Children in Need Sim Pairs 2012 |
Well done to Summertown Bridge Club for raising a fantastic £1116 towards Children in Need at our Sim Pairs event on Monday 12 November!! Special thanks go to Sara Alden and her team of helpers who helped to make this event such a success. Thanks are also due to Maison Française and the EBU who waived their usual fees for the evening. Donations and pledges made to Children in Need are listed on the ECats website here.
From the bridge point of view, it is hearty congratulations to Ian and Trevor on a very fine win in the club with 66.54%. Jean and Maggie came second with an excellent 64.69% and Paul and Roger were third on 61.93%. Nationally Ian and Trevor are currently lying 23rd, but this will probably change as more results come in.

John Simpson |
We were very sorry to hear of the sad death this weekend of John Simpson. He was a longstanding member of Oxford Bridge Club, having played there and won various events with his wife in the late 60s. He used to give bridge lessons and in retirement played bridge at every opportunity and with great enthusiasm, despite health problems in recent years. He had become a regular at Summertown and will be greatly missed.
Wendy Claye, a member of Oxford BC has written an obituary of John. Click anywhere in this box to view it.

John Chavasse |
We were sad to hear of the death of John Chavasse, a longtime member of Summertown and Oxford Bridge Clubs and once a crossword compiler for the Oxford Times. The thanksgiving service took place at St Peter’s Church, Wolvercote on 22nd June.
People will have many memories of John, an eternally smiling and charming gentleman. His first visit to Summertown BC was dramatic. He fell down the stairs when leaving, bumped his head badly and ended up in A & E. Subsequently he used to do the scoring – by hand in those days! We had to wait till the following week to see how well or badly we had done.

NICKO competition |
Unfortunately the Summertown B team lost its 3rd round NICKO match against a Berks & Bucks team captained by Carol Mueller by 15 imps, in a match played on Friday 3 February. Summertown has another team still in the competition, so we wish them luck in their next match.
