Horning Bridge Club once again celebrated its annual Christmas Party on Monday 12th December 2016.  Chief tournament director Robert Harber greeted arriving members with a festive drink, which they enjoyed whilst awaiting start of play.  A mid-session interval was taken where all sampled a fantastic selection of savouries and sweets that members had provided for the occasion.

A fun bridge pivot movement was played and at the end of play scores were totted up resulting in individual North, South, East and West winners and consolation prizes. Prizes were presented by Chairman Ron Hunt.

Strangely, no player sitting North ended with a positive score, so the North Winner was deemed to be the player with the smallest negative score!

Consolation prizes were awarded to the “unluckiest” players of the evening!

NORTH WINNER: Suzanne Gill (-150) NORTH CONSOLATION: Robert Harber (-1,000)

SOUTH WINNER: Tony Collins (+1,500) SOUTH CONSOLATION: Cathy Smith(-1,470)

EAST WINNER: Peter Bowman (+410) EAST CONSOLATION: Jan Shell (-1,500)

WEST WINNER: Tessa Shingler (+2,370) WEST CONSOLATION: Benita Murraty(+670)

BRIDGE DAY AT STOWER GRANGE 11th JANUARY 2016
  • Diane Harber receiving Nancy Oldfield Trust cheque from Ron Hunt
  • EW Winners Matt Jackson and Keith Atkinson
  • NS Winners Ron and Beryl Boote

A new venue, Stower Grange Hotel at Drayton, was chosen by the Committee for this years' annual away-day on Monday 11th January 2016 and it proved to be an inspired choice.

On arrival at 09:45 am members enjoyed tea or coffee whilst settling in to the bridge tables awaiting start of play.  Chairman Ron Hunt outlined the approximate timetable for the day and bridge commenced at 10:30 am.  Normal duplicate bridge was played, but having separate N-S and E-W winners rather than the usual arrow-switched single winner movement.

Bridge was adjourned at 12:30 pm for members to gather in the bar and enjoy a lunchtime drink prior to settling down for a delicious two-course lunch provided by the Hotel.

Bridge re-commenced at 2:15 pm until time for tea and coffee refreshments at approximately 4:00 pm.  A raffle was then held in aid of the Nancy Oldfield Trust, the charity this year being chosen by Cathy Smith.  A magnificient £206.00 was raised for this well-deserving local charity which offers disabled and socially-disadvantaged people excitement, freedom and adventure on the Norfolk Boards.

Finally, the bridge prize winners were announced and Chairman Ron Hunt presented the prizes:

NORTH-SOUTH WINNERS: Ron & Beryl Boote

EAST-WEST WINNERS: Matt Jackson & Keith Atkinson

Postscript:  On the following Monday, 18th January at Horning Bridge Club, Diane Harber (a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nancy Oldfield Trust) received  a cheque to the aforementioned value from Chairman Ron Hunt.  (see photo above).
