Newcomers to Bridge may find it all a bit daunting so this is a guide to good behaviour at the game and help you transition to club bridge.
Arriving at the table
- Greet your opponents and briefly describe the system you are using e.g 4 card major and Weak No Trump.
- At the end of the round thank your opponents before moving to the next table.
Table Rules
- Make sure your mobile phone is on silent or turned off.
- Cards should not be taken from board until all players are present.
- Count your cards face down and make sure you have exactly 13.
- The board stays in the centre of the table until bidding completed so everyone can see the vulnerability.
- North is responsible for ensuring boards in correct position and entering result in bridgemate.
- Do not fiddle with your bidding box, decide on your bid before touching cards in box.
- When you are on opening lead place your card face down on the table, this prevents any irregularities.
- Dummy lays out cards with trump suit on their right and in sequence from high to low.
- Dummy cannot touch a card unless instructed by their partner.
- A touched card in dummy must be played.
- At end of game do not fold cards until result has been agreed and entered into bridgemate.
- Post mortems should be kept to a minimum and be mindful that your conversation can be overheard.
- Give credit to opponents for good bid or play
- Don’t gloat if you play well, it is rude
- Call the Director for any dispute at the table, do not try to sort it yourself
- Bridge is a timed event and slow play can disrupt the flow of the game, continuous slow play will be subject to penalties
- Be nice to your partner.
