Crockfords Cup Result July 2014

Two of our members have had great sucess in the Crockfords cup beating a team of leading English International players. In the fourth round of Crockfords Bob James (Captain), Robin Clarke, Tony Eastgate and Nick Press beat Alexander Allfrey (Captain), David Bakhshi, Tony Forrester, David Gold, Andrew McIntosh and Andrew Robson. However nothing gets easier; as in the next round they meet Anita Sinclair (Captain), Espen Erichsen, Ben Green, John Holland, Zia Mahmood, Nafiz Zorlu. Good luck to them all.

Denny Wade

Denny Wade passed away on Saturday 2nd June after losing her latest battle with cancer.  Denny joined Selsdon in the mid 70’s and was a loyal member of the club including a long spell on the Committee.  She won every Surrey competition available to her (some more than once).  She is also the only person to have won Selsdon’s Grand Slam (all six club championship events) on three occasions.  She holds the record of all time wins at the club with 182 victories.

Selsdon Competition Points

Selsdon Competition Points

Selsdon Competition Points (SCPs) are used in the evaluation of results of pairs events played at Selsdon Bridge Club. They are unique to the club. The purpose of converting raw percentage results to points is mainly to give weight to relative positions in the field and to eliminate excessively wild results.

The competitions which use SCPs are the Ife Cup and the Memorial Bowl. The former is played on the first Thursday of each month and the latter is all other Thursdays in the year with the exception of the other competitions (Championship Pairs, Mixed Pairs and the teams events).

SCPs are awarded on a scale of 0 to 100 half of which is given based on the percentage and the other half given based on the position in the field. The 50 SCPs given based on the percentage are awarded at the rate of 2½ SCPs for every percent scored above 50% up to a maximum of 50 SCPs for a score of 70% or more. The 50 SCPs given based on position are awarded in equal instalments with 50 to the winners down to 0 for exactly half way. Where there are tied positions the SCPs are shared equally.

Teams of Three

Selsdon Bridge Club - Teams of Three Championship

For the Rosemary Fellows Trophy

Teams of Three is a form of bridge unique to Selsdon Bridge Club. Each player spends about a third of the evening playing with each team mate. The remaining third is spent playing in an individual section where in each round the partners 'borrow' each other to complete a team of four. Over the years it has become very popular and is now an established annual event. The tournament is open to non-members.

The EBU Tom Bradley Award 2017
The EBU Tom Bradley Award 2017

The EBU Tom Bradley Award for 2017 has been given to Selsdon Bridge Club member Anton Mauve and his wife Jessica.

The giving of the Tom Bradley Award to Jessica and Anton Mauve is made because of their drive, determination and enthusiasm in starting and fostering School Bridge in the West Kent Area.

They had 2 daughters attending the local Primary School at Weald and having taught them the rudiments of Bridge at home, gained the support of other parents in order to approach their daughters’ School with a view to starting a Bridge Club there.

The Club started in early 2016 following the acceptance of the idea by the Head Teacher and Staff, they then gained the assistance of a Bridge playing member of the staff and an ‘EBU trained teacher’.

They organised the lunchtime sessions, canvassed other parents, obtained the necessary equipment and started the lunchtime Club Sessions.

They obtained 20 interested students to attend these sessions, coaching throughout the lessons that followed the EBU prescribed format for mininbridge teaching. Later in the year the Class went on to ‘bridge proper' and learnt card play, tactics etc. At the end of the year the Class were invited by the EBU with another School to play against the House of Lords Bridge Club. The Class performed well in this match and as a follow up the Mauves arranged good publicity for School Bridge in the local Press. In conjunction with their efforts at the School they also helped at the West Kent Youth Bridge Committee’s Ruffian’s Bridge Club held on Sunday Mornings at Tunbridge Wells Bridge Club.

This year they have arranged two classes to run concurrently at Weald school, one a beginners class starting with minibridge and another carrying on from the previous year with Acol play. Following the success at Weald School they decided to instigate an inter school Bridge Competition at Weald. The EBU supported and assisted in this venture and other local Schools sent players to participate. The event held in May was a great success and stimulated much interest in the Area, again with good press coverage. The inter schools event will now be run annually.

All the above activities have greatly stimulated School Bridge were as a direct result of the drive of Jessica and Anton. They achieved this by the way they obtained the support of the EBU and all those who have interfaced and supported the initiatives. Their enthusiasm for the promotion of School Bridge in the Area is matched by the skills they have to inspire others.

TOP TRUMP

making Selsdon Bridge Club even greater

Edition Number 2 – January 2017

Please email competition entries,  comments on Top Trump,  Letters to the Editor,  proposals for articles to jerryfitzmsp@gmail.com

Opening Bid

The jury is out as to whether the first edition of Top Trump was or was not a triumph for democracy.   Certainly,  the rumour that the KGB is promoting the sales of the magazine is exaggerated,  and  probably put about by clandestine enemies of the Selsdon Bridge Club.   Those enemies should know that the committee will not be deflected from its intention to twin Selsdon BC with Veliky Novgorod BC.

The subject of “Away from the Table” this edition is Ann Clarke.   The only survivor of the club from its pre-Old Whits days,  Ann is formally declared “Mother of the House”.

Thank you to members who navigated the website to read TT Numero Uno.  I want members to use the website,  but recognise that for some potential readers the navigation thereof is fraught with hazards.   For that reason,  TT will now be emailed to members.  Of course,  it will also continue to be available on the website.

Steve Irwin has done a huge amount to set up an excellent website.    Very generously,  he is willing to assist members who are seeking to overcome feelings of technological inadequacy in respect of use of the website,  even to the extent of making home visits.   Please speak to him if you would like to take advantage of this offer.   While I am on the subject of Steve’s generosity,  I thank him warmly for his support – and not least that of his wife,  Sally – in getting TT to print.   The editor is in the ranks of the technologically inadequate,  alas,  and without the efforts of the Irwins there would be no magazine.

Comp One attracted a rather pathetic response – just four entries.   Given that it takes me six hours to prepare the comp and then some hours for Steve to format it in a publishable way,  I express a little disappointment.

We are very lucky that Robin has agreed to be the resident comp judge.   All he receives is the anonymised entries,  and the info that the competitors themselves work from.   He does not see all four hands – only I do.  So he is working completely from Acol bidding principles.   There is no sounder authority than Robin on such principles in the county of Surrey.   Please read his judgement on Comp One and forthcoming comps if you want to learn how to bid more soundly.

Please email me your entries to Comp 2 by 11 February.   TT is a house magazine.   No-one is going to be pilloried for receiving a bad result.   If you say the answer is 6S and it’s actually 1NT,  you will be able to bear the ignominy in the knowledge that no-one else – including Robin – will be aware of your identity.

I look forward to receiving from you letters,  articles,  and ideas for articles.

Put this in your diary NOW!

Yes – it’s the long-awaited first joint venture of Selsdon and Caterham Bridge Clubs.

18 March 2017 at 11 a.m. (estimated end time 6 p.m.)

This will be a blue-pointed Swiss Pairs event with seven matches each of seven boards.   The cost is £15 per person,  with all profits going to Tandridge Academic Support for Kenya.

The venue for the match is White Hart Barn,  Bay Path,  Godstone,  RH9 8DT

Prize allocation

From 5th of January 2017 the session prize vouchers will be awarded to the pair who have performed best against their National Grade that evening.   The National Grading system is effectively a handicapping system.

The successful pair is added to the results the following morning with the title “most impressive performance” (see  first link below). You can find your own (indeed all) the scores for each session on My EBU beta (second link below).

