Manchester vs Norway
The team of 12 match over 30 boards was successfully played 28/12. The teams were:
Norway:
Jan Mikkelsen - Arve Farstad
Erik Rynning - Øyvind Ludvigsen
Kåre Bogø - Ranja Sivertsvik
Torild Heskje - Gunn Tove Vist
Thor Erik Hoftaniska - Nicolai Heiberg-Evenstad
Tolle Stabell - Jon-Egil Furunes
Manchester:
Andrew Brocklehurst - David Debbage
Joy Blakey - Irving Blakey
Raymond Semp - Gareth Hyett
David Sarabowski - Paul Murray
Rhona Goldenfield - John Hassett
Pearl Fielding - Mike Hart
The first board gave great hopes for Manchester with 37 Imps on what looked like a quiet part score deal. Unfortunately, the Vikings were too strong and in the end reeled in a solid win of 52.09 - 7.91 VP
You can see all the results HERE.
A huge thanks to all the 24 players, Gunn Tove Vist, Marianne Harding, Shireen Mohandes for organising & Phillip Taylor for commentary!

Ben Beever Memorial Trophy |
The 2nd Ben Beever Memorial Trophy tournament will be held on Sunday July 7th at 2pm at Manchester Bridge Club.
Many of you will remember Ben Beever who taught a fair few of you until his untimely death in July 2015.
Ben was a gifted teacher with an easy laugh and the loveable knack of making students feel instantly at ease. In short, he made learning fun!
Not only was Ben a talented bridge player, he was also a renowned and skilled juggler. He was also instrumental is developing the 'Juggler's Club' bidding system which is still used by several players in the County and elsewhere.
Last year , Ben’s mother, Pru Jupe, donated a trophy in her son's memory to be contested annually at The Manchester Bridge Club. She hopes to be able to present the trophy again this year.
The first tournament was a tremendous success and attracted a large, good quality field. Eddie Thornton-Cham and Tony Hodgson won, ironically playing the “Juggler’s Club’ system which Ben played such an important role in developing.
Cheese & biscuits as well as normal refreshments will be available.

At a MCBA Executive meeting yesterday it was decided that the 2024 AGM of MCBA will be held on:
Date: Thursday 30th May 2024
Time: 7:30pm
Venue: Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme Bridge Club
Apart from the usual business there will be wine and food during a break and a prize giving ceremony for league winners and other MCBA events.
The papers will be circulated closer to the date.
Any agenda items to Alan Mould (Email Alan) by Thursday 16th May at the latest please.
Officers: Again reports to me by Thursday 16th May at the latest please as that will be when I send out the papers. Reports at the AGM will again be taken by exception.
Nominations for officers, duly proposed and seconded to Alan Mould (Email Alan) at any point please (nominations will also be accepted on the day).
We have a number of vacancies of major offices this year, including the chair (Irene is standing down), the Tournament secretary (Michael is standing down), two on the selection committee, membership secretary (I am standing down) as well as sundry other posts, so if you are able to offer any time at all your association needs you! A detailed "Job description" will be emailed in the coming few days.
I would remind everyone that a quorum for the AGM is 25 members present.

Cantor Cup |

The Cantor Cup for beginners and inexperienced duplicate players was held on Sunday 26th February Manchester Bridge Club.
Fourteen pairs competed, with Chris and Tammy Lam winning with a fine score of nearly 69%. Second were Anthony Harrison and Michael Donegan who graduated from the beginner's class at Manchester in December. Third were Christine Richardson and Linda LiDavies.
Thanks to Nicholas Greer for directing, Susan Triggs and Anne Naylor for organising and to Manchester Bridge club for hosting.
Manchester Country Bridge Association is very grateful to the Cantor Family for their sponsorship of this annual event!

Manchester Win Tollemache |
The event took place on 18-19th February near Stratford upon Avon. The Manchester team was John Holland, Alan Mould, Michael Byrne, John Hassett, Catherine Draper, Andrew Woodcock, Tom Slater and Alec Smalley. Non-playing captain and reserve was Rhona Goldenfield.
After 36 years as a separate county Manchester have finally won the Tollemache after finishing second six times during this millennium. Congratulations to all four pairs who were all positive on the cross imps with Alan/John the best pair overall and Catherine/Andrew second. They averaged nearly 15 VPs per match which is the best score for many years and won all their matches to win by a big margin from Middlesex.
Results are on the EBU web site.

More Bridge Literature
On a trip to London in the mid 1990’s I got hold of a gem of a book “Bridge Literature” written by Nick Smith. Last year he published a sequel “More Bridge Literature”.
If you like single dummy problems, this is the book for you. It has 32 of the most difficult problems I have seen contained in a single book.
If you like literature, it is the bridge book for you.
If you like a humorous take on bridge players it is the book for you.
I will, with Nick’s permission solve one of the book’s single dummy problems with you - but you’d have to get the book to find out how Richard III ended up under a carpark in Leicester!

