Robin's Quiz 13/7/20

Based on a bid of 2

The only time that a bid of 2 guarantees a 5 card suit (or more) is when a responder is making a bid over Partner's 1♠ i.e.

Example number Partner Opposition You
1. 1♠ Pass 2 5 card suit and 9 or so points +
2. 1♠ 2♣ 2 Again, 5 card suit or so, and 9 points+
3. 1♠ dble 2 Again, 5 card suit or so, and 9 points+ as above

So, a quiz.

  Partner Opposition You

Q 4   4 3   4 3   J 7 2   4   K 10 7   K Q 9 8 5
Partner Opposition You say that the Opposition bid 2♣
1♠ 2♣ ? does anything change, and what would you now bid?  hands (a) to (g)

Robins suggested Answers

Intervening opposition "Pass" Intervening Opposition bid 2♣
a) 1NT is the correct bid. Your hand is balanced, with points spread over the other 3 suits. It would be wrong to bid 2 with  such a poor suit. Double to show 4-4 or better in the red suits.

b) 1NT is the correct bid.  However, I prefer a bid of 2.  Your suit is worth showing, especially with a single spade. I also bid 2 over intervention of 2♣, although a double is probably just as good.

c) The bid is 2 It is forcing (for at least 1 round) and shows generally a minimum of 4+ diamonds. 2♦ whether direct or over a 2♣.

d) My own preference would be 1NT with weak minors and a singleton spade.  However, I wouldn't crime 2. Over 2♣ I think clearly a double is preferable. It is giving better information -  6 points + and 8 cards at least in  the red suits.

e) I want to bid both suits, but must start with 2 I believe, since the suit is better and longer. Also, in the eventuality that Partner is on lead against a high level club contract (not unlikely seeing your shape), you want a diamond lead.

f) I prefer 1NT. if the opposition have overcalled with 2♣ then I would double, for the red suits. It is worth noting that it doesn't necessarily pay to overcall 1♠  with 2♣ ulless you have a good suit, since a double gives so much information to the opposition.

g) 1NT is best. If the opposition have bid, then I would Pass on this hand (surprisingly !)

Finally: back to when 2 is a 5 card+ suit, and when it's not.
A recent example :

  West     East
A Q 4 3 2   7
K 10 7 2   A Q 8 6
A J 7   K5
2   A K J 9 4 3

Bidding
 West    North   East    South
    1♣ pass
1♠ pass 2 pass I think 2 is just as good as a bid of 3♣ with this hand,
2 is a reverse, and therefore forcing, whilst a bid of 3♣ is not forcing.
2 will have a minimum of 4 hearts (not 5).
It is always important to play in a 4-4 heart fit if you can.
3 pass 4♣ pass 3 is forcing! Cue bids follow, and an easy 6 is reached