Andy Poole and Leo Zeglovskis won the session on 5 January.   Under the new system,  they have NOT won the prize.   Congratulations to them,  but hard luck for not winning the prize.   That has gone to Sue Muggridge and Frank Willson,  who performed better than Andy and Leo against their National Grade.   Congratulations to them too.

For Questions 1-5,  you merely need to state what you deem to be the correct bid or lead.   There is no implication that your bid will be the final bid in the auction.   You may if you wish add one or two sentences of explanation for your answer,  and this may be taken into account by Robin Clarke,  our resident judge,  in the event that a tie-break is needed.

In each question apart from Q6,  you are holding the West cards at IMPs scoring.

AWAY FROM THE TABLE

Ann Clarke

Born in Manchester shortly after the war,  Ann was transplanted at the age of two to Port of Spain, Trinidad.   Her father - a consulting electrical engineer - was appointed to manage the installation and then train a maintenance crew at the island's first brewery.

The family lived the comfortable life of relatively affluent expats.   Ann’s best friends were Popsi,  the maid's daughter,  and rich kid Percy from next door.   Percy was not allowed to play with Popsi,  a mystery unsolved by Ann until she developed an adult knowledge of the sadder ways of the world.

Returning to Manchester in May 1953 at the age of seven was a rude culture shock.   Ann recalls a long journey by steam train from Southampton to Manchester in what seemed conditions of perishing cold,  and emerging from the train to be pawed over by a crowd of strangers who made unavailing efforts to persuade her that they were close and dear relations.   It was an episode which enabled Ann to develop empathy into how a child perceives the world.

Ann was educated at state primary school and the prestigious Central Girls' Grammar School,  and then Matlock College,  where she did her teacher training.   Maths was Ann's best subject at school.   Of a grammar school sixth form of 200 in the great city of Manchester,  she was one of only four girls taking Maths A-level.

In the weeks before the end of the summer term after the final A-level paper had been taken,  the students had to return to school.   Ann's Maths teacher,  Miss Newton,  announced to her protégées that they were not equipped for the big wide world until they had learned the game of Bridge.   And with a class size of four,  Serendipity had provided a vital basic prerequisite for playing our game!

While doing a summer job in the Isle of Wight,  Ann met and fell in love with a young man called Malcolm Webster.   Happily for the development of  Ann's card-playing prowess,  he also had learned Bridge at school.   Malcolm and Ann married in 1968,  and by the summer of 1969 had bought a house in Selsdon.   And it was at Selsdon Library that they saw a poster advertising the Selsdon Bridge Club,  and in due course turned up at Saint John's Church in Upper Selsdon Road where the weekly duplicate was then held.   Eight tables would fill the room which the club was allocated.

The Chairman of the club then was Fred Hobden,  who had been a founder member in 1932.   Fred was a huge figure in Surrey Bridge,  having achieved the rare honour of being elected to a second term of office as County President.   Fred encouraged Ann to become a Director,  and Ann regularly undertook directorial duties until very recently.   Ann feels that what she lacked in knowledge of the more arcane points of bridge rules was compensated for by her ability to ensure that 24 boards were played in three hours!

Ann has never aspired to be one of the game's top players.   She plays a competent game,  and with the objective of enjoyment rather than victory.   Malcolm was a much stronger player;  he was a stalwart of the club's first team,  and he served the club with distinction in the office of Treasurer.

Malcolm was a keen sportsman,  and enjoyed good health.   One devastating evening a fortnight before Christmas in 1993,  he went to bed early feeling unwell,  asked Ann shortly after to call an ambulance,  and died in Mayday Hospital before midnight.

Ann had to carry on as best she could not least for their three teenaged children.   Ann recollects that she had great support from her Bridge friends;  in particular,  she acknowledges the kindness of Brian Kunz,  who himself is sadly no longer with us.   It was Brian who encouraged her to continue to play Bridge during this difficult period.

Between 1969 and 2006 - except for 10 years while her children were young - Ann was a primary school teacher in Croydon,  teaching in four schools with challenging intakes.   Ann never wanted to be a Head or Deputy Head,  although she held posts of responsibility.   She enjoyed teaching her class,  and the enthusiasm and commitment which she brought to the job still shines through when she talks about her work.   It is easy to see why Ann flourished in difficult schools.   She is firm - I put that adjective first - and she is fair and kind and unsentimental.   These are attributes which are essential for successful teaching in working-class schools.

In 2003,  Ann married David Clarke,  and her extended family contains three step-grandchildren in addition to six grandchildren.   Ann “loves being a grandma”.   She provides her family with dog-walking services,  maths tuition and – not least – the benefit of her accomplishment as a seamstress and dressmaker.   A very proud achievement is that she made the wedding-dress for her daughter,  Natalie,  and made it to Natalie’s demanding specification,  which entailed an integrated satin train.

A committed member of the Church of England,  Ann has been a stalwart volunteer at St Mary’s,  Addington Village,  which is the oldest and one of the finest churches in the borough of Croydon,  and – indeed – the Southwark diocese.   Ann serves on the PCC as Parish Safeguarding Officer.   Her role is to ensure that the church meets the needs not just of the young but also vulnerable adults.

Ann enjoys relaxing and socialising.   She and her grandchildren play golf,  but she is not fiercely competitive - the objective is recreation and pleasure.   And - whisper it quietly - Ann is one of a coven of Selsdon ladies who meet monthly to wine and dine,  and discuss who knows what.   I do not have the temerity to seek to look further into these matters.

Ann has lived a well-rounded life in which family love and duty have been in remarkable balance with professional and community service and making time and space for more personal enjoyment.

Young as she is,  Ann is the only surviving member of the club before the move to the Old Whits in 1971.   In two years time,  she will clock up her fiftieth year of membership.   May there be many more!

I Hope to Say This Only Once.....

A message from the Chief Director which prudent members will not wish to ignore!

East needs very few values for 5 of a minor or a slam to be a good contract,  and it is going to be very difficult for partner to judge what to do over a 4C/4D non-forcing bid by West.   A direct 4NT should be showing a distributional hand in both minors with quite a strong hand asking partner to choose.   A takeout double does not look like a good idea.   West is likely to bid 4H,  and 5C after such response does not really convey East’s shape.

Despite being vulnerable,  West should not be nervous about competing further.   After N/S have subsided in 2D,  West can infer that East is likely to have a few points.   With the expectation that the opposition has at least an eight card trump fit,  East/West should have either their own eight card fit or two seven card fits.   It is unlikely that East has five hearts as he would have competed after the first double.   So, after the second double,  West can bid 2S with the expectation that this will be converted to 3C without a spade fit.

East’s double is likely to be saying that he has a good hand with high card points but is not sure what is best.   West can almost certainly place East with a club void making East likely to have a 5-4-4-0 shape.   If East had a second five card suit,  he would surely have bid it.   So a 4-4 heart fit looks odds on.   4C may go down but a major game is likely to score better.   West’s values are also working so a major game looks to be a good spot.

Initially,  a difficult decision.   One needs to try to work out why after strong support,  South has bashed 6H declining to make a cue bid or using Blackwood to check on controls.   The possibilities are that South has a second strong undisclosed suit (that is,  clubs) or diamond fit with black card controls.   An attacking lead,  therefore,  looks best to create a second trick before it is too late.   There does not seem any rush to cash AD as any diamond losers which Declarer might have will probably not run away.   Also,  the bidding indicates that a trump lead is unlikely to reduce the number of tricks that Declarer can make.

Whilst it is usual to lead one’s longest suit against NT contracts,  on this hand with no entry and the suit blocked for cashing,  there is no value other than for safety.   Better to try to find partner’s suit as this will provide the best chance for setting up additional tricks.

