NOVICE CORNER

George Hancock

George Hancock was born in Texas.  He grew up in Houston; Tulsa, OK and in the 3rd grade, his family moved to New Orleans where he lived until he graduated High School.  New Orleans was a fun place to grow up.  In Junior High, he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track/cross country.  In High School, he only played football.  The athletic highlight of his childhood was winning the City of New Orleans baseball championship when he was 12 years old.  He was the catcher and his friend, Joey Rich pitched a perfect game during the tournament.  They talk about that team at all of their reunions.  Playing football, he broke his collarbone twice and tore his meniscus (Stacy said he should have joined the band instead)!

George graduated from Baylor University and earned a BBA in Accounting.  His first job was in Dallas in public accounting at Arthur Young and later was the controller for Savings and Loan in Dallas.  In 1987, George and Stacy moved to Memphis where he worked for Union Planters National Bank in the bond division.  In the 90s, the bond division was sold to Vining Sparks and then sold again to Stifel in 2022.  George retired in August.  Stacy and George have 3 children and 5 grandchildren.  His grandchildren all live in Texas.  He has 2 brothers that live in Fort Worth so they make a lot of trips to Texas.  George enjoys watching sports, reading and hiking with his son, Scott. George loves the beach but prefers the mountains.

During his career at Vining sparks, George was able to work on the trading desk, the sales floor and in the strategies division and enjoyed each one.  His favorite city that he ever traveled to is London because of the pubs and the history. George and Stacy rent a house every year in either the mountains for the beach with all of their kids and grandkids.  Now that he is retired, Stacy and George plan to travel more although he is forbidden to go on the bridge cruise!

Stacy kept telling George that he would enjoy bridge so George decided to enroll in our bridge classes in March, 2022.  He didn't know anything about bridge and not much about card games.  Almost three years later, he says he still doesn't know much about bridge but he is having a good time.
