Web Site

Welcome to Iona Bridge Club Web Site. Iona Bridge Club is situated in Na Fianna CLG Club House on Mobhi Road, Glasnevin.  It was established in 1975 and boasts approximately 75 members ranging in rank from Novices to Master players.  Iona Bridge Club takes pride in the fact that it is a friendly club but also provides a challenging game of bridge. There is no segration of ranks of players so novices are fully integrated into the club from day one. We play every Thursday night with the exception of Easter and Christmas and players are in position at 7.20 in advance of commencement of play at 7.30pm. Iona Bridge Club is open to non members from 1st June to 31st August inclusive.

Due to the COVID 19 situation, Iona Bridge Club will not be able to gather and host its weekly bridge game in the usual fashion. However, the club is hosting an online tournament every Thursday night under the auspices of the Glasnevin Regional Virtual Bridge Club (GRVBC). Members of Iona Bridge Club are also eligible to play in the other games run by GRVBC.

The virtual game is proving to be popular in these adverse times with all those who are playing. If any members have not ventured into the virtual bridge world but would like to learn more about it, please contact any of the committee members who will be happy to advise you.

 Iona Virtual Bridge Club

Some Dos and Don’ts for Online Bridge.

The Iona Virtual Bridge Club is NOT the place to learn about BBO.

DO logon to BBO and learn how to navigate the site and get familiar with how the site works. Click on the different headings, areas and clubs. If you find yourself somewhere you didn’t want to be, simply log out of BBO and start again.

DO organise with your friends to play a private table. This will help you to get used to the various trials and tribulations of BBO. Disconnects, Logouts and Crashes are everyday life on BBO. You need to learn how to overcome these difficulties. It is too late when you’re in the middle of a competition and disrupting all the other tables.

DO remember the TDs have NO CONTROL over your computer, ipad or whatever device you are using to access the site. YOU need to learn how to reset YOUR device if that becomes necessary.

DO remember the TDs have NO CONTROL over your Internet connection. If YOU have a problem with YOUR connection to the internet, YOU have to sort it out.

DO remember the TDs are giving their time and energies so YOU can enjoy your bridge. The more YOU can do to help, the smoother things will go for everybody.

DO remember the TDS are giving up their game so YOU can enjoy yours. It’s not possible to play AND deal with any issues that arise in a timely manner to keep the game running smoothly.

DO register early for club games. This is to assist the TD setup the game, ie number of boards and tables required etc.

DO show consideration and patience to those members who are not quite as expert and computer literate as you are.

And now the DON’Ts.

DON’T leave it to the last minute to register.TD needs time to setup.

DON’T leave it to the last minute to logon to play even if you are registered. The system might not pick you up and you will miss your game and upset your partner.

DON’T leave your device unattended for too long. BBO will log you out and sometimes this is not obvious. You may not be aware you’ve been logged out and again miss your game.

DON’T badger TDs looking for extras. TDs can look back at how a hand was being played and make a good assessment of the outcome of the board and set result accordingly.

And back to the DOs.

DO try to play in as timely a manner as possible. There is a time limit for each round and there should be no problem getting all the boards played.

DO try to learn how and when to make a CLAIM. This can speed up your game and maybe give you the extra time you might need on a difficult hand.

DO learn how to ACCEPT or REJECT a claim as this can also speed up the game. YOU might need the time gained yourself. Claims can minimise the number of TIMEOUTS and reduce the workload of the TD.

DO take the time to get as familiar as possible with BBO and your equipement. It will add to your relaxation and enjoyment of the whole BBO experience. And remember we could be in this for the long haul.
