CLUB NEWS - BRIDGE + BREW
CLUB NEWS - BRIDGE + BREW

NEW PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS & EXISTING MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. YOU DO NOT NEED A PARTNER.

We start on Thursdays at 10.00 a.m. for two & a half hours approximately, finishing at 12.30 p.m.

Last time, we looked at discards, and what signals they could convey. Next Thursday, we will be looking at defence to your opponents contract, and specifically, this starts with the opening lead.

This relaxed & laid back session is predominantly aimed at people who want to learn the basic information about bridge, and to explore a bit further into the game. Our basic session can include :-

  • Playing up to eight hands, possibly more on some specific occasions. These will all be pre-dealt hands that have not been played before, and so will all be new, even to myself. After playing a hand, you can have a chat at the table about these hands, if you so desire, unless you are specifically requested not to, in the case of competitions.
  • There will definitely be a break around the half - time  mark, for a cuppa & a biscuit. The kettle is always boiled when you arrive, so you can grab a cuppa then as well.
  • Normally we will have a topic to talk about - this usually changes every week!
  • Usually we encompass at least one sample hand - just to illustrate a particular point, but not always on our topic.
  • Sometimes, we can have a little chat about what is going on at the Club.

We want this session to be a fun & very relaxed session, and a place to learn about the world of Bridge, as well as card play & defence - two absolute basics of playing Bridge. We would also encourage you to talk & discuss Bridge related problems, and if you do not fully understand something, PLEASE ask & we will try and answer your query, even if it is not straight away.

Please note that this session is to be charged at the same rate as any of the other Wakefield Bridge Club's sessions. We look forward to the journey..............

JUST ANOTHER HAND? - JANUARY 2026 - No 65
JUST ANOTHER HAND? - JANUARY 2026 - No 65

Here is a hand, played at the Club, as part of the EBU Winter Simulated Pairs Competition.

East opens, based on the Rule of Twenty, with 1 , with quite an attractive aceless hand, to which South & West pass. North with a big hand, has got three options:-

  • A) Bid Clubs - just a bad option, which could end up with you in a poor scoring contract.
  • B) Bid 2 NT - which is probably what the good players will bid, showing 19 - 20 HCP's (what happens if South takes that as both majors?) or
  • C) Double - a bid which shows at least 16 HCP's, asking their partner to bid. South with 10 HCP's, without a 5 card suit and holding a  stop, bids 1NT. North has now got an easy raise to 3NT, but gives no thought to a slam contract, as East has got at least opening HCP's, or so North thinks.

With the opening lead of 6  from West, all seems to be clear to declarer. North / South have 29 HCP's between them, which should mean that all the other HCP's are with East. This now means that West has absolutely nothing. As East will in all probability have five  for their opening bid, the opening lead is probably a singleton. South now realises that putting in the Q  is a waste of time, so plays low from both hands, when East plays 10 . This effectively paralyses the  suit, as East cannot attack this suit profitably. East eventually comes up with the best card that they can play, the Q , which runs around to the A  in dummy. Knowing that all the HCP's are in East, declarer can now play a small ♠ towards their Q, and so promote Q ♠ into an extra trick, eventually. East now on lead again, after winning with the K ♠, has again got a problem, but solves it by playing J , taking away K  and dropping 10  in dummy.

Declarer now plays A ♠, followed by another ♠ to the Q. How fortunate, the 7 ♠ has now become a winner, so it is played and declarer discards a  from dummy, therefore giving up any hope of any extra tricks in that suit. Declarer believes that they should be able to take all the rest of the tricks, but when he starts playing the ♣ suit, they now discover the bad split in the suit. Because West has never discarded a ♣, they now prevent the ♣ suit from running. Armed with this information, declarer tries another possibility. Perhaps, both defenders discard all of their  cards, or another chance is that East holds both the winners in  & , and can be legitimately squeezed. However, both defenders are awake, as East discards the losing  and small  on the ♣ cards played from dummy, and West just plays small, whilst following the suit. It comes down to the last two cards, with dummy holding Q  & 7 ♣. Declarer holds A  & 6 . East holds K & J  and  West holds 9 ♣ & 9 . When Q  is played from dummy, West discards 9 ♣, so picking up the final trick, with their  card.

Well done West! who held a Yarborough, but kept their concentration, to be able to make a difference at the end. Not giving a trick away is quite valuable here.

If North had been declarer here, it would seem that the obvious lead here is J . This eventually will allow declarer to take 3no  tricks, 2no  tricks, 1no ♠ trick or possibly 2no & 5no ♣ tricks (if West is not awake or 4no  if they are awake). There are various combination of ways to achieve this, but 11no tricks is the best that can be obtained. If only I could follow what I preach, when bringing in only 9no tricks!