We have a new feature in this edition of TT – the first in an occasional series of articles on our members’ greatest or most miserable days at the table.  To kick off we have “Phil’s brilliancy”, written by Mr Harris himself.  Of course, it is 100% true. We do not stoop to fake news in Top Trump!

Please send me your own story of bridge triumph or disaster.  The Editor will edit and seek to maximise the entertainment value of the story, but he will also endeavour to be faithful to the spirit of your contribution.

Thank you to Tony Cherrett for his organisation of the blue-pointed event at Caterham on 18 March.  And many congrats to the runaway winners – Roxanne Day and Steve Irwin.  And innovation does not end with Tony’s event.  On 25 May, the first Selsdon Handicapped Teams event will be held.  Please find more details on the website.

Frank Willson features in our member profile in this edition.  Evacuee, Barnardo’s boy, chosen knock-up partner of a Wimbledon champion, dance floor performer with Sandie Shaw – what a life.  Just don’t mention machetes to him – Crimewatch viewers will know what I mean.

There is no competition in this issue.  The first two competitions attracted few entrants.  If, improbably, there is popular demand for its restoration, vox pop will find a listening ear.

It may be out with the old but it is also in with the new.  There is a new series:  “We need to talk about….”  The first topic is Overcalls.  Please discuss it with your partner.  In the next edition, there will be a sequel: “Experts on Overcalls”.  (I spent half a working life as a teacher. I cherish the idea that readers of TT may wish to reflect upon and improve their performance.  Perhaps a crazy idea – I hope not!)

This year, we celebrate the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the club. I shall be writing a couple of articles in future editions of the magazine about our glorious past.  If, improbably, you know anyone – other than Ann Clarke – who has memories of the club going back to the 1960s or before, please let me know.

I would be delighted to get readers’ feedback which I could publish, particularly comments expressing disagreement about something, or courting controversy in any shape or form related to bridge.  There is an email address at the top.

Whilst 1Dx may well be defeated easily, E/W are likely to make a vulnerable game which would usually score better.  With W’s diamond holding there is a temptation to bid 1NT, but whilst E/W could be short of game values after the protection it is difficult for East to know whether to raise a 2NT bid to 3NT with around 10-11 points which may be sufficient to make 3NT, so a direct 3NT response would be appropriate.  Overall, with a doubleton spade and East likely to have at least 3 it is probably better to look for a 4-4 (or possibly 4-5) heart fit as this may generate more tricks through spade ruffs and score better than 3NT.  A 2D cue bid will enable any heart fit to be found.

On usual bidding methods, East’s 4S response should be denying first and second round control in both red suits.  Unless East has opened light, it most likely means that East holds A and K spades.  Whilst this can be checked via 4NT, a 6S contract is likely to need at least one finesse if East holds a 4-2-5-2 shape.  However, if East holds 4-2-6-1 shape with something like AKxx, Jx, QJxxxx, x, then 6S is a good contract unless the defensive position allows a ruff on a diamond lead.  With good partnership understanding, a 5D bid by West will show slam interest, a fit for diamonds and must imply a heart control after East has denied first and second round control.  So it then falls to East to judge the hand.  East will know that West is expecting the probable  4-5 shape in the red suits (with 4-4 East would have opened 1NT) and has not checked the trump holding.

All West knows is that they have a fit in clubs or possibly hearts based on the knowledge that North/South have identified that they have a spade fit.  Game could be on if East has the right cards, but 5C or 3 NT look the least attractive bids.  A 4C bid would probably lose the chance of finding any heart fit.  Probably 4H looks to be a reasonable shot and could very well make even on a 4-3 fit if East holds the club K as Declarer could not easily be forced to deplete the trump suit.  Equally N/S may elect to save with 4S over a game bid which creates an opportunity for East to consider 5C or a double depending on shape and high cards.

East had the option to double 6S with two defensive tricks and with no diamond winners.  West is expecting 6S to make and there would be a ruff and discard with East leading a diamond.  The question is whether a 7D “save” is going to be -500 or even up to -1700, which would be a worse score than 6S making (-1430).  Unless East has one trick to offer (that needs to be in hearts or clubs) and three or fewer clubs, a save will not gain against a non-vulnerable 6S.  Probably better to pass.

For many, the spade jack will be almost automatic as it is safe and with the knowledge that East has a six card suit there is the possibility that it gives an opportunity to beat the contract.  Whether South has one or two spade stops, the defence need to win a side suit trick before Declarer can take nine tricks.  Probably there are four or more tricks for Declarer in diamonds, possibly three club tricks and one or two spade tricks.  So, with Declarer expecting a spade lead, there may be a better chance in leading the QH to create five defensive tricks.  Assuming N/S hold the heart king, they may need to duck to try to prevent East returning the suit after a possible diamond trick, in which case West is still on lead and no tempo has been lost to switch if appropriate.

Probably a question of play to minimise how many off. Many permutations, but assume from the bidding that AQxx or more clubs sit over dummy.  After a club lead, best defence is likely to be cashing AQ of clubs and a spade return to try to force dummy.  With a likely low spade at Trick 3, it is probably best for Declarer to play J or 10 so West would give a trick away if a spade was returned.  Assuming West plays a heart, Declarer should play the 10 from dummy and hope that this has to be won with A or K.  If another spade comes back, Declarer should win with his ace and continue with spades hoping to create a ruffing finesse position or dropping the last honour.  If East started with only AQxx of clubs and the spade and heart position is favourable with the King of Diamonds onside you will escape with minimal injuries or even just scrape home!

Scoring for Problem Six: each answer was scored individually: the scores have not been set out in order to protect the reputations of individual competitors.  The best answer came from Alan Bailey.

And the winner is …………………..   Alan Bailey

In a difficult competition, Alan scored 37 out of 60, which was first equal with Debbi Harris.  The answers to the fiendish Q.6 were used as a tie-break, and Judge Robin decreed that Alan’s analysis was outstanding and so Alan narrowly pips Debbi to the coveted free entry voucher.

The Brilliancy

Just because I ply my talents at Selsdon doesn’t mean that Phil Harris is the kind of boy to play at any old venue.

The truth is that somewhere like the RAC Club is more my kind of scene. And thus, dear reader, you will be less than dumbfounded to find me in Pall Mall – dicky bow and all – on a windswept and dreary evening in [Get on with it, Phil – Ed.]

It was the first round of the Knaves’ Flitch, one of clubland’s most prestigious knock-out events.  Our opponents were the Marquis of Crumpington’s Crumpets – an all-male team in case you wondered - who had earned the soubriquet because most opponents toasted them on both sides. Defeat could not be countenanced.

I am at my best under adversity, which is just as well as for some reason I find there is a lot of adversity about.

Adversity on this night lurked in a space very adjacent to ours.  There they congregated – every Bridge-player’s worst nightmare – the Bullingdon Backgammoners, whose first rule is to shake dice with the ferocity of Satan’s little pixies every time Declarer has an agonising choice of lines of play at the next table.

I played like a drain for the first 24 boards.  (I blame Satan’s pixies.).  Going into the last stanza of 8 boards, we were 14 IMPs down.  For some reason, my team-mates held me responsible just because I had doubled three part-score contracts making with overtricks.

For the final board, I was sitting South, East-West being vulnerable.  The full deal was as follows:

Some strange intuition – perhaps even the sweet voice of a saintly aunt - caused me to pull out the 7S, which Declarer won with the Ace.  Realising that he would probably have to ruff two clubs to make the contract, Declarer then called for the singleton club, my partner winning with the ace.  Partner played the spade queen, which held, as I played the 4 with the air of a man completing a routine peter.

Partner continued with the jack of spades.  Declarer shifted uneasily in his chair for an eternity.  He rose with the Ace of trumps, promoting a trump trick for partner.  If only the look on his face when my K of spades fell had could have been captured on film!  His stone-cold contract had gone one down.

