July Hand of the Month - from Summer Charity Sims 08/07/26
We are continuing the theme of Slam Bidding this month.
A lot of people sat East opened with 1♣ but at our table he bid 2♣ which is a game forcing bid.
The expert commentary agreed that it is surely worth a 2♣ opening - see Ecats site for details.

Many people like to bid 2♦ as a relay these days but we prefer to give a positive response if we can, so West bid 2♠.
East rebid clubs (remember the sequence is still forcing to game) and West shows his second suit - Hearts.
You expect some sort of slam between these two hands. So the big hand agrees Hearts (for now) by asking for aces.
West response shows just one ace. He probably has ♠ AK at least for his earlier positive reply. So 6♥ (or 6♣) looks a good bet.
Note that if West had responded 5♠ showing 2 aces and the queen of trumps (Roman Key Card Blackwood) then 7NT would be a lay-down.
Well you can't have a grand slam every month! |
