All matches now played, congratulations to Bill and his team, Beryl, Michael and Clive, Full results are shown on the linked results page.  Bill's team, with the same players, won the first SBC handicapped on line league that was played in summer 2020, very well done.

Much thanks are due to Terry for the effort put into calculating the handicaps, the closeness of the results shows how well he has done that, and to Carol for her organisation of the teams.

A 9 high event Swiss Teams competition took place on Saturday 27th March, with 54 teams from 11 counties playing on Realbridge  Three teams from SSCBA, including one from SBC, entered.  This followed the huge success (over 45 teams) of the Midland Counties No Fear "8 high" Swiss Teams competition also on Realbridge that was held on Saturday January 30th.  These very enjoyable events are a new venture for the Midland Counties group. In the past the Dawes inter county matches have been the inter county competition which have involved travelling long distances. It is hoped that these popular online events will become a long term fixture on the calendar.

Thanks are due to Terry and Carol for sounding out the Monday players to ensure the general wish to participate (and of course happy to pay the £2.90 entry fee) and then organising the smooth entry into the event.  Thanks also due to BCL and the EBU for making it possible.

Nine teams took part in the handicapped league playing a match a week at an agreed time with opposing team, a home and an away match against each of the other teams, each team having 2 weeks off

Handicap difference for 16 boards is 37, which equates to 2.3 per board. Therefore handicap difference for 15 boards is 34.7 VP Scale win by 1 is 10.31VP & by 0 is 10.0VP  Difference .31 & .7 of this is .22, so 10.31 is reduced to 10.22

Wk3* 15 boards match so handicap and VP scale adjusted accordingly. Handicap difference for 16 boards is 12, which equates to .75 per board. Therefore handicap difference for 15 boards is 11.25. VP Scale win by 6 is 11.76VP & by 5 is 11.48VP Difference .28 & .25 of this is .07, so 11.76 is reduced to 11.69

SBC took part in the ECATS Children in Need Sim Pairs events on the Friday 6th November and 9th November 2020 Virtual Club sessions.    There is information regarding how to send donations whether or not you took part in either of the SBC virtual club events on the ECATS page. Adrienne has also offered to forward any BACs payments to the club marked CiN to ECATS.  It is hoped that players will make generous donations to this cause at this difficult time, normally your usual table money plus donations made at the real world sessions would have been sent by Adrienne to ECATS. The club sent a record £361.52 in 2018, the target to beat this year by a country mile. The Teams of Four was played Thursday 27th February 2020. A couple of glitches along the way but luckily David always comes prepared for all eventualities!  While expecting the easy 7 team movement in the end, due to illness, it was actually the more messy 6 team movement (messy only in that team 6 has to share boards throughout, each time with a different table).  David promptly initiated plan B so play was easily completed by 10:30 but then the computer threw a wobbly!  However all was resolved, see results, with winners Paul, Linda, Derrick and Glyn (a one time regular Shelley team) from a very close second  Anne, Geoff D, Geoffrey N and John ( a current Shelley team) with John and Ann W, Liz and Pat M (Shelley stand by players) further down the field in third place.  Congratulations all and many thanks to David for directing, and fielding the last minuite change in team numbers so well.

SSCBA sim Pairs - Played Monday 27th January 

Stafford Bridge Club Monday afternoon players entered the Staffs and Shops winter sim pairs event together with 5 other clubs this year.  This ran alongside the regular Dash ladder competition at Stafford.  Results from all 6 clubs now in and Paul and Linda not only top at Stafford but overall winners of the event see Winter Sims.   Second at Stafford were Robin and Mike coming third overall in a very tightly contested place, 8th at Stafford were Antony and Carol who came 10th overall with several SSCBA "tops",  3rd at Stafford Mike W and Ruth were 29th overall such are the quirks of sim pairs scoring out of 78 pairs! Well done all and many thanks for scoring and directing, David

There is an overall county prize and a prize for the winner at each club that enters.

Ladies' Pairs - Played Monday 2nd December.

A break with tradition, the Men's and Ladies' pairs were not played at the same session this year.  David rirected and reports "We had 8 full tables this afternoon and so I was able to run a straight 8 table Mitchell movement with all 7 ladies pairs sitting EW ie only one "odd" pair EW as well. So reasonably balanced. 1st Ann Stevenson & Beryl, 2nd Deirdre & Shirley, 3rd Pat & Janet.  Many thanks to David for directing and Terry for scoring.
 