“West’s greedy double has persuaded you to run to 6NT, a good decision as it turns out. West leads the ♣8. What is the safest line? Clue: East turns out to have a doubleton club”
We know that East has some 8 spades, and the hint tells us that East has 2 clubs. The double of 6♦ tells us that West has 4 diamonds. So we know that East is 8-3-0-2.
Counting tricks we can count 3 in spades, 3 in Hearts 5 in diamonds and 5 clubs, the problem is that we have to give up 2 tricks in diamonds to get to the 5. How to get to 12 without giving up 2?
Without the clue, we would start by testing the club suit, so we win the the lead in dummy. Now we cash 2 more clubs and note that it doesn’t break 4-3. What did you discard on the clubs? I know I would have discarded 2 diamonds and gone down. You have to discard ♠ Ace & ♠ Queen! When you have discovered that the clubs don’t behave you unblock the hearts and this is what is left around the table:

What is West to discard when you now play the ♠ 10 to dummy’s Jack? If East allows it to win, West has now been squeezed in 3 suits. If West discarded a ♥, Cash the Heart winners to squeeze west in the Minors. If West discarded a ♣ cash your club winners to squeeze West in the red suits and if West discarded a ♦ , Duck a ♦ to West and claim.
If East wins the Spade, a spade back is as good as anything and as before West is squeezed in 3 suits. A beauty if I ever saw one, and if you managed this one, feel free to contact the selectors for any of the national teams!

Gazette Cup |
Final Results for the Gazette Cup can be found under 'Results' in the Menu
Manchester A and Bramhall & Cheadle A tied on VPs at the top. They also tied their head to head on VPs but Manchester actually won that match in IMPs by 1 IMP and will represent the County in the Garden Cities Final

Charity Event |

This month, in memory of the late Lesley Johnson, who died far too early from Motor Neurone Disease, we are holding our monthly charity event in support of Motor Neurone Disease Association - Manchester Branch.
To read more about what they do, and what you can do to support their work follow the link HERE
I started playing club bridge in Manchester Bridge Club in 2015 and Lesley Johnson was a fierce and friendly competitor. Just having the privilege of getting to know her, even if it was just once a week was inspirational.
Let's use this months charity event to raise a good chunk of money in support of other sufferers of this disease as well as in support of research into its causes and prevention.

Junior Camrose |

Junior Camrose and Peggy Bayer Cup have now concluded and after a successful competition England won both competitions. We owe a huge thanks to Joy Blakey for all her hard work in hosting this competition. The amount of work she has put in in organising everything was immense. Due to her hard work, the event could run smoothly even though she herself could not attend due to a health incident. We wish her a speedy recovery!
They players gave us a lot of good bridge, entertainment and excitement, and regardless of where they ended up in the final ranking have every reason to be proud of what they did this weekend. Congratulations and thanks!
This event could not have been run without the volunteers a huge thanks to you all.
We want to extend a special thanks to Kevin and Celia who really stood up to the plate on Joy's behalf at the venue. Thank you both so much.
A special thanks also to Tom Furness who, not only did one, two but three sessions as vu-graph operator - with such pleasant attitude and willingness to help, Joy only had to ask. He is a young junior player and we're sure we will see his name in lights as a future England international.
The RealBridge Operators managed to do an excellent job, as did the commentators. For thouse of you who did not listen to Irving Blakey and Raymond Semp commentating - you missed a huge double act in the making. Thanks to all the commentators for your effort!
Thanks also to Shireen Mohandes and the RealBridge team for all their hard work helping us in setting up the vu-graph.
Lastly Congratulations to England who won both trophies - They will have to look over their shoulder to keep the other nations behind in years to come!

