Hand 2 taken from Tigers Duplicate Sunday 8th May 2022
This hand reached the optimum contract only 3 times, out of 9 attempts by the field.
WHY?
The bidding should be straightforward!
East NB (although 1S is understandable, a pass is better)
South - 1♣
West - 1NT (15-17)
North - Pass
East - to bid
Now comes the issue
If you use extended Stayman perfectly, then 2♣ followed by 3♣ after a 2♦ response shows 5-5 MJs
(if you don’t use Extended Stayman, then don’t use Stayman with this hand)
But
If you play transfers (and you should play this as a response to your partner's overcall of 1NT)
then transfer to spades (2♥ - Showing 5+ ♠ ) then rebid 3♥ after the completion,
(NB: - any 3 level bid now is Game forcing)
a) if your partner doesn’t raise spades and bids 3NT then he must have >>>>
b) 3 hearts so you bid 4♥ (if they had 4 hearts they would have raised the 3♥ bid to 4♥)
NB:- If playing natural methods then the bidding should go 1NT(overcall) - 3♠ (GF) - 3NT(No support) - 4♥ (Partner must have 3♥ + since they haven't raised the spades)
“Simples” as the Meerkat says....