Men's Pairs - Played Thursday 28th November 2019

Arthur Bloxham Trophy - Played Wednesday 20th November 2019

Ihe Arthur Bloxham trophy, previously the restricted pairs, was played on 20th November. David was the non-playing director and photographer, while Terry did the scoring - many thanks to both.  David reports "Before play I welcomed back Gina Foster (to the delight of all the Wednesday players), and overall the event went well. Towards the end it became apparent that the final result would be very close at the top. Thus I took photos of the three possible winning pairs (just in case!) but once all the scores were in the current holders Liz & Penny, retained the trophy on 58.75% with Linda and Paul a very close second (58.33%) and Graham & Sean not far behind in third place (57.92%)".  In fact the the gap between each of the first 4 places was only 3 match points (141 down to 138)! Children in Need - Friday 8th, Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th November 2019

The club entered this event at three of the regular sessions this year.  Friday got the sessions off to a good start with donations/raffle/bring and buy/plants/cakes etc coming to £103.20 plus Terry's generous donation of £19 (to enter the event) making a total of £122.20 for Children in Need. On Friday top at Stafford were Paul and Linda who came 35th overall out of 909 pairs at 53 clubs in 2 counties.  On Tuesday top at Stafford were Rachael & Alan 67th overall out of 1803 pairs playing at 117 clubs in 3 countries (as at 10 a.m. 13/11/19).  On Wednesday top at Stafford were  Adrienne & Harry coming 285th overall out of 1975  pairs at 117 clubs in 3 countries (as at 1 p.m. 21/11/2019).

Adrienne sent off a total of £262.40 and has received this message of thanks from ECATs

“What a great total for this year – you will thank all your members for me won’t you ? tell them I think they are wonderful. As are you and the committee for all the work you do getting it together and doing the organisation. Trust me you are appreciated !! With best regards, Anna”   (The total raised in 2019 by all clubs and donations came to £39,941.76 as at 24/11/19, since 2002 just over £1m raised by sim pairs bridge players for Children in Need.)

Bryan Baker Handicapped Pairs Competition - Played 1st November 2019

With 9 full tables and the holders from 2018 present, club captain Terry, decided to hold the Bryan Baker handicapped pairs competition.  This competition was going to alternate with the Monday session but from 2019 the Monday session is now running the Dash ladder so, also from 2019, the Bryan Baker will be played at a Friday evening session every year.  To win the prize only regular Friday night players (those who have played at least 20 times on a Friday over the last 12 months)) are eligible but anyone, visitors or players from other SBC sessions, may take part.

When the handicapping system, based on NGS ratings, and eligibility taken into account the winners were Ernie & Sandra,  64.43% (60.42 + 4.01) with Jane & Simon 2nd 60.38% (63.10 - 2.72) and Phil and Helena 3rd 56.33% (53.57 + 2.76).  The full results will be on the club notice board.  Well done all, great to have such a good turn out and members were pleased to welcome two visitors to their first Friday night session.  Thank you Terry for organising the event.

Ernie writes "Bryan was a Past Captain at Brocton Golf Club. He was very good friend of mine and I attended Albion Football matches with him". Wonderful that the 2019 winners of the trophy knew Bryan Baker personally.

Club Pairs - Played Thursday 24th October

The club pairs were won by Peter & Dave with second placed pair Anne & Geoff and third Pat A & Michael S.  Thanks to Terry for scoring and directing.

Following the success of the Summer Pairs events at Stafford the club entered the Autumn events on  Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th October.  The Monday event was two competitions in one as the scores were included in the new Dash Ladder too!!!  Jim and Sheila came top at Stafford on Monday and as at 9th October were 35 out of 531 pairs taking part at 35 clubs.  Glyn and Derrick joint top at Stafford were 36 out of 585 overall at 41 clubs, Rachael and Alan who tied at the top at Stafford came 169 overall such are the quirks with sim pairs!  These are not likely to be the final overall results as they come in over a few days.  Next sim pairs events will be the Children in Need on Friday 8th, Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th November.

Seven and a half tables for this at Stafford, 26 tables overall. Winners at Stafford were Geoff and Anne (third overall) with John and Geoffrey second (fourth overall) and Ivor an Pat third (tenth overall).  Paul gets a gold star for his lessons, one of his pupils came in fifth at Stafford!  See SSCBA results page for overall positions.

