Information Technology |
You can run a duplicate bridge club using pen and paper to score and publish results. Computers are not compulsory!
However, there are many tasks that are much easier, and the players can enjoy their bridge even more using the amazing potential of club computers or the internet.
The technology does need certain knowledge to use it succesfully, and there are bewildering choices to be made.
We provide here, in good faith, hoping to help you, information and ideas we have used ourselves or come accross.
We are also willing to try and help with specific questions or problems, so please put them to us here.

Card Dealing Machine |
Here is a link to a short video of a dealing machine in action. We have picked the model that is most like the one we use ourselves for our Rugby based bridge club. We also deal cards as a service for two other bridge clubs. The machine is linked to a computer (not visible). The computer can be instructed to provide either a random deal, typically for competitions, or to deal from an existing file, typically deals that suit the topic in a lesson or practice.

ScoreBridge and Windows 10 E-Mail Client |
Scorebridge is an excellent scoring program ("top coat") that can collect the results from a session, work out who won and what their overall score was, and help to publish the results.
Windows 10 is the latest version of the "undercoat" that you need on a computer or tablet that runs Microsoft programs. Moving from an older version of Windows to Windows is currently being offered to PC users free, so many of us are considering it, or have done it.
Scorebridge works fine with Windows 10 with one small exception. You can use Scorebridge to automatically create and send e-mails to all the players at a session. Scorebridge works with another "top coat" program that sends e-mails. There are many different e-mail programs. Microsoft provide a new one with Windows 10; it's just called "Mail". At present, Scorebridge does not work with this particular new e-mail program. The developer of Scorebridge knows about his, and it's in his work queue. In the meantime, you can download an older e-mail program called Windows Live Mail, and this will work fine with Scorebridge and Windows 10.
