June Hand of the Month - from RealBridge 24/06/26
You are sat East. When partner opens 1♠ you get excited and think that there's probably a slam on here. But how to bid it?
It's probably best to start with a natural response of 2♥.
West re-bids spades, showing a 5-card suit.
How do you proceed?

Start with a Blackwood enquiry.
This pair are using Roman Key Card Blackwood. East got a reply of 5♠. This shows two key cards and the queen of trumps.
So West has shown a 5-card spade suit including the king-queen, and the ace of diamonds.
Count the tricks!
It looks like 5 spades, 5 hearts, plus ♦A and ♣A. But you can also ruff a diamond in dummy for one more trick. That makes 13 tricks.
This pair bid a grand slam in spades for a top on the night as other pairs stopped in 6♠.
And the play?
When declarer shows up with ♠ J, 10♥ and K♦ its a claim at trick 1. (Don't even think about chancing the club finesse!)
What about 7NT, I hear you say?
If East continues with a 5NT enquiry (which asks about kings), West would bid 6♦ which shows ♦ K in their system.
You don't need the diamond ruff, so East could then bid 7NT. |