Two more sim pairs events were played on Monday 22nd July and Tuesday 23rd July sessions.  As at 7:15 p.m. 24/07/19 first placed Stafford players in the overall competitions were Sylvia and Bill on Monday coming 16th nationally with 70 clubs taking part and 1148 pairs,  and Mike and Steve on Tuesday coming 1st nationally with 49 clubs, 773 pairs scored so far (as of Saturday 27th Mike and Steve now 2nd nationally by .02%  after 51 clubs with 795 pairs recorded).  As of 8/8/19 52 clubs results for 814 pairs  now in for Tuesday and Mike and Steve now third nationally, Sylvia and Bill remain 16th nationally for Monday after 71 clubs have sent results in for 1159 pairs.

SSCBA No Fear Pairs played at Wolverhampton on 21st February 2019

Robin's class at Stafford was well represented at this event in 2019 with five out to the 12 SBC players taking part on Thursday 21st February. Two others who used to play on Friday evenings also played coming 2nd EW.  Best placed was Friday morning pupil, Carl, from Paul and Terry's group coming 2nd NS but won a prize for best placed runner up with 58.14%.  Carl was playing with ex-teacher Ann who took the beginner's class at Stafford in the Autumn.

The Mixed Pairs club championship was played with a double hesitation Mitchell movement on Thursday 28th March, the winners were Beryl & Michael with Linda & Paul second and Deirdre & Michael third. Congratulations all. Thanks to Terry for directing and David for scoring.  Apologies from the webmaster who perhaps did not sufficiently highlight the competition and the need to sign up in advance - will try to do better next time!

The 2018/19 Shelley Final Results

Final round played Thursday April 11th. Click here for the scratch results of Round 1 played 11th October,  Round 2 played 8th November, Round 3 played on Thursday 13th December,  Round 4 played Thursday 10th January,  Round 5 played Thursday 14th February, Round 6 played Thursday 14th March and Round 7 played Thursday 11th April.  The final accumulated results including handicaps for rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7  are:  1. Davies (291),  2. Seymore (83), 3. Eaves (59), 4. Drinkwater (-22), 5. Maltby (-28), 6. Clarke (-79),  7. Sleightholme (-87),  8. Metcalf (-97)  9. Hensby (-120).  Despite a brilliant performance by the Drinkwater team in Round 7 the Davies team (Geoff Davies, Graham Link, Roger Keane & Paul Cutler) were still way ahead of the rest of the field in the overall result such was their lead by the end of Round 6.  3 members of this Shelley team are in the team presently at the top of the County League division 1.  Many thanks to David for directing and taking the picture and for Terry for all the hard work organising.

A good turn out, 9 tables at Stafford.  Unfortunately an error came to light afterwards, which made minor differences to the percentages, originally a tie for third place now separated out into third and fourth.  After the correction to board 3 the winners at Stafford were Ivor & Liz, second John & Ann with third Terry & Gordon.  The final results have now been posted on the County website, the overall winners played at Chasetown with the second pair at Oswestry and Liz & Ivor third see SSCBA overall results for all thirty five tables. The camera woman too slow to catch the SBC winners at the time with her "point and click" camera, a lucky mistake as a good picture now taken by another!

The scorer achieved an interesting movement that caused some confusion, somehow requested round 2 as the arrow switch round instead of arrow switching for the last 2 rounds! 

The winners were Alan & Dave A both before and after the handicap applied (total 71.23%) seen here under the Dash Trophy Board, with Dave R & Peter 2nd (58.77%) and Ivor & Robin 3rd (50.95%).  Thanks are due to Terry for the event running so smoothly. Readers might like to read something of Hugo Dash who presented the trophy to the club way back when........ 

Bryan Baker - played Friday 30th November

It was decided at a recent meeting to hold the Bryan Baker handicapped pairs event on an ad hoc basis alternating between a Monday afternoon one year and a Friday evening the next.  For 2018 it was to be on a Friday and it was finally played with a double hesitation Mitchell movement on Friday 30th November 2018 and the winners, after the handicap applied, were Ros & Clair, lovely to have new names on the trophy board. Second were Duncan & Margaret and third Frank & Sandy.  Many thanks to Terry for the effort of having the handicaps ready prepared for the last several Fridays.

