European Open Trials - Michael Byrne competing.

The trials to play in England's Open team in the 2018 European Championships took place Friday 12th to Monday 15th January at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club.
Ten pairs competed for the remaining places in the team alongside Andrew Robson & Tony Forrester, who have already been selected.
[Michael Byrne & Kieran Dyke - system card]
The top two pairs join the pre-selected pair of Tony Forrester and Andrew Robson. After lying in the top three almost all of the event Michael and Kieran finished third, with this top three well clear of the rest. This was no doubt disappointing for them, but they played extremely well and could well earn European selection in the future.
Hard Luck Michael - terrific effort.

Michael Byrne was NPC for U21's who did very well

England's Junior teams travelled to Leuven, near Brussels, to take part in the Channel Trophy last weekend.
The competition pitted England, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands against each other, with competitions for the U26, U26 Women and U21 teams.
The England teams are:

1 Oct 2018 | Internationals

Fiona Brown and Sally Brock are World Champions! After success in recent years for England's Women's team, they have now added the McConnell Cup, the World Championship for Women's teams at the World Bridge Series. Unlike in other Championships, where teams are restricted to players of the same nationality, this event is open to mixed teams, and in combination with four players from the USA Fiona and Sally have claimed the gold medal.
Whatever the result in the final, there would have been cause for British celebration, as they defeated a team which included Nicola Smith, Yvonne Wiseman, and Scotland's Paula Leslie.
And to complete the set of medals, a bronze medal has been won in the Rosenblum Cup (for Open teams) by the team of Andrew Robson, Alexander Allfrey, Tom Paske & Ed Jones.
Congratulations to them all. This medal haul makes it the best result by English players in the event in many years - and with more competitions over the next five days there may still be more...
You can follow the competitions in Orlando on the event website and through the live coverage on Bridge Base Online.

Manchester League

Would you like to play in the Manchester League this coming season which starts in September?
It's great fun and you would be most welcome.
There are around 8 to 9 matches to be played (some home & some away) between September and April either in homes or in a local club.
We would like more entries for the lower divisions.
New or inexperienced players would enter the 7th division, more experienced players will be placed in a higher division.
Please e-mail Kath Nelson, the league secretary if you are interested or have a chat with Jeff or Dave.
If you only have a pair they may be able to fix you up with another pair to form a team.

Ben Franks Pairs
Manchester's qualifier for the Corwen Trophy was held at Manchester Bridge Club on Sunday 2nd December. A small but select field of 14 pairs played three boards against each other pair. After the first session Alec Smalley and Barbara Lewis were leading ahead of John Holland and Rodney Lighton. These two pairs met in the final round of the second session, with Alec and Barbara still just ahead until the last board, when Alec, playing in a pushy three notrump, guessed to knock out the opposition aces in the wrong order and went down, converting a potential top into a bottom. Alec and Barbara finished third, with David Sarabowski and Sam Herman second. In fourth place and also qualifying for the Corwen were Karen Reissmann and Irene Davies.
Winners John Holland and Rodney Lighton with Ann Thornton (MCBA)
Second David Saraborowski and Sam Herman

MANCHESTER BRIDGE CLUB PLANS
Dear Member,
As you are probably aware the Manchester Bridge Club will be vacating our Palatine Road premises at the beginning of 2019.
Of course it is with great sadness that we do so, but we can reflect that Palatine Road has been a wonderful venue for 40 years – for which we will be having a celebratory party this Autumn on Sunday 9th December.
In the meantime all our activities will be as normal with the club premises being available for matches, county events and meetings, afternoon rubber bridge and Wednesday night duplicate and play class.
On Mondays,Tuesdays and Thursdays the club will still be using the Casino until the end of the year.
It is our intention to continue the Manchester Bridge Club activities in different premises in 2019 and we are currently looking at some options. However, if members of the club have any suggestions, we would be happy to investigate.

THE 2018 RUIA CUP
MULTIPLE TEAMS COMPETITION
This took place over 3 sessions in May, June & July.
WINNERS
EVE LIGHTHILL, SID TRAVERS,
MARCELLO & ELENA ROSENBAUM
(and BOB COOKE in the 1st round)
Trophy presented by Bhim Ruia (pictured left)
Eve Lighthill’s team started the evening with two good sessions behind them and a substantial lead. But as the final session progressed Barbara Lewis's team whittled away at the lead until, after the last of the 24 boards, only two victory points separated the teams.
Well done to Eve's team on an excellent win and commiserations to Barbara Lewis, Alec Smalley, Irene Davies and Karen Reissmann on a fine performance on the final evening but just finishing second.
Thanks also to Bhim Ruia for presenting the Ruia Cup to the winning team. Looking at the plinth the first year was 1978 and won by a team captained by Jeff Morris and containing Boris Ewart, John Holland and Michelle Brunner. Another interesting win was 1985 when the cup was won by Celia Rawlings playing with Kevin Comrie and Frank Starkie. For those that do not remember that far back Celia is now Celia Comrie!
Regards, Jeff.

Manchester Win Pachabo......again!
Congratulations to the Manchester team of John Holland, Rodney Lighton, Michael Byrne and Michael Newman who won the inter-counties teams of four at Bedford on 9-10th June. The team started well on the Saturday, neck and neck with Hampshire throughout the day, ending second by about 4 VPs. The Sunday morning session saw Manchester win all five of their matches by good margins to lead by about 15 VPs. On the Sunday afternoon Manchester managed to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory despite losing four of their five matches, fortunately by not too large margins, to finish just ahead of Nottingham who had a late surge to push Hampshire into third place. This result continues Manchester's fine run in the last five years; first, second, second, first, and second.
Full results are on the EBU web site.

23 Mar 2018 | Clubs

Changes have been introduced to the National Grading Scheme. These were made in response to feedback received during the consultation of clubs which took place last year.
- The grade of players with 'mature' grades will not change when they partner players who have played fewer than 150 graded boards. The session will not count towards the grade of the more experienced player, but will count towards the grade of the less experienced player. It is hoped that this will stop people being deterred from acting as a host or mentor at their club due to concerns they have about how it might affect their NGS.
- Grades will be published once you have played 150 boards (previously 300) but they will change more quickly than before to enable new players to reach an appropriate grade sooner. A grade will still be considered 'evolving' until you have played 1000 boards, at which point it 'matures'.
These changes are now in effect.

EBU ARTICLE |
6 Feb 2018 | Clubs | Education

A TED talk has outlined that the social interaction which comes from activities such as playing bridge (with bridge specifically referenced) could be a key to a long and happy life. A study found that frequent face-to-face social interaction was a greater indicator of long life than other factors such as your weight or whether you drink. Watch the talk to find out more.
Bridge has also been identified in this article as a great activity for older people to combat loneliness.