These Conditions of Contest are the definitive conditions under which the Manchester Contract Bridge Association (MCBA) Online League will run. The League Secretary, Adam Wiseberg has produced a series of YouTube videos showing how to set up and play matches on BBO. It is strongly advised that players look at these videos to help them set up online matches if they are unfamiliar with the procedure. The videos can be found at: bridgewebs.com/manchesterevents/.
- Definitions
- The Conditions of Contest for the Manchester Contract Bridge Association (MCBA) Online League comprise these Conditions of Contest and the general regulations of the EBU concerning matches played privately. In the event of any conflict between the EBU regulations on matches played privately and these regulations, these regulations shall prevail.
- For any issues relating to the league, these regulations, arranging league matches, or any other matter relating to the MCBA League, please contact the League Secretary, Adam Wiseberg, at league@manchesterbridge.org.uk
- Scope of the League
- The MCBA Online League is a local league played by teams with MCBA affiliation, either primary or secondary. Teams will consist of up to eight players each of who must be registered with the League Secretary before playing in a match. Other than that all members of the team must be members of MCBA, there are no other restrictions on who can be in a team. Registration of players is a one tme process and will carry forward from season to season.
- The exact format of the Online League will depend on number of entries but will normally be 7 Divisions each consisting of 6 teams.
- The Online League will run in cycles which will be referred to as Seasons, whereby a match is played each week until all have played all in the Division. Then promotion and relegation takes place and a new Season begins.
- Each week of the Season will begin on a Friday with Season 6 commencing on Friday 2nd April 2021. The suggested day for matches to be played will be Thursday but teams may play on another day by mutual agreement. Matches should be played by the Thursday of each match week. In extreme cases such as illness or holidays a match may be postponed beyond the scheduled match week but only one such instance will be allowed for each team in each cycle. It is recommended that teams who know they will be unable to play a match in the correct week should try to rearrange it for an earlier week if possible. Any team which refuses to play at least one of their matches on a Thursday will be asked to withdraw from the League. Matches can be played at any time of the day or night by mutual agreement of the Captains.
- Season 7 will end at midnight on Thursday 13th May 2021.
- Promotion and relegation between divisions at the end of each Season will be on a 1-up and 1-down basis between divisions, the exact number for promotion and relegation between divisions being decided by the League Secretary before the cycle starts, except that may be varied when Divisions are resized because of new teams or teams dropping out. Additional promotions/non-relegations may be made by the League Secretary (based on the average number of VPs scored per match) to balance the divisions.
- If a team drops out of a division then, unless a new team of suitable standard comes in (see 8 below), they will be replaced by an additional promotion from the division below.
- The Online League position of a team which splits up will be retained by the larger contingent or by the captain if the contingents are equal in size. In order to retain their place in a division in the following cycle, a team must either retain at least four players or retain two or more players who each played at least half of the matches.
- Newly formed teams are positioned at the discretion of the League Secretary (normally just below or reasonably appropriate to their perceived ability level).
- Ties in terms of Victory Points will be split by the result (in VPs) of the match between the teams, and then by total IMPs over the season.
- The Online League will continue Season by Season until such time as the Executive Committee of the MCBA deems that it is no longer required.
- During the duration of the Online League the default postion will be that teams will continue from Season to Season unless they advise the League Secretary of their intention to withdraw from the following season no later than one week before the end of the current season.
- Any team not giving the necessary notice to withdraw will be reuquired to pay the entry fee for the following season.
- Entry Fee
- The entry fee will be £16 per team for the Season
- Entry fees are due by 31st March 2021. Teams who have not paid their entry fee by the start of the Season will have a 3VP penalty in each match they play during the season.
- Payment is preferred by BACS. Bank details : Account name : MCBA. Sort Code : 01-07-20 A/c Number : 41526708. Please use OLE07 followed by the team name as the reference when paying. Contact the League Secretary if you are unable to pay by BACS.
- Team Members and Eligibility
- A team may have a maximum of eight players.
- All players in a team must be current members of the EBU and must have Manchester as their county of primary or secondary allegiance before the start of the first match. School students are exempt from this requirement.
- Any team fielding a player in a match who does not have Manchester as County of primary or secondary allegiance (except for school students) will forfeit the match and score 0 VPs.
- No player may play for more than one team in the League in any one season, except in the case of a substitute agreed with the League Secretary in advance (see section on substitutes). Any team which plays a player who has already played for another team in any division (except for substitutes) will forfeit all matches in which that player played and will score 0 VPs for those matches.
- Captains can add players during the season up to a maximum of 8 by contacting the League Secretary by email. This must be done BEFORE the player plays in a match.
- By registering to play in a team in this league all team members agree to their names and contact details being held in a database managed by MCBA and to receive regular or periodic emails about County events or other bridge matters.
- Arranging Matches
- The League is meant to be friendly. It is thus assumed that all matches can be arranged amicably between the team captains.
