Welcome to Grantham Bridge Club, an EBU club and part of the Leicestershire CBA  We play a mixture of face-to-face and online bridge to suit all abilities including duplicate, gentle duplicate and supervised play sessions.

Venue and Weekly Sessions

Every Monday evening at 7pm we hold a F2F duplicate pairs session at Barrowby Memorial Hall. 

A Next Steps supervised and mentored session is run every Tuesday evening at 6:30pm at Barrowby Reading Rooms.  We welcome all players who want to gain confidence and develop their Bridge under the supervision of experienced players in a relaxed and friendly environment. No partner required.

Tuesday evening at 7 pm (log in by 6:45) we (in partnership with Keyworth Bridge Club) are holding a Duplicate session on Realbridge.    

We run an Online Duplicate pairs session every Wednesday morning at 9.30am ( register by 9:20am) on Bridge Base Online (BBO).

A Gentle Duplicate pairs session is held every Wednesday morning at 9:30am at Barrowby Reading Rooms.

Mike O'Neill

Mike O'Neill

It is with great sadness that I am letting you know that Mike passed away on Sunday. During his final days he was cared for by Helen and the family and he died peacefully at home. Earlier in the year he had celebrated his 80th birthday.

Mike and Helen have been members of Grantham Bridge Club for many years and they were regular players on Wednesday mornings in the Reading Room before the Covid lockdowns. After that they became regular participants in the Wednesday BBO session. Mike and Helen made a great partnership in bridge as well as in life and Mike will be sorely missed by me and all those who knew him well.  Helen will let us know later details of a Celebration of Mike's life.

Club Successes

Keyworth Swiss Pairs Competition

On Wednesday 19 August, four GBC players attended the Swiss Pairs competition at Keyworth Bridge Club. The event was a first for Keyworth and was a great success, with 30 pairs entering. Players travelled from as far afield as Milton Keynes and Mansfield.

We played six rounds of six boards, with a lunch break after the first three rounds. I think it is fair to say that we were all quite tired by the end of the day!

Jacob and Neil Henfrey finished a very creditable 6th and David Cox and Ginny Dixon got off to a fantastic start, achieving a perfect score after the first round, and went on to finish 14th overall. Well done to both pairs.

Keyworth Bridge Club have said they will organise the event again, and I would highly recommend taking part. It was a great experience and a very enjoyable day. 

LCBA Samani Salver Summer Knock Out Trophy

On the same day, Lou Badcock, Jenny Armitage, Bill Barclay and Judy Hulland won the Teams of Four Summer Knockout Trophy beating a Bradgate Team in the final. Stuart Ennals also was a substitute for one of the four matches that were played between May and August.  At half time in the final both teams were level.  But we eventually came out winners by 36 IMPS.

Seminar - Two suited Overcalls

The final seminar of this series is to be held on Tuesday 8 September 2026 at 6.30pm in the Barrowby Reading Room.  Jennie Rea will be leading the seminar and the topic is "Two suited Overcalls".  This will cover Landy, Michael's Cue Bids and Unusual No Trump.  If you are interested in attending, please register here.

Beginners' Course

Beginners' Course starting September 2026

A  three term Beginners' course is starting on the evening of Tuesday 22 September 2026 and finishing mid July 2027.  

The course will be held in  Barrowby Reading Room, Church St, Barrowby NG32 1BX. and will be every Tuesday commencing 22 September 2026 at 6:45 pm and finishing by 9.00pm.  The cost is  £65 per term.

The Course Leaders are qualified Bridge teachers and will be Bill Barclay and Jennie Rea.  They will be ably assisted by other club members.

Grantham Bridge Club Policy on UNDOs when Playing Online

As an EBU affiliated Club, Grantham Bridge Club follows the EBU policy on UNDOs for online play as expressed in the EBU Player Handbook (The Blue Book), dated 1st August 2024.  In short:

  • Requests for UNDOs during the auction, where the request is made following a genuine mis-click or mis-tap, may be allowed provided that the partner of the player requesting the UNDO has not called.  UNDOs should not be requested after a change of mind and the Director should be called in the event of any doubt1.  After a player has requested an UNDO, no player should make a further call (i.e. bid, double, redouble or pass) until the UNDO has been accepted or refused.
  • Requests for UNDOs during the play will not be allowed for any reason except when authorised by the Director after a play has been influenced by misinformation.
  • Players wishing to reduce the chance of a mis-click or mis-tap occurring should adjust the settings on the platform to require a double click or double tap to confirm calls and plays. 

1  On BBO, Club Policy is that all UNDO requests during the auction should be accepted provided that the UNDO is requested straight away and before Partner has called.  However, if a player requesting an UNDO subsequently replaces a bid with a PASS, DOUBLE or REDOUBLE, that is suggestive of a change of mind and the Director should be called.
