News
For our beginners
It's very pleasing to note that we are averaging around 10 newcomers at our supervised play session every week.
Given this, we have decided to extend our supervised sessions to the end of March. The sessions are already in the club calendar.
If you are one of the beginners who hasn't been attending the supervised sessions, please don't let that stop you coming in future. If you think you could use a bit of extra help, speak to David or one of the experienced players assisting at the session, or give me a call.

2025 Annual General Meeting to be held mid-November
The Committee has decided that the AGM for 2025 will be held on Wednesday 12 November.
The main reason is to alleviate the congestion in the calendar in the lead up to Xmas. It will also give the oncoming Committee more time in charge of the affairs of the club for the financial year (which ends 30 September).
This week's competitive sessions
We have our regular Wednesday morning this week.
Wednesday evening is a session of the Nationwide Pairs No. 5
If you intend to play or are looking for a partner for either Wednesday session, please register via our calendar.
Thursday night on RealBridge will be hosted by our club.
Payment of table money ($4 for members of either club, $6 for visitors) is via your bridge credits on myABF.
-
Once the session has started, the hosting club enters all player names into myABF and the appropriate amount of table is automatically deducted for the club's members.
-
To facilitate the joint session payments, all Capital members have been added as members of our Club on myABF and all SCBC members added as Captial members.

If you wish to play on RealBridge, please do not block your myABF membership of Capital. (note: this is for RB purposes only. You do not have to pay Capital any money for this "membership" and you do not have face-to-face member playing rights there).

If you wish to pay for your partner, please let the director know beforehand. Ditto if you are a visitor.
Semi-finally, an update on last fortnight's Nationwide Pairs - of 408 pairs ranked to date from 23 clubs, Ella Beer and Jill Cromer are 9 th - congratulations!
Finally, a gentle reminder that tables should not start a new board with only 3 minutes remaining for a round. The timer will ring at the 3-minute mark and often the director will call 'no new boards please'. Adhering to this protocol means that the session won't go unduly over time, and makes the director's job a little easier.

For those of you looking to see how you were placed nationally in the Nationwide Pairs - unfortunately their website has been down since Saturday. You can check later using the link in the menu on our website. I can tell you two interesting facts from before it went down, with 270 odd pairs ranked:
-
Ella Beer and Jill Cromer were in the top 20 - congratulations!
-
Capital Bridge Club ran a 9-table Mitchell - nationally, not one of the 9 NS pairs scored 50% or more; and all but two of the EW pairs did (the two pairs were both over 49%)!

Pairs finishing in the top half of the field at the club session earn green masterpoints; those finishing in the top half nationally earn red masterpoints.
-
We post the club results (position and percentage) on the night but contracts and hand records are only posted online when the week long event concludes (this week after midnight on Sunday)

The NWP site posts overall results as they come in from Thursday, so you can see how you're travelling nationally as other clubs post their results. There is a link to the NWP site for this on our menu.
Wednesday evening is a regular session.
If you intend to play or are looking for a partner for either Wednesday session, please register via our calendar.
Thursday night will be our club's first hosting of the joint session with Capital on RealBridge.
Payment of table money ($4 for members of either club, $6 for visitors) is via your bridge credits on myABF.

-

For our beginners
We had 11 beginners at our supervised play session last week, and already we have 6 people registered for this week.
If you intend to take part, let us know beforehand that you are coming. You can text me (Kevin on 0448 545 444) and I will add you to the list of those playing.
We distributed a flyer with information on what the next steps for you might be. That document emphasised the importance of playing regularly and often, and highlights the following opportunities:
-
playing under supervision - in addition to our sessions, there will also be supervised play twice a week at the Canberra Bridge Club in Deakin beginning the last week in January; and
-
playing hands which are suitable for beginners online on BBO, which you hopefully tried over the break, and if not, you can do today and every day!
As mentioned in the flyer, table money is payable for the session. Members pay $4, non-members pay $6. We do not have EFTPOS facilities, so please pay in cash.
If you like some help with any of this, please ring or message me on 0448 545 444 and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
This Wednesday 15 January
Our regular Wednesday morning session this week will be part of the ABF's Nationwide Pairs session for 2025.
For those of you new to the event, the ABF runs a NWP roughly every fortnight. We aim to participate every time, alternating between our Wednesday morning and evening sessions. The results for each pair playing at a participating club are compared against the results for every other pair playing in the event. For our beginners
This Wednesday morning sees the first of our supervised play sessions for the New Year. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss the hands played.
Can we ask that those of you who are intending to take part let us know beforehand that you are coming. It helps us decide how many helpers we need. Please text me (Kevin on 0448 545 444) and I will add you to the list of those playing. We already have 4 people registered to take part; if you're in town, we look forward to seeing you there.
This Wednesday 8 January
There are only 2 sessions this Wednesday:
There is no competitive morning duplicate session.
If you intend to play or are looking for a partner, please register via our calendar.