Men's and Ladies' Pairs  - played Thursday 29th November

Eventually the two competitions were amalgamated into one single double hesitation movement.  Anne & Kath  retained their 2017 title in the ladies' group with Deirdre & Shirley second and Rose & Ann third.  Between the top three men's pairs there was less than 1.5% with Ivor & Mike winners by a short head from Peter & Dave just ahead of John & Geoffrey.  Many thanks are due to David for running the event as the non-playing director, scorer and cameraman.  The chaps were all so quickly away at the end, indeed before the final scores were in, that no picture was taken of them. David had to spend happy hours with photoshop to get the picture!!!

New captain, Terry, is promoting more competitions at the club, particularly Sim Pairs. The Bill Hughes event started as a small Simultaneous pairs between three Merseyside clubs. It has grown a lot, but it tries to be the cheapest international Simultaneous Pairs, despite giving out 50% of the entry as prizes and trophies. While this event is primarily played on the last Tuesday in June not all clubs meet on Tuesday so they may play later in the week   6 full tables at Stafford for the event - well done Terry. The full results for this event, ECats session 4566, will not be available until after 10 p.m. on Friday when all participating clubs will have completed but the basic results can be seen here as they come in.

Twelve Stafford members, with mixed success, took part in the leagues during the 2017/18 season, six in division 1 and six in division 2.   The final division 1 result only came in on May 17th!  Congratulations to Geoff, who played in second placed Roger Keane's team along with Paul Cutler and David Beavon all of whom took part in the Shelley at Stafford during 2017/18.  In the second division the Sleightholme team squeezed into 2nd place by just one point and thus gain promotion to the first division.  The SSCBA League Results are also shown on the EBU site.

A very successful event, 7 tables, with the new club captain, Terry, in charge.  The winners were Graham & Geoff, Pam & Mike came second with Pat & Steve third.  Congratulations all, not least to Terry for all the organisation both beforehand and on the night. To give all members an opportunity to take part SBC, new Captain Terry entered the club in to 3 separate events, each with a commentary.  On the Tuesday and Wednesday all the table money was given to the charity.  On the Friday players were invited to make individual donations and raised £106.60 which was added to the donated entry money of £19.00 and money raised at Friday morning lessons to a total of £136.60, Tuesday raised £120 and Wednesday £104.92 making a grand total of £361.52 which was sent off to ECATS 15/11/18 by Adrienne - profuse thanks received from the organisers.  If you wish to look at the full results click here and then select the day, Friday, Tuesday or Wednesday, with options on the right hand side for overall, zonal, national or club listings.  With sim pairs the ranking order overall may not be the same as for the Stafford session and the results can arrive at ECATS some time after the event so will continue to change until all partaking clubs have sent in their results.  Best placed overall from Stafford were Friday players, Dave and Lesley, coming 26th but 5th in Stafford on the night!  Jane and Simon first on the same night at Stafford came 38th overall (as at 16/11/18).  Nicky and Eleanor, second at Stafford on Friday, were the only others from Stafford being placed in the first hundred of their event.

Wednesday players were canvassed on July 4th when they voted in favour of taking part in this SSCBA event. 8 tables eventually played at Stafford with Ivor & Michael being the heat winners (4th overall). Gina & Wendy came second at Stafford (11th overall) and Beryl & Terry third (23rd overall).  Many thanks to Terry, who acted as both director and scorer, for the session which ran like clockwork.  The full results are available on the County website where the results have now all been combined, the combining process changes the order as compared with the Stafford results, a quirk of sim pair events!  A total of 38½ tables participated at 5 clubs, Eccleshall, Newcastle, Stafford, Wolverhampton and Wrekin.

SSCBA Mixed Pairs - Played on Thursday 14th June at Wolverhampton 

Very good to see 4 Stafford pairs taking part in this event.  The winners being Stafford members Kath Adams & John Hartley. A most enjoyable all play all event.

The competition was played on 15th February 2018. 8 teams, something of a director's nightmare!  David put a lot of preparation in to make sure the 8 team movement ran smoothly and had time to take the pictures at the end!  Winners Beryl & Michael M, Deirdre & Michael S, second Ivor & Pat, David & Janet and third John & Ann, Clare & Liz.

