ABOUT YOUR CLUB

With your new club in Los Cristianos now getting into full swing, let me tell you about the plans for the summer and the 25/26 winter season.

From June to September 2025, there will be bridge on Monday afternoons plus an evening session on Tuesdays and a morning game on Thursdays.

We now have the capacity for 6 tables on the covered terrace and 3 inside the club.

Individual players are guaranteed a partner because we have a "host" system in operation at every session.

In November I will be running 10 & 14 day bridge tuition holidays for complete beginners. Whatever their age, anyone with an aptitude for mental arithmetic and logical thinking could reach the standard of proficiency required to play with confidence and distinction in their local bridge club back home at the end of this short bridge holiday. Please mail or call me for details of the tuition packages available.

Looking ahead to the 2025/26 winter season, we will have a lot more beginners up to a good club standard and wanting to play competitive bridge. I have already therefore made arrangements for the exclusive use of a lovely bridge room adjacent to the current club premises. It will enable our club to run afternoon or evening competitions for up to 80 persons (20 tables) on a regular basis from November through to March 2026.

TWO nearly CHAMPIONS

at the Vergara Club in Madrid on 24 August 2024

After finishing not far behind the immortal Paul Hackett

in one of the biggest INDIVIDUAL competitions in the world,

I felt as happy as if I had won the Mutton Cup.

14 hours of concentration

playing 88 boards

with

44 DIFFERENT PARTNERS

ranks it my greatest performance as a player.

I partnered Paul for 2 boards and opposed him for four.

We both averaged 50% over those six hands

He finished runner-up and I was 10th.

Here we are celebrating our achievements together

BRAVO  IRIS

And here we are with Veronique, the Director, after our lovely afternooon of bridge with Iris' friends.

I will have the honour of partnering Iris at the Racing Club next September when she will be celebrating her

HAVE your SAY
HAVE your SAY

The timings and days for bridge take account of members wishes from feedback.

Everyone - whether a member or not - is invited to give me their thoughts on the scheduling of bridge lessons and competitions.

Likewise I would like to hear from you if you have any ideas for more social events and activities which enable non bridge playing spouses to enjoy the facilities and camaraderie of the club. Three ideas that have already been suggested are wine tastings, day excursions and courses of Spanish lessons.

Some of the comments received recently from new club members:

"Hi Trevor.  Hope all's going well for you since we saw you. Beautiful weather here in Killarney the last few weeks 🙏🤣.  Thank you so much for all the  instructions and help with our bridge. I found them brilliant.  Betty. Mary"

"Good morning! We’re on our way to the airport and hopefully flying today! I wanted to thank you for all the time we spent together. I really wanted to learn bridge and I’m so happy with how far we got! See you next January. I’ll reach out and let you know how it’s going when I return home. Take care x" (Karen from Texas, USA)

"Enjoy my day? I certainly did !
I had a great time.  Thanks to you and Trevor for lightening the atmosphere for me.  Greta xx"

"I enjoyed the tournament, I know I have a lot to learn, but I will keep going. Thank you for teaching me. Delicious apple pie as well. Merriel"

AFFILIATION

ARONA BRIDGE CLUB will be affiliated to the Spanish Bridge Association (AEB). All players will be bound by AEB rules and regulations. They will be required to become members to play in club events. Either full or temporary membership will be available.

One of the requirements for clubs to affiliate to national associations is for them to to have a bridge “school”. For your information, I have a current teaching diploma issued by the AEB in Madrid. If anyone reading this article knows someone who wants to learn bridge, you may wish to note that an ntroductory lesson is available free of charge by appointment on any SATURDAY  and at any time from 1st July. The lesson can be conducted in a variety of languages. Including Spanish, French and German.

PLAYER RATINGS

Most players belonging to an affiliated club in any country will be given a rating. The ARONA BRIDGE CLUB will be no different. You can read why this is necessary and desirable. on the “Competition formats” page.

Calling all ACOL players

If you play bridge regularly outside the UK, nearly all the locals will be playing the 5 card major system. If you need a partner and there are no British expats available, you will therefore find it impossible to find anyone who could adapt to your ACOL system.

Even if you do not want to switch to the five card major on a permanent basis, it is useful to have a sufficient knowledge of the system to at least understand the opposition bids - and how to defend against it.

I will be organising one hour group sessions for ACOL players to at least learn the five card major basics. These will normally be held on Saturdays at the club and will be free of charge. But you should register your interest by mail

We all like to win occasionally

A level playing field is vital for everyone to enjoy their bridge.

It is a complex matter requiring complex measures to achieve that aim in clubs which attract a lot of visitors.

Holidaymakers of international standard get no satisfaction from marking a top on boards played against relative beginners. Conversely, the average club player can suffer a fit of depression after scoring consecutive zeroes against an expert pair playing conventions they have never heard of.

I will be addressing the issue on another page shortly. Explaining the ways that playing fields can be levelled to improve the standard of play and the enjoyment of the game.

This winter at Arona Bridge Club there is no longer any need to worry if you were one of those visitors who hitherto never saw their name in lights at the top of a leaderboard. Players will be given a rating and thereafter be able to play competitions with people of similar standard - where anyone and everyone is capable of winning.

Enjoy your bridge.

What do you think of your bridge club?

Ask any bridge player to give their honest opinion of the clubs where they played, the feedback would surprise many – and shock some.

Admittedly you cannot please everyone all the time. And in a predominately expat club with many transient players from a variety of cultures playing different systems, the potential problems are humungous.

Before taking on this particular challenge, I canvassed many of my bridge friends via a written questionnaire. A report on the feedback from that suvey - complete with quotes on common themes in the views and concerns expressed. The good, the bad and the ugly.

The text of one of the tales of woe that prompted me to conduct that survey can be found on the "Zero Tolerance" page. Bridge lovers be warned. It does not make good bedtime reading!
