Playing on RealBridge
Warrington Bridge Club offers on-line bridge using the popular platform RealBridge. It's the nearest thing to face-to-face bridge you can get, without actually being in the same room as the other players round your table. It incorporates video and voice, so the 4 players can see and talk to each other. If you are uncomfortable with using the video feature, you can block your camera function and use voice only, though things tend to work far better when we can see each other.
For those who have not tried it before, the RealBridge website offers excellent guidance, a blow by blow description of the features of RealBridge and how to use them. It is well worth your time to go and have a look. Go to the RealBridge website, and click on Players, Player Guide. It is all beautifully and clearly presented, with screenshot illustrations.
Before you play on RealBridge for the first time (and it's a good idea to do this well in advance):
- Check your device capability for RealBridge: visit here: https://play.realbridge.online/camera.html. Here is a quick summary of which devices and browsers will work with RealBridge: RealBridge Devices and Browsers. You only need to do this once, but you can check your device capability anytime with this link. If you are using a tablet or an iPad, the system will use your built-in camera and microphone. If you are using a PC or laptop, you will need to use the webcam function for the video to work- most modern PC's and laptops have that built in. If you find you are not able to use your camera you can still log in and play, although it's not ideal. However, you will need to be able to speak to and hear the other players at your table, because, for example, the process of alerting and explaining bids works just the same as in face-to-face bridge.
- Make sure you know your EBU number, as you will need to use it as your ID when logging on to play. If you don't know it, you can find it in the Member List in the Member Area of the website. If you’ve never logged in before, or have forgotten your password, you will find instructions on the page about what to do. If you are really stuck, you can email for help to the Club email address Club email
To play in a RealBridge Session:
Log in by clicking on the RealBridge link at the top right of the Warrington Bridge Club website Home Page, at least 10 minutes before the session starts. Please note that if you log in less than 5 mins before a session, you might not be guaranteed a place.
By all means bookmark the Club’s Home Page, but please don’t bookmark the ‘click here’ link: that won't work, because the link changes every session.
Type in your real name. Please type it carefully, as this is the way it will appear in the results, for example Joe Bloggs (not joebloggs, JOEBLOGGS, joe bloggs, Joe, joe123, etc). If you don't do this properly, you will create a lot of extra work for the administrator, who then has to engage in a time-consuming process to edit the results file.
Under ID Number – enter your EBU Number.
Please sit at an available table. It really doesn’t matter if you sit N/S or E/W. If your partner is already seated, please sit opposite them.
You’ll notice the bidding box looks familiar, and you and your partner should alert as playing in a normal club. There are various buttons that you’ll see on the bottom right-hand side corner, which are generally self-explanatory. You can try them out the first time you play, or have a look at this Help guide: RealBridge Help.
The Tournament Director moves you on at the end of each round, and as in a normal club, as long as you are near finishing, you’ll be allowed to. However, sometimes when you move, you may appear to be on a sit-out table but in fact at a ‘limbo table’ and are just waiting for the pair in front to finish off. There may be a sit-out table, but we’ll notify you of that at the start of the session.
You will be able to see the scores while you play, and the results will be uploaded to the websites as normal.
Background noise can be distracting when you’re playing, so please try to keep this to a minimum. For example, switch your phone to silent, don’t have the dishwasher/washing machine on if they’re close to where you play. It’s a good idea to practice muting/unmuting your microphone, as you might need to do this quickly – sometimes noise can crop up outside your control, as you will be playing in your home environment.
Enjoy your bridge! The ethos of the Club is friendly bridge. If a problem arises, please call the TD (Tournament Director).
PLEASE NOTE - When you finish a session on RealBridge, clicking on “Leave” merely lets you leave the table - it doesn’t log you off, but places you in the RealBridge session “lobby”. You must close the tab on your browser. This is usually obvious for PC users, but might be less obvious if you’re on a iPad.
