Pachabo

Congratulations to the team of John Holland, Alan Mould, Michael Byrne and Michael Newman who retained the Pachabo Trophy (inter-county teams of four) over the weekend of 8-9th June at Coventry.  Manchester were in the top four throughout the event, towards the end they were vying with Hants& Isle of Wight for the top spot.  Hants & Isle of Wight won their last match by a comfortable margin.  Although Manchester lost their last match by the narrowest margin they held on to the top spot by 1.5 points.  This continues Manchester's fine record in this event with the third win since 2015, the other two years they finished second.

Rare Bridge Mention on Virgin Radio

Yesterday morning during the The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky on Virgin Radio, Chris Evans and his sports reporter Vassos Alexander, gave a glowing review of bridge. When talking about improving memory and keeping your mind active they said that bridge is the best game in the world ever to offset Alzheimer’s, with lots of people now taking up the game.

If you would like to listen to again, please use the link below. The bridge mention is at approximately 8.10am

Buffett Cup

The 2019 Buffett Cup took place in China this year, in the southern coastal city of Haikou, capital of Hainan Province.

Starting on 24th April and running until 28th April, the competition included a team from Europe, the United States and China, each team consisting of 8 players. The Buffett Cup is similar to the prestigious Ryder Cup of golf and Davis Cup of tennis. Each squad has a number of players who compete in multiple formats. The outcome of the event is determined by the aggregate results of the segments.

First held in 2006, the Buffett Cup consists of pairs, teams, and individual competitions. The event is named after world-renowned businessman Warren Buffett, lifelong bridge devotee and competitor.

This year there were two English Pairs playing for Europe:

For more information about the event visit the Buffett Cup website.

The final result saw the USA team in first place with 972.3 and Jason and Justin's European team coming a very close second with 967.7.

Happy New Year 2019

Michael Clarke

With great sadness we must inform members that Michael Clarke died on 17th April.  He was primarily a rubber bridge player but had been a member of the Agamemnon league team for many years, playing with Martin Braid until Martin's death then with Jeff Morris.  The team always placed well in the league, winning in 2007 and finishing second this year.  Michael was also on the Goldstone Trophy winning team in 2007 and won the Gazette Trophy a couple of times on Manchester Bridge Club teams.  In 1982 he won the National Masters Pairs with Jeremy Wyndham.  Our condolences go to his wife and family.

Green Point Pairs

Manchester's Annual Green Point Pairs was held at Altrincham on Saturday 2nd March.  Forty eight pairs competed with many MBC members taking part.
