August Hand of the Month - from RealBridge 19/08/26
We are looking at a 4♥ contract this month.
The bidding is interesting.
West's double shows spades and probably clubs. Her subsequent 3♣ bid confirms a strong club suit.
North has to decide between 3♥ or 4♥. With good support for partner's hearts and perhaps just 2 losers in clubs, game looks a good prospect.
West starts by leading ♠8.
This is a disappointing sign, as we had expected to find the king with her.
The finesse loses and East switches to ♣8.
Declarer contributes the ten which loses to the jack.
West continues with ♣A, East playing the ♣4. West then plays another club.
You've lost the first three tricks and it looks like East will be ruffing clubs, so what do you do next?

You need to ruff in dummy. East has the majority of the trumps and you are missing jack and ten, so it will have to be the king of trumps.
Lets draw a round of trumps next.
Good news at last! West drops the ten of hearts.
I think we might have a plan!
West is placed with 6 clubs, 4 or 5 rubbish spades, 1 heart and 1 or 2 diamonds. So we can work out East's hand.
Over to the top diamonds, then ruff out East's queen.
Back to dummy with the ♠A and play ♥9. If East covers, your hand is good. If East ducks, just keep playing diamonds until you capture her remaining trumps.