- A match is to be played each week, in line with a schedule to be published by the League Secretary. Any captain(s) who have difficulty arranging any match should contact the League Secretary who will advise as far as possible. Given the short nature of the Seasons it is imperative that matches are played within the timescales given. If a match cannot be played by the end of the Season, the League Secretary will award a score as he deems appropriate.
- All matches should be arranged by mutual agreement between the captains.
- Either captain may initiate the arrangement of matches, though the onus is on the away captain to initiate the contact.
- Matches can be played on any agreed online platform, though Bridgebaseonline (BBO), www.bridgebase.com, is the assumed platform, and the default unless both captains agree to a different platform.
- For those familiar with RealBridge the League Secretary will set up a RealBridge teams 'room' each Thursday. Matches must commence at 7pm and all players must be seated by 6:50pm.
- When arranging a match, the date, start time and platform should all be clearly specified. It is also useful for captains to exchange phone numbers, in case they need to contact each other on the night.
- The home team is responsible for setting up the match online, unless the captains agree that the away team should do so.
- On occasion, through no fault, a match has to be cancelled, and it will need to be re-arranged. This should be done as soon as possible to avoid delaying the Online League Cycle. If it cannot be arranged by the end of the cycle the League Secretary will award a score to the match as he deems appropriate.
- Playing Conditions and Playing the Match
- Matches are of 16 boards. These can be played in one stanza of 16 boards or two stanzas of 8 boards each with a change of opponents. If the captains cannot agree which format to play then the default will be two stanzas of 8 boards with a change of opponents.
- There should be no break of longer than five minutes between the stanzas unless both captains have agreed that before the match starts.
- The home team has a choice of opponents (seating rights).
- For matches on BBO Captains should set matches up with +private+ and +slow+ in the description field. This will prevent other players trying to enter your match and will stop a match timing out if it is played very slowly.
- Matches should be set up with Undos allowed. Undos for genuine misclicks in the bidding are allowed by the EBU in the Sky Blue Book and so undo requests during the auction should be allowed by the opponents. If an undo is granted and afterwards the opposing team feels that the subsequent bid indicates a change of mind then they should advise the opponent accordingly and ask if they are prepared to revert to the original bid. If not then they can reserve their rights and ask for a ruling later as per Section 7 below. Undos during play are not allowed.
- For matches on BBO if a board is lost in Stanza 1 through slow play then BBO wil score it as 0 IMPs. In this case an extra board should be added to stanza 2 to bring the total of scored boards to 16. If the board was played by half the team in Stanza 1 then that score will be scrapped and replaced by the score in the additional board in Stanza 2.
- For matches on BBO if a board is lost in a single Stanza match through slow play then the captain will have to set up another team match to play the missing board. BBO will not allow team matches of fewer than 3 boards so set up a 3 board match and take the score from the first board only and add to the 13 scored in the previous stanza. To speed up completion of the match you can pass the boards out. The results of the last two boards will show as 0. The same procedure should be used if a board is lost in Stanza 2 of a match played in two Stanzas; as in 6.4 above the board which is only played at one table will be scrapped and replaced by the additional board. Use of +slow+ (see 2 above) in the description will prevent these problems.
- If a mtach is abandoned for any reason after Stanza 1 has been completed then the remaining stanza may be played on another mutually agreed date before the end of the season. If both Captains choose not to play the remaining Stanza then match will be scored on the basis of the 8 boards played and the IMPs will be converted to VPs using the continuous 8 board scale. If one Captain wants to play the remaining stanza and the other doesn't then the entire match will be deemed as a default by the team which chooses not to play the remaining stanza and will be scored according to 11.4 of these Conditions of Contest.
- All players must provide to the captain setting up the match their BBO names (or other platform as appropriate) so the match can be set up in a timely fashion.
- It is strongly advised that all players are on BBO (or other platform) at least 10 minutes before the match is due to start. Any match set up on BBO will fail if any of the players is not on the site and the captain will have to try to create the match again. To avoid this, players should ensure they are online in good time. All players must ensure that they are in Competitive and it is recommended that they also click on Team Matches and wait in the Team Match lobby.
- All players must abide by the EBU Best Behaviour at Bridge guidelines. Anyone who thinks they have been affected by bad behaviour should report back to the League Secretary as soon as possible.
- Players should under no circumstances be watching the match they are playing in on another device nor should anyone else in the same room be watching the match on another device. Players should also not communicate with their partner via phone, Zoom or other method about the play or bidding of the hand until the hand is over. This is serious cheating and will be treated as such by MCBA if discovered.
- Team captains should agree whether kibbitzers are allowed. In the case where one team allows kibitzers and the other not, then kibitzers are not allowed.
- For matches on BBO players must self-alert in line with BBO regulations. See the video on this at bridgewebs.com/manchesterevents/. for an explanation of how to do this.
- Level 4 conventions as defined in the EBU Blue Book are allowed in all divisions of the league. However, pairs playing methods or conventions that may be unfamiliar to opponents should note that the onus is on them to fully explain their methods to opponents. For methods that may be unknown to opponents, it is considered good practice for a pair to make available a convention card to the opposing team captain prior to any match. This can be done by email. For example, a pair playing Polish Club might wish to do this as their opponents may never have come across this system before. However, there is no requirement to do this.
