YC Keith Loveys Individual winner 2017—David Newman (right) holding the fabled memorial tankard

Twenty‑four of us played in The Keith Loveys Memorial Individual which was won by David Newman (pictured with club manager Nick  Sandqvist), with David Muller a close second. (Results here.)

The Quiz, devised by Simon Cearns, was enjoyable, attended by about 20 of us, and was won by the team of Mahmoud Sadek, David Muller, David Hull, Mike Eden, and Carrie Eden won most.

The Speedball, which saw six tables of well‑fed participants (my salt beef went down well, but for me Chris Duckworth's crème brûlée and meringues were the yummiest), was won by Ingar Hansen and Peter Taylor.

A shame that more members were unable to attend—we'd changed the date so as not to clash with Scarborough.

We are thinking of hosting the club's Xmas party on Saturday 16 December—maybe quiz and IMPs duplicate. What do members think about this date? (You can use the Young Chelsea facebook page to post your opinion or you can email the club.)

This new event was held over the weekend of 16 & 17 September 2017. The Young Chelsea Ladies Swiss Teams was the brainchild of club committee member Paula Leslie, who worked tirelessly to make the event a success. She induced a total of 16 teams, many from abroad, to enter the event, found some sponsorship for the junior teams' entry fees, and recruited popular tournament director Jonathan Lillycrop to run the event.

At the end, after ten rounds, the winning team on 134 VPs, picking up a £1,200 prize was The Weak Link (Gilly Clench, Lizzie Godfrey, Sally Brock, Karen McCallum).

Listings of detailed results and cross IMPs in EBUScore format are available. More pictures are posted on the Young Chelsea facebook group.

YC Autumn Ladder 2017 winner Sarah Bell and committee member Mike Eden
YC Autumn Ladder 2017 winner Sarah Bell and committee member Mike Eden

The Autumn 2017 ladder finished on Friday 15 December, having run for 42 sessions, taking into account scores from the regular Monday, Wednesday and Friday duplicates.

Ranking is by average of the ten best scores with four different partners. (Friday IMP scores are converted to percentages for ladder purposes; the Cross‑IMPs page explains how.)

The prize fund was £500. Congratulations to the winner on 58.73%, Sarah Bell, pictured receiving first prize of £250 from committee member Mike Eden.

The remaining two prizes also went to relatively young players. In second place on 57.78%, and getting a prize of £150, was Shahzaad Natt. In third place on 57.65% and getting £100, was Alexandra Birchall.

Although there was a prize on offer for the highest placed student, in the event none played enough games to qualify. (The moral for students in future is just to turn up.)
