Our second Christmas Party was held in Hoveton Youth and Community Centre on Thursday 14th December 2023 in the afternoon. It was attended by 34 festive-clad members who all brought a plate of delicious food. Wine, Prosecco, orange juice and lemonade was served before and during the session and a jolly time was had by one and all!
The usual pivot movement was played and prizes were presented to the winners by treasurer Ann Riley.
North – David Ellis
South – Anne Van Ree
East – Jan Shell
West – Michael Wallis
The winner of the last trick of the session to be won with a 2 was Jenny Hemmings, again! Well done, Jenny.
After the tea break we recorded a rendition of Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. This was sent to Gordon Wishart to wish both him and Trish our best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. His cheeky smile has been missed at our Thursday Bridge sessions.
Many thanks to all of the Christmas elves who helped out during the afternoon in the kitchen and with the setting up and clearing away. Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year to everyone.

This year's first Christmas Party was held in Horning Village Hall on Monday evening, 11th December 2023 attended by 28 of our members who enjoyed an evening of light-hearted bridge, wine and nibbles. There was lots of Santa hats, reindeer antlers and Christmas jumpers expressing the festive season.
A pivot movement was played and prizes awarded for the best score for each of North, South, East and West, resulting in the following winners. Prizes were presented by Chairman Jim Fletcher.
North Winner : Mike Williams
South Winner : Lynne Bruce
East Winner : Philip Hearsum
West Winner : Kevin Bradshaw
During play, any trick won with a 2 resulted in the player having to wear reindeer antlers, which were then passed to the next player to win with a 2. Whoever was wearing the antlers at the end of play won a bottle of wine. The lucky winner was Jenny Hemmings.
Two other presentations were made, recognising long-term work by members behind the scenes. This year’s well-deserved recipients were Jeff Riley and Kevin Bradshaw.
The organisation of the evening was led by Jenny Hemmings and Sue Davey and they received a well-earned round of applause.

It was another wonderful day enjoyed by all who attended, 48 Bridge players and 3 who joined us for lunch only. The sun shone, enabling us to relax before and after lunch in the garden and chat with friends. Lunch was cooked and served to the usual high standard and many people commented on how much they had enjoyed it.
Peter Bowman directed the Bridge session brilliantly, sorting out a number of issues in a calm, friendly manner.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped get tables sorted and set up for the day as well as packing everything up for their return to Horning Village Hall.
Sue Davey deserves a special mention because without her hard work and liaising with The Old Rectory, our meal choices and lunch places would never have been so efficiently and easily served. It was a joy to see so many of our members having a great time together at this very popular event.
N-S Winners: Mike Williams & Matt Jackson
E-W Winners: John Bradley & Reg Pfrang

Our Winter Away Day took place at The Old Rectory on Monday 16th January 2023. Within a couple of weeks of it being advertised all of the places available were taken and, with a further two playing places being added nearer to the day, we had thirteen full tables of players and an additional three members who joined us for lunch. Jenny Hemmings and her husband, Roger, spent many hours ensuring the meal choices and seating plan were all correct on the day.
The enthusiastic players were greeted with the usual morning refreshments then play commenced by 10:15am after a warm welcome from Ann Riley, chairman. At 12:30pm the bar opened, our lunchtime guests arrived and the room was prepared for our superb, table-service lunch. Everybody commented on how tasty and hot the food was and what a brilliant job the catering staff had done.
After lunch we were able to retire to another room with coffee whilst the conservatory was prepared for the final hour of Bridge. Play finished at 3:30pm. The tables were cleared and everyone collected a cup of tea whilst Ann Riley (Tournament Director) looked at the results to see who had won. It wasn’t until this stage of the day that we realised that nobody had taken any photographs which explains why the Bridge tables look bare in the accompanying photographs!
Ann was very pleased to thank the hotel staff and present them with the tip which had been collected after lunch. She then awarded the winners with their bottles of wine:
North/South : Reg Pfrang and Pat Whittle.
East/West : Vic Ellis and Ron Hunt.
A chocolate orange was awarded to unlucky pair Teresa Hales and Anne Read!
Before everyone departed for home, Ann thanked Jenny Hemmings for her help with organising yet another successful event and everyone who had attended to make it such a wonderful day.
Our next Away Day is already booked at The Old Rectory for Monday 19th June 2023!