- Rulings
- For matches on BBO note that although there is a Call TD option in the menu this will NOT bring a TD to the table in a team match.
- If a ruling is required, please do not stop the match but continue until the end of the match having advised the other pair and their captain that you are reserving your rights. Then contact the League Secretary with all the details including the BBO login names of the four players at the table. He will then arrange for a ruling to be made
- A request for a ruling must be made within 24 hours of the end of the match
- If you wish to appeal the TD ruling, send the full details about the hand to the League Secretary using an Appeal Form which can be downloaded from the EBU site (https://www.ebu.co.uk/laws-and-ethics/forms). The form should make clear what details are agreed upon by both teams. The League Secretary will consult with suitable players and make a ruling with reference to EBU regulations.
- Teams unhappy with the League Secretary’s ruling may appeal to the EBU about the ruling, but unless it is a matter of bridge regulation, they may decline to hear it.
- Incorrect Direction of Seating
- It will be obvious if you are sitting incorrectly, because you will find you are playing your teammates! If this happens cancel the match and set it up again, following the video at bridgewebs.com/manchesterevents/, to make sure you get the match setup correctly. To cancel the match click on your Director tab then click on the match and the bottom option on the green menu will be Cancel Tournament.
- If a match is abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances with neither team at fault, then any remaining boards should be replayed at another date that week. If the match cannot completed by the end of the cycle, then the League Secretary will award a score as he sees fit.
- Scoring and Reporting Results
- Scoring will be by IMPs, converted to VPs on the EBU continuous VP scale for 16 boards matches as given in Appendix A.
- Full details of the match including the name of the winning team and the net IMP difference should be noted and uploaded to the EBU website https://www.ebu.co.uk/members/v2/ within 24 hours of a match being played by either captain. To submit a League Result:
- Click My EBU and enter your EBU No and Password
- Click Utilities and EBU League
- Click on the link for your team
- Click on the specific match (little noepad and pencil icon) and enter the results and tick players accordingly
- Substitutes
- If fewer than four players are available for a pre-arranged match, then the following options are available:
- Try and re-arrange the match
- Register another player(s) on the team who is available for the match. See Section 4 number 5. Such a player(s) must not have played for any other team in any match in that season.
- Apply to the League Secretary for a substitute(s) for the match.
- The League Secretary is under no obligation to grant a substitute(s) and will only do so if convinced that the other options are not viable. Any substitute must not:
- have played for a team in the same or a higher ranking division in that season
- be materially stronger than the player(s) substituted for. This will be determined by examining the NGS grades of the players involved. If either or both players have their NGS grade hidden, then the substitute will automatically be deemed of higher rank and not be allowed.
- There will be a compulsory 5 VP penalty per substitute per match in which a substitute is played, subject to a team scoring a minimum of 0 VPs. The VP score of the opposing team will not be affected by this. So, for example, if a team with a substitute wins 15-5, then the team with the substitute will score 10 VPs and the team without the substitute will score 5 VPs.
- Playing a substitute without agreement of the League Secretary will result in the match being forfeited and the team scoring 0 VPs.
- The League Secretary will inform the opposing captain that a substitute(s) is being played and who the substitute is, but it is good practice for the captain of the team with the substitute(s) to also inform the opposing team captain.
- Defaults
- All matches must be completed before the announced "End of Season" date, as stated in 2.5 above.
- Any outstanding matches will be awarded a score as deemed fit by the League Secretary according to 11.3 & 11.4 below.
- If the League Secretary deems that one team is at fault that team will score 0 VPs and the other team will score as in 11.4 below. If the League Secretary deemed that neither team was at fault, then the match will be scored as in 11.4 below. Teams may appeal this decision to the League Secretary who will form a Committee of MCBA Officers to hear the appeal, but the appeal would have to be heard within 1 week.
- If a team is awarded a match as a result of a default by the opposing team or no fault on either side, then:
- The defaulting team receives no VPs.
- The other (or both teams in the case of no fault) team will be awarded 10 +(their VP average – opponent’s VP average) VPs (Mould formula)
(subject to a minimum of 10VPs and a maximum 20VPs in the case of a default match and a minimum of 0VPs and a maximum of 20VPs in the case of a no fault match)
Artificial VP scores from other defaulted matches are not included in this calculation.
- Withdrawals
- On occasion a team withdraws from the Online League.
- If a team withdraws from the Online League having played fewer than half its matches in a Season (rounded up in the case of an odd number), all results against that team will be cancelled.
- If the team has played at least half its matches in the Season (rounded up in the case of an odd number), results in the remaining matches are calculated using the default match formula above.
- The League Secretary reserves the right to refuse entry in the following cycle(s) to some or all the members of a team who consistently default matches or consistently withdraw during the cycle(s). For this purpose, consistent will be withdrawing in two cycles or defaulting two or more matches in two consecutive cycles.
- Masterpoints
- Local points will be awarded in accordance with the EBU Masterpoint Handbook.

