Vail Bridge Club players to represent the USA at world event in Berlin.
Bill Multack, Sherry Fardie and Jerry Lesnick are Vail residents who frequently play at the Vail Valley Bridge Club, directed by Marcia and Tom McCalden. They will shortly be leaving the valley enroute to Berlin, Germany to represent the USA in the Masters Bridge Competition in the 2015 Maccabi Games.
The Maccabi Games is the second largest athletic event-- second only to the Olympics. Originally created in 1932 in Tel Aviv (not yet Israel) as a showcase for Jewish athletes, the competition is held in Israel every four years, and elsewhere in between. Thirty eight countries will be represented this year with over 2,000 Jewish athletes, almost 200 from the United States. The Bridge team is limited to six players. Bill, Sherry and Jerry came together a year ago at the Vail Bridge Club when the invitation came to each of them to join the USA team at this year's Maccabi game.
On the evening of July 28 they will be marching into the stadium that Hitler built for the 1936 Olympics in which Jews were not allowed to participate. The opening ceremony will be streamed live, and may be watched on Time-Warner channel 469 or Direct TV channel 366. The ceremony is at 8:30 PM Berlin time, which is 12:30 PM Mountain time.
We wish our bridge ambassadors well and are proud that the Vail Valley bridge community has achieved such international recognition.