Nearby, Satan and his pixies fell silent, realising they had been in the presence of something remarkable.

In the other room, free of pixies, Roger Whittaker made ten tricks in 3 NT.  A swing of 12 IMPs.  We won the match by only 2.

I flatter myself that it was not my first brilliancy.  Indeed, I clearly recollect an earlier one when in the Lower Sixth. But in the context of this match, my youthful triumph palls into insignificance.

Be assured, I will keep you informed about my further brilliancies.  [Enough – don’t think I shall be holding the front page – Ed.]

EBED of Roses for David and Jeremy

On 18 May, the club took part in the EBED Spring Sim Pairs.  540 pairs participated from 36 clubs.  David Dawson and Jeremy Fitzpatrick won the Selsdon session with a stonking 75.65%.

More stonkingly still, they were top nationally, scoring 77.21%, a full 7% above the pair in second place.

Although I begged Jeremy for an exclusive interview, he modestly declined. David graciously devolved all credit upon the young lady who drives his hired vehicle, one of the Muggridge Luxury Limousines fleet – without whom his achievement would have not been possible.

We need to talk about ….. overcalls

At some point in every session of bridge, you are likely to want to make a simple overcall of a one level opening suit bid whether by bidding a suit at the lowest level, doubling or bidding 1NT.  But when was the last time you discussed with your partner the principles upon which your bidding choices are made?

Do you have an agreement about how many high card points you need for bidding a suit at the lowest level?  If so, what is the agreement?

Do you automatically double if you have a specific number of points or greater?  If so, what is that specific number of points?

Does your double always show tolerance for any of the three unbid suits?  Is it promising a four card suit (or better) in one or both of the unbid majors, or – if the opening bid is 1H or 1S – a four card suit in the other major?  If not, what does your double show?

Do you have a partnership agreement always to bid a 5 card suit in preference to doubling, irrespective of the strength of your hand?

Or perhaps do you have a partnership agreement always to bid a 5 card major suit in preference to doubling, irrespective of the strength of your hand?

Or do you have an agreement to bid a 5 card suit (or maybe just a 5 card major suit) except when holding a hand of significant strength, in which case how is such significant strength defined?

Do you overcall a four card suit in any circumstances, and – if so – what are the circumstances?

If you and your partner give different answers to the questions above, you are likely to achieve less than would be the case if you were singing from the same hymn sheet!

Please consider the three examples below.

In each example, your right hand opponent bids 1D.

In Example A, you might pass, and then hear the opening bid passed out, your partner passing with eight points and a 4-3-2-4 shape, one diamond going one off and 2S being absolutely cold.  You might double, and hear partner bid 2C.  You might – stretching the arithmetic! - bid 1NT, and be rewarded by hearing partner bid 3NT with a thin 10 count, and seeing minus 200 entered on the bridgemate. Or you might trust to fortune by bidding the higher of your four card majors.

In Example B, do you double knowing the likelihood that you will hear 2H or 3H from partner?  And if not – what?

In Example C, do you bid 1H or double, or an outrageously risky 1NT?

In the next edition of Top Trump, a panel of Selsdon experts will explain their approach to overcalling, and set out how they would bid some sample hands.

Away from the table

Here is the news.  Hitler has occupied the Rhineland by Hitler in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles, a civil war has started in Spain, Franklin D. Roosevelt has been re-elected with a landslide majority.  Breaking news – British monarch prepares to abdicate.

Oh! – those piffling events of 1936.  But now the year’s big story - Frank Willson is born.  A very special child – there aren’t many Willsons with two “ls”.  Frank’s dad has done his best to increase the double-elled population, however. Frank is one of a sibling group of 13.  (Sadly, six of Frank’s siblings were to die in air-raids, five in one fell swoop, and Frank has no memories of them.)

Dad’s vigour in siring children was inversely linked to energy spent on nurturing the fruit.  Frank remembers him without affection.  Dad worked as a bookie’s runner – a hazardous occupation in the days when off-course betting was banned - and rarely did his family enjoy the benefit of the income.

Frank recalls the day he and younger brother Alec (then aged 8 and 7) received a message that his father had been badly beaten up, and to come and take him home.  They took their home-made trolley to Balham, discovered Dad looking as if he’d done three rounds with King Kong, and wheeled him the two miles back to Tooting.  Their mother gave him a glance, and told them to turn round and wheel Dad to hospital, where he spent three painful weeks.

It turned out that Mr Willson had welshed.  He had not placed the bets, hoping that the horses would not come in, and spent the money.  Clients had gone to the bookie to pick up their winnings, and were more than miffed.  Having dealt with the irate punters, the bookie forthwith organised summary and brutal justice.

Unlike her husband, Frank’s mum was a hard-working woman who did three jobs so she could support her family.  Like her husband, she did not show her children much affection.  Frank was evacuated at the start of the war, and she came to visit him only once.  When Frank returned “home”, it was like going to live with a stranger.

In about 1946, Mrs Willson decided that she could no longer cope with all her surviving offspring.  A Social Worker came to visit, and Mum nominated Frank and Alec to send to a Barnardo’s institution in Norfolk – the Watts naval training school.

Discipline was strict.  Reveille was at 6 am, lateness was not tolerated.  The age range of the boys was 9-16.

Predatory, testosterone-aroused adolescents discharged their urges on the younger boys, staff members presumably turning a Nelsonian blind eye to what was taking place on their watch. Frank himself was not abused sexually, although he was a frequent victim of the towel-flicking in the showers – not in any way a happy memory.

The naval school was closed when Frank was eleven, and he proceeded to Goldings, then a Barnardo's trade school in Hertfordshire, an altogether happier experience.  Insofar as growing up in a children's home is normal, this was one of the most normal periods of Frank's young life. Frank had to learn a trade, and of those from which he could choose, he plumped for shoe repairing.  He would have preferred to have gone for entrepreneurship, but this strangely was not on the Barnardo’s curriculum.

One of the perks of being a Barnardo's boy was that you had the chance of being a ballboy at Wimbledon, and the princely reward of 10 bob a day pocket money.  Frank enjoyed that perk for three consecutive years, and met many tennis greats of the early 50s such as Sedgman, Drobny and the immortal "Little Mo" Connolly.

The highlight was a singles match involving the American star, Budge Patty, the champion of 1950 and indeed the oldest living Wimbledon men’s champion.  Patty arrived in court for a match in which Frank was a ballboy, but there was no show from his opponent.  Patty motioned to Frank to knock up with him, and Frank – no shrinking violet even as a callow youth - obliged.  To Frank's delight, the moment was captured on Pathe news.

At 15, Frank left Goldings to pursue a shoe-repairing career, but this lasted a mere few months, punctuated by two serious episodes of gastric surgery, which were the cause of his early retirement from cobbling.  Work for the Post Office followed, and then came National Service.

During Frank’s period of protecting the empire, he consolidated his reputation as a sportsman, but this time on the rugby pitch.  The All Blacks were touring Hong Kong where Frank was stationed at the time, and an army team was hurriedly got together to give them a bit of practice. Never having played the sport before, Frank naturally put himself forward for the team, and managed to con the officers to give him a run-out for a few minutes, until it became only too apparent that he did not know a hooker from a half-back, at least that is his story.

Frank remembers a cushy time in the army working in the post-room, but once back in Blighty after inactive service, real life began.  Frank commenced work with Pye records, having already shown a talent for music even greater than that for sport by forming a skiffle group alongside Long John – Let the Heartaches Begin – Baldry.  Commencing as a press operator, he rose through the ranks and left as a production manager.  He had a whale of a time consorting with the likes of The Kinks, Petula Clark and Sandie Shaw.