Annual General Meeting 2024
Our club's AGM will be held on Wednesday 11 December at 5.15pm in the Community Room at the Southern Cross Club Woden, prior to the evening's Christmas activities and bridge.
A separate email with relevant AGM information is being sent to financial members of the club.
Schedule of activities for 11 December
A busy and hopefully a very enjoyable day for both our morning players (including our beginners) and evening players. Refreshments, a raffle and of course bridge at both sessions, all at no charge, plus the AGM and championship prize giving in the evening.
The schedule for the day and a list of prizes are attached to this email.
2024 Club Pairs Championships Round 5 of 6
This week is round 5 of the Championship. Results to date are here.
Eleven pairs remain in contention; of these, no fewer than 5 need to play in both of the last two rounds to remain in contention:
-
3 pairs are still in the running for the under 200 masterpoint prizes
-
7 (including the 3 above) for the under 600 prizes, and
-
all 11 of course for the Open prizes.
As previously noted, the Committee has deferred the morning 2024 Championship to the new year, dates yet to be determined. This is because the sessions would clash with the beginner lessons. The Committee also decided that this event would include prizes for the best-placed one and two beginner pairs.
This Wednesday morning
Beginners Lesson 5 is on this week, at 9.45 am.
Our regular play session is also on, of course, starting at 10 am. Please register via our club calendar.
Summer Festival of Bridge
The Summer Festival will run from 7 to 19 January 2025 at the Canberra Rex Hotel.
This promotional video includes information about the tournament, including about events for rookies (under 20 masterpoints) and novices (under 100) in the first 4 days, structured around a workshop in the mornings and play in the afternoons.
To view the whole program for the tournament, and to enter, go to the event website here.

2024 Club Pairs Championships Round 4 of 6 - please read me!
This week is round 4 of the Championship. Results to date are here.
Of the 18 pairs who have competed so far, no fewer than 10 have played only 1 round and need to play each of the remaining 3 rounds to be ranked (and possibly win a prize).
So please check where your partnership stands.
Prizes will be awarded for:
The 2024 Club Pairs Championship is running on 6 consecutive Wednesday evenings to 4 December. The format is:
-
A pair must play at least 4 sessions to be ranked; their best 4 scores will count.
-
Non-members welcome who frequent the club or partner a member.
-
Red masterpoints will be awarded for each session and overall.
The Committee has deferred the morning 2024 Championship to the new year, dates yet to be determined. This is because the sessions would clash with the beginner lessons. The Committee also decided that this event would include prizes for the best-placed one and two beginner pairs.
This Wednesday morning
Beginners Lesson 4 is on this week, at 9.45 am. With 20 enrolments, we should always have an even number of tables but occasionally one or more participants won't make a session. Our thanks to the 3 members who have volunteered to make up an even number of tables to facilitate the course presentation.
Our regular play session is also on, of course, starting at 10 am. Please register via our club calendar.
Website update
We have done some work updating our website. In brief:
-
The "Club Information" sub-menu has new text for booking a session or finding a partner
-
There is a new menu item "Visitors" - mainly about joining a session
-
There is a new menu item "Benefactors" - to acknowledge those organisations that support our club, and
-
The "Useful Links" sub-menu has now been now activated, with topic groupings.
Christmas events will be on Wednesday 11 December
Christmas festivities will be held at both sessions on Wednesday 11 December:
-
The sessions will be free.
-
Catering will be provided.
-
There will be a raffle at each session for those in attendance.
More detail should be available next week.
ACT Open Butler Pairs Championship 2024 - Tuesday night at Deakin
This ACT Championship runs over 3 weeks from 19 November to 3 December. Details and entry here.
Anyone who clicked on that link last week will have noticed I gave the start date as last Tuesday (apologies). As I write there are 14 pairs entered, none from our club (hey people!)
ABF Club Teams Knockout semi-finals
The ABF Club Teams Knock Out semifinals were played on RealBridge last Tuesday night.
Commiserations to our team in the under 300 masterpoint division, who lost to the Wagga Wagga team by 94.1 IMPs to 70.
Details and results for all matches can be found here. The finals are being played on 10 December.

