John Barratt
John Barratt as remembered by his bridge partner and friend

John was a great friend to all he met in the bridge world but only a few knew that he had many talents beyond bridge

He was drafted into Royal Engineers as soon as he was 18 rather they take his place at University

After training he was sent to Italy and basically crawled up Italy disabling land mines and showing great courage

He then went to Germany where he helped liberate fascist prisoners and served in the Battle of the Bulge  in the Ardennes and indeed was very pleased to show myself the sites when we visited Spa many years later.

After leaving the service he obtained his degree and served as a County Planning Officer for Staffordshire during the time of the Saddleworth Moors murders

In a Ted Heath clean out he was told over 40 years ago that he was not wanted, what a waste but then served as a Public Inspector as well as the head of the British Water Ways Board and was involved in many fascinating projects

John and his wife parted many years ago and he entered a partnership with Sheila Young and the pair became instrumental in running overseas bridge holidays in conjunction with world champion Paul Hackett

There are books that Jon wrote which describes much more than this short note can cover

The loss of a great friend and gentleman
