Robins Lesson 23-09-21

Lesson Thursday 23rd September 2021 using hands played on Wednesday 15th September, click here to see the notes in a printable form.  12 hands may be too many to be displayed fully, click "show details" if a hand is missing.

Hand 1. What would you lead?

West isn’t strong enough to bid 3 .

A Club or a Diamond are unsafe leads.  Best option is A  & partner should signal they like the lead by playing the 10.

Hand 2 - Example of a redouble

Robin's comments on the bidding:

  1. North is in the protective seat so is strong enough to bid 1NT but can’t without a Club stop. With 4-4 in the majors X is correct. With a 5-card H suit 1H would be the bid.
  2. XX shows a strong hand wishing to compete. 2♣  would show a much weaker hand.
  3. 1 South must take into account that North is in the protective seat & so should reduce his point count by 3 & so just reply at the 1-level. Note that although the Diamond suit is much stronger with 4 Hearts & 4 Diamonds you must bid the major. If S had passed then West must bid 2♣ .
  4. 2♣  is likely to make & so South should compete with 2 .
Hand 3. Bidding and lead of interest
  1. 2♣  With 10 points it is better to show your strength, can show your 4 Hearts later.
  2. 2 is a reverse & shows a strong hand which would be strong enough to cope if partner was to go to the 3-level to show suit preference for the Diamonds.
  3. 4 Two factors reduce the strength of North’s hand – he is Aceless & he has a singleton in partner's suit. If he was to reply 3  this would be a strong reply, forcing to at least game (bidding has shown 25+ HCP’s), whereas 4  is a weaker bid showing a minimum hand.
  4. South's final pass, may only have a 5 losing trick count but with a void in partner’s suit doesn’t continue.

Suggested opening Lead = 3S

Hand 4 To open 1NT or Not is the question
  1. 1♠  - don’t open 1NT with two weak suits.
  2. 2♠ - 1NT would be acceptable, but 2♠ is better as the doubleton Club suit gives the opportunities for some ruffs.
  3. West's final pass - Good hand with 6 Losing Trick Count, but not good enough to try for game.

Opening lead = K

Hand 5 - How to find 4H bid
  1. 3  with 5½ losers, 6 Diamonds & 16 points, so a jump in Diamonds best describes your hand.
  2. 3♠  3D isn’t a forcing bid, but you must strive to bid if at all possible.
  3. 4  An 8-card fit, if partner is strong he will continue bidding.
Hand 6 - A competitive auction
  1. 1  Only 11 HCP’s but a very good Heart suit.
  2. East's first rebid -  Pass to show a weak hand. Partner will expect 11-12HCP, 5 Hearts & no Spade support.
  3. 2♠ - With 6 Spades & 4 Diamonds rebid the Spades
  4. 3 - Only 8 HCP’s, but they are all in two suits & a 7 LTC hand.  A Diamond bid now will show 6 Spades & 4 Diamonds. (With 5-4 you would have bid 2  rather than 2♠.
Hand 7 - To bid for a game or a part Score
  1. 1♠  -  Only 11 HCP but a good 5-card Spade suit & 7 LTC.
  2. 3♠  -  Not forcing, shows 4 Spades & around 10 points.
  3.  South's second round pass -  With 7 LTC & having opened light no reason to bid

10♣ is the best lead, but there is nothing wrong with J♠ .

Hand 8 - Fast arrival at game?
  1.  4  - 4 card support & 6 LTC
  2. Double - 3 Heart tricks & the A♠

Opening Lead 10 , this gives nothing away

Hand 9 - Simple overcall or Weak Jump Overcall
  1. 1 - Don’t make Weak Jump Overcall (WJO) with 4 cards in the other major, must bid, hand is too good to pass.
  2. 2♠ -  shows a very good hand & is forcing for one round.
  3. Norths pass second time round  - With such a poor Club suit North should pass.
  4. 4♠ -  6LTC & expects to be able to ruff Clubs in dummy.
  5. O/L = AD, partner replies with 9D to show that he likes Diamonds.

Opening Lead - A , partner replies with 9  to show that he likes Diamonds.

Hand 10 - With or Without Jacoby
  1. 4♠ - 7LTC, 13 HCP.

Alternative bidding on this hand

   W
   N
   E
   S
    1♠ Pass
2♣ Pass 2 Pass
4♠ Pass 4NT

This is a Delayed Game Raise & would be used when responder is interested in going higher than game but doesn’t have Jacoby 2NT as an option.

Hnd 11 - Competitive Bidding
  1.  1  - Only 10 HCP but good Heart suit & all points are working.
  2.  4  -  Shuts out the opposition.
  3.  North's first round pass - Without the interference bid North would have bid 1S even with only 3HCP.

Opening Lead - Q

Hand 12 - Rule of 14
  1. 1♠  -  Open the higher ranking of two touching 5-card suits.
  2. 2  -  9 HCP, but meets the Rule of 14 (If number of HCP + the number of cards in your longest suit is 14 you can respond at the 2-level).
  3. 2♠  -  Suit preference.