CLUB DIARY - FUN DAY 3RD JANUARY 2026
CLUB DIARY - FUN DAY 3RD JANUARY 2026

The  Fun Day, took place on Saturday 3rd January 2026. The results are now out (see them on this web-site under "Results"), and the total monies raised was over £1500.00, which is phenomenal.

Thanks also go to everyone involved in making this event happen, in whatever capacity.

As has been decided recently, the monies raised are going to be shared between Wakefield Hospice & another small mental health charity - Memory Action Group.

We look forward to the next Fun Day, with the assumption that it will be in early June 2026.

CLUB DIARY - YORKSHIRE 9 HIGH PAIRS
CLUB DIARY - YORKSHIRE 9 HIGH PAIRS

Here we showed you an opportunity for all aspiring partnerships who qualified (this event was for any partnership were the two players were on NGS band 9 or less), to apply to be a part of a national event, the EBU Corwen 9 High Trophy. Our county held their qualifying tournament on Sunday 11th January at York Bridge Club.

This was your chance to take your Bridge to a new level, without having to play against any experts.

There were three pairs taking part in the event, with the winners progressing to a national on-line final on 30th May. The results are now out, and our best pairing finished sixth, out of sixteen pairs. We thank them all for representing our Bridge Club, and hope that they all had an enjoyable experience.

The game of Bridge is played by all ages and abilities in schools, universities, bridge clubs, social groups & individual houses all around the world, so we at Wakefield Bridge Club, are always looking to expand our fantastic game to more of the residents in our locality, whatever your age, so that you all can discover its pleasures.

We are a thriving Bridge Club with approximately 170 members, but we always welcome new members to our friendly group. We would be extremely pleased to see you, so come along and take the plunge, and find out if the game of Bridge is for you.

This game of Bridge has been proven to be excellent for your mental health, by making the maximum use of your brain's aptitude and abilities. It is a mentally challenging form of entertainment, offering intellectual and social stimulation on a routine basis. Bridge's intricacies should make it particularly appealing for those who want to sharpen their acuity whilst performing mental gymnastics. In detailed research of Bridge Players v Non - Bridge Players in the age category 55 - 90, that study indicated that Bridge players outperformed non players in terms of memory & reasoning. Listening, etiquette, concentration, dealing with winning & losing along with many other social skills, can be enhanced by playing Bridge.

All you have to do is take the first step - TRUST US - we will try our best to help you take it from there.

  • If you have tried us and like what you see, and keep returning, you can expect to be asked to become a member of our Bridge Club.

COME AND JOIN US - HOW TO FIND WHERE WE ARE
COME AND JOIN US - HOW TO FIND WHERE WE ARE

Wakefield Bridge Club.

The club was founded in 1953 (you can find the unbroken history of the club under "CLUB HISTORY" in the "MENU").

In 2021, we relocated to our new home in Thornes Park.  We have taken part of the ground floor of the former school/college, which is now a part of the Penny Appeal Campus. We have two Bridge rooms, with a small kitchen and separate ladies and gents toilets. The aerial view (shown above) shows the former college/Penny Appeal buildings at the top left, and the main car park. The thin grey line running through the trees, from the bottom right of the photograph, marks the line of the road up from the park entrance on Horbury Road, the A642. This is the only road entrance for vehicles, to the Car Park & Bridge Club, as all the other entrances have bollards in the roadways to prevent further access, or are dead ends.

For detailed guidance on finding us please refer to the "MENU", look for the section which is labelled "HOW TO FIND US AT WBC" (WAKEFIELD BRIDGE CLUB) and then select either of the two alternatives of "Map/Photo directions", or "Written directions" to WBC (WAKEFIELD BRIDGE CLUB).(You will need to rotate the map/photo pictures - use the swivel icon on the page, please).

If you are using satellite navigation to direct you to the club, please ensure that you approach from the A642, Horbury Road, Wakefield, which is the North entrance to the three parks that make up Thornes Park. Reliance on your car's satellite navigation, will end up with you at one of the wrong entrances to the parks, with no access through. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Please use the assistance of Google Maps, which will help greatly or we recommend the use the downloadable what3words app, which divides the whole of the earth into 3m x 3m squares, and so pinpoints exact locations.

The post code of the club is WF2 8QZ; the what3words address of the club room entrance is flank.inspector.waving; the what3words /// address of the car park entrance is kind.brass.exchanges(Download the what3words app which can be accessed via your smartphone, for an accurate location of where we are). We recommend this course of action.

