Monday Bridge Club – Club Competitions

Monday Bridge Club – Club Competitions

Throughout the year, Monday Bridge Club runs a range of friendly but meaningful competitions. Some are long-running trophies that reward consistency over time, while others are special one-off events that bring a slightly different atmosphere to an ordinary club evening. Together they add variety to the calendar, give members something extra to play for, and help create a sense of occasion at different points in the year.

🏆 Goblet

Annual individual trophy – based on personal performance across the year.

The Goblet is an individual competition that runs across the club year. Unlike an event focused on one fixed partnership, the Goblet tracks how each player performs personally over a series of designated sessions. In other words, it is your own results that matter, rather than the fortunes of any one regular partnership.

Its purpose is to recognise consistency, commitment and individual contribution over time. Because bridge at club level is often played with different partners from week to week, the Goblet provides a way of rewarding members who regularly put in strong performances across the season, regardless of who happens to be sitting next to them on a particular evening.

Each qualifying session adds to your overall standing, and by the end of the year the player with the best combined record is awarded the Goblet. It is therefore a lovely “player of the year” style competition, giving regular members an added interest across the season and encouraging steady good play rather than one-off success.

🌟 Who it’s for: any member who comes along regularly and would like their individual performance across the year to count towards a meaningful and friendly personal trophy.

🌍 Club Sim Pairs (Goblet Event)

Nationwide pairs event – the same hands played across multiple clubs.

The Club Sim Pairs is a special pairs event where Monday Bridge Club joins many other clubs around the country in playing the same set of boards on the same evening. Your results are then compared not only within our club, but across all participating clubs nationally.

This creates a slightly different feel from a normal club night. You are still playing in a friendly, familiar environment with the people you know, but at the same time you are effectively competing against a much wider field, which adds an extra sense of occasion and interest to the evening.

The hands are usually accompanied by expert commentary afterwards, which many players find especially enjoyable. It gives members the opportunity not only to compare their scores more widely, but also to look back at the boards and see how experts thought about the bidding and play.

As well as being a worthwhile event in its own right, the Club Sim Pairs can also count as a qualifying session for the Goblet, meaning that your performance contributes towards your individual standing over the year.

🌟 Who it’s for: anyone who enjoys a normal pairs evening but likes the added interest of seeing how they compare with players across the country.

🥇 Salver

Flagship pairs trophy – played on the first Monday of each month.

The Salver is our main pairs competition and is played on the first Monday of each month. Each of those sessions contributes to the overall Salver standings for the year, with the same partnership building up a record over time.

The purpose of the Salver is to reward partnership consistency. Whereas the Goblet focuses on the individual, the Salver is about how well two people function together as a pair. It recognises the value of partnership understanding, sound judgement, trust and the gradual development of a successful bridge partnership over the course of a season.

Because it is spread across the year rather than decided in a single evening, the Salver gives regular pairs something ongoing to aim for. It encourages continuity and adds extra interest to the monthly calendar, while still fitting naturally into the club’s normal rhythm of play.

At the end of the year, the pair with the best combined performance across all Salver evenings wins the trophy. It is one of the club’s most satisfying awards because success comes not from one hot night, but from repeatedly playing well together over time.

🌟 Who it’s for: established or aspiring partnerships who enjoy playing together regularly and would like their monthly results to count towards a year-long pairs trophy.

🎖️ Championship Pairs

Annual event – a special pairs competition to decide the club’s pairs champions.

The Championship Pairs is one of the club’s main showcase events of the year. It brings together regular and aspiring partnerships for a dedicated evening in which the Monday Bridge Club pairs championship is decided.

Although the atmosphere remains friendly and welcoming, there is usually a little extra edge to the occasion. Players know they are competing for a recognised club title, which gives the evening a distinct sense of purpose and makes it feel just that bit more special than an ordinary session.

It is also an enjoyable way of celebrating partnership bridge at its best, with pairs looking to combine solid system, sound judgement and good cooperation over the course of the event.

🌟 Who it’s for: players who enjoy a more competitive evening and would like the chance to become club pairs champions.

👥 Championship Teams

Annual event – teams of four players competing for the club teams championship.

The Championship Teams is run as a teams-of-four competition, with each team made up of two partnerships (four players in total). Over the course of the evening, teams play against one another to decide the Monday Bridge Club teams championship for that year.

The emphasis is still on friendly, good-spirited bridge, but there is an extra buzz in the room as scores add up and the leading team can change right up to the final round.

Teams bridge has a slightly different flavour from ordinary pairs, because success depends not just on your own table result but on how your teammates perform on the same boards. That shared element gives the evening a strong sense of teamwork and makes it a particularly enjoyable change of pace within the club calendar.

🌟 Who it’s for: players who enjoy team bridge and would like the chance to become club champions as part of a team of four.

💚 Mixed Pair

A man and a woman playing together as a partnership.

The Mixed Pair competition is for mixed partnerships – one man and one woman playing together as a pair. The format is a standard duplicate pairs session, but with separate recognition for the Mixed Pair winners.

It is always a pleasant and sociable event, offering members the chance to enjoy a slightly different kind of club evening while still competing for a recognised title.

For some pairs it is a long-established fixture, while for others it is simply a nice opportunity to team up in a different combination and take part in something a little special.

🌟 Who it’s for: any man–woman partnership, whether long-standing or newly formed, looking for a fun and slightly more special pairs night.

🎄 Individual

Played at the Christmas Party – relaxed, informal and very social.

Our Individual competition takes place during the Christmas Party and is designed to be one of the most sociable evenings of the year. Instead of staying with one partner for the whole session, you play with a variety of different partners, which is a great way to mix with other members and get to know different playing styles.

The bridge is deliberately more relaxed and informal than usual, with the emphasis very much on enjoyment, good company and a festive atmosphere. There are still winners, of course, but the evening is as much about the club getting together as it is about competition.

It is often one of the most enjoyable fixtures in the calendar because it brings members together in a way that a normal partnership event cannot.

🌟 Who it’s for: everyone – especially those who enjoy a light-hearted evening and the chance to play with lots of different people.

⚖️ Handicap

Results adjusted for strength of pair – EBU scores remain unchanged.

The Handicap competition is designed to make the game more inclusive and competitive for everyone, regardless of experience or playing strength. Results are adjusted to reflect the relative strength of each pair, helping to level the playing field.

In a normal duplicate session, more experienced pairs will often come out on top. The handicap system gives less experienced or improving pairs a realistic chance of finishing highly, rewarding good performance relative to their usual level rather than absolute results alone.

This makes the evening more engaging for a wider range of players and encourages steady improvement, as every pair has something meaningful to play for right up to the final round.

Importantly, the handicap adjustment applies only to the club competition. It does not affect your underlying EBU scores or your official NGS rating, which are recorded exactly as normal.

🌟 Who it’s for: all members – particularly newer or improving players who would like a fairer shot at the top places while still enjoying a standard duplicate session.
