  Allestree Bridge Club

The Club shall be called "Allestree Bridge Club" (hereinafter called "The Club").

  Purpose

To provide suitable facilities for and to promote the playing, of Contract Bridge.

  Objectives

To be affiliated to the English Bridge Union, through the Derbyshire Contract Bridge Association.

To employ the funds of the club in the best interest of its members.

  Management

The Management of the Club shall be conducted by a Management Committee.

The Management Committee shall consist of a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer together with as many Committee members as are considered necessary, according to the club's needs. 
The Management Committee shall be elected at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will normally take place in the month of June.
The Committee shall have the power to co-opt other non-voting members when it is deemed necessary by the particular circumstances. However, under normal circumstances the Committee shall not comprise more than ten (10) per cent of the Club membership.

The Chairperson shall be a non-voting member except that he or she will have a casting vote in the case of equality of votes on a particular topic.

On all questions of interpretation of the Club's Bye-Laws, the decision of the Management Committee shall be binding and any points not covered by the bye-laws shall be decided by the Committee.

The Management Committee shall have the power to expel any member who offends against the bye-laws of the Club or whose conduct is considered to render that person unfit for membership of the Club.  

 

  General Meetings

The AGM shall be the main business meeting of the Club, considering policy, progress and finances, but it may be suplemented by Special General meetings (SGMs)

There will be an Annual General Meeting which can be cancelled or delayed when external circumstances make the event not possible.

Notice of an AGM shall be given to all members at least two weeks prior to the date of the meeting.

A SGM may be called by the management Committee at any time, or on the signed requisition of at least ten (10) members. On receipt of such a requisition (which should be addressed to the Secretary, specifying its purpose) the secretary will call a SGM which will be held within twenty eight (28) days of the request.

 An AGM or SGM will only be considered valid if at least a quorum of 20 members are in attendance.   

  Membership

Membership of the club shall be open to all bridge-playing residents of Derby and its surrounding districts.

Acceptance for membership shall be at the discretion of the Management Committee.

Visitors shall be welcome at Club events within the limitations agreed by the Committee, and in accordance with the bye-laws.

  Accounts

The accounts of the Club shall be made up annually to the 31st May and  presented by the Treasurer to all the members at the AGM.

The accounts shall be audited annually by a person appointed by the members at the AGM.

  Annual Subscription and Table Money

The Joining Fee, Annual Subscription and Session Table Money for Club events shall be recommended by the Management Committee at the AGM, and these will be ratified or amended by the members at that meeting. At present the Joining Fee £10, Annual Subscription £5 /year, Table money £2.50 

Subscriptions are due on the first day of the Club's Financial Year (1st June) and should be paid within three (3) months thereof or membership may be forfeited, at the discretion of the Committee.    

  Dissolution of the Club

If, at an AGM or SGM, a Dissolution resolution is made and passed with a two thirds (2/3) majority of the Club members present, all the moneys will be divided between current paid up members of the Club in proportion to their individual lengths of membership.

  Bye-Laws

Voting by Proxy

Any member shall be entitled to appoint another member to act on his or her proxy at ant general Meeting of the club, but such appointments shall be notified to the Secretary in writing at least forty eight (48) hours before the time fixed for the meeting.

Attendance

Unless prevented from doing so by circumstances beyond their control, Members are expected to attend Club events on a regular basis. Failure to attend at least six (6) events per year may constitute grounds for termination of membership.

Behaviour

Members are expected to conduct themselves in as quiet a manner as possible during play, as otherwise noise can act as a distraction to other players.

Smoking

The club has a non-smoking policy within the playing area of the club.

Partners

Whilst the Club will endeavour to find playing partners for the members, there is a primary responsibility on the members to do so themselves. During any bridge session, which involves the issue of Master Points, no individual will be allowed to play on his or her own by asking for a partner each time a board is played.

Visitors

Visitors will be allowed to attend the Club up to a maximum of three visits in any one period of twelve (12) months, after which they should apply for membership. Visitors will be entitled to use the facilities of the club but will have no voting rights. Table fees of visitors will be (£1) in excess of these paid by the members, the precise amount to be decided annually at the AGM.
