John Howes
John Howes has sadly passed away, peacefully after a long illness. He was alert and positive to the very end, and much enjoyed visits from a number of local bridge players in the care home where he spent his last few months; he was also able to kibitz some club and HBA sessions! Much of his active bridge playing was before I came to Herts, but I gather from Hazel Miles that he captained the county B team for many years, and I certainly enjoyed meeting him and chatting about bridge and other subjects. Others commented, and I concur, that he was a true gentleman who will be much missed. (Received from Ian Kemp)

National Handicap Pairs
This is a national event where uniquely the event result is handicapped depending on the NGS of the players. Therefore any player regardless of their experience and NGS has a chance of doing well in this national event. In recent years the overall national winners have been relatively inexperienced players whose NGS was 2 or 3. HBA has decided to run a heat of the event this year and the entry form and more details are on the HBA website. The event takes place on Sunday September 6th, on RealBridge, starting at 13.30. The event will comprise around 30 boards and the entry fee is £6 per player.

HBA AGM
This year's HBA AGM will be held by video link on Sunday 27th September starting at 11.00. The meeting itself will be short (less than 30 minutes last year) as all the officer reports will be published on the HBA website in advance, along with the short agenda. Questions on the reports will be addressed during the AGM and these should be submitted in advance to Geoff Cordingley (HBA Secretary) at geoffcorders@hotmail.co.uk.
The HBA Committee for 2026/7 will also be elected at the AGM. If you wish to nominate anyone for the Committee please use the form on the HBA website and send to Geoff by Sunday 30th August. Similarly if you have a motion for inclusion in the AGM agenda then please also send to Geoff by 30th August.
The AGM requires a quorum of 30 HBA primary members to attend. A sign-up sheet for members intending to attend is on the website, so that the number of attendees can be monitored. The link for the AGM itself will be added to the website nearer to the day.

Plastic Cups!
Our current supply of plastic coffee/tea cups is running low. In sympathy with the global campaign to eliminate plastic waste, the Lowewood committee has decided not to purchase any more cups, when the current supply runs out. Members should plan to bring their own cup/mug in future, if they wish to have a drink.
