Oxford Bridge Club's Online Bridge Knockout tournament, to be played between November 2020 and July 2021. The winners will receive the Meltzer Trophy.

This is intended to be a fun competition. It's been adapted from the club's Rubber Bridge Knockout tournament and is being run on an experimental basis, to see what members think. Feedback on your experience is welcome.

Key features*:

  • open to all members
  • you arrange matches between yourselves, as soon as you know who your opponents are
  • play your matches by the dates shown in the draw
  • play in the Casual section of Bridge Base Online, using total points scoring
  • each match consists of 24 hands
  • use video conferencing during the match if you wish
  • pairs who lose their first match will be automatically entered into the Plate Competition

Click here to see instructions for setting up the match on BBO.

*some features have been amended for the Plate competition. See below for details.

Plate Competition

CLICK HERE FOR THE DRAW FOR THE PLATE COMPETITION

Following feedback we've changed the rules slightly for the Plate competition to help make it a bit more social, and we're now asking you to play only 20 boards

You can play your matches on either:

  • BBO, in the casual section, as detailed above, with or without video conferencing. This is free.
  • or RealBridge, in the RealBridge Lounge. This involves an additional fee.

RealBridge Lounge:

A slot in the EBU's RealBridge lounge can be booked via the MyEBU account of one of the players and costs £5.00 per match.

Or £6.00 per match via Adam Wiseberg Bridge (scroll down the home page for the RealBridge Lounge).

Playing tactics

Play as if you're playing a teams match. You need to score as many points as you can, so it's important to go for marginal games or slams, particularly when vulnerable. The boards aren't duplicated, so it involves a good deal of luck - if you get good hands and make the most of them, then you're very likely to win. Some more information on teams tactics can be found here

Competition Rules

OBC Online Bridge Knockout Competition

Trophy

This competition shall determine the Club Online Bridge Champions for the year and the winners of the Meltzer Trophy

Eligibility

Pairs of Full Members of OBC

Dates

Agreed by the competing pairs, within a timescale set by the Tournament Secretary. Pairs should make every effort to arrange a suitable date; it is not permissible to offer only daytime weekdays unless agreeable to both parties: i.e. players should recognise that participants may work and require a match during the evening or weekend. In the case of failure to agree a date, the Tournament Secretary shall arbitrate, awarding the match to the pair deemed not at fault. Late matches may incur a carry-forward penalty of minus 300 points for the offending pair

Boards

Each match will be 24 boards. Passed-out hands count towards the total number of boards

Entry fee

£5 per pair, to be paid before playing the first round. There is no additional fee to pay to Bridge Base Online

Draw

A draw shall be made to determine the order of play. The Chief Tournament Director or Tournament Secretary shall furnish all pairs with details of the draw and closing dates for each round at least three weeks before the date by which the first round is due to be complete. Where the number of teams entering is not 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc., byes shall be introduced in the first round only. Byes shall be spread through the draw; as far as possible, the same number in each half, each quarter, each eighth, etc. If 16 or more pairs enter for the competition, there will be a plate competition for those who lose their first match. The draw for the plate competition will follow the rules outlined above