The winter annual event was played on a Monday this time,  Monday 29th January

The winners at Stafford were Joy and Malcolm with Terry & Garry coming second and Pat Martin & Shirley Elphick third. Unfortunately board 4 was mis-boarded after round 3 so both the Stafford and the SSCBA combined results for 37½ tables, have made adjustment for this. Joy & Malcolm have come 2nd overall, many congratulations.  Ann apologies for getting the PC and tablets confused amongst themselves during the session, luckily there is nothing the matter with the tablet's memory!   Pam & Rachael playing at Chasetown were 3rd overall.  The commentaries and hands are now available at the club and the hands also shown alongside the results.

The Dash Trophy competition was played Thursday 18th January 2018. Despite the 'flu keeping some away there were 9 tables for this handicap pairs competition.  After the application of the handicaps the winners were Mike & Robin with Beryl & Michael 2nd and Glyn and Derrick 3rd.  Picture courtesy of Eleanor.

 Ladies' and Men's Pairs - Thursday November 16th

Apologies for the delay.  The results are finally confirmed as:

	Ladies' Pairs were won by Anne Seymore & Kath Adams with Pat Andrews & Pam Ewan in second place and Janet Drinkwater & Adrienne Jones third.  5½ tables this year.
	After a recount (the tablets had a bad night on the 16th) the Men's Pairs were won by Steve Walton & David Alderson just a whisker ahead of Michael Metcalf & Michael Seavers who were a short head in front of Derrick Balsom & Glyn Pugh.  Michael Metcalf oversaw the recount that sadly displaced him from first place. As with the Ladies' Pairs 5½ tables.

Children in Need Sim Pairs - Tuesday 14th November and Wednesday November 15th This year the club took part in the Sim Pairs at both the Tuesday evening session and the Wednesday afternoon session thus allowing most club members the chance to enter.  Adrienne has sent off the cheque for a record £325.25 today (21/11/17) after contributions from the lessons added to the £288 collected at the Tuesday and Wednesday actual Sim Pairs sessions.  Anna Gudge, the organiser of the sim pairs, has asked Adrienne to pass on her thanks, "we think they are wonderful, big hugs all round".

Towards the end of the session, three pairs were in serious contention for winning the trophy. Anthea and Eileen were leading and then into the penultimate round Pat & Carys had a good percentage lead and photographer even tipped off Pat to be available for the photo shoot. Then came the final three boards to see Anthea & Eileen finish third Pat & Carys second and the winners (who in fact had been lying second for much of the afternoon) were Adrienne & Harry on 66.67%.

The Shelley - Round 3 - Thursday 14th December

All 9 teams turned out despite the icy road conditions for Round 3 that was played on Thursday, 14th December. The Shelley - Round 2 - Thursday 9th November

The Shelley - Round 1 on Thursday 12th October 6:45 for 7 p.m.

Nine teams of four took part in the opening round of the Shelley competition played Thursday 12th October.  There were several spectacular slam hands.  The results from the first round were (18.10.17) confirmed as being (raw, handicap, combined): 1.Eaves (21, 0, 21), 2. Summer Cup - Played 14.09.17

As there were an odd number of complete tables, thus an easy movement, on Thursday 14th the decision was made to play the competition.  A fair few of past and present committee members were there to agree to this on the spot decision.  The results were:

9 tables took part in this event at Stafford (Ed thinks more tables than at any of the other clubs taking part).  Many thanks are due to David for ensuring that the event ran smoothly not only by dealing the cards beforehand but also directing and scoring on the night.  Such is the scoring system that when the results are combined with those from other clubs the order of pairs may be changed from that at their local club. This year the winners at each location get a prize in addition to the overall winners, 1st at Stafford were Geoff and Graham, 2nd Deirdre & Michael and 3rd Rachael and Alan.  It was good to see so many of Robin's class taking part and others who are not regular Tuesday evening players.

The President's Cup was played Sunday March 12th.  12 players on each team. The Captain's team were the victors by quite a few imps.  Pat and Liz laid on a wonderful tea, many thanks. A very enjoyable stress free afternoon with some interesting hands thrown in.  After Thursday's excitement with the tablets it was back to scoring by hand - movement would have taken a while to set up on the tablets but maybe next year.......... 

Congratulations Liz, Adrienne and Harry. In 2016 the top Local Master Point scorers in the club, as recorded by the EBU,were Liz (1150), Adrienne and Harry (1090). The EBU year runs Jan-Dec the SBC year runs Apr-Mar so there will be differences.