Then contact the League Secretary with all the details including the BBO login names of the four players at the table. He will then arrange for a ruling to be made.
- If you wish to appeal the TD ruling, send the full details about the hand to the League Secretary using an Appeal Form which can be downloaded from the EBU site (https://www.ebu.co.uk/laws-and-ethics/forms).

- Each week of the Season will begin on a Friday with Season 5 commencing on Friday 1st January 2021.
- Season 5 will end at midnight on Thursday 5th February 2021.
- The Online League will continue Season by Season until such time as the Executive Committee of the MCBA deems that it is appopriate for resumption of a Face to Face League and for that League to replace the Online League.
- Entry fees are due by the start of the Season.
- Payment is preferred by BACS Payment is preferred by BACS. Bank details : Account name : MCBA. Sort Code : 01-07-20 A/c Number : 41526708. Please use the team name as the reference when paying.
He will then arrange for a ruling to be made.
- If you wish to appeal the TD ruling, send the full details about the hand to the League Secretary using an Appeal Form which can be downloaded from the EBU site (https://www.ebu.co.uk/laws-and-ethics/forms).

- Click on the specific match (little noepad and pencil icon) and enter the results and tick players accordingly
- Substitutes

If the captains cannot agree a which format to play then the default will be two stanzas of 16 boards with a change of opponents.
- There should be no break of longer than five minutes between the stanzas unless both captains have agreed before the match starts.
- The home team has a choice of opponents (seating rights).
- For matches on BBO Captains should set matches up with +private+ and +slow+ in the description field. This will prevent other players trying to enter your match and will stop a match timing out if it is played very slowly.
- Team captains shold agree whether kibbitzers are allowed.
He will then arrange for a ruling to be made.
- If you wish to appeal the TD ruling, send the full details about the hand to the League Secretary using an Appeal Form which can be downloaded from the EBU site (https://www.ebu.co.uk/laws-and-ethics/forms).
- Any outstanding matches will be awarded a score as deemed fit by the League Secretary accoridng to 11.4 below.
In such a case:
- If a team withdraws from the Online League having played fewer than half its matches in a Season (rounded up in the case of an odd number) in the season, all results against that team will be cancelled.
- Appendix A: Scale of IMPs to VPs For MCBA Online League Matches

Higson Finals |
The finals of the Higson Cup & Plate were held at St Peter's Assembly Rooms on Sunday 21st June
7 teams played in each of the finals and it was great to see so many bridge players in the same room for a County event for the first time since March 2020
Huge congratulations to the winners were The Sandbaggers - Julia Bannister, Ross Worthington, Steve Mattinson and Rob Harris (Joyce White, Mike Parr and Steve Tearle in earlier rounds) who put in a great performance to overcome the massive IMPs lead of Tracy Sherman's Deal or No Deal once the handicaps were applied. St Titus were third.
The results of the handicapped event are here

Congratulations the plate final was won by Revolver - Howard Rosemarine, Jonathan Berg, Jeffrey Bor and Adrian Shiers - who beat Allsorts who put up a strong performance to finish second and Hindsight Convention, the strongest team in the plate final who finished 3rd.
Results are here

Thanks to Jeff Smith for directing both finals and apologies from the Cup Secretary (Adam Wiseberg) for an error in calculating the VP scores resulting in the wrong winners being announced on the day

Charity Summer Break |
Summer Break and A Thanks
When we first started our online sessions back in March 2020 they were free to enter and the County Executive realised that this might be an opportunity to have a charity event once a month to support local organisations in the time of crisis. So, in the early dark times of lockdown starting in April, we held a charity event on the last Wednesday of the month.
The response from all of you, together with contributions from the County treasury, has been quite simply, fantastic, and I thank you all for your generosity. Each of the recipients has been so touched to receive our generous donations and written lovely letters in appreciation. My thanks also to the brilliant directors who not only donate and play, but also do not charge to run the events.
The total raised in the 14 months is £11,550 and the recipients have been:
St. Ann's Hospice, Francis House, Centrepoint Manchester, The Seashell Trust, Nicky Alliance Day Centre, The Compassionate Friends, Manchester Mind, Mustard Tree, The Neuromuscular Society, Prevent Breast Cancer at Wythenshawe Hospital, Prostate Cancer at the Christie, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Motor Neurone Disease Association and Moodswings.
With the easing of lockdown and the prospect of summer ahead of us, we are all taking a break. If possible in the Autumn, we may run more Charity Duplicates - Manchester County Cares - thank you all, once again, for your amazing support.
Enjoy the summer and stay well
Joy Blakey.

