Elizabeth Nam

It is with great regret and sadness that we have to inform you of the untimely passing of dear Elizabeth Nam following a short illness. She lit up any room and will be greatly missed. Our sincerest condolences to Arthur and to Elizabeth's family.

There was a private family cremation on Monday, 26th September which was followed by a memorial service for Elizabeth on Tuesday, 27th September.

In preference to floral tributes, Elizabeth requested donations to the Cardiff City Hospice charity, who looked after her with care and tenderness in her final days. To that end, Arthur's  daughter, Libby Watson, has set up a 'Just Giving' page which you can access by clicking on:   Just Giving

Welcome to Cardiff Bridge Club
NEW! Introduction to Teams Bridge

We are delighted to announce that two of our longstanding members and Internationals, Maggie Pierce and David McAndrew, are running three sessions to explain all about playing Teams. There will be a brief talk, which will be followed by a game. Afterwards the hands will be discussed. Please see the attached Notice - click Teams Info.

As you will see, the sessions will be held on the last Thursday of the months of September, October and November. The first one took place on the 29th September to be followed by sessions on the 27th October and 24th November at 7.00pm.

The top players prefer Teams to Pairs, so come along, see why and enhance your abilities. All are welcome.

Maggie and David are passionate about furthering the game of bridge. We are extremely grateful to them for giving up their time. We sincerely hope, therefore, that the sessions will be well supported.

Learn / Improve your Bridge

Two teaching sessions will be starting in the club in September:

1. We are holding new Learn Bridge lessons for beginners on Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. They started on 21st September 2022.

2. A Continuing Bridge course started on Wednesday 28th September running from 4pm to 6pm. Click HERE for more information and details of how to sign up.

The "Continuing Bridge" EBTA course 10 week outline is:-

1. Planning The Play

2. Developing The Auction

3. Defensive Guidelines

4. Competitive Bidding

5. Declarer Play

6. Tidying Up ( Bidding awkward hands)

7. Defenders Play

8. Slam Bidding

9 & 10. Some more bridge conventions

The course fee is £190 and includes the "Continuing Bridge" course book, 10 x 2 hour teaching sessions and free coffee, tea and biscuits.

We would expect to have a 2 week break in the middle of the course to accommodate "half term".

If you do attend our "Continuing Bridge" course, we would hope that you will try some of the assisted and supported play sessions (both F2F and online) run by Cardiff Bridge Club between the lessons.

For more information you can email teaching@cardiffbridgeclub.org or phone Sarah on 07930 503746. Details of how to sign up for the course can be found by clicking HERE.

Help Needed - a Message from the Committee

Dear Member

Thanks to everyone who came along to the Brainstorming session at the club and those who couldn’t come but sent in their thoughts too.

The event was a huge success and we have lots of ideas for new sessions and future events at the club.

As a result we need volunteers to help with some of the new initiatives;

 SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Can you spare a few hours a month to help plan and organise social and fundraising events at the club? The suggestions include quizzes, a Christmas Fair, Christmas Parties, American Suppers/Lunches, dinner with cabaret. Email sarahamostd@gmail.com

 HOSTING AT THE CLUB

In order to encourage players whose regular partners are unavailable to come and play, we are reintroducing the host system on Tuesday evenings and Thursday afternoons. To do this we need as many volunteers as possible who are willing to act as host by playing with any single players. If you have hosted in the past Martin will be in touch, but if you would like to join the rota please email him to be added. Email mjoseph63@hotmail.co.uk

 TDs and TUTORS

In order to run the current and expanding programme of sessions and tuition we need more trained TDs and Tutors. If you are already qualified or are interested in training please contact Sarah.

 WELCOME EVERYONE!

There was some feeling that the club is not perceived as being friendly. When you are playing please remember Best Behaviour @ Bridge and greet opponents when arriving at the table so they feel welcome. Please don’t carry on arguing/discussing/apportioning blame for the previous board (you can do that in the bar later!)

 THURSDAY EVENINGS

Thursday night is teams night and it is for everyone!

From this Autumn we are planning a different teams based session each Thursday evening.

Details to follow

Telephone Number: 07503 231354 / 02920 633761
Email Address:  rkemp100@hotmail.co.uk

Monday Afternoons

We are delighted to announce that by popular demand we are once again holding fun and sociable bridge sessions at the Club on Monday Afternoons.

This is possible because Ian Evans has kindly agreed to direct with the help of Aileen Ashmore. Both are available to assist during the session, if required, and don't worry if you haven't got a partner as this is a hosted session and so you are always assured of a game.

Every Monday: 1.30 until 4.00  Table Money: £3 for everyone (to include free coffee and tea) and you can choose to pay online at http://spadetickets.com/penylan/ or in cash on the day.

We hope that you and your friends will come and enjoy yourselves.