In the event 7 teams took part, the eighth team was unable to play due to a tree blown down by storm Doris.  The results of the first 3 were very close being:

Pat and Michael, top at Stafford, have finally, now that all the results are in, come top overall out of 62 pairs, congratulations both, see the County site for the combined results. It has been nip and tuck with a pair from Oswestry originally showing as top and, as more results came in, Pat and Michael finally pipped them to the winners spot.  A commentary on the hands was available.  Stafford is indebted to John Withers for dealing the cards while Stafford Duplimate machine being serviced.

Stafford entered 6½ tables in the Children in Need sim pairs on Tuesday,  November 15th.  The overall results and individual placings. Always interesting to see how the relative positions of club members change when the scores combined with others.  The final total raised by SBC was £182, many thanks to all who contributed to this

Round 7 was played Thursday 13th April.  Unfortunately a player had to pull out at the very last minute so team 1 missing caused the director to scratch his head a bit!   The results after round 7 played Thursday 13h April including the handicaps were: 1. There had been some questioning of the decision to stage the Summer Cup on an ad hoc basis when suitable numbers were present on a Thursday evening in recent years. After discussion at a recent committee meeting, it was decided to continue with the ad hoc basis. The Summer Cup was eventually played on Thursday 8th September there being exactly seven tables. Teams were selected by lot. The winners were David & Janet playing with Geoff & Graham, second David A & Margaret playing with Glyn & Derrick and third Anne & John Seymour playing with Liz & Michael S. A most enjoyable evening and congratulations to the winners.

Mixed Pairs

The mixed pairs were played on Thursday 24th March with 11 pairs including a visiting pair.  The results were first Michael and Deirdre, second Robin and Ann and third Pat and Ivor. The visitors actually had the second highest score but, as visitors, were not placed in the event.

President's Cup

The annual match between the President's team and the Captain's team was played Sunday 20th March. Despite some nasty 'flu about there were 16 players in each team. The winners were Captain's team, Mike Sherriff, Pam Allen, Michael Metcalf, David Alderson, Janet Woodward Shirley Elphick, Rachael & Alan Ashmore, Leila Paull, Tony Ashley, Helen & Phil Thompson, Sheila & Jim Palmer, Sandra & Ernie Houghton.  A most enjoyable tea to complete the afternoon was organised by Pat.

County Sim Pairs

The County Sim Pairs were played on Tuesday 26th January at 6 clubs including Stafford, a total of 37½ tables, 6½ from Stafford.  The winners were Ruth Timmins & Ron Stevenson playing at Eccleshall. Runners up were Geoff Davies & Paul Cutler playing at Stafford.  Second placed in Stafford were Adrienne & Harry, they came 9th overall after the scoring was completed and verified.

Dash Trophy - Played Thursday 21st January

Handicapped pairs competition. First Micheal Seavers & Pat Martin, second Ivor & Liz, third Rachael & Pam Allen, fourth Rose & Ann and fifth Dave & Peter. Sixteen pairs took part this year. Apologies to all for the delay in  publishing the result, a slight technical hitch!  Many congratulations to Michael and Pat, they are not a regular partnership.  Pat on great form, she went on to win EW on Friday too with a player she has never partnered before!

Children in Need Sim Pairs - November 10th

Stafford entered in the Children in Need Sim Pairs on Tuesday 10th November. Nationally the best pairs at Stafford were both EW pairs, Mike Sherrff & Ivor Clarke and Deirdre Newsome & Michael Seavers: sadly not "Top of the leader board", at the time of writing 18:41, 15/11/2015, overall 32nd and 44th respectively out of 2069 pairs, results probably final.  £139.80 was raised on the night at the club for Children in Need

Arthur Bloxham Trophy - November 11th Congratulations to Sylvia Hilton & Pauline Goggin, winners of The Arthur Bloxham Trophy with 2nd Anne Smith & Sam Holden and 3rd Joyce & Tony Brew. Bill Chester & Alan Westwood, not being regular Wednesday afternoon players were not eligible to be placed in this competition.

The first round of the Shelley handicapped teams competition got off to an excellent start on 8th October with 10 teams this year.  Ten teams gave David something of a director's nightmare but with some careful planning all went very smoothly (movements for 9 or 11 teams are much easier!).  Round 1 results, raw, handicap and combined figures are 1st Whiteman (25, 34, 59), 2nd Laughlin (55, -15, 40), 3rd Drinkwater (47, -27, 20), 4th Ullmer (-23, +28, +5), 5th Clarke (29, -35, -6), 6th,Metcalf (-12, 6, -6), 7th Pitt (-56, +45, -11), 8th Sleightholme (-47, +21, -26), 9th Eaves (-37, -2, -39), 10th Davies (19, -62, -43).  The handicap totals -7 so the results will will be "out" each month by -7.