Nationwide Pairs - update
Session 22 of the NWP which was to have been run last week did not take place.
The ABF 's Chief Executive has written to participating clubs. In part, the email says:
"As you are no doubt aware, there have been several technical issues encountered over recent months with the Nationwide Pairs (NWP).
The problems stem from both hardware and software issues and I realise that they have been the cause of frustration for many of you.
Our NWP manager is working diligently to resolve these issues.
The current situation is that we are unable to say for sure that each iteration of the event will be able to run. Please check the website regularly."
We will run the NWP if at all possible, otherwise it will be a regular pairs session. We will identify future sessions that we run by annotating the calendar.

ABF Club Teams Knockout semi-finals
The ABF Club Teams Knock Out has reached the semifinals stage, with matches being played on RealBridge this Tuesday night.
We have a team in the under 300 masterpoint division, playing against the Wagga Wagga club. Best wishes to Brenda Watts & Paul Appelby, and Prakash Muttuvelu and Craig Curry.
The other u/300 semi-final is between Tasmanian Bridge Association and Stepbridge (an online club).
Details and results for all matches can be found here. The Open semi-finals can be kibitzed with a 20 minute delay.
ACT Open Butler Pairs Championship 2024 - Tuesday night at Deakin
This ACT Championship runs over 3 weeks from 12 November to 3 December.
At the time of writing there are only 6 pairs entered, none from our club (sorry about the late notice). Details and entry here.
This Wednesday 13 November
*** 9.45 am - Beginner Bridge Lesson No 3 at our club ***
Enrolment in our 6-week course which runs to 4 December is now at 20 (up from 18 last week thanks to a very welcome couple of late joiners).
Steve our presenter needs one or two people on standby in case one or more participants can't make a particular session; having a whole number of tables makes it easier for him to present the course. If you don't normally play Wednesday mornings but can help for one or more lessons, please contact me on 0448 545 444.
*** 10am - Nationwide Pairs (if running) ***
This Wednesday morning session is scheduled to be a session of the NWP (No. 22).
There is some doubt over whether the NWP is going ahead - the website from which we download hand records and playing files is currently inaccessible. Additionally, there were major delays in posting the results from a fortnight ago due to technical difficulties.
We will run the NWP if at all possible, otherwise it will be a regular pairs session.
*** 7pm - 2024 Club Pairs Championships Round 3 of 6 ***
The 2024 Club Pairs Championship is running on 6 consecutive Wednesday evenings to 4 December. The format is:
-
A pair must play at least 4 sessions to be ranked; their best 4 scores will count.
-
Non-members welcome who frequent the club or partner a member.
-

2024 Club Championships
The 2024 Club Pairs Championship will be run on 6 consecutive Wednesday evenings, from 30 October to 4 December. The format will be as follows:
-
A pair must play at least 4 sessions to be ranked; their best 4 scores will count.
-
Non-members welcome who frequent the club or partner a member.
-
Red masterpoints will be awarded for each session and overall.
-
Prizes will be awarded for:
The Committee has decided to defer the morning 2024 Championship to the new year, dates yet to be determined. This is because the sessions would clash with the beginner lessons. The Committee also decided that this event would include prizes for the best-placed one and two beginner pairs.
Christmas events will be on Wednesday 11 December
Christmas festivities will be held at both sessions on Wednesday 11 December:
-
The sessions will be free.
-
Catering will be provided.
-
There will be a raffle at each session for those in attendance.
National Club events this month
From last week's Nationwide Pairs, with 302 pairs participating across the 18 of 23 clubs who have submitted results, congratulations go to:
-
Alex Hewat and George Stockham who are running 24th
-
Chris Tough and partner who are 26th (even if both these pairs achieved their results playing at Capital!), and
-
George Palavestra and Lisa Ralphs who are 46th (best-placed from our club's session).
The next NWP session will be Wednesday morning 30 October.
The evening session on the 30th will the Australia Wide Restricted Pairs (where non-contending players pairs may play). The session will double as the first round of the Club Pairs Championship.
Summer Festival of Bridge
The Summer Festival will run from 7 to 19 January 2025 at the Canberra Rex Hotel. There are several events catering to each level of ability, including rookie (under 20 masterpoint) events).
To view the details of this tournament, and to enter, go to the event website here. A brochure for the tournament is attached to this email.

If you can help out, even for just an hour or two, please email cib@abf.com.au and include "Volunteer" in the subject line and include in the email when you would be able to help out. The tasks are not difficult and many hands make light work!