When you are walking up from the main car park, please look out for for the signage on the green fencing, directing you to walk around the building to your left, to locate the entrance to the Bridge Club, when is now the only access that we have.

WHEN THEY HAPPEN - OUR PLAYING SESSIONS DESCRIBED
WHEN THEY HAPPEN - OUR PLAYING SESSIONS DESCRIBED

Forthcoming Events are always listed in the "MENU" under "CALENDAR". Alternatively, you can pick up one of our free A5 calendars, from the Bridge Club.

PLEASE PLAN TO ALWAYS ARRIVE AT LEAST 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE START OF ANY OF OUR SESSIONS.

This is to enable us to select the correct type of game, based on the numbers present. If you turn up late, this delays this selection, and therefore the start of the session. Turning up late may mean that we have started without you, and you will be going home without playing. It also means that all those who turned up in plenty of time, will NOT finish on time. It is in your hands to make this NOT happen! Local Masterpoints & NGS gradings are available on all our sessions, except where indicated.

Monday Mornings -  The second step - We offer a gentle, regular session of Bridge, that should provide an introduction into meeting other members of WBC, as well as introducing you into the mechanics of a Bridge session. If you would like to be involved simply turn up on the day.  A host may not be available.

Monday Evenings - These have a competitive atmosphere. Pairs of visitors are always welcome, but if you need a partner, please place an advert on Pianola, on Partner Finder. Occasional Monday evenings are marked as Teams Events, and then advance registration is required - see the calendar (shown in the "MENU" under "CALENDAR" for details.

Tuesday Mornings - The improver step. A teaching session for improvers, and existing members with some experience of the game. We replay interesting (random, not prepared) hands from a previous session (usually Thursday's), and discuss teaching points as they come up, but we don't always agree. Open to all members, this is an excellent opportunity to think and talk a little more deeply about your bridge. NO Master Points or NGS grading movement is given.

Tuesday Evenings - The atmosphere is a little more relaxed, and the number of boards played is limited. A host may not be available.

Thursday Morning - The first step. A teaching session for individual beginners and individual improvers. This is your chance to play some new & unseen hands of bridge, with no expectations or time limits. We will be talking about a host of different Bridge related topics, with examples shown & explained (may be on a different subject).  NO Master Points or NGS grading movement is given.

Thursday EveningsThese have an even more competitive atmosphere. Pairs of visitors are always welcome, but if you need a partner, please place an advert on Pianola, on Partner Finder. Very occasionally, there are Teams Events (see Monday evenings above for the protocol).

Friday Mornings - This session aims to be relaxed in character, but it is competitive, and players of all grades are welcome. A host may not be available.

Need to know :

  • Monday Morning - Level ♣/♦ - start 10.00, finish about 12.30 / 13.00 - play about 14 - 16 boards.
  • Monday Evening Level ♥ - start 19.00, finish about 22.30 - play about 27 boards.

  • Levels (in our opinion), equate approximately to difficulty of each of our sessions (suits in bridge ranking order).

CLUB NEWS - WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW!
CLUB NEWS - WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW!

You all may not be aware, of what we have available in our Club, or what we have been doing inside our Club :-

  • We have implemented the requirements to comply with food hygiene regulations, with a new sink & an insect collector in the kitchen.
  • We have implemented a Model Diversity, Inclusion & Equality Policy for our Club
  • We have introduced extra individual lighting, for those in our membership requiring this help. There are two lights now available to be used. Just ask.................
  • We have brand new coasters in the Club, with Bridge tips shown in them. How many are there?

We are currently working very hard to improve our accessibility, for all members of our population, who wish to play Bridge, either now, or in the future. This is a long term issue, and it is not going to go away.

  • We are currently looking at high definition cards, the problem at present is their suitability to our dealing machines, but we may have a solution.
  • We have sanctioned to change our current Bridgemates 2 to the Brand New Bridgemates 3 scoring system. This we expect to see in March / April 2026.
  • We will start to look at a hearing loop to suit our Bridge Rooms. Will this make the noise less between hands?

We are currently actively pursuing getting the Air con / Heater in the ceiling of the smaller room, either fixed or replaced. We have sanctioned the expense of a full replacement, but whilst the possibility of a simple fix solving the problem, it would be foolish of our responsibilities, to expend monies, which may prove to be unnecessary.

Things are happening all around! The fact that YCBA wishes to bring prestige competitions to our venue, speaks a lot about what we are trying to create in our Club. Look at our calendar for 2026 for proof.........

