To avoid 2 club losers, you must set up dummy's diamonds. You need 3 entries to dummy, 2 to ruff diamonds, 1 to reach the established winners in the suit. If you win the first trick, you will employ one of the 3 entries at the wrong moment - while the diamonds are blocked. You must therefore duck the first trick!!! Suppose W switches to a club. You win with the A cash the A♦ and cross to dummy with a trump. You ruff a diamond, return to dummy with a trump, and ruff the diamonds good. A trump to dummy and you can claim. If instead W gives a ruff and discard at trick 2, you can ruff in the S hand and again set up the diamonds. |

Online Autumn League |
League Results
The online league has now finished and as with the summer league the final result came down to the last few matches. There were three pairs that could have tied for first on the last day. In the end PETER AND PAT FORD were victorious and came out as the league winners. With John Hiskey and Peter Hayward finishing second on their head to head result. They were then closely followed by 4 pairs who share 3rd place.
We tried comparing IMP scores with a random vugraph matches for this league, but it wasn't a very popular system. Next we will see how the match pointing system fares. Nothing seems to be ideal in the free play area of BBO
CONGRATULATIONS to Pat & Peter, well played.

Committee Meeting |
Meeting Bulletin
The JBC committee recently held a meeting and can report the following:
1. The clubhouse will now also be open for tournaments on a Tuesday afternoon, the same strict safety measures will apply and as with other days pre booking is essential. We hope this will enable us to reopen the club to new members shortly.
2. An online Christmas/New Year tournament will be run over the holidays with a semi knockout format depending on entries, guaranteed minimum number of matches for all. Match pointing scoring will be trialled.
3. Our major creditors have been paid in full and the club can proceed debt free.
4. The AGM will be 6th March 2021
5. Membership subscriptions are due in January 2021. The fee was discussed and it was felt appropriate to remain at 30€. The committee have provided members with various opportunities to play bridge in 2020 including online tournaments. During this time the club has incurred the normal maintenance costs of the building plus paid off major loans.
6. A Student membership was agreed for young novice players, this will run for a maximum of 2 years and then be reviewed. This fee is set at 10€
Val Lawson has resigned from official duties on the committee, the club are grateful for her input. Thank you Val.
Marianne Speck has taken over responsibilities for the club bar, thank you Marianne.
Angela Clarke will train as a scorer, thank you Angela.
Anyone else who feels they can help with scoring or any other aspect of running the club please talk to any committee member.

How to use BBO |
BBO Online
Update your software and login to Casual to play league matches, stay in Competitive to play in pairs tournaments and Swiss teams (hit back to return to competitive from Casual)
Videos to enhance your online experience.
Casual and Competitive are now 2 SEPARATE servers (areas)
BBO is free and arguably the best bridge resource on the internet. You can create a free account and challenge other players to 1 table matches. (some of you will have used this before and others are just discovering, why not challenge a club pair to a match). There are many free tournaments and the Bridge Master training area is suitable for anyone. (Pete Hollands has videos solve all the hands). There are also virtual club pairs tournaments that are available.
Here is a video from my favourite teacher Peter Hollands who has a HUGE archive of past videos to keep you amused. He is an international Australian player and well know commentator on BBO and his weekly video of the instant free.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MldFbBdea90
The video is slightly long as it assumes zero knowledge of the site.
If you are wanting to know how to set up a table or other specific task on BBO check out Paul Gipson's list of training videos :

UPDATE : Several of our regular club members are now using BBO so if you fancy joining some of them for a table or a team match then get in touch and we can help arrange casual games.

Summer League Results |
League Results
Our first ever online league has now finished. After several months of head to head matches the final few weeks were very close with some very competitive and exciting games. The over all winner on 41 points were Peter Gray and Anita Dixon. Well done to them, especially as they were a new partnership at the start of the competition.
The whole competition was so close that three pairs tied for second place, on 39 points, each having one win and 2 loses within those head to head matches.
We hope to run similiar online events in the future, please let JBC know if you are interested in playing in more online tournaments and if you have any comments on how you think these events could be improved.