The match was well supported with 8 pairs from each Club, it was a most enjoyable event with a delicious buffet. The result was a clear victory for Stone!!!

Children in Need - Tuesday 11th November

A thank you to those who took part in this nation wide and beyond sim pairs event. The top Stafford pair were Paul and Linda who came 43rd out of 2019 pairs. There were some challenging hands and an interesting booklet giving much food for thought.  £203 was raised for Children in need on the night and subsequent donations at other sessions.

Arthur Bloxham Trophy -  Played Wednesday 5th November: AMENDMENT 16 pairs took part in the Wednesday afternoon competition for the Arthur Bloxham Trophy. The results have now been corrected - with apologies - and the winners are Audrey Ratcliffe & Anthea Dean with 64.58%, 2nd Ghayur & Pauline and 3rd Adrienne & Harry. Well done all.

The results following the first round of the Shelley with the inclusion of the handicaps are: Sleightholme (84), Lord (19), Davies (2), Clarke (-5), Ullmer (-9), Drinkwater (-14), Eaves (-15), Laughlin(-31) and Metcalf (-44). The handicaps are such that the scores for each month total -13 after inclusion of the handicap.

Bryan Baker Competition - Sunday 14th September at 2 p.m.

After handicapping taken into account the winners were Ernie and Ghayur (56.17), second Rachael & Alan (54.85) with Leila & Christine (53.04) third and Ivor & Liz (52.83) fourth.   Great tea laid on by Sylvia and her team!  A fun afternoon at the club while "Bargain Hunt" was filmed outside!

Summer Cup

As last year this event was played on the spur of the moment on Tuesday 19th August when there were 7 tables. It is a handicapped event so it was decided that the pairs sitting at the tables would become a team.  The results were:

The winners for the 2013/14 Shelley competition were Team Davies (+144), second Team Sleightholme (+94), third Whiteman (+42), then teams Clarke (+12), Drinkwater (-10), Ullmer (-27), Eaves (-45), Laughlin (-70), Metcalf (-167). Many congratulations to Team Davies who won this handicapped event by a country mile despite their very large negative handicap

A perfect number, 32, took part in the event this year making 4 teams for the Captain and 4 for the President. Each of the 4 teams played each of the opposing 4 teams, 6 boards per match. Players of all abilities and from all sessions at the club took part. A good fun event with a great afternoon tea thrown in! This is a handicap event and after applying the handicap the results were: 1st - Dave Rowley & Peter Collier (63.17%), 2nd - Beryl & Michael (57.83%), 3rd - Paul Laughlin & Anne Hidderley (51.83%) by a whisker (0.08%) from Pam Allen & Rachael Ashmore (51.75%). Congratulations to you all.

Another success story for Geoff, this time playing with Rod, at the Summer teams event at Wolverhampton with a score of 155 VPs well ahead of the second placed team.

Following the lack of entries for the official Summer Cup event earlier in June an impromptu decision was taken on Thursday 27th June to play the event then and there as there were 5 full tables on the night. Apologies to anyone who had signed up for the official event and were not offered the chance to play on the day.

Ladies' and Men's Pairs - Thursday 22nd November

No new names on the trophy boards this year! Margaret Dash and Janet Drinkwater, who won a few years back, were well ahead of the rest of the field in the Ladies' Pairs . Pat and Ann were second with Sylvia and Helen third. Geoff and Robin retained their title in the Men's Pairs with a slightly reduced lead as compared to last year. Second place was very keenly contested with Glyn and Derrick (2010 winners) on 55.56% and Dave and Peter on 55.09%. Congratulations all. Board 24 was interesting - Ed, sitting North, scored a bottom on this one, EW bid and made 6H!

Children in Need  - Tuesday November 13th 2012

Many thanks to all who supported this event and to Wednesday and Thursday players and A.N. Other who brought the total to match last year's £196 to send to the charity.  Our best placed pair came 64th out of 2063 pairs playing in 117 clubs over 4 Countries when last checked with ECATS.