Our May Charity Pairs will be in support of Moodswings, an award winning Manchester based Charity. This Month we will run it as an IMP pairs.
Founded in 1999, it is their aim to help people recover from mood problems and the severe emotional distress they can cause.
Mood problems can range from periods of severe anxiety or depression to episodes of high and low mood. The effects on education, employment, relationships and family life can be devastating.
The work of the Charity is based on a belief that people can recover from severe mood problems and move on to lead happier and fuller lives. From its centre in Manchester, Moodswings reaches out across the north west and beyond with a message of real hope and optimism for individuals and their families and friends.
Our evidence-based, down to earth approach is reflected in the range of innovative services we provide.

24th March 2021
To the members of Manchester Country Bridge Association,
On behalf of everyone at Mustard Tree, I would like to offer my most heartfelt thankyou for your recent donation of £600.00 for our causes.
This money will have a direct impact on the lives of those experiencing the struggle of homelessness and poverty in Greater Manchester. You enable us to support those who are facing multiple barriers in life, so they don’t face them alone. Your money will be used where it’s needed most, to enable those we work with to create their own avenues for change.
Much like yourselves, we have had to greatly change our model, offer and priorities over the past 12 months, as we constantly try to adapt to the barriers Covid-19 throws at us. Like your tournaments, we migrated our courses and classes online, which we initially found a struggle due to people’s issues around lack of access to hardware/software and digital illiteracy.
However, we feel that we’ve turned a corner with this now, with more people than ever taking part in our online activities – and we’ve decided that we’ll keep them running alongside our on-site programmes once lockdown is lifted.
I find it commendable that you have not only been able to adapt to the restrictions, but have also turned it into an opportunity to raise funds for organisations such as ourselves. Thank you for thinking of others when times are so difficult for all. I’m currently working on a new ‘virtual fundraising guide’ for the charity and would love to include MCBA as a shining example of how communities can still support us through creativeness and innovation – if any of the members would like to provide a testimonial, I’d be more than happy to include.
We are here because chronic poverty, extreme inequality and severe disadvantage still exists in our society. Mustard Tree is a place of hope and welcome, where people create opportunity and gain the skills and self-confidence they need to turn their life around. Thank you for entrusting us to use your money most effectively, and helping us in our mission of combatting poverty and preventing homelessness.
Thanks again and best wishes to you all.

MCBA - COUNTY NEWSLETTER APRIL 2021
Changes to Schedule
On 30th March 2020 MCBA organised the first online bridge event within the county. Since then an enormous amount of work has been put in to support, train and help the clubs to get up and running online. Now there are around 450 tables a week playing close to 50 events! This tremendous success is mostly down to the work put in by Adam Wiseberg and Dave Tilley. We all owe them a huge thank you.
As a consequence, the weekly events run by the county have ceased to have as much importance and attraction. Therefore, the MCBA Online Committee has decided to abandon its weekly events on Mondays and Wednesdays, as of May 2021. However, we will keep the Friday IMP pairs going. This event has a solid following and is also a good quality event. The importance of keeping our Charity Day means that we will make the last Friday of the month our Charity Event - ie May 28th.
Please don’t forget to support this Wednesday 28th April for Motor Neurone Disease in memory of Lesley Johnson.
As the number of games run by the county will be substantially reduced, our Deal Of The Week column on Manchester Events website will be converted to Deal of the Month.
Green Pointed Swiss Teams
No-one knows yet when face to face bridge will re-commence and in what form face to face and online bridge will co-exist when all lockdown restrictions are lifted. The government’s roadmap is to lift all lockdown restrictions by 21st June 2021. The county will keep an eye on this and in due course decide the format - either face to face or online with RealBridge.
DIARY DATE: GP SWISS TEAMS
Sunday 1st August
Regardless of how and where it is run - put the date in your diary and be prepared for one of the calendars big events.

I'm not in the habit of publicising individual charitable events, but I feel that on this occasion an exception is warranted. Please read below a message from my friend Norman Innis, Chair of Kent, regarding an event that Kent, Surrey and Sussex have combined to run.
Ian
We are all aware of the terrible refugee situation of people (mostly women and children) fleeing the war in Ukraine. I am sure that many of you will already have donated to the relief effort, but here is an opportunity to donate whilst enjoying the hobby that we all love. On Saturday 2nd April Kent/Surrey/Sussex have combined to run a Green Point Swiss Pairs in aid of the Ukraine Appeal. There will also be a 9 High 18 board competition in the afternoon. The Swiss Pairs will be on RealBridge, the 9 High on BBO. Every penny (and $) collected will go to Ukraine via the Disasters Emergency Committee. The EBU and all Counties and TDs will not be charging.
Be you a seasoned veteran of GP events or a complete newcomer, please, please play if you possibly can and help contribute to this hugely important relief effort. If you haven't played online before, there is information available to assist you to register with Realbridge or BBO, which is quite simple.
The entry forms are on the Kent, Surrey and Sussex websites.
Thank you and I hope that you can join us.
Norman Inniss
Chair Kent CBA
Kind Regards
Ian Payn

