The West's Awake - thanks to members of Tribes Bridge Club!
The West's Awake - thanks to members of Tribes Bridge Club!

The Western Region scored a notable double recently in Athlone when teams won The Kelburne Cup and The Bankers Trophy.

Tribes Bridge Club Members Enda Glynn, Paul Scannell and Rory Timlin won the major event (Kelburne Cup) with a dramatic overhaul of the long-time leaders in the last round.

And in strikingly similar fashion Bill Cunniffe, Michael O'Gara and Deirdre Quin also vaulted into the top spot on the last round of the Bankers Trophy!

And in another fine performance, club members Marion Coy and Deirdre McCoy finished 11th (of 27) and arrowly missed out on winning the Best A2 prize in the Bankers Trophy

And, as a consequence of theses two wins, the Western Region was also presented with the Marie Cummins Trophy which is awarded to the best performing region in all three competitions (Kelburne, Bankers and Tierney Trophy (Intermeditae B).

Tribes Bridge Club - Trip to Westport - 11th - 13th February 2014
Tribes Bridge Club - Trip to Westport - 11th - 13th February 2014

Fifteen members of the Tribes Bridge Club participated in the recent trip to Westport. Members travelled (nine by mini-bus and others by car) to Westport on Tuesday 11th February and duly checked in to the 4* CastleCourt Hotel. A pre-dinner drink reception was held in Petie Joe's Bar at 18.30. This was followed by an excellent 4 course dinner in the Orchard Restaurant. The first of two 16 person individuals took place after dinner in the Ashleigh Suite. We are indebted to Ray & Helen Norton from Catlebar for travelling to Westport for the evening to make up the numbers. Kathleen Lovely fiished 1st. Lil Corless was 2nd and Bernie Forde was 3rd. Most members then adjourned to the bar fo a night-cap...or two...or three!

Wednesday morning saw members enjoy a hearty breakfast followed by a review and analysis of hands from the previous evening's competition. And members were introduced to Lebensohl, amongst a number of other conventions, which was quickly re-named as 'Lemon Sole' by a quick-witted member from Tuam!

The afternoon was 'free' and another pre-dinner drink was consumed by all at 18.30 and this was again followed by another excellent four course dinner. The second 'individual' competition took place in the Ashleigh Suite where local players Jackie Bolster (President Noth-West Region) and Frank Gillan made up the numbers. Jackie went on to finish a very clear 1st, followed by Peggy Fay in 2nd place and Mabel Cahill was 3rd. Another post-bridge drinking session took place in the bar albeit that everyone was in bed a lot earlier than the previous night!

Thursday morning saw everyone (or almost everyone) enjoy a good breakfast which was followed by a review and analysis of the hands that were played the previous evening.

And other than the return trip to Galway, that concluded the Tribes Bridge Club trip to Westport!  A wonderful, if short, 'away from home' session that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who travelled.

Christmas Party 2013 - What a night!

Although I might be biased, I think the Christmas Party 2013 was a great success. A 'Prosecco and Nibbles' reception upon arrival was followed by a short game of bridge. And then it was 'Dinner', once again courtesy of N2 Style Catering. Upon completion of the meal there was the presentation of prizes in respect of the Turkey Competition (12th December).  And then we had the surprise entertainment.... Frankie Gavin accompanied by George and singer Michelle Lally.

Thanks to the three Marys (Dolan, Healy, Scannell) for their help on the night as well as committee members (Geraldine Carroll, Ann Costello, Seamus MacMathuna) who assisted with the set-up in the afternoon and all who helped with the cleanup after the event!.

Link to photos (courtesy of Mary Healy) can be found here.

And bridge resumes on Thursday, 2nd January, 2014, at the usual time.