Inter Club Challenge |
Montrose Bridge Club v Jávea Bridge Club
On Wednesday afternoon Jávea Bridge Club and Montrose Bridge Club participated in an online bridge match. Sarah Williams hosted the event and the Angus based outfit not only proved to be impressive organisers but also very good bridge players. After an entertaining couple of hours Montrose emerged victorious from the inaugural event.
All eight players from each team enjoyed the experience and JBC hope to play against our Scottish counterparts again in the near future. Meanwhile, JBC are also exploring the possibility of potential matches against other clubs.

Online Bridge |
Online Bridge
There are so many ways to play bridge online these days it is difficult to know where to start. (If you need help feel free to contact me).
The follow list has been taken from the EBU suggestions : Bridge Club Live, BBO and Funbridge to study no fear bridge UK(for acol) or COM for five card majors is a great resource for solo play (contact me for free access) and Bridge Master on BBO.
Bridge Club Live :
This is an EBU online club. You can play for free in guest rooms, or sign up as a member to get full access. You play with real people and it is UK based so plenty of Acol/weak No Trump (though all are welcome). JBC could register, in which case club members who play in the drop-in-drop-out (DIDO) tournament (which runs almost all the time) can compare their results with those of other club members
What is the DIDO tournament? It is an all-day tournament scored with pairs scoring (MPs). You commit to playing at least 4 boards at a time, and if you play 16 boards during the day (which can be at different times, in rounds of 4 boards), then you appear in the daily leader board and receive EBU master points.
Thanks to the special offer, you can currently join Bridge Club Live for just £1.00 for 30 days. The full price is £72.00 per year. There is a little wrinkle you should be aware of. If you have a discounted subscription like the special offer, you will also pay an EBU UMS (Universal Membership) charge. If you pay the full price it is included. How much? £0.67 per month (a bargain!).
Note that there is, or will be, a cost for clubs to register. It is free until 1st July 2020 but will be £24.00 per year for the club, and club members also need to join as individuals. (if members are interested this is an option that could be considered)
FUNBRIDGE :
the largest online platform for computer bridge – but with a difference. Every game you play on Funbridge had its results compared with other people, so it is a kind of computer duplicate. The standard is high; the computer opponent is better than most human players even if sometimes it does strange things (just like us). In 2019, an average of over 1 million deals were played on Funbridge every day.
Funbridge has a nice user interface and some great features, like the ability to replay hands as many times as you like (only your first score counts unfortunately!). Because you play against the computer, there is no waiting around, and you can play as slowly as you like without annoying anyone. You can’t let down your partner therefore, but equally you won’t be congratulated for your great play, except by the reward of a nice score.
You get 100 free boards when you sign up, and can play 10 boards for free every week. Beyond that buy packs of boards or pay a subscription for unlimited games.
The EBU runs a Funbridge session every day, and master points are awarded. There is a small extra charge for playing in the EBU sessions, currently €2 (though like Bridge Base, Funbridge has a virtual currency called Diamonds).
There are several ways you can do things as a club on Funbridge. You could have a team in the Funbridge Team Championship (6 members in each team), and you can create Funbridge tournaments for your club. It is not ideal though, since players always play solo, and you have to accept that non-club members might play in your tournament. These other games do not cost any Funbridge Diamonds though, and you do not get master points.
BRIDGE BASE ONLINE (BBO):
The largest online bridge platform for real-time bridge – by which I mean, you play with real people and wait while they are thinking and so on, just like in club. There is an option for robots, but mainly for practising. It began in the USA and is truly international, which means the majority of players use a strong No Trump, but there are plenty of Acol players too. There are sessions every day.
NO FEAR BRIDGE
There are plenty of learning sites out there, one of my favourites is no fear bridge, not to an extremely high level but good sound advice. Contact me for one months free access.
BRIDGE MASTER
Free, I always like a bargain! on Bridge Base Online. Bridge Master has several levels; you have to find a line of play that succeeds for a variety of hands. At top 2 levels it is VERY challenging, and you can learn different types of squeezes.
