Congratulations to Mike Nunn and Rita Evans who came 3rd and to Cyril Berkeley and Ron Gould who came 5th in the Jack High Swiss Pairs competition held as part of the EBU Year End Congress.

Congratulations to Sam Botfield and Ann Francis who came 2nd with 61.52% in the Berks and Bucks Tony Boothroyd Plate competition on 21st November.

Well done to the Reading A team in the Berks & Bucks league of 8  who have made a superb start to the new 2021-2022 season. They defeated reigning champions New Amersham by 13-7 VPs on Tuesday.  

Congratulations to Chris Hall and Giorgio Jeronimidis who finished top in the Reading heat and 5th overall in the EBED Autumns Sims held on 9th September. Carole Obray and Janet Rixon were the highest placed Reading pair overall, finishing 3rd.

Congratulations to the winners of our first set of RBC competitions in the online format, for the period February to August 2021.

The Brown Cup winner is Roger Donato with 61.66%, overtaking one of his regular partners, Ian Mackinder, on the very last evening session.

The Boucher Cup winner is Ann Francis with 58.45, a tiny 0.01% ahead of Giorgio Jeronimidis.

In the handicap Bilbey Cup Simon Fixter was the winner with Doug Baker second.

Eight teams contested the multiple teams event on 30th September competing for both the Bridge Plus and the Reading Spirit Handicap trophies. The event was an "all play all" teams event. Well done to the winning team of Stuart Townsend, Simon Roberts, Gordon Maxwell and Marc Rivoira with a score of +67 imps. However since not all are members of RBC they are not eligible to win the trophies.

Bridge Plus Cup

The winners of the Bridge Plus Cup are Pete Bamford, Jackie Paxford, Ken Jones and Nigel Cooper with a score of +48 imps ahead of Linsey Joyce, Christine Sanders, Gill Smith and Chris Cook on +20 imps.

Reading Spirit Handicap trophy

In the handicap competition each team is given a handicap based on the grading of the players in the team with an A team player receiving no handicap, a B team player +5, a regular Tuesday player +8 and all other players +10.

The winners of the Reading Spirit Handicap trophy are Pete Bamford, Jackie Paxford, Ken Jones and Nigel Cooper with a score of +88 imps (+48 on the night and a handicap of +40) ahead of Linsey Joyce, Christine Sanders, Gill Smith and Chris Cook on +60 imps (+20 on the night and a handicap of +40).

Congratulations to John Greenhalgh and Tony Parkinson who finished top in the Reading heat of the EBU summer sims held on 29th July.

Sadly we report the death of Martyn Jordan. Martyn passed away at home on Saturday evening, 26th June 2021. 

As a member, team player and director he contributed greatly to Reading BC. Martyn won the Bilbey Cup in 2006, 2008 and 2019 plus the Boucher Cup in 2010. Martyn was also a long term member, team captain and past chairman of Twyford BC. Martyn represented Berkshire against Buckinghamshire three times, coming 7th, 3rd and 2nd in the respective C team matches.

Originally from Kent, Martyn was educated at Walpole grammar school Ealing, the Royal College of Music (horn and piano), Imperial College London (mathematics) and Cambridge University (Trinity, computer science at the Cavendish Lab, at the time the only post graduate course in the UK). He had a long career in software development and consultancy. A  man of many parts, he was an accomplished campanologist. A keen golfer, past captain and trustee of Henley golf club. A Fabian and past chair of the local Labour party.

He is survived by Vicky, their daughters Helen and Sally and granddaughter Lauren.  There will be a small family funeral. 

He will be greatly missed.

Congratulations to the RBC members who shared first place in the Berks & Bucks Green Point Swiss teams  for the Richard Palmer trophy.

Pat Dowdeswell's team (Pat & David Beever, Mike Ribbins & Nigel Guthrie) tied in first place on VPs with Ed Scerri ( Ed & Gary Jones, Ian Reissman & Steve Eginton).

Pat's team lost the head to head minimatch but beat the Thornton and Lancaster teams that had each defeated Scerri early in the tournament.

Congratulations to Peter Jackson and Tony Parkinson for winning the Cocktail Pairs and to Marc Rivoira and Clair Sirkis, the leading mixed pair, who won the Founders trophy.

Congratulations to Gordon Maxwell, Marc Rivoira, Ilan Sirkis and Barry Read on winning the Swiss Teams event held by the Oxfordshire Bridge Association on 13th June.

Congratulations to Iain and Graham MacKenzie and John and Annette Chamberlain who won the Chiltern Bridge League Summer Teams Competition for teams of 4 held on 7th July.

RBC took part in the EBU Club Stratified Sims held on 11th March. Congratulations to Ann Francis and Sam Botfield who came top in the Reading session and to Kerry Gordon and Simon Fixter who finished top of the Reading pairs in the overall results.
