MERSEYSIDE & CHESHIRE BRIDGE ASSOCIATION EVENTS
The Waterworth Cup (the County's annual pairs championship), will be held on BBO on Friday 16th January 2026, starting at 17.30. It is intended that the event will be run as an all-play-all Howell competition of around 36-39 boards using standard pairs scoring, with a mid-session break of 20 minutes. The precise format will be determined by the number of entries received and the limitations of BBO. Full details and the online registration form to enter can be found on the county website, link below.
As always, green points are awarded to the top half of the field. The top three eligible pairs also get the chance to represent the county in the national pairs championship for the Corwen Trophy in May.
The Deva Bridge Club is holding its annual EBU licensed Blue Pointed event, The Chester Congress, on Saturday & Sunday 24th & 25th January. Venue: Deva Bridge Club, Village Road, Christleton, Chester, CH3 7AS. Play starts at 11am both days. Saturday is a Swiss Pairs competition for the Capel Cups. Sunday is a Swiss Teams competition for the Latham Knox Trophy.
Cash & other prizes to value of 20-25% of entrance fees. Entrance fees (per player): £17.50 pairs, £17.50 teams, £35 full congress
There is a refreshment break on both days, when a two course meal is available for a cost of £17.00 (menu choices on website / must be booked in advance on website or by email). Alternatively you can bring your own food. Free coffee/tea, other drinks available for purchase (wine, beer, soft drinks).
Entry form is on DEVA website (http://www.devabridgeclub.co.uk/). Entries will be acknowledged by email.
The Liverpool Open Pairs will take place on Sunday March 29th at Liverpool Bridge Club. The format will be 24-28 boards with a break for refreshments at half time.
The event will also act as the qualifier for the EBU 9 High Corwen - the 3 best place 9-High pairs (9 high means players with an NGS grading of 9 or below- ie most of us ordinary club players) will be invited to represent the county in that event.

Charity Donations 2025
A big thank you to all our members who supported our Charity/Improvers evenings during 2025. We held 6 of them, and were delighted with the big turn-out. Our chosen charity for 2025 was the WALTON LEA PARTNERSHIP, a wonderful local charity that provides supported learning, training and work experience activities for young people and adults with learning disabilities, in Warrington and surrounding areas. The photo shows Ashok Kalia (second from the left), Walton Lea's Director of Operations, who came along to the Club for a presentation of our cheque. He expressed his gratitude for our donation, and described to us the huge difference it makes to the lives of the local families which they support.
Although the cheque was for £1485, we since held our final charity evening for 2025, and donated a further £330, bringing our total donation for the year to £1835. So by supporting Warrington Bridge Club, you're not only enjoying the bridge playing and social aspects of our great game of bridge, you are helping our local community in Warrington.

LEARNING BRIDGE
Fancy learning to play bridge? Bridge is a great social game. You'll make new friends, improve your memory, and have fun.
Perhaps you already know how to play, but want to improve, or to get back into it? Click HERE to find out how.
OUR NEW SEASON OF 2025/26 COURSES (BEGINNERS, IMPROVERS, AND INTERMEDIATES) STARTED ON 11 SEPTEMBER 2025. But it's not too late to join.
....and if learning face-to face doesn't work for you, here's a great resource, totally free, for learning bridge on line, designed for people new to the game:
It’s a series of You Tube videos created by expert bridge player and teacher John Stell. Start off by clicking HERE , which will explain how to access the 52 videos.
John has now also added a short course on how to play two over one: HERE
Many people play online, and this system is very popular on sites such as BBO, INTO Bridge and RealBridge.
This is a useful resource for club members to brush up on various topics that maybe they don't have a full grasp of. The course would normally cost over £260 - but here it’s free, with no strings attached. The only thing John asks is if you like it, you spread the word, and subscribe to his YouTube channel.
Another great option for learning on-line is available from Jack Stocken at Yorkshire Bridge
You can even start for free! You can watch Jack's series of 9 introductory lessons; Click HERE
And if you're already a bridge player, whether or not you'd like to attend classes, you will be made most welcome at any of Warrington Bridge Club playing sessions. We run both face to face and on-line bridge sessions, mostly Duplicate Pairs. You can always find up-to-date details; click here for our website calendar.