Frank went on to form his own company, Willson Plastics, which had a long period of trading success, but ended unprofitably.  Some difficult times followed.  Frank got back on his feet, assisted notably by the late Roy Absalom, distinguished past Chairman of the Selsdon Bridge Club.  Frank did some decorating work for Roy.  Roy gave him recommendations, and Frank was able to build a thriving business as a self-employed decorator and gardener, retiring in 2002.

Married twice with one son and one grandchild, Frank – an attentive father and grandfather - lives with his second wife Shumei near Heathfield House.  Frank is close to his brilliant, entrepreneurial stepdaughter Susan Ma, a former finalist in The Apprentice.  Susan now manages and co-owns (with Alan Sugar) the perfume company, Tropic, originally set up by Shumei and Frank.  In the early days, Frank sold the wares at a stall in Camden Market, but it has now expanded to three factories, with a large number of salespeople.

Frank learnt bridge on a Bermudan holiday in the early 70s, and has been playing for about 45 years.  Frank’s first regular partner was Doug Grant.  You knew you had arrived at their table when you sensed a fug of cigarette smoke fighting to overcome the haze of alcohol.  Frank describes his bridge style as “gambler”, and therefore he hits it off best with Charles Marsh,  with whom he now plays at Bletchingley.  Frank speaks generously of his long-suffering Selsdon partner, Sue Muggridge, whom he commends – as well he might - for her kindness and patience.  Frank declares that the game of bridge has been “a life saver” for him.

Since those first two serious operations he had as a teenager, Frank has gone on to have significant surgery on fifteen further occasions, mostly on his stomach.  He carries ill-health without self-pity.

An intelligent man, Frank attained first-class honours in the school of hard knocks, negotiating his way along life’s highway with tenacity, charm and no doubt a smattering of low cunning, plenty of humour and not least kindness and greatness of heart.

Opening Bid

We have had a club magazine before but not for a very long time.   And it is certainly our first e-newsletter.   I have agreed to edit three editions.  Whether I continue depends on whether club members think the magazine is worth reading,  and the editor worthy of the burden of editing.

I coined the title “Top Trump” writing on American election day before polls closed.   I was guiltless of any intention to be prophetic or ironic,  and solemn readers can be reassured that the club is not in the business of endorsing American presidential candidates.

There will be a few regular features.   A club member will be profiled,  and who better to commence with than Bob Schad,  who has been doing his best to convince us – I am slow to be persuaded – that he is entering his tenth decade.  The cake that Pat Hore baked for Bob on 3 November certainly earned her the title of Selsdon Bake-Off champion,  although sweet-toothed members may hope that others will emulate her.   No-one will surpass.

Tony Cherrett will provide a column parading his new Chief Director’s hat.   Tony follows in the footsteps of Roger Fellows,  whom we have all frustrated for far too long by our refusal to comply with elementary exhortations.   Thank you,  Roger,  for your high standards and dedication to our club over several decades.   Happily,  Roger remains on the committee.

There will be a bidding/leads/plan the play quiz compiled by me,  headed by the inventive title “Comp”,  and judged by one of a panel of leading club players.   The lavish prize will be a free entry to a club duplicate session.   (Cries of awe and astonishment offstage.)

The problems are aimed at competent club players like ourselves,  who want to fine-tune our hand evaluation and improve our evaluation of bidding inferences.   You may enter as an individual,  but I would be delighted to receive “partnership” replies,  because having fruitful discussion between partners can lead to better bridge!   But please note that only one voucher will be awarded,  and will therefore be used to defray half the cost of each individual attendance the next time the winning partners are present at the club.

The Pairs Championship – the club’s annual Blue Riband event - takes place over two sessions on the 17 and 24 November.   Entry is only available to members of the Club.   It would really help the Director plan the event if you put your entry into the booking section of the website,  although this is not compulsory.   It may be necessary to play 27 boards on one or both sessions so there may be slightly later finishing times than usual.

Did you play Board 16 on 3 November?   Oh what a deal that was.   Dealer West passes,  and North opens 4H.   E/W are vulnerable,  and E holds singleton AH and nine spades headed by the top four honours.   I would have bid 4S holding 8 playing tricks,  on the basis that there was unlikely to be a defence to 4H.   Holding 10 playing tricks,  I ventured 5S.   Not good.   I just make the 10 tricks,  and 5H goes off.   Jagdish achieved a brilliant top,  bringing home 4Sx+2,  with former Ife champions not cashing their three tricks!

I Hope to Say This Only Once.....

A message from the Chief Director which prudent members will not wish to ignore!

The recent members’ survey revealed some significant concerns about late finishing.

The main cause is slow play!

14 minutes is allowed for 2 board rounds,  and 21 minutes for 3 boards.  One minute is allowed for the move.   One minute slippage per round can mean finishing 12 minutes late.

We could all play better if we had unlimited time to think and plan.   But … the game is time-restricted.

PLEASE,   PLEASE,   PLEASE,  PLEASE,  PLEASE:

Plan each bid before the auction reaches you.

If it becomes quickly clear during the auction – as often happens – that you will be or might be on lead,  turn your mind to what your lead might be:  you will be saving time and giving away less info to opponents by so doing.

If you are North or keeping a scorecard,  lead or put down dummy before recording the contract.

If you have finished,  leave the table immediately the move is called.

Don’t discuss the hands at the table when there is one or more board still to be played.

Where a table starts late,  it is the responsibility of all four players to catch up,  irrespective of where past guilt lies.   Pleas that blame is located elsewhere will fall on deaf ears!

Tony Cherrett

selsDon D power blows away opposition

David Dawson and Christine Dyer topped a strong field of 164 pairs in the Surrey Green Pointed Pairs at Guildford  held on 24 September.  They won each of their seven matches including one against England internationals Frances Hinden and Jeffrey Allerton - achieving a total of 106 VP’s out of 140.   What an outstanding achievement.

COMP NUMBER ONE

You may enter (by email to the Editor) as an individual or as a partnership.   A winning partnership will get one free voucher between them.  Entries by 23 November,  please.

For Questions 1-4,  you merely need to state what you deem to be the correct bid.   There is no implication that your bid will be the final bid in the auction.   You may if you wish add one sentence of explanation for your answer,  and this may be taken into account by Robin Clarke,  this month’s wise and upright judge,  in the event that a tie-break is needed.

In each question,  you are holding the West cards at an ordinary club duplicate evening.

AWAY FROM THE TABLE

Our oldest member,  Bob Schad,  was born on 2 November 1926 in Cheam.   Educated at Hurstpierpoint College and Christchurch,  Oxford,  Bob went on to teach Mathematics for 48 years at Whitgift School.   Bob thinks 48 years may be a record,  and if it is,  I guess there won’t be too many people seeking to take it from him.    For 51 years,  Bob has been married to Carole.   They have three children and three grandchildren.

12 when war was declared,  Bob had a relatively peaceful time at his Sussex boarding school while hostilities endured.   At 16,  he was enrolled into the Home Guard,  and recalls a training-ground exercise which entailed live grenades being tossed over a wall.    After Oxford,  he undertook National Service,  being commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the RAF,  and teaching Maths at the RAF College,  Cranwell.

Bob went up to Christchurch in 1945.   Oxford was a very different place from that which it had been in 1939.   Many of the students had done up to six years war service before taking up their place,  and bore a mindset with which their younger counterparts could only seek to empathise.   Oxford students were not completely exempt from the effects of post-war austerity:  Bob recalls that Willy,  the Steward of the Junior Common Room,  was world leader in ekeing out four ounces of butter to cover forty slices of bread!