Arthur Bloxham Trophy - November 7th The winners of this competition, restricted to regular Wednesday afternoon players, were Pat and Agnes.  Many congratulations to you both.  Pat and Agnes are very frequent Monday and Wednesday afternoon players, they hardly ever miss a session.   A very well desrved win and two new names for the trophy board.  2nd were Margaret and Joan with Liz and Beth 3rd.  Sadly Z was not able to play and Pauline's "stand-in" partner had not attended the qualifying 20 times on a Wednesday.

Shelley Round 1 - October 18th

The competition got off to a good start on October 18th with a record 11 teams thanks to Mike's organisation beforehand and David's directing on the night. The movement was quite complicated to accommodate some 2 and some 3 board contests! Provisional positions after the first round including handicapping are: Team 4, Goggin (+35), Team 6, Davies (+31), Team 8, Sleightholme (+24), Team 7, Laughlin (+21), Team 1, Drinkwater (+7), Team 9, Alderson (-1), Team 10, Ullmer (-3), Team 2, Whiteman (-17), Team 11, Metcalf (-20), Team 5, Eaves (-31) and Team 3, Elphick (-46). Next round Thursday November 8th.

The dates for the Shelley are the 3rd Thursday in October and February, none in December and the second Thursday in November, January, March and April - 6 Rounds. That is 18th October, 8th November, 10th January, February 21st, March 14th and April 11th.  This year there are 11 teams requiring each team to play 30 boards so an early start will be necessary.  The teams are (in no particular order!):

A most enjoyable afternoon took place at the club on Sunday 22nd July in the sun!!!! There was no problem at the gate, we were expected and able to park just outside the club in our usual spot. Olive had organised a wonderful spread for the players' afternoon tea. The final results were:
1st Pam Allen and Rachael 64.67%
2nd Sylvia Hilton & Michael Metcalf 56.94%
3rd Ann Stevenson & Paul 54.06%

Summer Cup - Results after Round 2

Please note that final round of this competition is now to be held on Thursday 6th September because of possible access problems at the end of August due to the Scope festival.

The Dash

The Dash is played over seven months on the third Thursday of the month with the same partner. The best five scores over the period are used to decide the winners. Thursday 19th April was the final round and the results are:

The Individual Trophy

The Individual Trophy, played on Wednesday 18th April, has been won by Mike Sherriff by a length from Robin Adey.  Behind Robin by just a short head was Michael Metcalf who in turn was only just ahead of John Whiteman.  Congratulations to you all.

Shelley Final Results

After 7 rounds and the handicaps taken into consideration the winning team was Team Sleightholme, second Team Metcalf and third Team Alderson.  Full results will be found on - Recent Competitions.  Thanks are due to David for keeping a cool head when last minute changes threatened the planned movement and to Mike for doing the scoring, often having to play detective with conflicting results and incomplete cards to work from!

The Mixed Pairs competition was played on March 22nd with the scores all being fairly closely grouped, in the range 50% plus or minus 6.7%.  The winners were Margaret Dash and David Alderson with Pam Alan and Derrick Balsom second.  Three pairs tied for third place!

The winners were Margaret Dash & David Alderson with runners up Linda & Paul Laughlin tying in second place with David and Janet Drinkwater.  Congratulations to you all.

Would board 2 be a good one for the Forum?  Most NS pairs made 6 Spades and only bid 2!  If EW had led hearts it would have been held to 5, nevertheless everyone missed game.  Board 10 had 5 EW, out of the 8, making 3H but one pair bid 4, were doubled and made 2 overtricks!

The results of the Teams of 4 competition on January 26th were 1st: Team Laughlin (by a country mile!), 2nd: Team Drinkwater, 3rd: Team Davies, 4th: Team Ulmer, 5th: Team Seavers, 6th: Team Alderson, 7th: Team Eaves and 8th: Team Sleightholme.  Many congratulations Paul, Linda, Derrick & Glyn.

As ever David rose to the occasion having to rearrange the movement from the simple 9 team to an awkward 8 team at the last minute and spent the hours before repreparing the movement cards. 

Eight pairs entered each of the Ladies' and Men's pairs events on Thursday, November 24th. 

The winning ladies were Pat Andrews and Pam Ewan with runners up Shirley Elphick and  Deirdre Newsome just ahead of Sylvia Ulmer and Ann Stevenson.

The winning men were Robin Adey and Geoff Davies with Ivor Clarke and Mike Sherriff  tying with David Alderson and Alan Ashmore in second place.
