With your new club in Los Cristianos now getting into full swing, let me tell you about the latest exciting developments.

A refurbishment of the clubhouse will enable us to increase capacity to 9 tables per session - with 6 tables on the covered terrace and 3 inside the club.

Individual players are guaranteed a partner because we have a "host" system in operation at every session.

In April, May, November and December 2025 I will be running TEN day bridge tuition holidays for complete beginners. Whatever their age, anyone with an aptitude for mental arithmetic and logical thinking could reach the standard of proficiency required to play with confidence and distinction in their local bridge club back home at the end of this short bridge holiday. Please mail or call me for details of the tuition packages available.

Looking ahead to the 2025/26 winter season, we will have a lot more beginners up to a good club standard and wanting to play competitive bridge. I have already therefore made arrangments for the exclusive use of a lovely bridge room adjacent to the current club premises. That will enable our club to accommodate up to 80 persons (20 tables) 3 days a week from November through to March 2026.

Finally to mention that Sunday bridge starting at 4pm - with the home made French apple tart offered to all participants gratis when we finish - is unsurprisingly proving very popular. To avoid disappointment, you will need to book well in advance for the February Sunday sessions as we are currently limited to 7 tables.

TWO nearly CHAMPIONS

at the Vergara Club in Madrid on 24 August 2024

After finishing not far behind the immortal Paul Hackett

in one of the biggest INDIVIDUAL competitions in the world,

I felt as happy as if I had won the Mutton Cup.

14 hours of concentration

playing 88 boards

with

44 DIFFERENT PARTNERS

ranks it my greatest performance as a player.

I partnered Paul for 2 boards and opposed him for four.

We both averaged 50% over those six hands

He finished runner-up and I was 10th.

Here we are celebrating our achievements together

The parlous state of bridge

ZERO TOLERANCE

Thw mail below appeared in my inbox on 6th August 2021. The worrying point for administrators is that it came from one of the most eminent, influential and respected members of the one million strong island community. Take a look at this extract from what he had to say. You will then understand why a zero tolerance policy in disciplinary matters is, in my view, a necessity in all clubs.

Hello Trevor,

We have played bridge as a pair for a couple of decades, both in the UK and here in Tenerife. Neither of us are in fact very comfortable with the atmosphere in a bridge club, and we are baffled as to why such a beautiful game can attract such horrible people - not everyone of course but enough nasty individuals to make the bridge leave an unpleasant taste. We far prefer a foursome in peace and quiet...

I can add that we have tried bridge clubs here and decided they were excellent disease spreading opportunities, and the only times I have been ill here are after catching something nasty in a bridge club. And that was before covid! This is all a preamble to explain why we no longer contemplate bridge in a club...

Having said that, I applaud the bridge teaching which provides something in school which is actually useful later in life in addition to a practical application of probabilities and other mathematical topics. It is the kind of teaching I would have loved to be involved in myself. I'm afraid that neither of us feel the inclination for courses or learning, not that we are so good that we have nothing to learn, but maybe we just lack the motivation...

with best wishes..."

Ever since I received that mail more than two years ago, I have been on the lookout for suitable premises in the south of Tenerife to run regular tournaments with a family atmosphere for all my bridge friends. A club where they all enjoy themselves and will have nothig to complain about. My bridge friends will now have that club. The Arona Bridge Club. As I (or my son occasionally) will be directing all the tournaments, be warned...

We always carry a supply of yellow and red cards when directing a bridge tournament!!!