There may be other ideas that you may have, or we, your committee have, to make things nicer & easier to play Bridge at Wakefield Bridge Club. Please watch this space.........

CLUB NEWS - THE NICKO 2025- 2026
CLUB NEWS - THE NICKO 2025- 2026

The NICKO (National Inter - Club Knock Out) event, is an England wide team competition, which takes place over the course of a calendar year. The first round has to be completed by December 9th this year, with the eventual final to be completed by 8th November  2026.

The matches can be played F2F or on-line, to suit both teams. The entries are closed now with 79 teams taking part (some clubs have multiple teams), with 17 teams having a bye into the next round. There are 5 rounds, before the quarter finals, semi finals and finally a final.

For all losers in the first or second round of this competition, they are automatically entered into the Plate event, which runs alongside the main event, but only has 3 rounds + the finals.

We at Wakefield have one team entered comprising :-

  • Allan Clarke
  • Adrian Dubel
  • Martin Fenton
  • Karen Lemm

They have played in the first round already, defeating a team from Bramhall & Cheadle Hulme Bridge Centre (Lancashire) 47 - 39. Some of our members, who play in the Thursday Night session, will recognise our member Dave Moules, who played for the opposition.

In the next round, which is to be played by 25th January 2026, our team has got a bye. We will keep abreast of our team's further progress....................

CLUB DIARY - CAFE BRIDGE
CLUB DIARY - CAFE BRIDGE

Here was something just a little bit different. The YCBA held a Cafe Bridge event in Wetherby, on 26th August 2025. This is a type of Bridge which is popular in Scotland, London & the South East, and has got a foothold in Yorkshire, in Ripon , where it has been played for about three years. But it could spread further, with your help & assistance , and you were cordially invited to not only help a well known charity, but to try out something a little bit different. This is something that I have tried to get going in Wakefield, as yet with no success, in finding a venue.

The pilot scheme was a success, and had twenty tables competing, although there was nobody brave enough from our Club to participate. The YCBA are actively looking for more venues to host this type of event in the future.................

CLUB DIARY - FUTURE EBU BRITISH SIMS PAIRS EVENTS 2026
CLUB DIARY - FUTURE EBU BRITISH SIMS PAIRS EVENTS 2026

We have started to get involved playing in the EBU Seasonal Sims Pairs events, which take place approximately every three months. This gives us all an opportunity to measure ourselves up against other bridge clubs & members from around the country. As well as our Club results, there will also be National results for each day, from every Club that participated on that particular day.

Usually, over the course of four days (Monday - Thursday), the same hands are played up & down the country - (they are different boards each day). We usually play on a Thursday, and the cost of each of these events is normally £3.00 + our normal session charge, with the £3.00 going to the EBU charity EBED (English Bridge Education & Development), which funds the development of youth players in the game.

The 2026 dates for the British (Seasonal) Sims Pairs events are :-

  1. Spring on Thursday 16th April. We have entered this event.
  2. Summer on Thursday 23rd July.
  3. Autumn on Thursday 8th October.

Please await a notice appearing on the notice board, nearer the date, as a reminder............................

We have competed in :-

  1. Winter on Thursday 15th January.

Our winners on the night, had their result adjusted, so that they actually finished well down the order. Never mind, there is always next time....................

CLUB NEWS - YCBA 6 HIGH PAIRS - 4TH JULY 2026
CLUB NEWS - YCBA 6 HIGH PAIRS - 4TH JULY 2026

The very, very early details of a YCBA competition, which attract the attention of more than 50% of our members, are becoming available.

The YCBA Six High Pairs Competition is to take place again, after its first outing in 2025 @ Wetherby. In 2026, this competition is planned to take place in two locations. You will have a choice of playing at either Huddersfield Bridge Club, or at Wetherby Bridge Club on Saturday 4th July, and it will be your choice of where to play, we hope. The locations will run the same set of boards, at the same time, and the belief is that the results can be linked together to produce one result.

This competition is for all of our members who have achieved a maximum NGS band of 6 or less. Nobody with a NGS band of 7 or above is eligible, so no expert or experienced players are allowed to participate.

There are no further details at present, but further information will be available a lot nearer the time........

CLUB DIARY - BRIDGE BREAK 16TH - 20TH NOVEMBER

There will be a full breakfast on offer along with a choice of three course evening meals (Lunch is your responsibility). There will be a Bridge session every evening, with an optional bridge session and / or seminar in the morning. Every afternoon is your chance to visit anywhere that you choose, or stay in the hotel, as you desire. You can e-mail "john57dalton@gmail.com" for further details, if this piques your interest.

The picture shows the view northwards from the hotel, taken last year.
