The second Christmas Party of 2022 was held at Hoveton Community Centre on Thursday afternoon, 15th December.
The party got off to a jolly start with a glass of Buck’s Fizz and nibbles. We had 5 full tables and played the usual Christmas pivot movement. After three rounds we broke for Christmas tea which was provided by the Club. Despite thinking we had got too much food there wasn’t much left when we resumed our seats for the last round of play!
Following a special request from Gordon Wishart we had a couple of rousing choruses of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – words provided by Gordon and music supplied by Ann. Finally, we cleared up and calculated our scores to discover who had won the bottles of wine.
A few spot prizes had already been awarded. Lynne Bruce and David Ellis made a grand slam and Bruce Carter and Ann Riley made a small slam doubled with partners they don’t usually play with and were duly awarded a chocolate orange each. Jeff Riley finished the afternoon with the antlers and was awarded the bottle of wine for winning the last trick with a 2!
The winners for each direction were presented to the following:
North – Pat Whittle, South – David Ellis,
East – Lynne Bruce, West – Philip Hearsum.
Before we all departed for home, Ann thanked Jenny Hemmings for all of her help with the organisation and everyone for coming, helping with the clearing up and making it such a fun afternoon.

This year's first Christmas Party was held in Horning Village Hall on Monday evening, 12th December 2022, attended by 6 full tables of Christmas jumper-wearing players.
A welcome drink was provided on arrival with accompanying crisps. Before starting play, Chairman Ann Riley presented Jane Brown with a bottle of wine as a thank you for her role as secretary for the past year. Unfortunately, this had been postponed since the AGM as Jane was away on holiday at that time.
The usual pivot movement for the Christmas Party meant that everyone got to play with someone different at each table which added to the conversation and chatter. Half-way through the evening we broke for a wonderful choice of nibbles, more drinks and further socialising. Two more rounds of Bridge were then followed by clearing up and a lot of adding up and subtracting of scores!
There had been a few spot prizes awarded throughout the evening. The headband of antlers was passed from player to player who had won a trick with a 2, which finally landed on Giles Jackson who was awarded with a bottle of wine. We then awarded Jim Fletcher and Giles Jackson a chocolate orange each for having bid and made a slam which had been doubled and redoubled giving them a very large score!
Finally, the winners for each compass direction were awarded:
North – Mike Williams, South – Elizabeth Groves,
East – Jim Fletcher, West – Geoff Kirby.
Before venturing out into the very frosty night special thanks were given to Jenny Hemmings and Sue Davey for providing the drinks, prizes and delicious spread of food and to everyone who attended to make it such a happy event.

SUMMER AWAY DAY 20th JUNE 2022 |
At last, after 3 years, our long-awaited Summer Away Day took place at The Old Rectory, Crostwick on Monday 20th June 2022. The sun shone and 44 enthusiastic Bridge players arrived to make up 11 full tables for the day.
On arrival, tea and coffee was served and everyone took their places at the tables. Chairman Ann Riley welcomed the players and play commenced at 10:15 am. A mid-session break was taken at 12:30 pm and the bar was opened for a pre-lunch drink.
Players were joined by three lunchtime guests to enjoy the beautiful surroundings outside in the sunshine. A delicious two-course lunch was served at 1:00 pm. Jenny Hemmings’ meticulous planning ensured the smooth running of main meals and desserts were presented to the correct people – well done! Coffee was taken outside and the tables were quickly rearranged to enable play to recommence by 2:30 pm.
The competition ended at 3:30 pm, giving players time to tidy away bidding boxes and cloths, enjoy a cup of tea and biscuit and enable Ann (Tournament Director) to note down the results. Ann thanked Jenny Hemmings for her hard work organising the day and Brian Cunningham for helping to transport the tables to and from the venue. A big thank you was given to everyone for attending the event to make it such a wonderful day.
Finally, prizes were presented to the winners (photo above).
NORTH-SOUTH : Lynne Bruce and Nigel Bates
EAST-WEST : Maggie Neal and Jeff Riley.
Gordon Wishart gave a vote of thanks and appreciation to Ann and the Committee for organising such an amazing day, before everyone departed at about 4:30 pm.