Unsurprisingly,  given his athletic physique,  Bob has shone on the field of sport.   He was – according to former colleague David Elvin - a very mean competitor on the squash court.   But it is for hockey that he is best-known,  winning four caps for England in 1952,  and on the winning side on each occasion.   He continued to play hockey for the Cheam club well into his 50s.

David pays tribute to Bob’s generosity in giving time to extra-curricular activity at Whitgift.   He was Hockey coach,  he ran the air cadets for over 30 years,  rising to the rank of Wing Commander,  and - not least – he oversaw a significant development in school bridge.

Bob himself had learned bridge at school,  where he was a disciple of the great Ely Culbertson,  and went on to represent the university.   However,  he then was away from the game for many years,  eventually returning to teach an adult class in Selsdon.   Culbertson was now out,  and Acol in.   Bob continued with the class until he reached the age of 73,  and would probably still be teaching bridge now,  but the Head of the Continuing Education team in Croydon decided that Bob needed to make way for a younger instructor.   Surely a man of 73 is a spring chicken in bridge-playing terms!

Bob recounts his greatest bridge triumph with an appropriate modesty.   With David Elvin,  he won the Daily Telegraph worldwide sim pairs,  with a massive 83% score.   The other competitors in their heat were junior Whitgift schoolboys!   A beaming Bob was pictured in the paper a few days later collecting the huge trophy.

Bob joined the club in the mid-80s.  His first regular partner was Frank Willson,  from whom Bob acknowledges he learned a great deal.   In the last decade,  he has formed a relaxed,  companionable,  tea-swilling partnership with Simon Desorgher.   They wield a secret weapon – the Shadman convention – which will be one of Bob’s many contributions to posterity.

The amazing Bob plays golf,  bowls,  and goes Scottish Country Dancing three times each week.   Bob knows the steps of well over 100 dances,  each dance consisting of 32 bars with a change of formation every 8 bars.   Long may he retain the energy that would leave many a younger man reeling!

Bob,  Pat,  Roger and cake – 3 November 2016 – Bob at 90 years and one day.

Opening Bid

You have been waiting too long for TT4.  But we are now back, and with an array of new features to entertain, excite and arouse.  [Calm down, dear.]

Replacing the obviously unpopular competition, we have a Brains Trust.  And how fortunate we are that the brains in question are – at least in bridge terms – so formidable, their owners being David Dawson, Robin Clarke and Tony Cherrett.  The answers will not be scored or evaluated in TT, although I may seek in future articles to identify the principles which the experts share and the principles in respect of which they differ.

The first subject for the Brainy Ones has been Overcalls.  Please read the interesting answers; please then discuss those answers with your regular partner and fine-tune your own system.  And don’t hesitate to challenge our experts – they are big enough to take it.  You can email comments and questions to me so that the great overcalling debate can continue.  And a big thank you to David, Robin and Tony for giving up their time to contribute to the Brains Trust.

Our great club celebrated its 85th birthday in October 2017.  I challenge any reader to prove to me that any other club in the country can boast such a proud record of continuous activity. To mark this anniversary, I have commenced a series of articles about the history of the club, drawing initially on the handwritten minutes of the early AGMs. It is sad that many clubs and county bridge associations (including Surrey) have been much more casual than Selsdon about the retention of records, and much bridge history has thereby been lost.

The fourth member of the club to be profiled in “Away from the Table” is Pat Smith.  Pat expressed surprise that I could not find a more interesting member to write about.  I am confident that you will read the article and confirm that I made a good call.

Warm congratulations to David Elvin and Rosemarie Thompson for their performance in the British Summer Simultaneous Pairs on 27 July.  They achieved 73%, winning within the club by an eye-watering margin of 17%.  Even better, they came third in the whole country!

Of course, all TT readers regularly visit the News Page on the website.  But you won’t mind being reminded – and it cannot be repeated too often – that Anton Mauve and his wife Jessica have been awarded the EBU Tom Bradley award for their drive, determination and enthusiasm in starting and fostering school bridge in the West Kent area.  Anton, your fellow members acclaim your community spirit, and applaud your success.

Please don’t forget our Blue Riband event – the Pairs Championship – which takes place this year over two weeks on 16 and 23 November.  There is no steward for this event.

BRAINS TRUST – OVERCALLING OPPONENT’S 1C, 1D, 1H, 1S

Q1  Do you have an agreement about how many high card points you need for an overcall of a suit at the lowest level?  If so, what is the agreement?

DD:     No.  What my partner expects varies greatly with context – a two level overcall when vulnerable is highly constructive, a non vulnerable overcall with a passed partner might show little other than that I want my suit led.  Bids will say more about playing strength than pure points.

RC:     Nominally around 9-14 points, but taking into account losing trick count (usually 7) and quality of suit.  The main consideration for quality of suit is whether I am comfortable with partner leading an honour: overcalling with Qxxxx and a 9 count is unlikely to be a good idea.

TC:  8+ one level 10+ 2 level. After partner has passed you can take more of a risk.

Q2  Do you automatically double if you have a specific number of points or greater?  If so, what is that specific number of points?

DD:     No. My minimum is a (suitable) opening hand, but I can overcall anything less than Acol 2 strength and bid Michaels or UNT on 5/5 hands with no upper strength limit.

RC:     Usually about 11+ points assuming at least 11 cards in the unbid suits.

TC:      No. Partner must have confidence of at least 3 cards opposite. In the current environment, Responder will raise the opening bid to the level of fit even without any values. So it is important that all bids describe your holdings. To double automatically is losing bridge.

Q3  Does your double always show tolerance for any of the three unbid suits?  Is it promising one or both of the unbid majors over 1C or 1D, or the unbid major if the opening bid is 1H or 1S?  If not, what does your double show?

DD: Yes. Qx / xxx or better in all unshown suits, the only exceptions being hands too strong for a NT overcall (19+) or simple overcall (Acol 2), which can be shown on the next round almost regardless of what happened.

RC: On the basis that double is 11+ points and 11 cards in unbid suits, then would usually have at least one four card major.  However, with a higher point count and an unsuitable hand for a 1NT overcall (15-18), double may be the only course of action even without 11 cards in unbid suits.  In these situations, one ideally needs an escape bid if only holding two cards in the suit partner may bid.

TC:      Double shows opening values, at least tolerance (3 cards) for the unbid suits, no more than two of the bid suit and no five card major.  If either you or your partner has passed, double can be bid with fewer points especially if 4441 (or 4432) shape.  There may be need to improvise with a very strong hand, but rarely.

Q4  Do you have a partnership agreement always to bid a 5 card suit in preference to doubling, irrespective of the strength of your hand?

DD:     No.

RC:     No. I would normally double if holding a four card major in conjunction with a five card suit.  However, if I am not strong enough to make a further bid in the event partner chooses my short suit, I am likely to prefer a simple overcall of the five card suit.

TC:      A Double says no 5 card major.

Q5       Or perhaps do you have a partnership agreement always to bid a 5 card major suit in preference to doubling, irrespective of the strength of your hand?

DD:     No.

RC:     No – covered in answer to Q.4 above.

TC:      Yes.

Q6       Or do you have an agreement to bid a 5 card suit (or maybe just a 5 card major suit) except when holding a hand of significant strength, in which case how is such significant strength defined?

DD:     No.  With a hand suitable either to double or overcall in a major, suit quality, overall shape and where I think the auction will go all factor into the choice.

RC:     Generally with 15-16+, I will double first then bid five card suit (depending on partner’s response) to show that my double was in the upper range.

TC:      No.

Q7       Do you overcall a four card suit in any circumstances, and – if so – what are the circumstances?

DD:     Yes.  Not that often, most commonly with a passed partner. Almost always to direct the lead – e.g. AKJx.

