropshire team who gave considerable help with match setup and were very friendly throughout. ..........

Thanks to all those players who entered the event. Results can be seen HERE. We shall now take a break from the league and perhaps consider re-starting again in the Autumn.