ABF Club Teams Knockout 2024
The second of three qualifying round of this event is being played this Tuesday evening on RealBridge.
We have a team in the under 300 masterpoint division. Playing this Tuesday are Paul Appelby, Barry Graham, Prakash Muttuvelu and Craig Curry. Click here to see progress scores.
At its 29 August meeting, the ABF Board considered the number of entries this year. It noted:
-
The number of teams participating in the Club Teams Knockout (CTK) this year has increased to 55 from 47 in 2023 and 32 in 2022.
-
NSW clubs are relatively poorly represented in this national event with no Sydney based clubs participating.
The Board highlighted the need for increased promotion, especially to Sydney based clubs to provide their players with the opportunity to earn gold points.
Nationwide Pairs 17 results
Well done to Cathy Nichols and John Niven who were placed 30th of 365 pairs in this event (with 24 of 26 clubs having reported).

Event News
NSW State Wide Pairs - this Wed evening
We are hosting a session of the NSW State-Wide Pairs as our regular Wednesday evening session, starting at 7pm.
All players will pay our normal table money. The extra entry fees to this event will be met by South Canberra.
Prizes will be awarded by Bridge NSW:
-
cash prizes to the overall top five place-getters
-
prize vouchers from the Bridge Shop for winners and runners-up,
-
certificates of achievement to the highest placed pair in each club
-
prize vouchers to the top pair in each of under 25, under 50 and under 100 masterpoint sections.
State-wide results will be posted to the site below when all results by competing clubs submitted.
BFACT Gala Day (incl GNOT selection) - Sat 10 August
Please support the BFACT Gala Day if you can. Overall numbers at the time of writing are disappointingly low.
A major objective of the day is to select “ACT 2” and “ACT Provincial” teams for the Grand National Open Teams (GNOT). A provincial player is one who is under 300 MP or a player from a provincial club affiliated to BFACT.
Our club will provide a reimbursement of $21 to members who play in this event (entry fee is $42).
Club members with under 300 masterpoints are especially encouraged to try making the ACT Provincial team by playing in the Gala Day. Not only is the team guaranteed 3 days of bridge online in September, ACT Provincial is one of around 30 non-metropolitan teams in the GNOT, which gives it a reasonable shot at making the final round-robin in November.
To enter the Gala Day events, click here. For a fuller description of the GNOT, click here.
BFACT Interclub Teams
Our club will reimburse the full cost of entry ($60) for each member representing the club in this teams event on Sunday 24 August, which is being held as part of the Cootamundra Congress.
There is no limit on the number of entries from a club. Joint teams are also accepted (and we will subsidise our share of those teams).
Please arrange your own teams. Currently we have 8 home members entered across the intermediate, restricted and novice sections.
For more information or to enter, please click here.
BBO Joint Club Pairs Championship continues (with prizes!)
The Championship continues this week. Progressive rankings after round 2 are here.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners ($50 each) and the runners-up ($25 each).
The Championship is being held over 6 consecutive Thursdays from 25 July to 29 August.
ABF Club Teams Knockout starts 6 August
We have just one team entered - in the under 300 masterpoint division.
You can find participant information and results as they are reported here.
You can also kibitz the Open Division from that site.

On current nominations and availability, we are likely to be able to field teams next week in the Under 750 and Under 100 Divisions. We also have a pair for the Open team but they need another pair to come forward.
-
Extra players to guarantee a start next week in these 3 Divisions are highly desirable.
-
It would be nice to be able to field teams in the Under 300 and Under 50 Divisions as well.
-
Only home members and regular non-home members and visitors are eligible to represent our club.
Note that if we don't field a team in a division in the round on August 6, we can't join that division later.
Remember also that our club will meet the full cost of entry.
Entries close 4 August. To nominate:
-

-
by booking with or requesting a partner on the calendar entry for the August 6 round.

Teams that are knocked out go into a Swiss repechage. The final phase has 2 divisions, to be played face-to-face in Sydney in late November:
-
a 4-team knockout final, consisting of the two undefeated teams from the previous phase, plus the top two from the repechage; and
-
an 8-team non-metropolitan round- robin final.

CORRECTION - ABF CLUB TEAMS KNOCKOUT BEGINS TUESDAY 6 AUGUST
The first session of this event is 6 August, not 13 August as stated in recent newsletters. The closing date for entries for 4 August.
Please nominate asap - we are hoping to field a team in each of the 5 divisions (no limit on team numbers) - the important point is that we have enough players for the first round (there is no need to commit now for later rounds).
Apologies for the confusion

Not only is the team guaranteed 3 days of bridge online in September, ACT Provincial is one of around 30 non-metropolitan teams in the GNOT, which gives it a reasonable shot at making the final round-robin in November.
RealBridge Promotion extended
Canberra Bridge Club has extended its offer encouraging its members and their guests to try RealBridge to the end of July. Each player can play 3 sessions across June & July at a reduced entry fee of just $6 per session.
The club runs 4 sessions a week on RealBridge, being Monday nights and Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons. Payment is taken via a player's myABF bridge credits.