RC:     Very rarely.  The rare occasion is likely to be with a holding such as AKQx or AKJx either if the bidding indicates you would to suggest a lead to partner or there is a strong possibility you would otherwise lose the chance to find your likely fit.

TC:      Yes - possible for a lead when partner has passed.

Q8       Your opponent opens with a suit bid at the one level.  You have very significant length and strength in opponent’s suit.  What do you bid?

DD:     Pass, unless the rest of the hand is very strong.

RC:     Always pass, but at a later point in the auction could decide to bid the suit naturally.

TC:      Pass or with 16-18 bid 1NT.

Q9:      Would your answers to the above question differ if you are overcalling with the fourth hand after two passes?

DD:     Not fundamentally, but there are many more hands I’d feel were too strong to pass out against a NV opponent.

RC:     Still generally pass, but if strong and vulnerable may decide to bid 1NT to find a game which may score better than the opposition going down.

TC:      Now 1NT is 11-14 and Double might be made with a strong No-Trump.

Q10 Bidding Examples:

Please state what you would bid with the six hands below after your left hand opponent has opened 1D followed by two passes.

Example A

♠ KQJ10

KQJ10

Q10x

Qx

DD: Double.  Planning to say nothing else if my partner shows minimum with clubs, make a single raise of a minimum bid in either major, or invite game facing any more positive noise.

RC: Double.  If partner bids 2C probably not a disaster.

TC: 1H.  Not ideal.  At least partner will make a good lead.

Example B

♠ AQ107

A

AQ5

♣ A10643

DD: Double.  Planning to bid NT at the lowest level facing hearts, showing a hand too strong for 1NT direct, or to game force clubs or spades.

RC: Double.  Escape route available if partner bids hearts.

TC: 3NT seems the best try.

Example C

♠ 963

AKQ104

KJx

Kx

DD: 1H.  Planning to bid 2NT to invite game if partner raises to 2H (could be very weak) or force game via 3NT if they bid another suit (in my system, shows values and usually fits hearts) or raise more strongly.

RC: Double.  Strong enough to bid hearts over any response by partner.

TC: 1H. Then bid No Trumps.

Example D

♠ AQ854

AK7

Q4

♣ KQ4

DD: Double.  Planning to bid diamonds facing a bid in clubs or hearts, showing the extra strength and suggesting a lack of clear direction.

RC: Double. Again strong enough to bid spades, but if partner did jump in hearts, a game in hearts would look the best.

TC: 1S, what else?

Example E

♠ AK

AQJ

K2

♣ 1098732

DD: 1NT.  Planning to let partner make all subsequent decision.  (I would also open this hand 1NT with one fewer ace – a bad 6 card minor suit is OK with me.)

RC: 1NT and be thankful if partner makes a transfer to a major!

TC: 2C - far too strong for 1NT and only 1 stop.

Example F1

AJ10

KJx

♣ AKJ10983

DD: Double.  (This is unaffected by what 3C would be.)  Planning to change suit into clubs to show at least an Acol opening 2.

RC: Probably 2C and catch up later as auction looks unlikely to finish at this point.

TC: 3C (Intermediate) trying to stop the opponents finding their Spade fit. It will be a major miracle if I see a hand like this in my lifetime!!

1                     If you do not yourself play a system where a bid of 3C is either weak, intermediate or two-suited, please advise the best bid in such circumstances.

I Hope to Say This Only Once.....

Away from the table – Pat Smith

Pat was born in 1937 half-way between the abdication crisis and the Munich agreement.  She declines to take responsibility for either.

Her family were of farming stock from the Lincolnshire market town of Bourne.  On her father’s side (the Hollinsheads), they were butchers, and on her mother’s (the Harts) bakers, but much genealogical research has yet to find any trace of ancestral candlestick making.

By the date of Pat’s birth, Father had a butcher’s shop in Rugby.  Making up the family were her parents, her brother and Maternal Grandmother Hart, the latter being a mistress of the art of baking.  They had a large garden, in which they kept chickens, and also an allotment.

During the war – a relatively quiet period in Pat’s life – they frequently visited Grandfather Hollinshead’s small cattle farm.  Perhaps it is not surprising, given what has been set out above, that Pat did not notice rationing quite as much as her contemporaries.

Pat remembers the harsh winter of 1947, the worst of the last century, particularly recalling that when walking at night-time, the white of the snow lent the air a curious glow of light.

Pat comes from a close family.  The adults had conservative social views that would have been shared by many of their generation.  Pat’s mother went to grammar school.  Pat herself went to grammar school, where she enjoyed Maths and was Captain of Netball.  Pat’s parents did not see any useful purpose to Pat staying on in the sixth form.  Pat herself states that she harbours no feeling of frustration at the curtailment of her education.

So it was, that in the year of our Queen’s coronation, Pat Hollinshead got her first job – as a payroll clerk with Rugby Portland Cement, a large local employer.  The complex pattern of shift work which took place required Pat to stretch her computational skills, but she was more than up to the challenge.

It was on a fateful evening just three years later that Pat washed her hair and put on her best dress for a fish and chip supper at the Rugby Young Conservatives.  Attending that evening was a young man of 22 fresh from university and National Service.  Pat stated with a little emphasis (but perhaps as much emphasis as ever she chooses to muster) that the young man in question attended with a recreational rather than an ideological purpose.  Across a crowded room, the young man saw Pat, and sixty-one years later, Pat and Harvey continue to share their lives.

Harvey was and is a little bit of a freethinker.  You may think (I cannot possibly comment) that the freethinker – such is the power of love - had quite an effect on the girl with the conventional upbringing.  In any event, in 1958 – flouting bourgeois morality in a way that did not entirely take her family’s fancy – Pat followed her sweetheart to London, the location of his employment as a copywriter for Kodak.  Initially, they shared a house with two friends, and then a few weeks before their wedding day on 30 September 1959, they moved into a rented flat in Putney, paying two pounds and ten bob on a weekly basis for the privilege.

Pat had obtained a job with the publishers of Encyclopaedia Britannica when she first came to London, once again as a payroll clerk, and she continued in post until her first child was born in 1965.  She thoroughly enjoyed the work, not least one of the perks, which was that she got to attend the “stylish” lunches which the publishers regularly held in destinations such as the Dorchester.

Pat and Harvey had moved from Putney to Wallington, and then in 1972 they moved to their current home in Purley.  Both were keen tennis players, but having viewed their new property in the dark, it was with pleasure that they found out that Serendipity had placed the house opposite the Purley Bury Tennis Club.  Harvey – a mean sportsman – remains an active member of that club, albeit temporarily indisposed.  Pat retired a few years ago.

The gregarious Harvey brought many work colleagues home to dinner.  Pat is a fine cook, and was able to step up to the plate literally and metaphorically.  They made a host of dear friends during this period with many of whom they continue to socialise.  Pat and Harvey enjoy entertaining and being entertained, and the conversation that goes with eating and drinking, they share a love of books, theatre and art, and Pat recalls with pleasure many culturally and physically active holidays.

Not a woman who heats up food in the microwave, Pat continues to display her culinary repertoire.  Taught by Grandma Hart, who flourished to the age of almost 102, Pat is able to number baking among her cookery skills.  Harvey buys her on her birthday each year a new cookery book, a much looked forward-to event which continues to stimulate an extension of Pat’s gastronomic horizons.  Pat’s favourite food writers are Jane Grigson and Alan Davidson, who provide interesting narrative as well as delicious recipes.  She believes that the best food is cooked with good, natural ingredients, and anyone who seeks to persuade her to jettison butter and cream will be wasting their energy, although she confesses that she now scatters saturated fats with a little less abundance.

