Bridge on BBC Radio 4

Following the recent spate of news about bridge on the radio, the "You and Yours" program on BBC Radio 4 on 25th Jan had a section about families and friends playing bridge during lockdown. The program has a section with Chris Mower, EBTA Teacher for West Hants Bridge School, and how his daughter Ellie has joined his online bridge lessons during lockdown, along with many other beginners as a way to keep in touch.

You can listen to the episode on the BBC Radio 4 website, the interview with Chris Mower starts at just after the 6 minute mark.

If you would like to learn bridge, please use our online Teachers Directory to find classes near you.

Dear Dave and Team

On behalf of all the members of The Inner Wheel Club of Hazel Grove , I would like to thank The Manchester Bridge Club for agreeing to partner us in our recent charity bridge match in aid of St. Ann’s Hospice .

I, personally, am very grateful to you and your team, for all the exceptional help you have given me in setting up and running the event.

I am delighted to be able to inform you, that, thanks to your generosity,   together with that of your members and everyone who took part, we have so far raised the wonderful sum of  £740.

All of us know how lucky we are in having St. Ann’s Hospice, the ‘Jewel in the Crown ‘of end of life and respite care in our region.

In these challenging times for fundraising, we are proud that, because of your help, we will be able to make a much needed contribution to its work.

Best wishes

Ann Wood

PLEASE TEXT - NOT PHONE

The intellectual value of texting (essay)

IF YOU WANT TO GET HOLD OF DAVE DEBBAGE CAN YOU PLEASE TEXT on 07717 252114 RATHER THAN PHONE UNLESS VERY URGENT.

He is finding it difficult to deal with the quantity of phone calls that he receives especially when he is also playing.

Texts are much easier for him to organise amd he will deal with them as quickly as possible. Thankyou

PLAYING WITH ROBOTS

Robots | DroneBot WorkshopPLEASE TAKE NOTE....

....OF WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN PLAYING WITH OR AGAINST A ROBOT!

1. Partners of robots cannot explain anything other than what the robot says - so it is no good asking them for an explanation !

2. Anyone who plays with a robot has to play the robot's system - robots cannot adapt!

3. Please have patience with partners who play with robots.

4. Robots cannot normally give undos,

5. You cannot always claim against a robot and will need to play the hand out.

6. Robots do not always have exactly what they say - but don’t expect the robot's partner to advise otherwise!

Stay Safe ♥ Stay HealthyDear Members - Thank you so much for all of your support to keep our wonderful bridge club going.

It's been a hard transition for all of us from what we know and love to playing on-line and, as I'm sure you realise, we have all had to work seven days a week to ensure that sessions run smoothly and that as many players as possible can be included. I am also very impressed with how so many of you have been able to join in - it's been quite a change all round!

Manchester County Bridge are running duplicates as a club and as we are fighting to keep afloat during Covid-19  we need you all to play with us rather than them to be sure that you will have a club to come back to!

Much friendship and support as always

David

RAY'S "JOG" FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS

RAY ASHLEIGH'S AMAZING RETIREMENT  "JOG"

https://exrayraylejog.home.blog

"I wanted to do some walking after I retired and, in what may turn out to be a mad moment, I thought it would be a good idea to walk from Lands End to John O’Groats (LeJog).  This is a well known charity walk, often done on roads (e.g. by Ian Botham).  There are a number of books and blogs that describe the walk cross country which increases the distance from 874 miles to 1100 or more depending on the route. The route can be done, of course, from South to North or North to South (becoming JogLe!).  The advantages of LeJog include walking with the prevailing wind and (rain!) coming from behind the walker, hopefully I will be fitter by the time I get to the Pennine Way and the Highlands and a new walking route between Inverness and John O’Groats should be complete in 2020 (currently most walkers use the A9)."

COVID19

Looks like LEJOG part 2 is off this year. In theory I could camp and cook my own food en route I don’t know whether campsites will be open, and communal washing and toilet facilities are hardly self isolating. Wild camping is theoretically possible but is illegal in England, difficult in central Scotland but I will explore this. If I do this there will not be a blog as I won’t have internet access or charging facilities for my electronics.

Favoured option at present is to stock the car up (or use the trains) and bag some Munro’s as well has some of the lower but still beautiful Scottish hills. Or the Cape Wrath trail or Knoydart (avoiding the village at the tip of the peninsula) which is self isolating in the extreme!

Stay safe everyone and the blog will continue in 2021
