| Jean Lucas Obituary |

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Lucas, just short of her 96th birthday. Jean was a keen bridge player and up until only a few years ago, regularly playing twice a week at our club and also at Stone Tennis Club. Her determination to overcome physical frailty whilst retaining a very keen mind was admirable. Jean was most upset to give up her car, but met the setback with her characteristic good humour and “not to be defeated” attitude.
She was always very good company and could tell wonderful stories about her time in politics. She was a conservative party agent for over 30 years, mostly in Wandsworth, and oversaw dramatic changes in the way things were run at constituency level. She wrote about this in a book called “Between the Thin Blue Lines” for which John Major wrote the foreword. She was very proud that Mr. Major continued to send her Christmas cards right up to present times. She also wrote another political book – The Wandsworth Story.
Jean later turned her hand to writing novels, one of which was “An Edinburgh Lady” based on the work of Isabell Liddel and Alexander Thomson”. The launch for this took place at our bridge club with her nephew and his wife, Rob and Helen Townsend, serving drinks. This book was followed by “The Pictou Triangle”. Jean never married but, during one conversation with her, she did reveal that her life had not been lived entirely without romance. It is fitting for such a lady that any further details were not forthcoming.
Jean moved to Stone to be with her family, who have been marvellous looking after her in the last few years and particularly in the last few weeks as her health deteriorated.
Cremation will take place at Stafford Crematorium on Wednesday 31st May at 1pm and will be followed by refreshments at Weston Hall. To help with catering, the family have requested that those intending to attend please let me know by phone or email. I will collate a list and forward to the family.

 The club has aquired a number of training DVDs by Bernard Magee (paid for by a donation to the club) which, in my 'umble opinion, are worth watching no matter how good you think you are!
They are free to borrow for up to 3 weeks, but you need to sign for them and leave a £10 refundable deposit.
