Geraldine O'Flynn Team of Four (Handicap) - January 17th and 24th |
The Geraldine O'Flynn T/4 Handicap Competition, a two session event, will take place over the next two weeks, i.e. Jan 17th and Jan 24th.
All teams have been assigned a handicap based on the player combinations that comprise each team.
Handicaps were mathematically calculated based on average player performance since October 10th, 2012. The handicaps take the form of Victory Points and will be added to the score of each team at the end of each session.
Although they come with no guarantee of accuracy, the handicaps have been calculated based on the actual performance of players covering the period October 10th 2012 to January 10th 2013. The team handicap is based on the average performance of the four players.
And next year we can use this year's actual team performance as the basis for next year's handicaps!

Turkey Competition - Handicap event |
A HANDICAP competition will be held on Thursday, 6th December, 2012. Handicaps for ALL members who have played since 11th October have been calculated based on average actual scores up to 29th November 2012. The handicap for EACH PLAYER has been calculated by subtracting their average score (percentage) from the notional average winning score of 62%.
For a pairs competition the handicaps of the two partners are added together and the resultant total is divided by two to give a 'partnership' handicap. The partnership handicap will be automatically added to your Gross Score for the event.
For Handicap events the winner will be the partnership with the highest score INCLUDING handicap.
PLEASE NOTE that handicaps will be updated on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
The winners will receive a voucher which can be recouped at a specific victualler for a turkey or any other type of meat.

Club T/4 - Updated scores |
Update #2
The scores for Teams 7 & 16 have been adjusted because of an issue with Board #17 in the direct match.
Please note that the correct total score for Team #16 is 113VPs as indicated on the Results Page and not 112VPs as shown on the Competition Page.
Players are reminded to be careful when replacing the cards in the board after a hand has been played so as not to cause the board to become 'switched' thus making it unplayable at the next and subsequent tables.
Click anywhere in this window to view the updated scores.

--------------------------------------------------
Update #1
Please note that the scores issued on Thursday night have been amended to take account of the fact that Board# 19 was mis-boarded and consequently the results for that Board had to be scrapped in respect of that match.

Brenda Feely - Update |
 Update, 29th November
Brenda has now been re-located to Unit 4, Merlin Park Hospital, Galway where she is making steady progress with her recovery.
==============================================================
Brenda took a tumble at the Galway Bridge Centre just prior to the last round of the first session of the Ryder Cup on Thursday, 15th November, 2012. She was attended to by several club members, in particular Geraldine Carroll, before being transferred by ambulance service to University Hospital Galway.
Friday, 16th November. I called the hospital and was advised that Brenda is in fine spirits and making a good recovery from her unfortunate accident.
All her friends at the Tribes Bridge Club wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming her back to the club ASAP.

Bridge Lessons by Andrew Robson - Signal & Discard |
I recently came across a series of books by Andrew Robson, a World Individual Silver Medallist and Former World and European Champion) and also author of the highly acclaimed daily Bridge column in the London Times as well as proprietor of a very successful Bridge School/Club in London which boasts in excess of 2,000 members!
This document contains an extract of the index of topics covered in one of these books (Signal & Discard) as well as a sample of two pages which illustrate the approach used by the author. Click anywhere in this window to view the short document with sample pages.
Andrew Robson is renowned for his teaching ability (as well as his undoubted prowess as a player) and I was very impressed with the content and style of presentation with which he handles the various topics covered.
At present there are circa 12 books in this series, each one of approximately 25 pages and covering 40-50 hands, related to a particular theme. The various hands illustrate an aspect of bidding, defence or declarer play related to the theme of the particular book.
Titles include:
Bidding as Opener
Responder and Fourth Suit Forcing
Stayman & Transfer
Double
Overcall
Hand Evaluation & The Losing Trick Count
Opening lead
Defence
Signal & Discard
Declaring Notrump Contracts
Endplay & Squeeze
If there is sufficient interest from members I would be prepared to arrange purchase and delivery. Cost would be approximately €7 per title, including shipping. These titles are not currently available via the CBAI shop.

Tribes Bridge Club Train Trip to Dublin |
On Thursday, 7th March 2013, 26 members of the Tribes Bridge Club undertook a return train trip to Dublin. A T/4 bridge competition was played on both train journeys...18 boards on outward leg and 15 boards on return leg.
Upon arrival at Hesuton Station in Dublin the party made its way to the Natural Museum of Culture and History which is located in the former Collins Barracks, a short walk from the station or a single stop for Luas users. After a lunch in 'Brambles' Cafe on the site of the museum most members toured the various exhibitions / displays whereas a handful went on a shopping tour in Dublin City!
The return train trip saw members arrived back in Galway at 18.50hrs whereupon several proceeded to the Galway Bridge Centre for the regular club game.
Click anywhere in this window to access a PhotoGallery of the trip in a separate window in your browser. Close the Tab/Window when finished viewing the photos.
