CBAI Teams Geraldine Trophy and McMenamin Bowl Jan 17th 2021

This weekend (16/17th Jan 2021) both the Men's and Ladies CBAI pairs and teams even took place on BBO. Congratulations to Gay Keaveney on winning the men's team event  (the Geraldine Trophy).CBAI Mens' Teams (Geraldine Trophy)  (32 Teams),  Winners:  Gay Keaveney, Martin Jones, BJ O’Brien and Ranald Milne. 
Gay also came 3rd with his partner Marin Jones in the CBAI men's pairs (the Revington Cup) on Saturday 16th January.

We also had a good representation in the CBAI Womens' events. Well done to Deirdre O'Halloran and her teammates on finishing 5th/40 in the CBAI Womens Team (McMenamin Bowl) (40 Teams) Nan Murtagh, Mary Shannon, Deirdre O'Halloran, Orla McEntee. Also congratulations to May O'Sullivan & Colette Mulhern on finishing 2nd in Session 1 one of the womens' pairs and overall 12th/66 pairs in the Jackson Cup.

 

Sligo Congress 11-12th June 20201

Well done to Joan Kenny & Enda Glynn on winning the Congress Pairs and to  Conor Boland, Karel deRaeymaeker, Enda Glynn and Gay Keaveney on wining the Congress Teams in the  Sligo Congress (Yeats Country Charity Bridge Congress) 

National Teams 23rd-25th April 2021

Well done to all our teams who competed in the National Teams event the weekend. 

Blackrock College, Co Dublin Congress, 26th-28th Feb 2021

Well done to all those who competed in the Virtual Congress hosted by Blackrock College Bridge Club, Co Dublin, Feb 26th-28th 2021. All proceeds went to the Laura Lynn Children's Hospice, €10,000 was raised.

Congratulations to Margaret McCarthy/ Declan Harte on winning the Intermediate Teams with their partners John & Mary Bourke (Mayo), see results here.

Kenmare Congress, November 13th-15th

Congratulations to Siobhan O'Sullivan/ James Ward and Rhona Bolger/Margaret Forde on winning the T4 Intermediate Teams event in the Kenmare Bridge Congress which was held on Sunday 15th November on BBO.

The Moylan Cup took place on BBO 10th/11th April. The Moylan Cup is for the select few Top Masters.

For the 2020/21 season, we have started up Virtual Bridge clubs. If you would like to continue playing on BBO in the Western Region tournaments,  you are welcome to join in any of the clubs listed below.

Please fill in your details by pressing on the Online form for the club/clubs that you wish to join, the club secretary or treasurer will be in contact with you regarding payment, or you can contact the person in charge of the tournament.

The cost is €10 for current members and €12.50 for people who were never affiliated to the CBAI before.

O'Connor Cup, 14th March 2021

Congratulations to, Siobhan O' Sullivan/James Ward & Rhona Bolger/Margaret Forde on finishing in 3rd place in the Team of 4, O'Connor Cup. This is a special T4 event for Intermediates and the cup is donated by our very own Michael O'Connor of the Western Region.

Malahide Congress March 5th-7th, 2021

Well done to Joan Kenny and Enda Glynn on featuring in three events in the Malahide congress held virtually March 5th-7th 2021.

Joan and Enda won the congress pairs on Saturday, they came second in the mixed pairs event on Friday evening and third place in the teams with their partners, Paul Barrett and Pat Quinn.

Well done also to Margaret Forde and Tom Craig (Dublin) on finishing in third place in the mixed pairs on Friday evening.

IBU- Inter Provincial Championships Feb 20/21, 2021

The IBU Inter-Provincials took place virtually on BBO this weekend. This was the first event that was cancelled last year due to the Covid pandemic. So we have come a long way since then to be able to hold this event on BBO. Thanks to Fearghal O'Boyle, Mairead Basquille and all the team for making this event happen. There was a lot of work in the planning of each round as all matches had to be pre-set as to who wa\s playing who in each round and within each division, Inter A, Area Masters and The Open

And now to the results, I am delighted to announce that our  Connacht team Won the Open section.  A fantastic result from all our players on the Connacht team who put in great work and practice which paid off.

Alas, the Connacht teams who featured in the Area Masters and the Intermediate sections did not finish so well, but we tried our best :)

Junior Camrose/Peggy Bayer Trophy 20/21st Feb 2021

A big congratulations to our school girl Isabel Burke for representing Ireland in the Junior Camrose this weekend.

Holmes Wilson Trophy Feb (13-14th) 2021

Thanks to Fearghal O'Boyle, Mairead Basquille & Diarmuid Reddan, the Holmes Wilson was able to be held virtually on BBO this weekend (Valentine's weekend). In the past few years, this event took place in Carlow (Mount Wolsey  Hotel) with over 100 teams playing in the event. However this year, there were up to 129 teams who partook in the two-day event, 3 sessions of 30 board matches.  Our team of 4 (Gay Keaveney, Enda Glynn, David Walshe & Ciaran Coyne) set off on their "journey" to regain the title they won in 2020. Although they did not win, they finished in third place which was a super finish. A big congratulations also to our schoolgirl Isabel Burke and her team who finished best Intermediate team, finishing in 24th /129 teams.

Very sad to hear of Charlie Mullen's passing this weekend. Charlie did terrific work for the game of bridge in Portumna and was one of our early BBO ambassadors. He played regularly with Patricia Eames, and Patricia advised even from the hospital bed he part took in the BBO tournaments.

We had a great representation from Galway in the Camrose Trials which took place at the weekend, 13th-15th November which took place on the new interface Realbridge,
Well done to our Galway players, Gay Keaveney, Enda Glynn and David Walsh on putting in a great fight in the trials and finishing in 3rd place along with their teammates, Ciaran Coyne and Karel de Raeymaeker.

 

Teltscher Trophy and Lady Milne 30th Oct-1st Nov 2020

This weekend had a bridge double. Two prestigious home nations events, team of four;  Lady Milne and the Teltscher Trophy (Senior Camrose). This year the events were hosted by RealBridge, the new online platform.   We had two representatives from Galway taking part in the Teltscher Trophy, Enda Glynn and Gay Keaveney and Joan Kenny from Galway taking part in the Lady Milne.   While we did not bring home any trophy this year, our Galway representatives had very respectable performances. CBAI 2020 News Letter

Bridge Lessons for Starters/Beginners

Sean Murray from Portumna is an approved Beginner's Bridge teacher with CBAI.
Offering bridge lessons delivered via Zoom. Lessons are delivered using Powerpoint and every session has card play which the participants bid and play. All participants are able to follow the play and subsequent discussions on the hands. Comprehensive notes are provided, mailed to the participants.

The course over 20 weeks, two hour sessions. Cost is €160 per person. First session is free so that participants can satisfy themselves that they are comfortable with the format and delivery.