The Canberra Bridge Club advises that the recent fundraising event for the Australian Under 26 Women’s Team which was held to support Canberrans Zara Chowdhury and Diya Shah for their airfares and accommodation raised a healthy $2032.00. Two important changes to in-person playing arrangements
-
Wednesday evenings - play starts at 7pm from now on!
-
Covid protocol change - The Committee has agreed to a suggestion that bidding boxes remain stationary in future in-person sessions. The formal Covid protocol document will be updated shortly.
Two national club events this Wed 29 May
This Wednesday morning, we will be hosting a section of the Australia-Wide Novice Pairs run by Australian Bridge Magazine (non-contending pairs allowed for small clubs). We have already let the other Canberra region clubs know about the event, but if you happen to know any novices who may be interested, please have a word and ask them to register. A flyer is here;
The Wednesday evening session will be Nationwide Pairs #11.
Please note that we only charge our usual table money to all players, members or not. Our club bears the entry fees charged by the organisers of these events ($5 per player for the Australia-Wide Pairs, $1 per player for the NWP).
28 May - first round GNOT Open Teams qualifying
A new, 3-phase, format for the Grand National Open Teams is being introduced this year. The new format provides for greater involvement for all teams and incentives for more non-metropolitan teams to take part (ACT provincial is a non-metropolitan team).
-
Phase 1 is the usual region-based selection process (for BFACT, this selects 3 teams, Canberra 1, Canberra 2 and ACT Provincial)
-
Phase 2 is new. It will be knock out tournament, run on RealBridge, with losing teams moving to a repechage Swiss event.
-
Phase 3 will be 2 face-to-face finals.
-
The main event will be a knockout involving 4 teams, the top 2 undefeated from Phase 2, plus the top two from the repechage.
-
The other final will be an 8-team round-robin of the top non-metropolitan teams who do not qualify for the main final. (ACT provincial is one of some 30 non-metropolitan teams).
-
Full details of the overall competition are here.
Dates for each phase are as follows:
-
Phase 1 (BFACT qualifying events)
-
Phase 2 (National qualifying) - weekend of Friday 20 September to Sunday 22 September (on RealBridge)
-
Phase 3 (National finals) - weekend of Saturday 23 November and Sunday 24 November (in Sydney).
RealBridge Promotion by Canberra Bridge Club
Canberra Bridge Club is encouraging its members and their guests to try RealBridge by offering each player 3 sessions in June at a reduced entry fee of just $6.
The club runs 4 sessions a week on RealBridge, being Monday nights and Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons. Payment is taken via a player's myABF bridge credits.

Victor Champion Cup, Melbourne
The Victor Champion Cup is one of the major ABF Congresses. This year it includes two Restricted events, for players under 300 mps:
-
A Pairs event over two days, 6 & 7 June.
-
A teams event over 3 days 8 - 10 June.
-
Entries for this event are still open - click here for more detail.
ABF Club Teams Knockout 2024 - Update
I have now received some clarification from the ABF about this competition. There are to-date two important changes from previous years:
-
there will be only two qualifying rounds, the first of which will be in August (the June round has been scrapped)
-
there will be an extra division, for players under 300 mps.
I understand that the ABF's marketing campaign for this competition will start shortly, at which time I will bring you more detail. I will also seek nominations for the now 5 divisions closer to the first round.
A Compulsive Pastime - A History of Bridge in the ACT and Surrounding Region
South Canberra has a copy of this publication which can be viewed at our in-person sessions on Wednesday. Written by John Brockwell and David Hoffman, two of Canberra’s longstanding players, this book covers the evolution and development of bridge in Canberra and the surrounding regions.
Price: $60 + postage $12. To obtain a copy, contact David Hoffman 0407 782 756 or via email davidhoffman@iinet.net.au, or collect from Canberra Bridge Club.
Club - reminders
-
Playing at the Club
-
-
As usual, to play in either Wednesday session (10 am or 7.00 pm), please register to play using the club calendar.
-
Visitors are of course always welcome.
-
Our Covid-19 Safety Plan includes staying home if unwell, letting me know via email to caruak@gmail.com (in-confidence) if you test positive or develop symptoms within 3 days of playing.
-
The sessions will run as long as there is a minimum of two tables registered in the club calendar. If a session is unlikely to reach that number, we try to contact those registered to save them a wasted trip. Table money is payable once there are 3 full tables.
-
Thursday evenings on BBO - visitors welcome. Registration on BBO in the usual manner.
-
For instructions on how to take part in any of the above sessions, please visit our website.
