Shelley 20-10-22 brds 1 & 8
Robin's Lesson 27th October 2022

Three important reminders on Boards 1 & 8 from Thursday’s lesson, (27/10/22)  re hands played in the Shelley last week (20/10/22).

West will lead the ♠King of spades. South counts their tricks, and losers. Losers - 1♠ , at least 1 (probably 2), possibly 1  diamond Trick, and 1 ♣ . A working diamond finesse, will bring the losing tricks to 4. Can anything be done about the heart suit?

Yes; If East has a doubleton Ace, there is a possibility of only losing 1  trick. So, win the ♠ Ace , and play the Jack , hoping for a cover of the Queen. West plays low, so win the Ace, and play a low heart. If East plays the Jack, win the King, and then duck a heart around to East’s Ace. You can now draw the final trump with the Queen, take the Diamond finesse, and make your contract. The only defense is for East to rise with the Ace of hearts, and get a spade ruff. Why play this way? Because, after a weak 2 bid by West, East is more likely to hold the Ace of hearts, and the Queen of diamonds, because West made a weak pre-emptive bid..

On the day two pairs not in 4 contract but of those that were, two made 8 tricks, one made 9 and one made 11!   Some big swings on that hand.

N 9 8 10 7 9
S 9 8 10 7 10
E 4 5 3 6 3
W 4 5 3 6 3

With 10 points, West has enough to show the 2 suits, and responds 1 . North has a comfortable 1♠  overcall, and with only 6 losers, East can jump to 3. 3♠  from West (the Opposition suit) is an enquiry bid, looking primarily to see if 3NT is viable. East will endeavour, with Qx in spades, or a similar holding, to bid 3NT. The Partnership ends up in 5D, a contract which is helped by the diamond and heart finesses both being right.

Note: with spades being bid by North, the following East–West holdings are perfect, if played by East! S) A63 S) Q5 A spade lead from South, will always allow East to make to spade tricks, by ducking in dummy, whether South has the King or not.

Possible tricks the computer estimated!  On the day EW in 2NT was the top score somehow making 12 tricks!
