World Championships
The World Championships are being held in Wuhan, China from 14th-28th September.
England has a team in each of the four events: Open, Women, Mixed and Senior.
Manchester players involved are John Holland and Alan Mould in the Seniors, Catherune Draper in the Womens and Michael Byrne in the Mixed.
Good luck to all the teams.
Some matches will be on BBO.

Update Friday - Seniors reach Final in Wuhan!

The World Bridge Championships is now down to the final two teams in each series, and we're very proud that our Seniors team will be one of those fighting for a gold medal.

They had an up-and-down match against the Netherlands and were trailing overnight, but a very big fourth set saw them open up a lead that they didn't let go. They'll be facing Denmark in the final.

The Women conceded against Sweden, after going 95 IMPs down with 16 boards to go. They'll now play off for a bronze medal against the Netherlands.

The Mixed team fought all the way to the end and were starting to close on the USA, but ran out of time and lost by 28 IMPs. They'll play Romania in their bronze medal match.

Sadly, the Open team did not reach the Semi-finals stage. In the Quarter-finals they gave the very strong USA 1 a good fight, and were leading for most of the match, but the Americans finished strongly and won by 33 IMPs.

The final matches start on Friday, so good luck to our seniors!

....AND FINALLY

In the Seniors final England lost to Denmark, therefore getting a silver medal.  Congratulations to the team especially John and Alan who played every board in the knock out phase and most of the qualifying matches.
The Women won their bronze medal match in a dramatic finish, overtaking the Netherlands on the last board, many congratulations to Catherine and the team.

The Mixed Team got close to overhauling Romania in the last set when Michael and Fiona bid and made two slams not bid by the opponents, but our other pair pressed too hard on a couple of boards and Romania won by 24.  Congratulations to all the team who have done very well to finish fourth in the inaugural World Mixed Teams.

Bridge Team on Only Connect

This Monday sees a team of bridge players take on the challenging quiz show that is Only Connect.

Fresh from the Junior Squad, players Kyle Lam and Toby Nonnenmacher are joined by their non-bridge playing friend Isi Bogod, to form "The Suits", a team name suggested by the producers of the show in a nod to the bridge players. Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, the show consists of a tournament-type format in which teams compete by finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues. The team need to win two matches from three to reach the quarter finals.

The show airs on Monday 2nd September at 8pm on BBC2.

Pachabo

Congratulations to the team of John Holland, Alan Mould, Michael Byrne and Michael Newman who retained the Pachabo Trophy (inter-county teams of four) over the weekend of 8-9th June at Coventry.  Manchester were in the top four throughout the event, towards the end they were vying with Hants& Isle of Wight for the top spot.  Hants & Isle of Wight won their last match by a comfortable margin.  Although Manchester lost their last match by the narrowest margin they held on to the top spot by 1.5 points.  This continues Manchester's fine record in this event with the third win since 2015, the other two years they finished second.

Senior Team wins Gerard Faulkner Salver

The winners of the Seniors Knockout competition for the Gerard Faulkner Salver are Norman Selway, Brian Senior (Captain), Sandra Penfold, Tony Forrester and Paul Hackett (pictured, left to right).

In the final, the first time champions defeated the team of Malcolm Pryor (Captain), Alan Mayo, David Muller and Ed Scerri by 44 IMPs.

Buffett Cup

The 2019 Buffett Cup took place in China this year, in the southern coastal city of Haikou, capital of Hainan Province.

Starting on 24th April and running until 28th April, the competition included a team from Europe, the United States and China, each team consisting of 8 players. The Buffett Cup is similar to the prestigious Ryder Cup of golf and Davis Cup of tennis. Each squad has a number of players who compete in multiple formats. The outcome of the event is determined by the aggregate results of the segments.

First held in 2006, the Buffett Cup consists of pairs, teams, and individual competitions. The event is named after world-renowned businessman Warren Buffett, lifelong bridge devotee and competitor.

This year there were two English Pairs playing for Europe:

EBED Teacher's Course has celebrity guests!

The students at the latest EBED Teaching Course at Stretford Bridge Club were surprised to discover two members of the popular quiz show Eggheads were at the club at the same time.  Eleven students from local and far-flung places (two from Guernsey and one from Scotland) were all learning to become EBU bridge teachers under EBU tutor Mike Hickling as well as being fed and watered by Stretford BC Catering Manager Sheila Reynolds.
The two TV quizzers: Pat Gibson, currently the top quizzer in the country and the world and Dave ‘Tremendous Knowledge’ Rainford were taking part in the Quizzing Circuit monthly American Grand Prix quiz under the proctorship of Club Secretary Dave Tilley.  If you are interested in quizzing and would like to come and try a British or American Grand Prix quiz (held in Warrington on the first or second Saturday), contact Dave at tilsit@btinternet.com.  Entry is free for first-timers and many of the popular TV quizzers take part in the local heat from time to time.

England fifth at European Mixed Teams

The England team have finished fifth at the European Mixed Teams Championship in Lisbon, Portugal. It was an up-down-campaign that kept their supporters guessing until the very end. A great start, a fairly quiet couple of days in the middle that left them in danger of missing out, and a superb finish where they won seven out of the last eight matches. They have now qualified for the World Championships in Wuhan, China, in September. Congratulations to all the team!
