| Bridgemate Protocols and Etiquette |
The objective of this is to allow for scores to be accurately recorded and results swiftly made available to all members.
It is standard for North to use the Bridgemate (BM), but by agreement between North and South there is no problem if South uses the BM.
East is the standard opposition player who checks the scores, but it could be West.
- Nothing should be entered on the BMs until the scorer says ready.
- North is responsible for ensuring that the EBU numbers (or club numbers if preferred) are entered on the BM.
- All should check that the names on the BM correspond with their pair’s names before play commences.
- North is then responsible for ensuring that the table number is correct and the correct boards are collected from the boards table and ready to play.
- North has this responsibility for each round. At the beginning of each round North should check that the BM reflects the new opposition players
- North is responsible for ensuring that the correct Boards are being played each round, and that the orientation is correct.
- For each hand, North is responsible for entering the contract, who is playing it (N/E/S/W) and the lead.
- Once the play is completed N/S should agree with E/W the result and the number of tricks taken by each pair BEFORE the cards are cleared from in front of each player (so that checks can be made if there is any disagreement).
- Once the tricks have been agreed, North should enter the score on to the BM and then offer it to East to ‘accept’.
- East should look carefully at the result on the BM, placing the machine on the table where all players can see the result. Once everyone is happy with the result ‘accept’ (OK) can be pressed by East once only and the BM returned to North.
- North may look on the BM at the scores achieved on other tables for that hand, offering this to the other players to see. Only after this should North press for the next hand.
- If the score is entered incorrectly, the Scorer must be alerted immediately. Sometimes when looking at previous results on the BM one can spot an error, or potential error and that is when the scorer MUST be alerted.
- Please remember that it makes the scorers job, and the swift publishing of the evening’s results far easier if any adjustments have to be made before the next round is commenced.
- Only in exceptional circumstances will a score be altered when a player comes and asks the scorer to look at a hand at the end of an evening where they have ‘accepted’ an incorrect score during the evening’s play and not reported it earlier. Additionally N/S/E/W will all need to agree any score where an adjustment is requested.
- Once the final hand has been completed North may press the OK button to find the provisional evening’s score on the BM, but must offer sight of this to all the players.
- At the end of the evening please return the BM to the table alongside the scorers table.