Wednesday, 21 April 2021
Receipt No: 1190776
Dear Joy & Everyone at Manchester County Bridge Association
Thank you so much for your generous donation of £500.00 to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. We never take for granted the time and effort that we know you will have put into your fundraising activities and competitions, and we would like to thank you for nominating us to benefit from this fundraising.
Your generosity will allow us to help more young patients at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Over 276,000 children and young people visit the hospital each year for diagnosis or treatment and your donation will directly help us to make a difference to every child, every day.
With the support of fundraisers such as you, the charity makes a difference by funding various projects for the hospital, for example the provision of state of the art equipment for patients, funding cutting edge clinical research to improve our understanding of children’s illnesses and how best to treat them, and providing music or play therapies to help reduce the impact of hospitalisation and illness in our young patients, and to help them, and their families, feel at ease.
Finally, on behalf of all of our patients and staff within the hospital, I would like to thank you very much again for your kindness, your support is very much appreciated.
Yours sincerely
Joanne Thomas

Each team will have a sit out
There will be a break after 6 matches
The teams sitting out immediately before and after the break will have an extended break and will be advised of this by the Director

Statement from the WBF Management Committee |
Statement from the WBF Management Committee, 3rd March 2022
The WBF Management Committee, with all its members present, met via zoom on Wednesday 2 March to discuss how the war promoted by Russia with the support of Belarus is impacting the World 2021 Bridge Team Championships to be held in Salsomaggiore Terme, Italy, from 27th March to 9th April 2022 and the wider Bridge Movement.
The WBF Management Committee unanimously expressed its concerns and sympathy for Ukrainian bridge players and citizens alike. It was also united in its strong condemnation of the governments of Russia and Belarus for the treacherous attack on Ukraine and the unacceptable invasion of its national territory.
In accordance with the resolution of the IOC, the Management Committee unanimously decided to not allow the Russian National Teams to participate in the World 2021 World Bridge Team Championships to be held in Salsomaggiore Terme, Italy. from 27th March to 9th April 2022.
The Committee was also united in stating that this resolution has to be seen as a consequence of the despicable invasion of Ukraine by Russia, expressing its great regret towards the Russian bridge players community and the athletes who cannot attend the event

MCBA - COUNTY NEWSLETTER JUNE 2021 |
Chair's Corner
As Chair of Manchester County Bridge I want to give heartfelt thanks to all the people who have been involved in organising and running Manchester County’s Online bridge. Back in March when we had to stop playing bridge face to face things looked bleak. How would we cope without our games of bridge?
Very quickly individuals in the County stepped in and organised on line games, ensuring that hundreds of our members could continue with their favourite mind sport from home during lockdown. They also organised Inter County matches, monthly Charity Pairs, Green Pointed events, the Higson Cup.and online league which is now in its 8th season. So from late March 2020 to 31 May 2021 that’s almost 3000 tables.
In addition, during that period we have had an average of 42 teams playing teams bridge for a total of 40 weeks
The team has also helped to introduce RealBridge across Manchester and helped clubs with the set up of their online sessions. The team has also helped with the training of teachers in the use of IT platforms.
As time has gone by the Clubs in the County have taken up the baton and developed their own online sessions. The need for the County to provide sessions has diminished and accordingly will take a break over the Summer and see what the situation is in the Autumn. We are sure that the future will involve playing bridge online as well as face to face. The County will do whatever we can to enable players to keep playing the game they love.
So, thanks to the team who gave up so much of their time to make this possible: Alec Smalley, Dave Tilley, Jeff Smith, Joy Blakey, Victor Ridding, Espen Gisvold and the leader of the team Adam Wiseberg.
Irene Davies
Charity Thanks
Enjoy the summer and stay well
Joy Blakey.

Hi Joy
Many thanks for your email and thank you so much for thinking of Moodswings. As a small charity we very much appreciate all donations. I can assure you that this will go directly towards supporting vulnerable people, some of whom have no other form of support. We are grateful and touched that you chose us and thrilled to receive it.
I have attached our bank details. If you would like us to thank you publicly then please let us know how best to do this via social media etc and we would be happy to. Please pass on our thanks and the gratitude of our trustees to your members.
Best wishes
Linda