Pat in Musee d’Orsay circa 1986 modelling the dress she created

Another of Pat’s skills – also handed down by Grandma Hart - is dressmaking, She makes most of her own dresses, and in the photograph captioned left is wearing a dress of her own creation tastefully combining pale blues and greens.  Harvey frequently brought back fabrics from work trips abroad.  Pat fondly recalls a dress she made of a brown (with a bit of yellow) soft wool fabric Harvey brought back from Germany.  (Harvey, you are setting the benchmark for husbands impossibly high!)

Somehow, Pat has found time to play bridge.  A few months into married life, she told Harvey that she wanted to learn the game.  Harvey borrowed books from the library such as Ian Macleod’s “Bridge is an Easy Game” – a misleading title, Pat observes – and read them and tutored Pat.

Pat considers that the beauty of bridge socially is that it takes the pressure off conversation, gives a structure to weekends with friends, and avoids arguments about politics.  Pat and Harvey hosted bridge parties at home with two or three tables, and where the bridge was interspersed with eating and drinking.  Instead of arguing about politics, they were able to argue about the house bridge rules.

Pat’s long association with Selsdon began in the 1970s and marked her introduction to duplicate bridge.  The instigator was Paul Norris, whom Harvey met at the tennis club, now a Selsdon member himself, but who at that time plied his skills at South Croydon, which is where Pat and Harvey started.  Paul lent them “Card Play Technique” by Victor Mollo and Nico Gardener, a book to which they still refer.  Pat enjoys the story which is related in an obituary of Gardener, who was noted for flamboyant apparel and mauve carnation in buttonhole.  At a bridge convention in Dublin, someone asked Mollo how they had travelled:  “I flew with Aer Lingus” came the reply, “Nico was sent by Interflora.”

Pat enjoys the intellectual challenge and stimulus of bridge.  Not competitive herself, she views competitive intensity with a certain wry amusement.  Asked to describe one good and one bad thing about Selsdon, Pat declared positively that the standard of play was high, and passed on anything negative.

Pat also recollected with affection the weekends she and Harvey enjoyed at Worthing, which were organised by Rosemary and Roger Fellows.

Pat and Harvey’s two sons (with some help from daughters-in-law) have produced two grandsons and two grand-daughters ranging from the age of nine to twenty.  They are a close and supportive family, but Pat added firmly that she and Harvey hold the view that children must have the time and space to develop their own independent lives and identities.

Pat’s intellectual curiosity and vigour continues to be strong.  She particularly enjoys History, and attends a History class run by the Workers’ Educational Association at Sanderstead Methodist Church.

Pat is a modest lady with much to be proud about.  With her shy but warm smile, strong sense of humour, and holding generous perceptions about humankind, she carries the values and principles which she and Harvey share with no little determination and steadfastness.

LEST WE FORGET, LEST WE FORGET – a forage into the Selsdon archives

Part One:  1932-1939

In October 1932, Selsdon was a prosperous district in North Surrey.  The concept of Greater London did not exist, and Selsdon was outside the bounds of Croydon, then a county borough of Surrey.  Wikipedia states of Selsdon: “The leafy suburb was developed during [the 1920s and 1930s], and is remarkable for its many Art deco houses.”  Perhaps we can infer that many of the new inhabitants were middle-class professionals, some of them seeking stimulating recreational pursuits.

It was on 4 October of 1932 that our story begins.  17 Selsdon residents assembled at 8 pm in The Tea Room, Worth’s Café, 4 The Broadway, Selsdon, in order to consider whether “the social activities of the district should be augmented by the formation of a Bridge Club”.  If they had not taken an affirmative decision, our story would have terminated very abruptly!

The first Chairman was Mr W. Fisher of Selsdon Park Farm.  (I know not what the “W” stood for – it was many years before a forename is recorded in the club minutes.)  Mr Fisher may possibly have been a working farmer.  Forty years later, my dad and I were introduced to the club by the then Treasurer, Max Krasner, who until the late 1960s had been a very successful poultry farmer in Selsdon Vale.

Mr Waller of Littleheath Road was elected Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, and Mrs Astington, Mr Willson and Mr Pincott were elected to make up the committee of five.  Mr Hobden had been nominated for the committee, but withdrew his name citing inability to spare the time.  F.J. (“Fred”) Hobden was to remain a luminous figure for the next forty-five years of the life of the club, and was one of the founding fathers of the Surrey County Bridge Association.

The first annual subscription is recorded as a “nominal two and six”.  (Young members – that is 12½ p.)  12½ p was about 3% of the average weekly salary of £4.  Average weekly earnings in 2016 were £539 pw.  If current Selsdon members were to pay a subscription based on 3% of average weekly earnings, we should be paying £16 instead of our nominal £5.

It is probable that at the outset rubber bridge was played.  The word “duplicate” is absent from these pre-war records.  It is likely that members often or perhaps always in these early years “cut in” for partners.

The Selsdon bridge universe chugged smoothly onwards in the course of a turbulent decade.  The minutes of a committee meeting in September 1933 record a draft set of club rules.  These rules make clear that the club was a contract bridge club. The committee had the power to suspend members.  Play was to commence at 7.30 pm and cease at 11 pm.  There was an interval for refreshments.  Players cut for tables and partners.

These first rules were approved at the AGM on 6 October 1933, held at the Sanctuary Tea Rooms, Addington Road.  The Chairman reported that “the majority of the members had thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the past season”.  The Secretary/Treasurer reported that there had been a “gratifying” increase in membership from 17 to 46, and that the accounts now showed a balance of three pounds, thirteen shillings and eight pence.  It was agreed that the rules be “embodied in a membership card and a copy issued to every member”.

Mr Coleman was elected Auditor in 1933, and Hon Secretary and Treasurer in 1935.  Mr Fisher (still Club Chair) paid a handsome tribute in 1937 to Mr and Mrs Coleman stating that the club’s success was “undoubtedly due to [their] combined efforts”.

Very long-standing members of the club will remember Stan Coleman.  As a young member, I was “cut in” with Stan in a club duplicate, and counted myself fortunate to have obtained a very kind, generous and good-humoured partner!  Stan donated a trophy at some point for the club’s individual championship, a competition which was discontinued in the 1980s, I think.

The club saw a 12% drop in its balances in 1936 – down to £6:13:8 from the previous year.  The rental for the hall had increased from three and six to ten bob per week!  Mr Coleman reported on the relative popularity of the Pairs Tournament evenings.  This may suggest that members preferred to play with a regular partner than to cut in.  It was agreed that a “progressive pairs tournament” take place on months where there was a fifth Monday.

In the Minutes of the 1938 AGM it is recorded that a motion proposed by Mr Hobden was carried unanimously, the decision being that “an Individual and other tournaments be arranged on “cut in” evenings.  These were to be organised and run by Mr Hobden, who had been elected to the new position of Deputy Chairman.

And so we come to the AGM held at the Sanctuary Tea Rooms on 29 November 1939.  Of course, Mr Chamberlain had come on the radio on 3 September with quite an important announcement.  But in November, Britain was still in the period of what is known as the “phoney war”, and perhaps it is unsurprising that the war gets not a mention.  Membership had slightly decreased from its 1938 height of 60.  Tournaments were proving a very popular feature of the club’s events, thanks to the efforts of Mr Hobden, and apparently Mr Coleman spent quite a lot of time on the telephone drumming up support to the extent that members were most concerned that he would be out of pocket.  They therefore – against his protestations – allocated Mr Coleman £1 per annum for the “phone account”.  Prize money was also discussed.  It had been four shillings for first prize (perhaps £20 at today’s prices) and two and six for second.  This would be adjusted to reflect the table money available on a particular night to ensure that costs were always covered.  What table money was payable is unstated.

And on those last solemn notes, the blackout curtain is drawn, the next AGM taking place on 24 September 1945.
