It's time for an update on club activities. Your volunteers and trustees have continued to support our activities in so many ways, that it is difficult for me to thank each of you individually, so I hope a general "Thank You" is acceptable to you all.

Congratulations to Sue Matthews and Elizabeth Dunford, joint winners of the Jordan Cup which was combined with the Strawberry Fayre. (It is an individual competition but they scored exactly the same % to the nearest 1/100th of a percentage point. Hopefully our signwriter can cope when their names are added to the roll of honour). The event was ably directed by our newly qualified county director David Dunford, congratulations to him too on his distinction in his assessment.
Whilst mentioning individuals, I would like to welcome Jonathan Jacobs to the Trustees group, he was co-opted in May. I am sure that he will be a valuable member of the group, and we will certainly be drawing on his experience.
Several Trustees have completed an online Defibrillator Training course. Hopefully they will never be called upon to use their knowledge. If anyone would like to take the (short) course, let me know and I will email the relevant information.
The club hosted the NCBA (County) AGM, and I am trying to liaise with them to arrange a date for a Blue Point event.

Andrew Scott (and assistants) have run the "Bridge Taster Sessions" as advertised. The first sessions were well supported.
Improver lessons will once again be organised and run by Dave Nattrass. Starting on October 2nd. Full details will be posted on the website nearer the starting date.

In my last newsletter I asked for interested parties to vote in a poll regarding a potential return of a Saturday drive. The results were a clear indication that, at the moment their is not sufficient interest to have a regular viable event either online or face to face.

Our next big event is the Scott/Brindley cup. It will be the first time this new annual event will be run. Sunday September 7th 2pm. Anyone with an NGS of 7 or less is invited to enter. The entry form will be on the club noticeboard from today, or you can enter by email. (I might be able to sort direct online entry too, just a bit of tweaking of our website needed). Hopefully all of you who have been taught by Graham and/or Andrew will take the opportunity to become the first recipient of the trophy, and the first name on the board. (Don't worry if you don't know your NGS, there is a list on the noticeboard, and it can easily be checked online).

The next Trustee meeting is September 6th. The suggestions book, or an email are the routes to use if you have anything that you would like to be considered.

One final 'plea'. The county team of 8 league is starting in September. I know they would welcome new team(s). If there is a group of you who are thinking "maybe...", why not enter and give it a go. You would be playing against players of similar experience and trepidation. Contact me for details.
Yours,
Phil Gross

Hello, Hopefully you are enjoying the weather! Bridge is continuing at the club and online thanks to the hard work behind the scenes of our dealers and directors. I would like to say a personal Thank You. Your efforts are appreciated by the many, even if not very publicly. The new stools have been successful, but I would like to remind you that the board in play should be visible to all players at all times. The roof repairs are nearing completion and your Trustees will investigate redecoration of the bar area. We in negotiations with the council regarding the car park gates.

The Garden Cities Team did well in the National Competition (details on the county website). Our team of 4 event was well received and was a great day, thanks to David D for his organisation. Hopefully there be more such events in the future? Congratulations to those of you who have been promoted in the EBU ranking system. Details are on our website.

Our next special event is the Strawberry Fayre on July 20th. Please enter by completing the entry form at the club, or by email. The catering team need to know numbers attending. Entries for the inaugural Scott/Brindley trophy on September 7th will be invited from the beginning of August. Open to players of NGS 2 to 7. Which pair will be the first name on the new honours Board? You have to be in it to win it !

Our Wednesday evening drive for new players is thriving. Great work by Gerry M and Elizabeth D and their team. Several pairs have moved to the Thursday evening drive and have had good experiences. Hopefully the Wednesday drive attendance will be boosted by the beginners from our classes. Our Bridge Taster Session in July and August (run by Andrew S) are advertised, See Andrew if you would like to be involved or could help on the day. The bridge improvers sessions run by Dave N will recommence in the Autumn, watch for information on the website.

Your trustees are keen to investigate whether there is an appetite for the return of a Saturday Evening Drive. I think a minimum of 5 tables would be viable. The major problems would be the dealing of the boards and the appointment of directors. It could be online, face to face, and weekly. To gauge interest I have created a poll. Just tick the boxes if you are interested. If you have no interest, just ignore the poll. Hopefully obvious what the options are, the link is -

The County has an annual Teams of 8 competition. It runs from September to March. Matches are approximately once a month and local teams can play face to face (online being an option). You need maybe 10 to 12 players to cover eventualities. If we could generate enough interest to enter 3 or 4 new teams, you would play in your own division against all the new teams. Matches could be held at the club. The event is entirely free with the club paying entry fees to the County association. The first step on the ladder to enjoying team play.
